Great Whites
Breed: Any modern
Eyes: Any
Primary: Smoke - Coal Iridescent
Secondary: Smoke - Coal Shimmer
Tertiary: White Underbelly
Lore: Many of the most legendary Shark warriors and leaders, past and present, are Great Whites. Their skill in combat is unrivaled: watching one of these Sharks fight is terrifying, awe-inspiring and humbling all at once. They are the greatest, in their own eyes, and many are inclined to agree. The variant has a tendency to let this go to their heads, and many are quite arrogant as a result. Great Whites are typically the worst when it comes to picking on weaker Sharks and dragons alike. They are often perfectionistic, holding both themselves and others to very high standards.
Blues
Breed: Any modern
Eyes: Any
Primary: Sapphire - Blue Iridescent
Secondary: Sapphire - Blue Shimmer
Tertiary: White or Moon Underbelly
Lore: A very envious group of Sharks, Blues are renowned for their speed, agility and ferocity in combat. Despite many being respected leaders, the breed as a whole is extremely jealous of others, particularly the larger breeds. With their agility it is easy for them to overwhelm many of these larger, slower sharks despite the giants’ greater strength, however their envy and fiery temper often lead to them making irrational, impulsive decisions - their greatest weakness. The variant’s ferocity is not limited to the heat of battle. Many will do almost anything to gain power and recognition, with some of their tactics earning them disdain from other Sharks. When a Blue gains a position of power in a way that other Sharks consider unfair or cowardly, they will often be met with resistance and constant challenges for their position.
White-tips
Breed: Any modern
Eyes: Any
Primary: Smoke - Coal, Beige - Latte Iridescent
Secondary: Smoke - Coal, Beige - Latte Shimmer
Tertiary: White Okapi, Points
Lore: White-tips have a long-standing rivalry with Black-tips. Nobody can quite remember what started the animosity between the variants, but it is widely believed to have its genesis in the two groups differing viewpoints on magic, reflected in the different ways each chooses to use their magical talents. Unlike the Threshers, White-tips can have any elemental magic, though their abilities are nearly almost focused on defensive, supportive magics of their birth element. Thus they typically take on a supportive role in battle, buffing their allies and shielding them from magical harm. This variant is seen as an invaluable resource by Shark clans fighting magic-wielders.
Black-tips
Breed: Any modern
Eyes: Any
Primary: Smoke - Coal, Beige - Latte Iridescent
Secondary: Smoke - Coal, Beige - Latte Shimmer
Tertiary: Oilslick - Eldritch Okapi, Points
Lore: Black-tips have a long-standing rivalry with White-tips. Nobody can quite remember what started the animosity between the variants, but it is widely believed to have its genesis in the two groups differing viewpoints on magic, reflected in the different ways each chooses to use their magical talents. Unlike the Threshers, Black-tips can have any elemental magic, usually specializing in offensive magic of their birth element. These Sharks typically take a more active role in battle compared to their White-tip brethren. While some stay far back from the frontlines and hurl magical projectiles at their opponents, most Black-tips prefer to use their magic to augment their physical strength, shrouding their claws and teeth in destructive energies before tearing into their enemy.
Piebalds
Breed: Any modern
Eyes: Any
Primary: Smoke - Coal, Beige - Latte Iridescent
Secondary: Smoke - Coal, Beige - Latte Shimmer
Tertiary: Orca Okapi
Lore: A vanishingly rare variant, the hybrid offspring of White-tip and Black-tip Sharks. Like their parent breeds they are magic users. Unlike their parent breeds, Piebalds do not occupy any particular niche, magically or otherwise. They are often jacks of all trades, taking on whatever role happens to be available at the time. They are often bullied in Shark clans containing a large number of Black and/or White-tip Sharks, but some see them as a sign of changing times, perhaps heralding a new era of peace between the traditionally hostile variants.
Tigers
Breed: Any modern
Eyes: Any
Primary: Smoke - Coal, Tiger, Falcon
Secondary: Smoke - Coal, Stripes, Peregrine
Tertiary: White - Maize Underbelly
Lore: Tiger Sharks often prefer to conserve their energy, both in and outside of battle. They often scavenge instead of actively hunting and chasing down prey. Other Shark breeds typically perceive them as lazy, but their slow and steady approach to life, and particularly combat often leaves them as the last ones standing after others have given up or retreated due to fatigue. Their bite strength is unmatched by any other, their jaws crushing armour and bone with ease.
Goblins
Breed: Ridgebacks only
Eyes: Any
Primary: Platinum - Shale Iridescent
Secondary: Platinum - Shale Shimmer
Tertiary: Mauve - Bubblegum Stained
Lore: Goblin sharks often find themselves at the bottom of the pile, ostracized by both other Sharks and dragons for their grotesque appearance and fragile skin. They are often relatively poor fighters and tend to value intelligence over strength. They thus rely heavily on traps to deal with enemies, which further distances them from other Shark breeds and can create tension between them and other variants. They are typically the engineers and scientists of Shark society, those who don’t become priests anyway, as their tendency to dwell in the sea’s depths makes them surprisingly well-suited for the job.
