The Necromantic Council

Welcome, all Children of the Plaguebringer, to the Necromantic Council

HuOKrkL.png

What is it?

HulR8QD.png @ Council is an RPG-style leveling and award mechanic used in conjunction with the Necromancer Subspecies.
@
HulR8QD.png @ It rewards all levels of involvement within the subspecies with "points", which can be used to advance user's Necromancers up the hierarchy of the Council, unlock lore-specific abilities, and earn badges.
@
HulR8QD.png @ Council is entirely voluntary. It's not necessary to participate in Council in order to own a Necromancer or take part in the subspecies, however it does expand the world of the Necromancer through lore creation, lore connections, and goal-driven game play.

How does it work?

HulR8QD.png @ Council uses Google Sheets as a way to keep track of points the user earns through involvement with the subspecies. Unfortunately use of Google Sheets is a requirement.
@
HulR8QD.png @ Council uses Sheets in a very similar way to how Dominance programs use it to log exalted dragons or keep track of raffle tickets, so the mechanic should hopefully be familiar for some users. While it is slightly more complicated than most Dom sheets overall, step by step instructions are provided on every tab.
@
HulR8QD.png @ The user creates a copy of the Council Point Calculator (CPC), which they then link to a master sheet. The master sheet keeps track of overall rankings and the badges that the user unlocks through game play.
@
HulR8QD.png @ Rankings and point totals are largely just for fun and lore. Points are used to unlock badges, and provide a gamification element to the subspecies.

Special Note: You do not need to participate in the CPC and/or community rankings to use Council lore! All lore detailed below is free to use. You can pick Specialties for your Necromancers or even sign up on Faction membership lists! However we ask that you do NOT use badges unless you've earned them, and certain parts of Council may require points in order to participate.

A note on cheating...

Instead, the Council sees itself as a guiding light, providing direction and support for all Necromancers in their pursuit of leading clans along Mother Plaguebringer's path. Among its many duties the Council will debate the nuances of Plaguebringer's doctrines and interpret esoteric philosophies into practice, combat common threats such as Emperors, direct Necromantic efforts in Dominance and other worldly pursuits, punish traitors and blasphemers within the ranks, protect the dignity and honor of Necromancers as a whole, and much more. Outsiders view the Council as a single monolithic body, with a single mind and single purpose, however nothing could be further from the truth. As a Plague institution, none of its members believe in authority for authority's sake, instead seeing themselves as individuals pursuing their own agendas. For the sake of these agendas, Council members will form alliances and factions to overcome their political adversaries and enact policy that will benefit themselves, their clans, or their ideals. Every issue that is brought to the Council's attention is hotly debated by its members, and the Council's eventual decree is largely influenced by whatever faction has temporarily seized the reins of power. Because factions and alliances are forever shifting, and its members rise and fall in influence, the Council is a chaotic landscape of intrigue, double dealing, and cutthroat ambition. Necroservi Ostensibly only Necromancers can serve as Council members, however in practice there are a small handful of Necroservi who have won a seat at the table. These individuals are often quite powerful, either in magic or political influence, and have won enough allies (or puppets) among the Necromancers to open Council doors for them. Official policy states that a Necroservus may sit in on Council meetings if they are sponsored by a Necromancer Councilor of Advocating standing or above. This sponsor agrees to take responsibility for their conduct within the Tower, and provides a character reference for both their piety and their infectionist abilities. Officially, a Necroservi cannot vote on any Council policy. Unofficially, a resourceful Necroservi can buy or influence weaker Council members to vote as they direct, and so carry out their ambitions despite their status as second class members. The Tower in the Wastes The Necromantic Council resides within a tower of bone that juts high enough to scratch the underside of the yellow, plagueling sky. It sits within sight of the Hellwell Undercroft, half a day's travel for visiting clans who wish to pay homage to the most favored of Mother's Children. On its own the Tower is an impressive edifice of plagueling engineering, but still represents only a fraction of the Council building proper. The majority of the structure burrows deep into the earth like a mat of tangled hyphae, each corridor connecting a string of nodule-like rooms. These rooting layers house the records and working documents generated by Council meetings. The Councilors themselves sit in rising tiers around a hollow center, stretching from the ground to the height of the tower's jagged tip. The Council Tower in Plague is the seat of Necromantic power across Sornieth, however smaller, regional headquarters exist in every Flight. Each regional headquarters is run according to that Flight's customs and preferences, but all administer to local Necromancers and worship Plaguebringer above all other deities. Several times a year these headquarters send emissaries to the Council Tower in Plague, where they represent the interests of their region. It is a privilege and an honor to serve ones colleagues at the local headquarters, but the truly ambitious will inevitably choose to leave their homeland behind to serve at the seat of true power within the Scarred Wasteland. Council Standing Councilors serve within a hierarchy of six ranks, known as standings. [columns]•[nextcol]@[nextcol]Standing[/columns] The first rank takes its name from the ranking system itself, lessening the honor of the title and leaving many Necromancers hungry for advancement. It is also a literal description, as Standing Necromancers are expected to stand in side galleries during Council meetings while seated Councilors rest on perches arrayed around a seething, central cauldron. The Standing rank is usually only the first step in a long career of political service, however for some Necromancers it's sufficient to call themselves a Councilor and they never seek further advancement. Standing Necromancers may observe, but they cannot vote in most Council proceedings. [columns]•[nextcol]@[nextcol]Perching[/columns] Perching Councilors have earned the right to sit on one of the ascending perches that circle the hollow center of the Council Tower. While they are the lowest of the seated standings, they occupy the highest perches, furthest above a seething pool of plague and puss that is said to originate from the Wrymwound itself. The pool gives off noxious vapors, with only the strongest constitutions able to withstand close proximity during the hours - sometimes days - that Council meetings are in session. By placing Perching Councilors at the top of the tower, Council tradition signifies they are still untested, and must prove themselves in order to earn a lower seat. Perching Necromancers can vote on major policy decisions and rulings, but are barred from more sensitive issues that are discussed above their standing. [columns]•[nextcol]@[nextcol]Advocating[/columns] In addition to the voting privileges of the Perching standing, Advocating Councilors are able to argue their cause, or the cause of their faction, in front of the Council. To speak in front of the Council, the Advocating Necromancer must stand on a tall plinth that rises out of the plague pool at the center of the Council Tower. There, amongst the fumes, they must hold an advocating position - wings held up and out, spine curved - for the duration of their arguments. Because this is a stress position that is difficult to maintain over time, it tests the advocating dragon's determination and encourages them to keep their speechifying short. Council Lore
v6E2Ley.png
wE45sAI.pngA Necromancer's NecromancerP4wTyTJ.png
GLs9auY.png

