A Crossover Subspecies between Gladelings and Necromancers

Gladelings, though not well known throughout most of Sornieth, are highly revered by clans of the Viridian Labyrinth. Created by the Gladekeeper in Her image, they are caretakers of Her Flora, skilled in healing and nurturing her other creations. They protect Her realm and spread Her magic and Her word.

Most are undyingly loyal to the deity who created them. But there must always be exceptions, those who are drawn to the enemy in search of power, notoriety, knowledge, or other motivations all their own.

It is not a secret that the Plaguebringer tests the endurance, will, and strength of Her followers who wish to prove themselves worthy of Her recognition and Her power. That from these tests can arise powerful Necromancers who spread Her Word and Her Plague throughout Sornieth. And this power can be gifted to any dragon who is strong enough and loyal enough to Her to pass Her Trials.

Some Gladelings come to attempt the Necromantic Trials. Though they take on different appearances and have differing abilities based on their performance in these Trials and how they are judged by Plaguebringer, they are collectively known as Blightlings.

In the distant past, Gladelings were all hatched as Wildclaws, Nature's own native species, with the colors of the Gladekeeper and camouflaging patterns to let them blend into the thick vegetation of the jungle. These Gladelings were able to communicate with the Gladekeeper from anywhere within the Viridian Labyrinth, and this close connection to the Gladekeeper lent them magical abilities: to make plants grow in any condition, and to revive sick or dying plants. The Gladelings formed exclusive clans who roamed the Viridian Labyrinth, carrying with them seeds, cuttings, and saplings, with the mission of caring for the plantlife that inhabited the Gladekeeper's territory and spreading this life wherever possible. Over time, the initial burst of power that allowed for the hatching of Gladelings was spent, and the numbers of new Gladelings dwindled. To preserve their lineage and their calling, the decision was made to mingle with dragons of other breeds and colors - but as their bloodline became thinned, their abilities waned. Gladelings remained prodigious gardeners and caretakers of plants for their clans, but they did not have quite the abilities of Gladelings at their beginnings, and they lost their abilities to communicate with the Gladekeeper that they once had. The thinning of the bloodlines allowed for more frequent misidentifications to occur, and dragons from other flights or with other patterns of the Gladekeepers colors began to be acclaimed as Gladelings themselves. These Counterfeit Gladelings persisted and sometimes took advantage of other dragons in the guise of true Gladelings - sometimes even joining clans of Gladelings. It was the Bounty of Elements that changed everything. With the extreme burst of magical energy, new kinds of Gladeling were hatched once more. Prophets once again roamed the lands - and with them, New Prophets, their eyes blooming with the magical energy of the Gladekeeper. Strange eyes peered out across the lands, serving as the Gladekeepers eyes. The bloodlines of the Gladelings were renewed. To rule one must command with strength, and respect is earned through survival. However, if there were an analog of nobility in Plagubringer's wastes it is well represented by the Necromancers. Serving triple roles as advisors, infectionists, and priests, Necromancers are regarded as aspects of the Plaguebringer's Will personified. To have one serve a clan is recognized as a great honor and a sign of Her favor. Those outside the Plaguelands can be confused by the title, as Plaguebringer's enmity toward zombies and those that deal with them is well known. However, Mother's first servants do not take their name from its contemporary usage, but instead choose to reclaim the word's original root, as found in necrosis, to describe the mastery and manipulation of flesh-killing disease. Necromancers earn their title by meditating for twenty-three days and nights on the Rotrock Rim without aid or succor. Prestige is gained by choosing a perch closer to the Wyrmwound, but this also increases the risk of failure. Successful dragons choose a symbol of Necromantic rank and a familiar and thereby earn the title of Necromancer. True Necromancers can infect with a touch, as well as pull disease from the body at will. Dragons that can infect but not cure are known as Necroservus and often serve accomplished Necromancers. Failed Necromancers, or Ghouls, are riddled with plague, slowly dying, and are thought to embody Plaguebringer's displeasure. Some Plague dragons believe that She sends them into disobedient clans to bring down suffering and annihilation. A Ghoul's fate is death unless a Necromancer succeeds in neutralizing the plague within them, a far from certain outcome. Outside of the traditional hierarchy exist the Wraiths, dragons who did not pass the trial by their own merits and so forfeit their claim to a title. They do not possess the abilities of a Necromancer, nor the cursed fate of a Ghoul, instead existing in the nebulous space between success and failure. And then there are the traitors, the Lich. These renegades have sold their soul to the Shade and the Necromantic Council have sworn to hunt them down to the ends of Sornieth if need be. Necromancers face three trials to earn their mantle.

