As the Sisters warred and the Starseer isolated himself in the far reaches, new peoples rose from the devastated ruins of the Second Age. These "beastclans" saw promise in the shattered land. They could heal it and make it their own. The ancient technology and magic that had lead to such ruin was hidden from sight and wiped from memory. The beastclans started anew, taming the land and healing the destruction of an ancestor they would never know.
For a time, there was peace.

But soon the world shook and darkness rained from the sky. The mysterious Pillar that seemed eternal ...had shattered. Terrified and uncertain, the beastclans fought amongst themselves over who or what had ushered in this catastrophe.

The cause soon made itself known. Dragonkind was forged to war and claim territory in the name of its eleven patrons. These giants tore through beastclan lands, their elemental magics and titanic size too great to stand against.

Nations that had taken generations to build were obliterated and remade into wyrm caverns and roosts. Many clans were completely decimated. Those that remained were isolated from their bretheren. The beastclans were forced into hiding. The dark, inhospitable reaches of the land became safeholds and refuges.

Beastclans on the Rise! Encyclopedia Article

These are Beastclan-related canon tidbits that were mentioned in the discontinued Q&A posts by Aequorin.
[b]Why aren’t Miths counted as one of the Beastclans?
There are plenty of smaller groups of sentient beings in Sornieth that have not been elaborated on in our Encyclopedia. Generally these smaller groups don’t make a large enough impact to be considered contenders in Dominance, etc. x
[b]How do Kelp Beds familiars live with clans who are located in areas away from the sea/bodies of water (like in the middle of the Ashfall Waste)? I can't see a Maren sitting happily in a giant fishbowl, for example.
There are a variety of ways that the dragons maintain friendship with their familiar and companion. It is possible that the familiar could live far away from the dragon, and the dragon could visit them from time to time. In the case of an sentient species such as the Maren, it's possible that they "bond" over correspondences back and forth (though we're not sure that other dragon clans and beast clans would appreciate the friendship!) These are just a couple of possibilities, and every player may have a unique story for how their clan members maintain their friendship with their familiars! x
[b]How large are the Beastclan species, especially as compared to dragons?
The creatures of Flight Rising would not know what a "human" is, so consider the following a non-lore-friendly comparison!

Talonok are the smallest beastclan, around the size of a large bird of prey such as a bearded vulture.

Harpies and Longneck are about the size of a human.

Serthis and Maren are slightly larger than a human, and much longer.

Centaurs are the largest, and are the size of a horse. x

[b]I'm really curious about the sizes of the various beastclans compared to dragons. Are longneck comparable to fae or snappers? Stuff like that.
Most Beastclan aside from centaur are "human-sized". Talonok tend to be a bit smaller. Most dragons are much larger than the various Beastclan species, with the exception of Faes, which are typically smaller, and Spirals which tend to weigh in in a similar ballpark. x
[b]Are Maren and Serthis endotherms?