The Necromantic Council is, at heart, a governing body, however its purpose is not to legislate or enforce laws.

Necroservi
2ehWoEl.png
Ostensibly only Necromancers can serve as Council members, however in practice there are a small handful of Necroservi who have won a seat at the table.

The Tower in the Wastes
GLs9auY.png

The Necromantic Council resides within a tower of bone that juts high enough to scratch the underside of the yellow, plagueling sky.

Council Standing
GLs9auY.png

Councilors serve within a hierarchy of six ranks, known as standings.

@ Standing

The first rank takes its name from the ranking system itself, lessening the honor of the title and leaving many Necromancers hungry for advancement.

@ Perching

Perching Councilors have earned the right to sit on one of the ascending perches that circle the hollow center of the Council Tower.

@ Advocating

In addition to the voting privileges of the Perching standing, Advocating Councilors are able to argue their cause, or the cause of their faction, in front of the Council. Arguments are judged by their eloquence and their length.

@ Judging

In addition to the privileges of the Perching and Advocating standings, Judging Councilors make the final decisions on policy and arguments put forward by advocating Necromancers. They run much of the logistical day-to-day of Council business, and make sure its operations are carried out smoothly and efficiently. Judging Councilors also decide whether any cause or issue brought to the Council's attention should be sent further up the hierarchy for the consideration of Guiding Councilors.

@ Guiding

The Guiding standing is often the highest any Council member can reasonably expect to rise during their political careers. Guiding Councilors lead factions and societies, decide on major policy decisions, and sit as the final judges when Necromancers are tried for blasphemy or treason. They have final say in all matters that come under their purview, and can overrule any decision made by a lower standing Councilor. Guiding Councilors are inevitably at the heart of every web of intrigue that is spun within the Tower, and any Necromancer with ambition ignores them at their peril.

@ Ruling

There are only a small handful of Ruling Councilors, as climbing out of the cutthroat ranks of the Guiding standing requires a substantial amount of ability, ambition, influence, and luck. These Councilors represent the face of Necromancers to all domestic and foreign powers and their reach can span continents. Despite their vast power and influence, no Necromancer can claim an inherent right to rule, and they may run afoul of Tower machinations as much as any other Councilor of lower standing. However, playing such games at the level of the Ruling Councilor involve stakes that are unfathomable to most Necromancers, and within their society the Ruling standing is viewed as directly to the Left of Mother Herself.

