The first and foremost duty of any Necromancer is to further the works of Plague. Be that by carrying it and infecting others, be that by discovering or creating new strains, be that by curing the dragons or clans they serve - a Necromancer's first duty is to Plague itself.

So, of course, when faced with a new strain of Plague brought from beyond the Forbidden Portal, carried by the creatures that came through from the other side, Necromancers went to investigate - and Necromancers were infected.

They call it the Paleblood, the strange ichorous essence carried in the veins of the unreal creatures of the portal and the eldritch, ancient beings beyond it. Those Necromancers touched by it do not lose their connection to Plague, instead gaining a connection to something else - to something different.

These are the Necromancers infected by the blood, touched by an unknown, unspeakable entity from beyond the Portal. Some dragons go mad as it whispers into their minds, while others simply dream. Those with multi-gaze seem to manage contact with this outer being well, as do those with the sideways perspective of a goat, but it is far from absolute. These are the Necromancers of Plague and Paleblood, and in the name of Plague and the eldritch, unspeakable Presence from beyond the Portal, they hunt Ghouls and Lichs and all things they deem too far gone to be brought back.

Carrionix are dragons that have formed a near perfect symbiosis/mergence with a strange otherworldy organism - simply referred to as 'symbionts' - that when partnered with a dragon affords them a near limitless lifespan, additional strength and magical ability - often enough that many flights who hear of this secret come to the original site in hopes of being blessed with a bond or seek out one of the illusive Sires said to roam farther afield.

But becoming a Carrionix also provides untold and strange mutations - the most common of which being three pairs of eyes upon the dragons head (a multi-gaze partnered carrionix also sports this mutation, causing the head of the dragon to have more eyes than even a regular multi gaze)

these mutations manifest in a variety of ways and can grow and mutate to include magical effects and mutations from the dragon's own element or even elements from their lineage - it's been shown that Carrionix become notably larger and taller than their non-bonded counterparts, of course growing in danger they can present.

Until one day, they decided to attempt what most dragons would call the ultimate act of foolishness, but what they saw as the ultimate test of strength, of survival. Of devotion. They drank straight from The Wyrmwound. They weren’t prepared for what would happen next. Neither was Sornieth. While many of the attempters died, their bodies overwhelmed by the multitude of illnesses within the pestilent crater, a few, be it by strength or luck, survived, though not unscathed. The Wyrmwound transformed them, as it does to many unfortunate creatures that wander just a little too near. These “Contagions”, as they now call themselves, almost seem to imitate The Wyrmwound’s properties, their tainted flesh and blood now serving as breeding grounds for the worst Plague has to offer, constantly mutating and growing ever more virulent the longer their host survives. Now the main goal of most Contagions is to spread their pestilence far and wide, transforming the land and those who inhabit it, testing the limits of dragonkind’s, and life itself’s ability to adapt and survive. They way they do this is quite particular. When a Contagion finds a spot they deem suitable, they will “take root”, pulsating tendrils, not unlike those found near The Wyrmwound proper, sprouting from their bodies and anchoring themselves into the soil, or latching onto nearby lifeforms, to supply the Contagion with water and nutrients. These eventually become the dragon’s main source of energy, with some older individuals even losing the ability to eat. Shortly after this occurs, the Contagion starts unleashing its infectious arsenal on the local flora and fauna, leading to a large die-off in the area. Those that survive are often warped beyond recognition, both physically and psychologically. Many of them end up compulsively defending the dragon that created them, as the Contagion soon becomes unable to move. While these guards are almost essential early on, over time the Contagion’s body starts to resemble the twisted tendrils and roots native to The Scarred Wasteland, eventually becoming almost indistinguishable from them. Once the dragon reaches this stage, they become extremely difficult to remove, able to regenerate themselves from a single root or branch. If you see a tangle of fleshy vines outside of Plague territory, it’s likely one of these. It’s also likely too late to cure the blight upon the land.

Origin
Born from the crucible of the Wyrmwound, Sarcomere are a recently emerged division of Aberration dragons which have lost their scales. Be it a blessing or a curse, the roiling cesspool within the Wyrmwound dissolved these dragons’ tough exterior plating and reformed it into a transparent, durable membrane known as sarcolemma.
This is what gives them their name.

No one is sure exactly how long Sarcomere have been around, as few are seen by outside clans. However, the residents of the territories immediately surrounding the Wyrmwound have told tales for centuries of an ancient clan of dragons which were cursed to lose their scales and walk the earth with their inner rot laid bare.

Physiology and Behavior
The composition of sarcolemma, the transparent and leathery skin of the Sarcomere, appears in two primary forms. The first is particularly tough, and causes the rapid growth of structures with a distinct spine or hornlike quality. These appear primarily along the neck and chest of the dragon. Dragons which express this trait are known as the Greater Sarcomeres. The second strain of Sarcolemma is generally thinner than the first, and does not result in the formation of Fangs. This thinner skin results in remarkable translucence that extends into the dragons flesh, which allows for the entire skeleton of these dragons to be visible.

While most Sarcomeres have plague eyes, wider migration does occasionally occur which can result in a different elemental alignment of the offspring, and thus a different eye color.

Habitat and Ecology

Throughout the Scarred Wasteland, sounds can be heard of blood dripping, viscera squelching underfoot, and tooth scratching on bone. These wandering scavengers, the Boneyard Crawlers, sort through the septic refuse and seek to clean the carcasses of the hundreds of creatures that have fallen to the wretched environment, many of them Pilgrims to the Wyrmwood, who even in death honour the Plaguebringer by Feeding the Contagion.

The Plaguebringer's own pollinators, Boneyard Crawlers serve as key Vectors of Contagion, ensuring the natural mutations that slowly bubble across the undergrowth of Rot are spread far and wide, intermingle, propagate and take hold in as many unwilling hosts as possible.

Lifestyle and Social Structure

An Imperial leads the Crawlers, excavating the deepest piles and churning the bones to expose buried rotten flesh shielded from the noxious atmosphere. Having had their fill, the rest is spread out and trawled by Bogsneaks, who strip any materials or trinkets that had been buried with their former owners. What remains is picked clean by a frenzy of starving Spirals, flitting and zipping across the Boneyard, consuming both the last crumbs of flesh and carrion insects alike.

Environmental Adaptions

Immersed in filth from the day they hatch, the Boneyard Crawlers are resistant to all forms of infection, poisoning and disease, no matter how many punctures, gashes and lesions the splintered bones inflict. However, stripped of the stinking stew that coats their bleached skin and scales, they easily fall victim to cleansing rays of sunlight. Thus they shield their bodies with darkened wings when resting, and stay beneath the clouds of fetid fog and carrion insects, ensuring they are forever on the move, seeking their next meal.
