But, first…” He looks up, at Vitello. “Vitello… stay safe, you hear?” He says, smiling shakily, “I’m relieved I was nearby last night, but…” He swallows again, “I won’t be around to protect you anymore, so- so stay safe, alright?” Vitello nods jerkily, trembling slightly, “I- Yeah, I will! You just- You just worry about yourself, Indiana. I’ll… I’ll see you again!” Indiana chuckles sadly, “I look forward to it.” He looks down at Flute, gesturing her forward, “C’mon, Flute, we’ve overstayed our welcome.” As the two start towards the entrance, Indiana looks at the rest of the gathered dragons, “I… Stay safe, all of you, alright?” When he reaches the entrance, he pauses once more, hesitating, “And… good luck.” With that, the two of them take off into the sky, Flute leaving a trail of cinder and ash in their wake. Suddenly, the sound of rattling came from the soil near their claws. They looked down and saw a brown serpent coiled on the soil with its tail shaking. A rattlesnake. It was next to one of Summer’s rather well-growing plants, and anyone could predict that Summer would be devastated if it was destroyed. Which was exactly what the killer did. They quickly tore at the leaves and ripped at the roots, leaving the poor plant a shadow of its former self. When the deed was done, they hastened to Summer’s cottage door and knocked. After hearing noise from inside which indicated that Summer was awake, they slipped into the darkness next to the house. Summer opened the door and looked around and above suspiciously. His gaze soon fell upon his demolished plant, and his face fell. With a cry of anguish, he hurried as fast as his old bones allowed him towards the plant. However, in his distraught state, he didn’t notice the rattlesnake slinking around the plant, already agitated by the killer’s movement, and stepped right onto it. The snake struck out at him, biting into his leg. The old Guardian fell to the ground in a scream of pain and shock. He scrambled to get up and away, but the snake struck him again. Eventually, the venom was too much for his body and he collapsed amidst his own beloved plants. Still standing beside the cottage, the killer watched until Summer didn’t get up again, then escaped into the night. Pitch was roused form his coma by nothing in particular, having slept for an entire day he felt quite well rested by now. Picking himself up, he stretched his spine out, each ligament popping and releasing held tension. The coatl brushed himself off and straightened his apparel, adjusted his pink bowtie, and decided to make his way to the garden he had heard faintly about.

'It has been quite a while since i've tended to anything that wasn't vampire children.'
He thought to himself. Bitterly at first, but then the realization of his freedom, however brief, put an ease on his mind. Perhaps tending to a garden is just the thing he should do today, to take hold of his new found freedom.

Upon reaching the garden Pitch was met with quite a sight, it appeared that the dragon who usually tended the garden had died. Death was something Pitch had become all too familiar with in all his years, the fang bites from the snake seemed eerily similar to a vampire's all of a sudden. His heart rate quickened and Pitch had to steady himself for a moment, remind himself where he is. And besides, what vampire would drain a dragon from the ankle?
Once he had regathered himself, Pitch moved in an attempt to tend to the body, but then he moved no closer. Even in this illusion of freedom, Pitch could not lift a finger to aid anyone, not even the dead. He sighed, unable to even call for help as that would be tangentially helping. Instead Pitch calmly made his way around the body for some tools, and meandered to a far corner of the garden to busy himself.

"EMERGENCY! DANGER!"

Xari was startled awake in a cold sweat. Terror filled her eyes as she took in her surroundings, her very colorful feathered companion fluttering erratically before her. She felt sick as her mind automatically assumed the worst - someone was dead, and it was her fault for sending an innocent home. No, no - she cannot assume that until she'd checked out what's going on. Shakily, she got out of bed, Polly jumping onto her shoulder as she made her way out of the sanctuary.

The area around them was quiet. Most dragons would still be asleep - besides Summer. She had known the Guardian who stayed around his garden nearby, and they had an amicable relationship, if not friendly. Suddenly, a horrible feeling crawled under her scales - she could feel her breathing getting shallower as she approached the place where the gardener usually was tending to his beloved plants.

Her worst assumptions were correct.

The world froze for a second as Xari's gaze fell upon the still dragon laying on the ground, his leg with covered with snake bites, his eyes closed permanently, his scales now cold and lifeless. Polly's chirping fell on deaf ears as her legs gave way, and she sank to the ground, her claws violently shivering as she laid it on Summer's, confirming a pulse that was no longer there.

She failed. She exiled Indiana, a dragon who had been the reason a guest hadn't died. She didn't find the killer responsible for his attempted murder. She was the reason their next one succeeded. She took the second chance someone gave her for granted, spat it in their face, and now it was an innocent who paid the price.

The Imperial could not stop the flood of tears that came.

She didn't notice Polly flying off to get help - all she could see were the remnants of that fateful day she lost her family, the burning building and the debris left in smoke. The haunting gaze of her "parents" who turned out to be heartless killers just like whoever murdered Summer. The loss, the pain - it was all too familiar.

Her tears fell onto the dead plant Summer was lying next to - whoever had done this was absolutely heartless. It was horrendously cruel to commit murder - and they had done so while also tearing apart what was his favorite thing before his own eyes. Xari's claws dug deeper into the earth in both anguish and fury - whoever did this will pay.

Pitch had gotten quite lost in his little activity, pruning some little roses at the edge of the flowerbeds. Where they roses? Mums? Pitch realized he wasn't very well versed with plants. Are you even supposed to prune these? Is this how pruning works?
Before he could worry himself silly, a voice cut through his mounting thoughts. It seemed help had come after all. His head turned lazily to greet the new dragon.