Off the battlefield, Crusaders with a Holy Knight sub-specialty are called upon to ward off or take down Emperors when the need arises. Beyond a comprehensive understanding of Plague lore, history and current events, Diagnosans specialize in public speaking, persuasion, meditation… and less openly in intrigue and plotting against their fellows. For while a Diagnosan will claim that advising the Necromantic Order is their only aim, many are drawn to the power inherent in a Councilor’s position. To preserve the dignity of the Necromancer, duels have evolved into a ritualistic confrontation, with established rules and an overseeing referee. Beyond disagreements, duels also serve as a way for a Necromancer to prove their strength and gain influence and fame among their peers. Duelists have turned the ritual into an artform. They duel to consolidate power, to impress, and even to entertain. Duelist is most often taken as a sub-specialty, but as a primary specialty it signifies a Necromancer who values a balance between the healing and infectionist arts, as a mastery of both is required to win Necromantic duels. The Healer Necromancer is set apart from the more traditional healer by their motivations, which are typically far murkier and more complicated than simply wishing to return a dragon back to health. They specialize in non-lethal capture, and are often called upon to recover Plague-themed familiars, research subjects, and the occasional virulent Ghoul when one is needed alive. They keep records, tabulate data, and consolidate knowledge. Inculcators are more likely to be found behind a desk with ink stains along their sleeves than out blessing the rabble of the wastes. The highest concentration of Inculcators can be found within the Council building itself, and while Council members debate in their private chambers Inculcators keep the entire edifice running. Inculcators will almost always take a second and third sub-specialty, and will often specialize in their area of research interest. [nextcol] @ [nextcol] We Keep The Words [/columns] Infectionist [columns] The First And Last [nextcol] @ [nextcol] As a specialist in infection and disease, the Infectionist is by far the most common Specialty for Necromancer and Necroservus alike. It is often called ‘the first and last Specialty’, as it is achieved by all who pass the Second Trials but takes a lifetime to truly master. The greatest Necromancers in Plague history were pure Infectionists, and to this day there are many who refuse to take sub-specialties in order to better pursue what they consider to be Plaguebringer’s true artform. While these purists are rare, it is accepted that every Necromancer has some Infectionist ability, regardless of whether they’ve officially taken the Infectionist title. [/columns] Instructor [columns] Instructors specialize in teaching their fellow Necromancers by passing down skills and knowledge to the next generation. It is one of the rarest specialties, as Necromantic culture tends to value self-evolution and exploration over the more selfless role of instructing others. There are very few who assume the Instructor role and even fewer who seek them out. Most Instructors are older Necromancers who have retired from active service, but some are requested by the Council to take on the role, especially if they have developed a specialized technique that would otherwise be lost upon their death. Unfortunately, the average Instructor struggles against the assumption that they only teach because they can no longer serve in their primary role. Instructor is often taken as a sub-specialty, and those who take it as a primary specialty may go unrecognized for lack of another way to distinguish themselves. [nextcol] @ [nextcol] The Guiding Hand [/columns] Missionary [columns] All Paths To Mother [nextcol] @ [nextcol] Within the Plaguelands a Necromancer is almost universally treated with honor and respect, but this esteem can turn to suspicion - or even fear - the further one travels from the Wyrmwound. Missionaries seek to remedy the infamous reputation that Necromancers have produced abroad through the enticements of song, storytelling, and even poetry, though others prefer to impress through oration and displays of power. When Missionaries find a receptive audience they will regale listeners with the glories and miracles Necromancers perform in the name of Plaguebringer, and cajole the strong and the fearless to test themselves at the Necromantic Trials. Perhaps unexpectedly, Missionaries are unlikely to take sub-specialties and most prefer to remain pure Missionaries. Those that do specialize, however, often take the supporting roles of Inculcator or Ambassador. [/columns] Mutagist [columns] Evolution is the most sacred of Mother’s tenets, and one that the Mutagist embraces more than any other specialty. They are never satisfied with what is, but instead seek to push the limits of their magic, their bodies, and life itself to discover what can be. Mutagists pull from all magic and knowledge of Sornieth, combining a diverse array of techniques and sciences to develop their mutations. Specialties
v6E2Ley.png
All Necromancers can manipulate disease, however Councilors further develop this power into diverse specialties to increase their standing and set themselves apart. There are eighteen specialties that Councilors can choose from, and each Councilor can develop up to 3 different specialties.

• Advisor

• Ambassador

• Assassin

*
• Crusader

• Diagnosan

• Duelist

*
• Healer

• Holy Knight

• Hunter

*
• Inculcator

• Infectionist

• Instructor

*
• Missionary

• Mutagist

• Oracle

*
• Priest

• Sage

• Shaman

A Councilor's first specialty is their primary specialty. This is a specialty they are naturally gifted in, or are inherently drawn towards. The second specialty can be chosen to compliment the first, to expand the Councilor's abilities, or to gain access to some privilege or society that the Councilor wishes to be a member of. Not all Councilors choose a second specialty, and many never attempt to specialize in a third due to the investment of time and effort that is required. Those that do take a third specialty often do so as a show of power and ability, though some simply have diverse interests that they wish to develop.

fwrhzGD.png
With each specialty that a Necromancer takes, they are assigned a ranking for that specialty. The specialty rank indicates the degree of mastery the Necromancer has over that specialty.

@ A Rank of 1 indicates the Necromancer is still a beginner in the specialty.

@ A Rank of 2 indicates the Necromancer has advanced knowledge, and should be considered an expert in the specialty.

@ A Rank of 3 indicates complete mastery over the specialty.

Due to the exponentially increasing effort it takes to develop each specialty, a Necromancer can never have a higher ranking for a sub-specialty than for their primary specialty, and if they have a third specialty it can never have a higher ranking than their second specialty.