The first is the Trial of Infection. Plaguebringer must acknowledge their ambition by touching their flesh with plague. If no plague develops after thirteen days, the dragon is considered unworthy and fails.
The second is the Trial of Survival. Dragons prove their strength by fighting the plague and keeping it from consuming them whole by any means necessary. If they are successful the plague is suppressed and goes dormant, appearing on their skin as a series of slashing stripes across the spine and the edges of their wings.
The final test is the Trial of Contagion. By the dawn of the twenty-fourth day the dragon must prove its dominion of the plague by both passing it on to another being through touch and calling it back again. Control of disease is a divine gift and the true Necromancer should be able to spread and cure it with ease. If a dragon can spread the disease but not dampen it, they are given the inferior title of Necroservus, and are usually bound to an accomplished Necromancer as their servant.
Blightlings A Necromancer’s Power is given directly by the Plaguebringer, and one must prove themselves loyal to Her and worthy of Her notice in order to receive such gifts. As such, it is extremely difficult for a Gladeling to pass the Necromantic Trials, and those who bear the colors and eyes of Her sister are judged more harshly than any others. Blightlings are those Gladelings who attempt the Necromantic Trials and survive, and the mixing of their Nature Magic with the Plague that infects them leaves them with a unique appearance from other Necromancers, as well as unique abilities in some cases. While Gladelings are connected sometimes rather closely to the Gladekeeper, the ordeal of the Trials and the Plagebringer's judgment breaks this connection. Only those who prove their loyalty to Plague, or who impress Her with exceptional command over Her element, are in Her eyes and the eyes of the Council worthy of the Necromancer title and abilities. Similarly, only those Blightlings who are loyal to the Plaguebringer are worthy of the title Necroservus, though their inability to pass the third Trial leaves them with a lower status than their Necromancer brethren. Those Gladelings attempting the Necromantic Trials whose loyalties are questionable or who take the Trials with no intention to further the Plaguebringer’s cause often find themselves infected with Her most potent strains. Those who prove themselves worthy by passing Her Trials despite the additional challenge are titled accordingly, though the wisdom of this is sometimes challenged by Councilors who see them as a liability. But those who cannot rid themselves of these infections during the twenty three day period of the Necromantic Trials become Blightling Ghouls or Wraiths. Blightlings hold a precarious position. Even those retaining their Nature abilities or who remain loyal to the Gladekeeper are most often seen by dragons of Nature as traitors, and as such, they frequently try to assimilate into Necromancer society. Some Necromancers welcome them with open arms, while some remain wary of their motives and intentions. Very few rise high in rank or status, and even fewer serve the Necromantic Council in a meaningful capacity. Those loyal to the Plaguebringer are sometimes hunted by dragons acting on behalf of the Gladekeeper. Though it was only briefly planted in the ground, the vines, roots, and spores it released transformed the surrounding land, killing any in the path of its expansion. The stretch of vegetation that grew in moments at the heart of this scene was for some, an affront. An insult to their core beliefs. A direct attack on their home. And for some, it was a reminder of another home, of the true potential of Nature to overcome. Blightlings, already in a delicate position, find themselves torn apart. Some rejoice in the Seed's power and dominion, some wish to see the Final Infection used in retaliation, and still others work to restore an armistice in the face of almost certain conflict. There are those who work to convince dragons of Plague that the Seedscar was an accident, that the armistice was never meant to be broken. Those who return to the Viridian Labyrinth in attempt to warn dragons of Nature of the dangers that may come if armistice is not restored. And then there are those who attempt to inflame tensions and incite conflict in hope that their preferred side will finally prevail. A few slink away into the Wilds of Sornieth, wishing to avoid whatever calamity follows. Some Blightlings offer their help in attempts to reclaim the Seedscar for the Plaguebringer, and their knowledge of Nature Magic makes them ideal for the task of undoing it. Though even with their expertise, the process is challenging, laborious, and slow. Some experiment with new strains, mutating the Magic and the Life born from the Seed into new forms in attempts to weaponize its power. New diseases and toxins derived from the plants and spores of the Seedscar add to a growing arsenal to be used not only in their own tests of resilience and survival, but against any they perceive as enemies. Blightlings have grown in number after the Seed's release. As always, their motivations for attempting the Necromantic Trials are varied. Some are Gladelings who offer their service in undoing the Seedscar in a show of diplomacy, but find themselves drawn to Necromantic Philosophies of mutation and survival. Some risk the Trials in an attempt to learn more about their enemy or to gain an advantage over them. Some attempt the Trials to challenge their own strength and resilience. And still others have their own reasons. In this time of growing tensions, Blightlings could help to shape the future of Sornieth.

