Before her, there had been nothing but ghosts to protect these lost souls. She shuddered to think of how many of those souls still haunted this jungle. While she was thinking of that, she heard someone tapping on the inside of one of the eggs. She encouraged the hatchling inside with her voice, blowing hot air on the egg. The hatchling was Nightblood, and she recognized Calla's comforting voice and wanted to see her. Calla stayed beside her, neglecting herself to make sure this hatchling made it. She'd never failed before and she wasn't about to start this late in her career. More than a millennium had passed since she'd raised her first egg, but many things had already happened this year that had never happened to her before. No matter how old she got, Calla knew that nothing could ever surprise her. So she was surprised when she was surprised by a young adult dragon suddenly crash landing just beside the Cave. "The Cave! I've found it!" raved the dragon, looking around until he noticed the pile of eggs. "No way, that's too perfect. I died. My precious little sibling is still an egg, even in death. He's old friends with Calla. They worked together. He doesn't want to see her go.