Advisor
b25K0Rw.png
Every Facet Joined To Mother
@ Advisors specialize in guiding their clan along Mother’s path. They stand at the Left Hand of the rulers and leaders they serve, providing legitimacy to positions of power and ensuring any decision or strategy is in line with Mother’s will. Unlike Ambassadors, Advisors serve where Plaguebringer is already recognized as the ruling deity of the clan, and develop skills of strategy and management over diplomatic skills. Occasionally Advisors can be shadow rulers in their own right, leading their clan through a figurehead. Advisors often take sub-specialties as Priests or Oracles in order to better serve their clan’s interests and call down the blessings of Plaguebringer’s approval.
GLs9auY.png
Ambassador
Ambassadors are primarily found outside the Plaguelands spreading Mother’s influence across the lands of Sornieth. They are masters of persuasion, flight customs, and courtesy, and will use their extensive social toolset to win over heathen hearts for Plaguebringer’s cause. Within the Plaguelands, Ambassadors may treat with rival clans to broker peace or treaties to better serve the interests of all. They also serve as representatives and messengers between the primary Council in Plague and regional Necromantic Councils located in other Flights. While Ambassadors and Diagnosans often share a similar skillset, the more ambitious Diagnosan rarely strays far from their regional Council headquarters. @

Assassin
41UvWHL.png

Swift Subtle Silent
@ Assassins rarely perform their duties for clan leaders, as matters of life or death are sacred to Plaguebringer, and the Goddess teaches that the pursuit of survival trumps petty concerns of politics. Instead, Assassins are called on as a last resort to remove dragons of authority or influence who have been deemed enemies of Plaguebringer, or otherwise detrimental to Council goals. Unlike the prey of Holy Knights, these dragons cannot be openly targeted by the Council. The specialties of Assassin and Infectionist are often linked, as mastery of plague and illness lends itself well to incidental deaths.
GLs9auY.png
Crusader
Crusaders are warrior Necromancers who wield their power as weapons on the battlefield. They are at the frontlines of the Wandering Contagion, seeking to push Plague boundaries into the surrounding Flight lands. They face off against both foreign dragons and Beastclan, and unlike the often-solitary Holy Knight, are experts in teamwork, finding ways to combine their Necromantic powers to even greater effect. Off the battlefield, Crusaders with a Holy Knight sub-specialty are called upon to ward off or take down Emperors when the need arises. These dragons are widely considered to be the elite of Crusading Necromancers. @

GLs9auY.png
Diagnosan
FQZnD0N.png

By Mother's Word
@ Diagnosan is the specialty of the career Councilor, and nearly all high level Councilors have taken Diagnosan as their specialty or sub-specialty. A Diagnosan is a Necromancer’s Necromancer, they translate the philosophy and sacred teachings of Plaguebringer into policy that is meant to guide all Necromancers in carrying out Mother’s Will. Necromancers who take Diagnosan as their first specialty are often seen as bluntly declaring self-interest over the good of the Necromantic Order, and so the savvier Councilors will take Diagnosan as a sub-specialty.
GLs9auY.png
Duelist
In Necromantic society duels allow two of Mother’s Chosen to settle their differences when words will not suffice. In this sense, Duelist is a philosophy as much as a specialty.

Healer
S0enBhi.png
Survival Above All
@ The powers of the Necromancer mirror Mother’s dominion of Life that comes from Death, and some choose to nurture the healing attributes that set the Necromancer apart from the lesser types. Healers use their Plague magic to strengthen the body and grant the ability to survive when survival would otherwise be impossible. The Healer Necromancer is set apart from the more traditional healer by their motivations, which are typically far murkier and more complicated than simply wishing to return a dragon back to health. Injured or ill dragons usually choose a Necromantic Healer only if they are disciples of Plaguebringer, or if all other options have been exhausted.
GLs9auY.png
Holy Knight
Holy Knights are Mother’s champions. They are guardians, soldiers, and the keepers of the greater reputation of Necromancers as a whole. Unlike Assassins they act in the open, with the full authority of the Council behind them. Holy Knights serve in a variety of roles, from guarding places or dragons, providing honorary escorts to high ranking Council members, and hunting down unholy necromancers, lying prophets, rampaging Ghouls, Lichs, and false Necromancers. Where Necromancers are Mother’s Left Hand, Holy Knights are the hand that holds the bladed shield. @

The Bladed Shield
GLs9auY.png
Hunter
f8LBU4J.png
Tooth And Claw
@ Where Assassins and Holy Knights are tasked with tracking down draconian targets and eliminating them, Hunters are most often found in the wilds of Sornieth looking for Beastclan or animal prey. Some Necromancers look down on Hunters as being ‘menial laborers’, however it takes great skill to master the Hunter arts. They specialize in non-lethal capture, and are often called upon to recover Plague-themed familiars, research subjects, and the occasional virulent Ghoul when one is needed alive. Hunters specialize in plagues that incapacitate or paralyze and are equally likely to take Healer or Infectionist as a sub-specialty. A solid grasp of both techniques is necessary to become a successful Hunter.
GLs9auY.png
Inculcator
Necromancers have a long and storied history and an evolving culture that sets them apart from other Plague societies. Inculcators are the keepers of this knowledge. They are the writers; the readers; the researchers into the past and into Necromantic mores and customs. @

We Keep The Words
GLs9auY.png
Infectionist
BgmNJn5.png
The First And Last
@ As a specialist in infection and disease, the Infectionist is by far the most common Specialty for Necromancer and Necroservus alike.
GLs9auY.png
Instructor
Instructors specialize in teaching their fellow Necromancers by passing down skills and knowledge to the next generation. @

