The dragons writhe in revelry at the jagged edges of the Wyrmwound's molten rot. The wails of their brethren who have already thrown themselves into the festering cauldron drift on the stale wind. Beneath the howling of the strange proceedings a deep, slithering voice thrums across the toxic waves and warped stone.

"Thou come to me of your own accord? What a delightful surprise...
So few of you dragons willingly accept the blessings I bestow upon thee.
Let us see what you are good for...

What's this?
Thou art a vain little creature.
No matter, that can be addressed.

After all, you shan't have need of those shining scales when I'm done with you."

Born from the crucible of the Wyrmwound, Sarcomere are a recently emerged division of Aberration dragons which have lost their scales. Be it a blessing or a curse, the roiling cesspool within the Wyrmwound dissolved these dragons’ tough exterior plating and reformed it into a transparent, durable membrane known as sarcolemma.
This is what gives them their name.

No one is sure exactly how long Sarcomere have been around, as few are seen by outside clans. However, the residents of the territories immediately surrounding the Wyrmwound have told tales for centuries of an ancient clan of dragons which were cursed to lose their scales and walk the earth with their inner rot laid bare.

These appear primarily along the neck and chest of the dragon. Sarcomere that have this "Fang"-like trait are sometimes known as Greater Sarcomere, since they also tend to be a bit larger (by roughly 25%) than their fangless relatives. They are slightly larger than regular Aberration dragons in general, but they do not seem to grow to the enormous size of the major individuals which appear in many other Aberration groups. It is not understood if they can't grow to gargantuan sizes because of small population sizes, or if it is the lack of physical support provided by the scales of most dragons, or some other factor. If the Sarcomere themselves know, they're not telling. Greater Sarcomere are adept physical fighters, but sometimes struggle with magic. Greater Sarcomere The second type of Sarcomere skin is thinner than the first, and does not result in the formation of Fangs. This thinner skin results in remarkable translucence that extends into the dragons flesh, which allows for the entire skeleton of these dragons to be visible. Sarcomere with this "Ghost"-like trait are sometimes called Lesser Sarcomere, and they tend to be smaller (by about 25%) than their spiny relatives. Lesser Sarcomere sizes typically align with sizes seen in standard Aberration dragons. Despite their thinner skin, Lesser Sarcomere are by no means delicate, and they are capable fighters. They may be smaller, but they are typically stronger with magic than Greater Sarcomere. Some believe that their thinner skin allows for the easier passage of resonate energy in and out of their bodies, which may let them attune more easily to the channeling of magic. Lesser Sarcomere Given their lack of scales, all Sarcomere's skin secretes an oily substance known as ichor, which helps keep them clean and protects them from abrasions and infection. This ichor acts like an external immune system, protecting the dragon from the various hazards and afflictions that dominate the Scarred Wasteland. The ichor is so effective in this purpose that it is noxious and semi-corrosive to many organic materials- including other dragons from outside the Wasteland. Ichor traps in contagions and, as the dragon travels and interacts with its surroundings and other creatures, can easily spread the corruption of the Plaguebringer through physical contact. Sarcomere shed their skins periodically. This occurs much more often in young hatchlings as they grow quickly. Shed skins are typically eaten, as this reclaims nutrients and moisture, and survival in the harsh lands of Sornieth demands that nothing be wasted. The practice of eating skins is especially important to young Sarcomere, as consuming and exposing themselves to the pathogens trapped in their ichor helps bolster their immunity to diseases. While skins are typically consumed in their entirety, sometimes scraps are left behind. These scraps will slowly poison their immediate surroundings and result in small areas of blight, growing the Plaguebringer's influence. Most Sarcomere have red eyes, a result of their innate connection to Plaguebringer and their origins within the Wyrmwound. In the centuries since their birth, few Sarcomere have left the Scarred Wastelands, but the offspring of those who do will have eye colors that reflect the elemental energies of their nest site. Depending on the dragon's control, they are either excellent or terrible machinists. - Nature aligned Sarcomere possess ichor which is particularly nutrient rich. These dragons are covered in in a variety of microorganisms, and this symbiosis provides great resistance to disease and infection. - Shadow aligned Sarcomere possess ichor which contains a compound that, when active, refracts light. This oxygen can be absorbed through the skin, which allows them to stay underwater for incredibly long periods of time. - Wind aligned Sarcomere possess ichor which is slippery and incredibly aerodynamic. It is also sensitive to wind's elemental energy and this allows them to be extremely fast and agile, particularly in flight, as they can sense and influence the wind's currents. Indeed, many clans outside of the