[b]Do other beastclans at war with dragons view the Dunhooves to be traitors because of their alliance with dragons, or are they just thought of as kind of odd?
The Dunhooves have always had a relatively good relationship with dragonkind, so they aren't seen as traitors. x
[b]When lairs hoardsell their stuff, where does it go? Who buys it?
They could be being sold to other NPC dragon clans. They could be being sold to the exalted dragons to provision their researchers, scribes, spies, medics, and warriors on the dominance warfront. They could be sold to provision exalted dragons who maintain their flight’s lands. They could be sold to beastclans that your clan is allied with. They could be sold to the courier dragons. They could be sold to merchant caravans that travel between territories. They could be sold to Crim… There are so many places the items could go that we welcome players to come up with their own ideas regarding what their clans do with their excess reserves and trade goods! The decision of who your clan trades with is up to your clan, after all! x
[b]Also what’s under the harpie’s masks? A “human” face, a birdlike face, or something else?
Clans who battle beside or against the harpy Beastclans have observed that fallen harpies have a “human” (though they wouldn’t use that word!) face covered in short feathers. They have no auricle. The opening of their ears is covered by short feathers that lay flat against the head. x
[b]Do Beastclan and Dragons speak the same language, or different ones? Do they have some sort of Pidgin to communicate if it’s the latter?
Beastclan and dragons do not speak the same language, though it is possible for a dragon to learn a particular beastclan’s language and visa versa. x
[b]Do the Beastclans speak Draconic, or do they have their own native language(s)? Do some of the Beastclans speak different languages from one another?
They all speak their own interclan languages, as well as a generalized, diplomatic language with which to communicate to the other Beastclans. Only a select few have learned Draconic, and it’s not known how many of those individuals have taken it up to speak or to spy… x
[b]Is the Arena a big fight zone where Longnecks and dragons willingly show up to battle?
The Longneck Beastclan and their allies hold this territory as a matter of honor and a way to test their mettle against dragon clans who accept their invitation to engage in combat. Of course, a few uninvited guests arrive from time to time! x
[b]I’ve heard about the Wandering Surge Priest in the Bamboo Falls, isn’t a familiar, nor does it have plans of ever becoming one. This was pretty fair…until the Beastclans update. Now the Corven side of the Talonoks only have one representative while everyone else has a parallel colorswap that can become a familiar. Is there a reason for this?
There is no particular reason. UPDATE: Wandering Surgepriest is now available as a familiar! x
[b]Dragons of the four founding flights have their own names for the planet, and all flights refer to it as Sornieth, which is Draconic for “our world.” In that case, what do the Beastclans, who presumably don’t use Draconic terms or flight-political names, refer to the planet as?
There’s still so much to know about the Beastclans and their prescribed history! It may be awhile before that term comes to light... x
[b]How is Maren pronounced? Like Mah-ren or like Mair-en?
Mair-en. x
[b]How do Sprangyroo ride boran?
They perch behind the head; boran are quite large! The armor across the back is certainly something you wouldn't want to sit on, and it's intended to keep dragons and other opponents from jumping on the back of the creature to try and "unhorse" its rider. x
[b]in the golem workshop, who actually created the factory/workshop that has all the robots/coliseum opponents? Like who founded the golem workshop, or made it?
The Workshop was founded by an industrious Lightning clan, then abandoned when it became too difficult to control. It began to operate again seemingly on its own, with Golems producing more Golems. It is likely that the workshop was activated by Luna Mith seeking to make lightning-powered armor. These Mith did not grasp the full scope of what restoring power to the factory would entail. x
[b]What does Swipp do with all the items you give him? Surely, a few canopic jars and skulls are not the most useful of things to have laying around...
Everything's got a value! For all you know, Swipp could be selling them on some sort of Beastclan black market or feeding Crim's penchant for collecting items. But we're not accusing him of anything... x
[b]How do dragons, in lore, compete for Dominance? By sending themselves off to be exalted and the like? Where do they even go, if so, to "exalt" themselves?
Dragons exalted to serve their deities will work as an army dedicated fully to advancing the agendas of their god. Typically they don't receive direct instructions, and will try and secure borders and expand territory, drive out Beastclans, and eradicate Shade remnants. x
[b]Do the pearls of Pearlcatchers hold any value, other than to the Pearlcatcher that made it? For example, would other dragons/beastclan creatures try to steal a pearl and pawn it off, or use it for jewelry? Or are they rather worthless, especially when compared to the pearls made by mollusks?
Dragons will typically not try and steal the pearls of Pearlcatchers, as they know what the pearls are/signify and would not utilize them in crafting. There would be no market for it.
It's possible that at some point in the past Beastclans may have collected found pearls as a beautiful gem; however, they have found that wearing or displaying such items tends to bring only trouble, invoking the ire of surrounding dragon clans, so it's not typically done. x
[b]Why aren't Aviars counted as members of the Talonok?
Aviar were a kickstarter sponsored familiar. So they’re in-game, but they’re not something we should use as a super integrated part of our lore. x
[b]What sort of homes do the Beastclans typically inhabit, other than the ones elaborated on in the Encyclopedia? For example, do some races live out in the open, underground, or in treetops, or do most construct buildings based on their culture and environment? Do any of them parallel known types of dragon lairs?
The beastclans have had to be extremely adaptable to hold their own in the age of the dragonkind. This means that their choices for building homes and communities can vary heavily based on the region or subregion they're living in. Also what’s under the harpie’s masks? A “human” face, a birdlike face, or something else?
Clans who battle beside or against the harpy Beastclans have observed that fallen harpies have a “human” (though they wouldn’t use that word!) face covered in short feathers. They have no auricle. The opening of their ears is covered by short feathers that lay flat against the head.