The Guiding Hand
GLs9auY.png
Missionary
du2TGuv.png

All Paths To Mother
@ Within the Plaguelands a Necromancer is almost universally treated with honor and respect, but this esteem can turn to suspicion - or even fear - the further one travels from the Wyrmwound.
GLs9auY.png
Mutagist
Evolution is the most sacred of Mother’s tenets, and one that the Mutagist embraces more than any other specialty. They are never satisfied with what is, but instead seek to push the limits of their magic, their bodies, and life itself to discover what can be. Mutagists pull from all magic and knowledge of Sornieth, combining a diverse array of techniques and sciences to develop their mutations. Most Mutagists rely heavily on “assistants”, willing or otherwise, which can range from Beastclan, Familiars, dragon subjects, and especially the ‘lesser’ of the Necromantic variants. Those Mutagists that involve Ghouls, Neutralized Ghouls, and Wraiths in their research often take the sub-specialty of Shaman. Other common specialties include Infectionist, Healer, and occasionally Inculcator. @

Oracles provide guidance for dragons who face difficult decisions, sending up their queries to Plaguebringer and advising on ways to receive Her blessings. These Necromancers have the ability to make friends among the different Flights while spreading the word of the Plaguebringer’s Will, and they listen as much as they speak. They are singular amongst Necromancers, and Plaguelings in general, in that they seek to harmonize the needs of Plague with those whom Plague seeks to assimilate. They believe that spreading Plague ideology can be a peaceful pursuit, and that once understanding has been achieved, foreign Flights will embrace Plaguebringer of their own accord. In Council, The Voices are often bitterly at odds with Crusader factions, and seek to convince Councilmembers of diplomatic solutions in the case of conflict with clans of other Flights. Beast Speakers have chosen to strike out from dragonkind and administer to Beastclans instead. They spread worship of the Plaguebringer and perform Necromantic duties once their chosen Beastclan has accepted the Plaguebringer as their primary deity. While others may look down on them for joining with Beastclans, these Necromancers are some of the only dragons familiar with the various diseases of Beasts, and once mastered, can wield them to devastating effect amongst Dragonkind. Beast Speakers have no official representation as a Council Faction, however many Councilmembers are tacit supporters of Beast Speaker philosophy, and will argue their case when Beastclan issues arise. While any dragon can serve as a referee, even those who do not possess plague magic, Necromancers are preferred in that role to lessen the chance of an unintended death. Conduits are Necromancers who act as professional referees, especially in Duels conducted for entertainment or sport. They have mastered both the Healer and Infectionist arts, and often follow the Duelist philosophy in their approach to serving Plaguebringer. In addition they have taken vows of neutrality, swearing never to influence the outcome of a Duel. Because they are viscerally aware of every attack and defense channeled through their bodies, they provide a scoring system for professional Duelists, allowing more nuance to rankings beyond a win/loss count. Conduits are highly respected within Necromantic society, and can reach the same level of fame as accomplished Duelists. The Hollow Sight are a society of Necromancers who have been robbed of a sense or a piece of their body through the Trials. These Necromancers rely on other senses or abilities to perform their roles and support each other with guidance and shared resources. The Hollow Sight maintain a library of diseases and mutated viral strains so that their members can use these specimens to develop their diagnostic abilities. This disease library is the most comprehensive in the Plaguelands, and many able-bodied Necromancers petition The Hollow Sight to gain access to it. They are a powerful Faction within the Council, standing as a symbol of survival and perseverance over any obstacle. Neutralizers are Necromancers who specialize in saving these unfortunates from a drawn-out, excruciating death, neutralizing the infection that has run rampant in their systems. They often work in teams to track down Virulent Ghouls across Sornieth, neutralizing them and bringing them back into the fold. Some may do this for glory, others for power, and some few out of simple compassion. Neutralizers are often marked by having a Neutralized Ghoul (or several) among their companions. As a Faction they support the rights of Neutralized Ghouls and condemn execution of Virulent Ghouls. Their goal is to get soldiers back up and fighting as soon as possible, whatever that may take. As such, their methods are quite unorthodox, ranging from infecting the area around a broken bone with a pathogen that destroys nerves as a pain reliever, to keeping a mortally-wounded warrior conscious long enough to carry on fighting via the use of a stimulating neurotoxin. Their concern lies not with actually treating injuries or diseases, and saving lives, but with keeping their comrades alert and alive for as long as is needed to dispatch their enemies. What happens afterwards is irrelevant. Detractors on the Council are quick to accuse Revitalizers of heresy, claiming their methods are not in line with Plaguebringer’s most important tenet of survival. Some go so far as to accuse them of the abomination of reanimating the dead. Revitalizers vehemently deny such accusations. In their eyes, if someone is not strong enough to survive a fight on their own merits, the best course of action is to at least make them useful to the Plaguebringer in their final minutes. Societies and political Factions are lore groups that bring Necromancers together around a core idea, belief, function, or purpose. They are organized by Specialty, and are a vehicle by which a participant can further explore Necromantic society, make lore connections, or personalize their Necromancer(s). Peruse the list of Societies and Factions below and then feel free to add your username to the Council Society Membership lists.