"Ah, at last someone has shown up. Unfortunately I haven't seen anyone who might be responsible for this act. Well, unless you count the rattle snake. Perhaps it was all just a silly accident, mortals are quite prone to those if I recall."

It really had been a long time since Pitch had been witness to a death that wasn't directly caused by someone else. The thought of someone dying on accident seemed so silly to him now, a small chuckle escaped him.

"But I suppose now that you're here something can actually be done about this body, which is good, I doubt this fellow would want his own body to poison his precious garden. Erm- speaking of. Might you know what exactly kind of flowers these are?"

Just being near her made Magenta want to do more than her purpose allowed. But the pretty bird did sound frantic, so perhaps things were more dire than simply a small accident... Stretching like a cat, her glass wings cracking and ringing as they returned from cold hardened glass to a warm, mobile state, newly heated by her flame. She slipped out of her chosen room, a small narrow tunnel that lead to a cozy chamber with an equally cozy bed of leaves and hay. Simple, yet wonderfully delightful. She called gently through his doorway, pausing before the little cat-brother's room. "I think Miss Xari, hmm, needs some help. It sounds... quite urgent." It would be entirely up to Selkirk to actually wake up, though, as Magenta would not be staying to watch him roll out of his pile of cats. The morning was just as beautiful as the last... sunsets never, ever get old for her. So nice... It was a tad dampened by by the strange urgency of the pretty bird's call, but she made to to appreciate the gift of sight her masters had given her. And perhaps the gift of some wisdom, too, otherwise she would not be able to comprehend true beauty. She made her way down the path to Summer's garden with all the leisure of the oblivious, lost to her peace and generally allowing herself to be a tad stupid. It was oddly freeing to be stupid and oblivious. The urgency just... slipped from her mind, so easily. Like a leaf floating away on a river of oil. Said urgency did, however, slam right back into her soul like a runaway Rockback when she saw the body. It did a good trample-tapdance combo too, once she saw Xari next to it. "Oh..." She said, her usually-wistful voice strained. "Oh, dear..." Hm. Magenta did not know how to handle this. This... this was new. She's fought dragons before, driven away a good few and seared some badly enough to near death, but... she'd never killed one. At least, if she did, she never saw them die. Her masters always took away the hurt ones. Oh, dear. Magenta approached the distraught imperial, hesitant and head bowed, like a nervous dog. She hovered for a moment, unsure, before folding her spiky wings back and smoothly slipping beneath one of her drooping wings. Her heartflame pulsed, once again warming her outer glass. ....Oh, dear... She didn't know what to do. Emotions... were not something she knew how to handle. Magenta barely understood them, to be honest. She was not made to feel so much. She wasn't sure if she could feel so much. This was too much thinking. Magenta let out a sigh, a flameless wave of heat. She just pressed her head against Xari's side, eyes closed, and hoped it was enough.

Keiran marched over the body, looking around at the gathered dragons, the torn plant by the body, and the marks on the dragon's ankles. A fire lit in Keiran's chest as he gritted his teeth. Someone here means harm to us, and whatever sick and twisted goal they are after...", Keiran clenched his teeth and took a deep breath before continuing, "they won't stop until we force them out or they kill more dragons." He stared down at the corpse, realizing quickly that his plans to return to Yarrow would have to wait for later. What kind of dragon would he be if he left the group to fight this evil off on their own? He was far used to running, but that was his past life. He flew down from his perch upon the cave roof to retrieve his belongings when he was interrupted by the sound of... a crying dragon. He followed the sound to a cottage near the cave entrance where the sanctuary guardian and others stood over... dear deities... it was a dead dragon.

Keiran marched over the body, looking around at the gathered dragons, the torn plant by the body, and the marks on the dragon's ankles. A fire lit in Keiran's chest as he gritted his teeth.

He looked at the Coatl and said with barely contained anger, "What happened here was no accident. Someone here means harm to us, and whatever sick and twisted goal they are after...", Keiran clenched his teeth and took a deep breath before continuing, "they won't stop until we force them out or they kill more dragons." He looked around at the gathered dragons, the fear and repulsion in their eyes.

"Vitello was just the beginning", he said firmly. "Until we exile this dragon, none of us will be safe."

He stared down at the corpse, realizing quickly that his plans to return to Yarrow would have to wait for later. What kind of dragon would he be if he left the group to fight this evil off on their own? He was far used to running, but that was his past life. Now... he needed to return what this (relatively) kind world had given him.

He frowned and followed it to see the dragons from before standing near a cottage, and they were surrounding... ...was that a dead body? Yikes. The most noticeable fact about it was the puncture wounds that pointed to either vampirism or snake bites, but given that it was on the dragon's legs it was probably the latter. Melo briefly wondered about how the snake had even gotten into the cottage, but decided that that wasn't relevant and frowned instead. Perhaps the dragon had just angered the snake instead? Snakes were prone to attacking when feeling threatened, after all? But that didn't explain the plant's current sorry state... unless someone had baited the dragon into seeing the plant and rushing out, then they had somehow angered the snake...? Why wasn't he panicking about the sight of a dead dragon instead? Probably because it hadn't fully sunk in yet. Melo realised he was theorising aloud as a couple of dragons glanced at him. Whoops.