Cookie Cutters
Breed: Faes and Spirals only
Eyes: Any
Primary: Ginger - Auburn Iridescent
Secondary: Ginger - Auburn Shimmer
Tertiary: Hickory - Rust Capsule, Underbelly
Lore: Cookie Cutters are the smallest and weakest of the Sharks. This doesn’t seem to faze them, as they are one of the most vicious. When they fight, they often attempt to target their foes weak-points, while expertly dodging attacks. The more level-headed ones are occasionally hired as spies. Like Lanterns they possess bioluminescence, which they use to communicate with each other wordlessly.
Leopards
Breeds: Any modern
Eyes: Any
Primary: Sand - Dirt Bar
Secondary: Sand - Dirt Daub
Tertiary: Maize - White Underbelly
Lore: Many Leopard Sharks have an interest in medicine, often becoming doctors, although “combat medic” may be a better term. Many of them also become priests. They are often less inclined to fight than most of their brethren, but when they do, they usually ambush their opponents, using the patterns on their scales to blend into the environment. You often won't see a leopard Shark until it's too late.
Whales
Breeds: Guardians, Ridgebacks, Snappers, Obelisks and Imperials only
Eyes: Any
Primary: Grey - Shale, Clown, Jaguar
Secondary: Grey - Shale, Eye Spots, Rosette
Tertiary: White Underbelly
Lore: The largest of all Sharks, one may expect them to be the most violent, but that simply isn’t the case. Whale Sharks are a peaceful and nomadic variant, content in minding their own affairs rather than getting involved with the rest of Shark society. They are wanderers by nature, and it's common to see them traveling to different lands and inviting dragons to talk before moving on to another location. They will fight if necessary to protect themselves and sometimes others from threats. Their massive size frequently intimidates even the most aggressive Sharks, as they loom over all the other variants, allowing them to maintain their usually peaceful existence. Older individuals often serve as historians and storytellers who are more than happy to recount their experiences, assuming one can find them.
Lanterns
Breeds: Any modern (preferably smaller breeds)
Eyes: Any
Primary: Oilslick - Midnight, Iridescent, Starmap
Secondary: Oilslick - Midnight, Shimmer, Constellation
Tertiary: Cerulean - Aqua, Radioactive, Leaf, Underbelly, Glimmer, Opal, Contour, Smoke, Firefly, Firebreather, Lace and Runes.
Lore: Lantern Sharks have full control over the bioluminescent markings covering their bodies, and often use them to guide other dragons to safety or deeper into danger, and to communicate with other Lanterns. Lantern sharks residing in the Sea of a Thousand Currents generally stay in the Leviathan Trench during the day, only surfacing at night. On land they will seek out dark caves to hide in until sunset. Many of these Sharks are terrified of fighting, and when confronted with a threat, will extinguish their markings and flee into the darkness. When they must fight, groups of them will often swarm their attacker, biting and clawing as they attempt to force the opponent to retreat. They make good priests due to their habit of sticking to deeper waters, so many of these dragons command more respect than would be expected in Shark society. On the rare occasions one of these Sharks attempts to gain power without becoming a priest, it is usually via spying on, and attempting to sabotage their rivals.
Granite Threshers
Breeds: Any modern
Eyes: Any
Primary: Taupe - Latte Giraffe, Ground
Secondary: Taupe - Latte Hex, Fissure
Tertiary: Taupe - Latte Scales or Cantaloupe - Fire, Runes, Smirch, Firebreather and Opal (Bronze and Orange opal not recommended)
Lore: Granite Threshers are powerful magic users, a rare occurrence in most other Sharks. Their bodies are covered in thick stone plates, sacrificing agility for defense. Due to this, they are often hired as bodyguards. In combat they will blast their opponents with jets of boiling water, or magical fireballs if on land. Their fiery abilities are augmented by their elemental affinity. Their tails can be used as whips to stun both prey and enemies. Many like to cloak themselves in flames and tackle their enemies.
Shale Threshers
Breeds: Any modern
Eyes: Any
Primary: Gloom - Shale Giraffe, Ground
Secondary: Gloom - Shale Hex, Fissure
Tertiary: Gloom - Shale Scales or Cerulean - Aqua, Runes, Opal, Smirch, Firebreather
Lore: While Shale Threshers are sometimes used as bodyguards like their granite brethren, they are more often used as living batteries, owing to their affinity for Lightning magic. Despite their usefulness to Shark settlements they're often outcasts also owing mainly to their magic. Apart from the stigma surrounding magic users in some Shark societies, the fear of accidental electrocution is quite pronounced. Many of these Sharks spend a lot of time on land due to this fear. This often leads to them developing relationships with dragon clans, and can land them jobs as ambassadors to dragonkind. In combat Shale Threshers will usually stun their opponents with powerful blasts of electricity, before moving in for the kill. They use their tails as whips to stun prey and enemies. Their shocking abilities are augmented by their elemental affinity.