All of the Societies and Factions listed below were created or inspired by members of the community! If you would like to submit your own Society or Faction for consideration, or see instructions for doing so, please follow the link below.

These Ambassadors perform two tasks: they bring the Voice of the Plaguebringer beyond the wastelands, and they bring the voices from beyond the wastelands back.

'Beast Speaker' is more of a nickname, as many of these Necromancers prefer solitude rather than organized Necromantic societies.

The Eyes of Mother serve the Council by gathering information among suspected enemies of Plaguebringer. They report to their Diagnosan contact whenever blasphemy or other crimes are committed that could endanger the Necromantic Order. Officially they use other titles and disguise themselves as Ambassadors or Advisors, but their eyes are always open. Sometimes they are sent by the Council to gather information on a specific dragon or clan, or infiltrate clans that defy the Mother’s teachings. Those that possess the skills of an Assassin often carry out their espionage and assassinations with none ever the wiser. Members without a sub-specialty in Assassin will serve only as intelligence gathers, so that when accusations of heresy are laid against a dragon or clan it does not lead to distrust of Necromantic diplomats as a whole.

Killing or permanently injuring the referee is an immediate defeat, however deaths and injuries can occur.

Sometimes the Trials are cruel, and senses are sacrificed.

Virulent Ghouls are a grim reminder that not all find welcome in the Mother's embrace - or, at least not the welcome they expected.

Though the Revitalizers may describe themselves as combat medics, they do not seek to aid their patients.

Like the Neutralizer, a Reclaimer’s work revolves around Virulent Ghouls. Unlike the Neutralizer, Reclaimers do not seek to cure the Ghouls under their care. In fact, the ideal target of a Reclaimer is a Ghoul beyond saving. Reclaimers focus on the hopeless cases, seeking to to find a use for Ghouls who have otherwise proven to be absolute failures. The Ghouls they capture are put to many purposes. Many are given to Shamans, Mutagists, or Inculcators so that they might serve a higher purpose. The saner Ghouls are harnessed and sent to clans outside of the Scarred Wasteland so that the rampaging infection within them can weaken - if not outright destroy - clans foolish enough to provide them sanctuary. The truly feral ones are typically kept confined until an opportunity arises for them to wreak havoc on the battlefield. This practice is frowned upon by some, as it poses a danger to allies as well as enemies in a non-targeted attack. Reclaimers and Neutralizers often oppose each other in Council, and vehemently disagree on the role of Neutralized Ghouls in serving Plaguebringer’s Will. They scoff at the god-given power of the Necromancers and they defy the natural order of things. While other Necromancers have dedicated their lives to eradicating the dangerous lies of these dissenters by force, Inoculators have opted to take on a more diplomatic role. Once a heretic or a group of heretics is tracked down by the Lost Seekers - the Hunter branch of the Innoculators - these researchers interview them to discover what makes them tick, how they came to hold their unorthodox views, and how many others like them exist. Sometimes Inoculators will go undercover to reveal what even the most intense interrogation techniques cannot. Their goal in collecting such information is to decipher what can cause a dragon to turn from Mother. Inoculators believe that by understanding the mechanisms by which heresy spreads, they can eliminate it at its roots. Perhaps even those who have already fallen victim to the siren song of blasphemy could be set back on the right path, and Innoculators sometimes pass on their research subjects to Counselors for guidance. Treating symptoms does not cure a disease. Treating the root cause does. That is the role of an Inoculator. Algiotaphs station themselves around the Wrymwound and Rotrock Rim, seeking those who have recently completed their Trials to interview them, no matter the outcome. They take detailed notes that they compile into reports to send back to the Council, and many have an extensive personal library of completed interviews that provide a valuable resource to all who are interested in the Trials. Those Algiotaphs who are particularly skilled in the Healer and Infectionist arts seek out Virulent Ghouls to conduct similar interviews, eager to understand their state and the day-to-day changes the Ghoul observes in its own deterioration. With this combined research they hope to provide an understanding of the factors that determine Trial outcomes, and the reason why some Virulent Ghouls live for decades while others perish within days. Their work is often controversial, as detractors argue that only Plaguebringer decides who will pass and who will fail the Trials, and Her reasons are Her own. Because of this, Algiotaphs often find themselves caught between the more scientific minded and the traditionalists in Council debates. Not every Necroservus undergoes this training, but it is considered highly desirable, especially if one wants to become a Necroservus of a powerful or highly regarded Necromancer. Formalists also support Necroservi in their duties and provide counsel and advice when needed. As a Faction, Formalists advocate for Necroservi rights, and argue that Necroservi should be able to serve as Council members in their own right without needing a Necromancer patron. To become a Whisperer of Spirit and Bones, these Necromancers must go on a spiritual journey to commune with the elemental spirits and request the permanent aid of a single spirit from each of the different Deity’s lands. Attempting to acquire multiple spirits of one element type results in rivalry and sometimes none sticking around. Once they have gathered their small pantheon of spirits, the Necromancer returns home and begins learning the quirks and preferences of their spirits so they may use them to aid others. During this time, the Necromancer will build effigies for each of their spirits, made of bones of creatures from each spirit’s homelands, some aspects of their chosen elements, and other bits and baubles that the spirit is fond of. This set of effigies are kept somewhere safe, as breaking one could cause the spirit to deny their aid to their Necromancer until reparations and sacrifice are made. A Necromancer following this calling is often sought out by others to get assistance with curing unusual maladies (or possibly spreading them) where the Necromancer themselves may not be able to simply draw it out. The Whisperer will cast bones into an element related to the illness to figure out which of their spirits would be best to assist. Not all bone castings may be favorable to the dragon seeking aid. If this dragon is lying, or has brought the situation upon themselves, the spirits will refuse to help. If the elemental spirit accepts, the Necromancer will build a temporary effigy for their spirit to inhabit. This effigy is given to the dragon seeking aid, along with instructions on what to do with it. These effigies will usually be left near the individual they are helping or harming, and the spirit will quietly go to work fortifying or weakening said individual. Once its work is done, the temporary effigy will break, and the spirit will return to their Necromancer. If the dragon who originally sought the Necromancer out for aid attempts to abuse the spirits, the effigy will break, and it is up to the whim of the spirit if they simply leave, or spitefully curse the dragon who tried to use them incorrectly. A few believe that the blood of a Neutralized Ghoul can be used to tap into the Scarred Wasteland itself (regardless of flight) as a Neutralized Ghoul has both suffered the worst failure and been redeemed. What better way to understand the Plaguebringer Herself than through these individuals? The pair perform a ceremony where the Neutralized Ghoul willingly gives a few drops of their blood to the Necromancer, who will brew them into a concoction. Once prepared, the Necromancer will consume this concoction and enter a trance-like state in which they channel Plaguebringer’s Will into the Neutralized ghoul. The Necromancer may then attempt to understand Her Will through the mouthpiece of the Neutralized Ghoul. A Necromancer who follows this ideal must be mindful of how often and how long they perform these ceremonies, as partaking in a Neutralized Ghoul's blood is risky, and the Necromancer must constantly fight the effects of the Neutralized Ghoul's blood just enough to stay alive, but not enough to fully cure themselves. Once they have received the information they desire, the Necromancer may fully cure themselves, and the line to the Plaguebringer is broken. Only a Necromancer with immense constitution and will should even consider walking this path. As they remain faithful and loyal to the Plague Mother, they have been given a choice to submit to the will of the Council, supplanting their own judgment with that of the Council's. As a symbol of this submission, they are ceremonially muzzled, showing that they no longer act under their own judgement, and may only hunt their prey when the muzzle is removed. They are assigned another Necromancer, often a Diagnosan, who holds their metaphorical leash and is nominally charged with sending them out into the world. They will execute using the blade or other weapon only, and will not let the Lich die by Mother’s Gift, for they do not deserve it. While it is controversial, the Traveling Talons accept Wraiths, Neutralized Ghouls, and even Virulent Ghouls into their ranks, as long as the individual proves their dedication in eliminating the Shade threat.