areas immediately surrounding the Wyrmwound still consider them to be nothing more than a myth. It is likely that Sarcomere are more common than they seem, as they are very adept at remaining unseen. Their translucent flesh helps them blend in to the deposits of living rot that dominate the Wasteland, and their lack of scales allows them to move near silently. Sarcomere are generally cunning and calculating, relying on their wits over physical force whenever possible. This is likely a necessity born of their scaleless nature, as they can be more susceptible to injury than their scaled cousins if they're not careful. However, their leathery skin allows for extreme flexibility and speed, so their enemies rarely have the chance to land a solid blow against them. Sarcomere prefer to employ hit-and-retreat tactics where they dance in and out of reach of their foes, choosing their attacks carefully. Despite their cautious nature, they are utterly ferocious when pressed into combat. They are crafty and quick, and hold no qualms about tearing into an opponent with everything at their disposal. They can be ruthless, and will sometimes toy with creatures they know they can easily overpower. Their ferocity extends to other aspects of their life as well, as they are extremely defensive of their offspring. Both adults display intense care for their hatchlings, and work together to provide for them and teach them the skills required to survive. Sarcomere can also display aggression when it comes to resources, squabbling over scraps of food and ideal nesting sites. Those that choose to join other clans typically display less of this kind of nearly-animalistic behavior, as they prefer the security found in a group over the desperate survival instincts required in the Wastelands. Regardless of clan affiliation or none, to a Sarcomere, wastefulness is considered foolishness of the utmost degree. Sarcomere are resourceful and often expect others to be the same, and can become frustrated when interacting with dragons with more frivolous natures. They don't often speak unless they truly have something to say, and though they each have their own distinct personalities, Sarcomere tend to be logic oriented and blunt. The make expert strategists and planners, and are suited for a variety of occupations and tasks that require fast learning or problem solving. Most Sarcomere adhere to the timeless Aberration tradition of an annual pilgrimage to the Wyrmwound, testing themselves against the contagion brewing within. Each dragon's reasons for pursuing this journey is their own, and it has resulted in several different morphologies of Sarcomere, though only two currently retain active populations- the standard, and the Rotflesh Sarcomere. SOCIAL Sarcomere are reclusive dragons, and tend to favor solitude or smaller clan life. Rarely do they venture out of the shadows to engage with other dragons, but some have found comfortable lives in clans outside of the Wastelands. Sarcomere that choose to join clans will often stalk prospective groups for weeks before making themselves known, both heads debating whether or not the clan is a good fit for them. If the clan seems promising, the Sarcomere will integrate themselves slowly and carefully. They retain the Aberration preference to live in pairs, and will bond fiercely with a chosen friend or mate. Courtship amongst Sarcomere varies in its complexity. Some pairs shower their partners with gifts of trinkets and food, some perform noisy or flamboyant dances, while other spend hours quietly murmuring to each other with their necks entwined. Displays and gifts are standard, but the frequency and intensity of these affections depends largely on the personality of the individuals involved. Both males and females will instigate courtships. Their secretive and mistrustful nature causes most Sarcomere to pair for life, but some individuals take multiple partners over their lifetime. When nesting, Sarcomere often become aggressive towards dragons that are not their chosen partner. The nest is usually hidden away from the main group, and to accidently stumble upon one typically results in violence for the unfortunate passerby. Both parents take turn caring for the eggs, and once they hatch, caring for the offspring. The hatchlings do not leave the safety of the nest until their two minds have settled into rhythm with each other, which typically takes several weeks. Once their minds have learned how to work together enough to reliably navigate fine motor skills and communication, the hatchlings will leave the nest and be taught the necessities of survival. Young Sarcomere stay with their parents until they are old enough to be considered capable and self-sufficient, and then they typically leave to seek out territory elsewhere. It is rare to find more than two Sarcomere in any given territory or clan. Sarcomere often remain on the fringes of society, as they are ancient creatures and retail a more bestial nature than many modern breeds. They may find it difficult to integrate into many clans, particularly large ones. Despite their struggles connecting with dragons of other breeds, Sarcomere often enjoy the company of familiars. The ichor that coats a Sarcomere's skin makes wearing clothing uncomfortable, and will slowly dissolve textiles with prolonged contact. Despite their general aversion to apparel, many Sarcomere still enjoy dressing up, and adorn themselves with skins and accents.