Is the Arena a big fight zone where Longnecks and dragons willingly show up to battle?
The Longneck Beastclan and their allies hold this territory as a matter of honor and a way to test their mettle against dragon clans who accept their invitation to engage in combat. Of course, a few uninvited guests arrive from time to time!
x
I’ve heard about the Wandering Surge Priest in the Bamboo Falls, isn’t a familiar, nor does it have plans of ever becoming one. This was pretty fair…until the Beastclans update. Now the Corven side of the Talonoks only have one representative while everyone else has a parallel colorswap that can become a familiar. Is there a reason for this?
There is no particular reason. UPDATE: Wandering Surgepriest is now available as a familiar!
x
Dragons of the four founding flights have their own names for the planet, and all flights refer to it as Sornieth, which is Draconic for “our world.” In that case, what do the Beastclans, who presumably don’t use Draconic terms or flight-political names, refer to the planet as?
There’s still so much to know about the Beastclans and their prescribed history! It may be awhile before that term comes to light...
x
How is Maren pronounced? Like Mah-ren or like Mair-en?
How do Sprangyroo ride boran?
They perch behind the head; boran are quite large! The armor across the back is certainly something you wouldn't want to sit on, and it's intended to keep dragons and other opponents from jumping on the back of the creature to try and "unhorse" its rider.
x
in the golem workshop, who actually created the factory/workshop that has all the robots/coliseum opponents? Like who founded the golem workshop, or made it?
The Workshop was founded by an industrious Lightning clan, then abandoned when it became too difficult to control. It began to operate again seemingly on its own, with Golems producing more Golems. It is likely that the workshop was activated by Luna Mith seeking to make lightning-powered armor. These Mith did not grasp the full scope of what restoring power to the factory would entail.
x
What does Swipp do with all the items you give him? Surely, a few canopic jars and skulls are not the most useful of things to have laying around...
Everything's got a value! For all you know, Swipp could be selling them on some sort of Beastclan black market or feeding Crim's penchant for collecting items. But we're not accusing him of anything...
x
How do dragons, in lore, compete for Dominance? By sending themselves off to be exalted and the like? Where do they even go, if so, to "exalt" themselves?
Dragons exalted to serve their deities will work as an army dedicated fully to advancing the agendas of their god. Typically they don't receive direct instructions, and will try and secure borders and expand territory, drive out Beastclans, and eradicate Shade remnants.
x
Do the pearls of Pearlcatchers hold any value, other than to the Pearlcatcher that made it? For example, would other dragons/beastclan creatures try to steal a pearl and pawn it off, or use it for jewelry? Or are they rather worthless, especially when compared to the pearls made by mollusks?
Dragons will typically not try and steal the pearls of Pearlcatchers, as they know what the pearls are/signify and would not utilize them in crafting. There would be no market for it.
It's possible that at some point in the past Beastclans may have collected found pearls as a beautiful gem; however, they have found that wearing or displaying such items tends to bring only trouble, invoking the ire of surrounding dragon clans, so it's not typically done.
x
Why aren't Aviars counted as members of the Talonok?
Aviar were a kickstarter sponsored familiar. So they’re in-game, but they’re not something we should use as a super integrated part of our lore.
x
What sort of homes do the Beastclans typically inhabit, other than the ones elaborated on in the Encyclopedia? For example, do some races live out in the open, underground, or in treetops, or do most construct buildings based on their culture and environment? Do any of them parallel known types of dragon lairs?
The beastclans have had to be extremely adaptable to hold their own in the age of the dragonkind. This means that their choices for building homes and communities can vary heavily based on the region or subregion they're living in.
x
Click the pamphlet above for the Warrior's Way advertisement, which mentions Beastclans and their lodging situation among the dragons!