Any variant is able to become a Venator, though Necromancers make up the majority of the Venator’s ranks. A Venator will do their best to capture familiars without injuring them so that they are ready to serve their Necromancer as quickly as possible. After the hunt, a Venator will sell their catch to a Necromancer specialized in taming and training wild familiars to be suitable companions to Necromancers. It takes immense skill and bravery to neutralize a Virulent Ghoul, but it takes just as much to capture one alive.

From the shadiest slums tucked away in the darkest corners of the Wasteland, to the Council itself, there exist heretics: dragons who, for one reason or another, reject Mother’s teachings.

Algiotaphs, or pain collectors, are fascinated by the questions of why some dragons pass the Trials and others fail, and if a dragon becomes a Virulent Ghoul what determines the speed of its deterioration.

Plaguelight is dedicated to the collection and categorization of all forms of knowledge, and the cultivation of diplomacy to gain more. The group's icon is a red lantern: a symbol of a light to drive back the Shade, lit by the power of Plague. Its core founding concept is that the Shade is the greatest danger to every Flight, and that knowledge shared is power gained. To that end, Plaguelight members are those Necromancers and their allies who travel Sornieth to trade information and bring it back to the Plaguelight Library. Plaguelight's membership is loose and unstructured. Though made up mostly of Inculcators and Ambassadors, by nature of its goals any Necromancer may join. Even trusted outsiders may aid in the society's mission, though they'll never be granted access to the more secret chambers of the Library. Official envoys of Plaguelight will often bear red lanterns as a symbol of their mission, and this symbol may become respected as a neutral, or even friendly declaration to other clans.

Plaguelight has an open, library-style lore thread where anyone can post in-universe books or scrolls, links to existing pieces, or stories about their characters visiting, contributing to, or otherwise interacting with the Plaguelight Library. It is a place to interact & post stories and lore!

Imprisoners of The Seed; a task for the devoted and powerful. These Necromancers sit in meditation over the Seed, slowly mutating its blasphemous energy to Plaguebringer's cause. While it is a prestigious calling, few devotees care for the notoriety of their post. These Necromancers live in monkish contemplation on the meaning of "Necromancer" and the purest form of their virulent power. Most Carceris rarely leave their fortress around The Seed, choosing instead to send out messages to the Council for supplies or extra hands as needed. This leads to two distinct groups within the Faction: those who attend to the needs of the Faction, making sure there is housing, food, and providing general support; and the most devoted, who are bricked into the walls of simply outfitted cells to live their entire lives in philosophical contemplation and magical battle. The Seed, blight it, wants to grow. But the Carceris will rot that Life before it escapes its cradle.