ELEMENTAL ALIGNMENTS

Sarcomere with elemental alignments outside of Plague cannot spread disease and rot like those born to the Scarred Wasteland. However, the ichor produced by their skin is mutable and will interact with other elemental energies in a similar manner.

- Arcane aligned Sarcomere possess ichor which binds residual magical energy drawn from the environment, which provides a stronger capability for performing magic, and a greater defense against it.

- Earth aligned Sarcomere possess ichor which contains tiny crystal-like structures. These structures, while clear, are incredibly dense and offer protection against harsh or corrosive environments. The extra weight of these crystals results in dragons which are physically very strong.

- Fire aligned Sarcomere posses ichor which is highly flammable, and can set themselves on fire at will without causing injury to themselves for entertainment or combat purposes.

SOCIAL

Sarcomere are reclusive dragons, and tend to favor solitude or smaller clan life.

Their secretive and mistrustful nature causes most Sarcomere to pair for life, but some individuals take multiple
partners over their lifetime.

It is rare to find more than two Sarcomere
in any given territory or clan.

This excess of coagulation is caused by a particular bloodborne pathogen generated by the Rotflesh's bodies. The Rotflesh themselves are immune to its deadly effects, but the pathogen is transferable if another creature comes into contact with their blood. This makes them extremely dangerous in physical combat, as the pathogen is fast acting and deadly. If another creature is infected, they typically succumb within hours, as their bodies cannot handle the rapid thickening of their blood. This then starts a chain reaction, as the contagion can spread even further- infecting scavengers that feed on the carcass and any plant life in the immediate area surrounding it. Any creature that feeds on a plant that has grown in the area of a Rotflesh victim will likewise become infected, and if scavengers are consumed as prey items by other dragons before they have succumbed to the Rotflesh pathogen, the cycle of infection continues. To prevent potential epidemics, the carcasses of creatures and vegetation infected with Rotflesh must be burned. In stark contrast to the horrors it inflicts upon other creatures, Rotflesh Sarcomere themselves appear to have been made even stronger by this infection. It does nothing to hinder their vitality or mobility, and it is such an aggressive pathogen that it often destroys other infections, causing the Rotflesh to be practically immune to most other diseases. The coagulation of their blood is also an advantage in combat, as their wounds clot over almost immediately, preventing bloodloss. Since Sarcomere ichor is largely derived from components also found in their blood, Rotflesh ichor is also infectious. ORIGIN

Rotflesh Sarcomere are thought to have originated when several Sarcomere, on their annual pilgrimage to the Wyrmwound, threw themselves into the contagion while bearing open wounds. The infection drove deep within their bodies, twisting their very essence and resulting in a perpetual state of coagulation within their bloodstream.

Many outsiders consider it a miracle that they're even alive, what with the perpetual diseased state of their innards. Indeed, their very blood is toxic. To the faithful, they are considered true acolytes of the Plaguebringer, walking testaments of the strength which can be provided by accepting her gifts.

PHYSIOLOGY

While physically alike to their brethren, Rotflesh Sarcomere posses a unique and deadly compound within their blood. This gives them perpetual appearance of inner rot, and thus their name.

OnqaCgS.png

Rotflesh Sarcomere are, for the most part, physiologically similar to their standard relatives. The primary difference, is that Rotflesh Sarcomere have a high concentration of a chemical which causes coagulation in their blood. This slows their bloodflow, causing it to fester within their bodies and giving them an appearance of perpetual rot. Since Sarcomere ichor is largely derived from components also found in their blood, Rotflesh ichor is also infectious. It retains the potential for spreading contagion despite the elemental alignment of the dragon.

BEHAVIOR

While their base behavior is the same, Rotflesh Sarcomere are uniquely suited for physical violence, and take steps to put themselves in scenarios where their opponents are open to infection.

rotbeb.pngrot4.png

While primarily similar in behavior to their relatives, Rotflesh Sarcomere are more physically aggressive in combat, and are not as prone to defending their bodily safety.