A Necromancer’s Power is given directly by the Plaguebringer, and one must prove themselves loyal to Her and worthy of Her notice in order to receive such gifts. Prophets, Counterfeits, and Watchers

Gladeling Prophets come from long lines of the Gladekeeper's servants, built in their original image and possessing greater Magical abilities than their brethren. They are said to carry out the will of the Gladekeeper and communicate with Her directly. As such, they tend to suffer the worst discrimination amongst Necromancers, as well as amongst clans of Nature where they are frequently condemned as Heretics.

While their greater Magic makes them more likely to pass the three Trials and develop new abilities as a result, they are otherwise indistinguishable from other Wildclaw Blightlings. Few choose to disclose their previous status.

Necromancers are those who pass all three of the Necromantic Trials within the allotted period, having contracted Her Plague during the Trial of Infection, cleared it from their bodies during the Trial of Survival, and proven their control over Plague by passing it onto another and then recalling it through touch. Most retain their Nature Magic, though they do not usually use it in the company of other Necromancers. Some find that their Nature abilities differ from what they were before, having mutated after this brush with Plague Magic, though this change is highly individual to each Blightling. While true Necromancers are marked by brown primary colors, flesh-colored wings, and red slashes down their spine and the fringe of their wings, a Blightling’s Nature magic mixes with the Plague they are infected with to produce different effects.

The Jungle green of their bodies is frequently tainted to produce a new shade and left mottled or striped. The slashes the Plague leaves in their hide turns a sickly yellow. And their wings are dulled to brown resembling wood or bark rather the foliage it had resembled before.

Some Blightlings who experience this will occasionally black out during these periods, others might lose control over their actions. Blightling Eye Lore is influenced by Necromancer and Gladeling Eye Lore, but does differ.

The affects of a Watcher's eyes on the dragon can vary widely depending on the eye type in question, as well as the manner in which they were obtained. These are summarized here, though due to the unpredictability of the mixing of Nature and Plague Magic that occurs during the Necromantic Trials, exceptions to these guidelines are not rare.
  • Glowing: Blightlings with Glowing Eyes tend to experience the greatest disparity between those who developed them early in life and those who develop them during their Trials.

Early: Glowing Eyes derived from Nature Magic or from the Gladekeeper herself give a Gladeling the ability to see extremely well at even great distance in any light conditions, and also grant them the ability to see in infrared and ultraviolet frequencies. Many experience changes in their vision when their connection to the Gladekeeper is interrupted or severed as a result of the Trials. Some lose some of the sight they once had, while some experience enhancements. In most cases, these Blightlings become extremely gifted in seeding cancers or other ailments of the skin, and have an uncanny ability to pinpoint sources of already existing ailments. They use this knowledge to either cure or exacerbate these conditions with great accuracy and efficiency.

During: Those who gain Glowing Sight as a result of the Trials make frightening Necromancers with powerful abilities to spread Her gifts. However, the Plaguebringer's Blessing rarely comes without price. These Blightlings nearly always lose their vision, and it is rumored that their eyes will sometimes change color to match Hers. Some Blightlings who experience this will occasionally black out during these periods, others might lose control over their actions. It is said that the Plaguebringer pushes aside their own consciousness and will in a perversion of Her sister's ability to see through Her Watchers, and that Blightlings in this state are directly enacting Her will. While some welcome these experiences and are sought after by dragons loyal to Plague hungry to be seen and heard by their deity, others go to great lengths in attempts to rid themselves of this intrusion into their minds.
  • Multigaze: Blightlings with Multigaze are afforded a 360 degree view of their surroundings, which in the wilds of Sornieth makes them prized scouts and lookouts who can quickly survey new and sometimes dangerous areas. Those who gain Multigaze eyes during their Trials are also frequently capable of holding multiple views at one time, and their ability to switch between them leaves them frequently suspected of suffering psychotic episodes due to the stress and lasting damage the Trials can inflict on one's mind. Though this is rarely the case, many find interactions with them disconcerting. These Blightlings are able to inflict nearly limitless varieties of Plague, though few become masters of any.
  • Facet: Blightlings with Faceted eyes can see ultravoilet wavelengths that most other dragons cannot, giving them a slight edge in distinguishing flora that may look identical to others, as well as the ability to more easily diagnose some varieties of Plague. They are frequently able to perceive many facets of a single issue, making them prized advisors and debaters amongst Necromancers who trust them. While Blightlings are usually distrusted and even sometimes considered outcasts in Necromancer society, listed here are those who have risen above this and earned the respect of their non-Blightling peers. Whether they have proven their loyalty through exceptional service to the Necromantic Council, gained extraordinary or new knowledge of the Plaguebringer's many strains and their properties, or simply demonstrated superior enough abilities to spread Her gifts that other Necromancers take note, they are the exception amongst their kind.

Requirements: Level 20+, any variant!