Survival Guides are the battle scarred, the war torn, the permanently injured, who have earned a few lifetimes of rest. They train common dragons in how to pass the Trials, and Necromancers in how to overcome the more informal trials of life in the service of Mother. They help these individuals pin down their strengths and their weaknesses, and find where they belong within the Necromantic Order. Survival Guides rarely take part in Diagnosan squabbles of power, and are considered completely neutral members of the Council. While the vast majority of Survival Guides are Necromancers, a very few come from the ranks of other variants.

Though they are often overlooked, the duties of a Necroservus are not easy to perform. Dragons who hoped to become Necromancers may not even fully understand their new role after failing to pass the Third Trial. For this reason, Formalists teach ambitious Necroservi the nuances of their duties. Formalists are usually Necroservi, sometimes Necromancers, but it is their experience and knowledge of the nuances of Necromantic rituals, politics, and societal rules that makes them good instructors.

Mutualists cultivate mutualistic organisms over disease, often focusing on creatures that are traditionally considered to be parasites. Some hollow out their bodies, playing host to parasitic colonies in order to reap physical and magical rewards. Others pick and choose from the genomes of several creatures, combining them to create the perfect symbiote or even grafting pieces into their own DNA. These Necromancers work closely with viruses and the biological tools they provide, or directly with the mutualistic organism itself if the Necromancer’s Infectionist and Healer abilities are advanced enough. The Flesh Mechanist is a somewhat controversial society preferred by Lightning Necromancers. They create cancerous diseases which grow into massive piles of flesh. These raw materials are integrated into automatons developed by the Lightning Flight to create mobile, walking diseases. More advanced Mutagists can grow a sort of pseudo-brain within the growths, giving them intelligence. The automatons are useful as non-sentient servants to perform duties too menial for even the Necroservi, and can also be used to spread strains of diseases in environments hostile to normal draconic life. Many are wary of such unnatural creations, but Flesh Mechanists argue that, like Plaguebringer Herself, they seek only to bring forth life from the decay of disease.

They take their work quite seriously and will argue for hours on obscure points; such as the best polishes to keep their collection shiny to detailed discussions of what familiars and trinkets make their little curios happiest. Members of this Faction are Necromancers who have dedicated themselves to studying not only the casting of bones, but the Festival elements and spirit familiars as well.

This role is restricted to a Necromancer with a Neutralized Ghoul tied to them.

Council Members
v6E2Ley.png

This is where to find the Councilors and their entourages that make up the Necromantic Council. Not all Councilors have entourages, however many have servants or lower ranked Councilor followers who support them politically or personally, and are affiliated with them in some way. Note that a user may have several Councilors, each with their own entourage and their own post.

Instructions:
  • Make a post in this thread for each of your Councilors and their entourages (Necroservi, followers, lackeys, etc). You may have several Councilors that serve within the entourage of a dominant Councilor or each may have their own post depending on your lore. Servus generally do not lead their own entourages but exceptions could apply.
  • You are encouraged to provide an emblem for each of your Councilors. You can draw your own emblem, commission an artist, or use the default emblem of Mother's Left Hand. You could also make one using this online emblem maker. If you have an emblem please provide one for each Councilor or let 3idolon know you're using the default emblem.
    * Want to try out the online emblem maker but don't know where to start? @NotMothman (#288697) has kindly volunteered to answer questions and/or help turn your emblem ideas into reality! Feel free to reach out to them.
  • Council members of the Ruling or Guiding standing will earn a flag on which to fly their emblem. Ping 3idolon if one of your high-ranking Council members achieves the Ruling or Guiding standing and you wish to claim your flag.
  • Councilors and their entourage qualify for the Elite Registry on the main thread! If you'd like to submit your dragon(s) to the Elite Registry, fill out the form below.
Elite Registration Form
Please complete one form for each dragon

Don't have photo shop? No worries! Also provided are tutorials for how to make your badge in Fire Alpaca, a free editor for your desktop, or Pixlr, a free editor you can use in your browser! Please read through the tutorial of your choice, and if you have any further questions please ping @WyldAngel. The .pxd file and tutorial links are found below! Note: Mother's Left Hand badges include both Specialty # (e.g. 1st, 2nd, or 3rd specialty), and Rank (1, 2, or 3) information. From left to right, the bloodied claw indicates what specialty rank the badge is for. The sets of stripes around the sphere indicate Rank. In the examples listed above, the first badge provides specialty information only, indicating a Diagnosan Specialty. The second badge indicates Holy Knight as the 2nd Specialty, with a Rank of 1. The third (red) badge indicates Sage as the 3rd Specialty with the highest Rank of 3. The final textured badge indicates Infectionist taken as the 1st Specialty with a Rank of 2. Due to the sheer volume of Specialty Badges and variations for each Rank, a .pxd file is provided so that you can make your own!
