Biography

Rigel and his two younger brothers hatched during the light holiday when the hatchery was filled with hatchlings. The spiral brothers got along nicely, they felt like brothers to each other, but despite of that they were rather distant. They all spent way more time with other hatchlings than they did with each other. Rigel ended up befriending Starfall, one of the four nocturne brothers, as they both felt inspired by stories about brave warriors who put their lives on line to protect others, or to get glory.

At young age Rigel had a bad habit of speaking before thinking, and he often said something mean. He didn’t mean to offend others, he was just fast to bite back when someone called him a shattered serpent, usually the pearlcatcher twins Hougen and Genba. Starfall was rather bothered by that. He had very strong need to mimic everyone to the point that he felt he couldn’t really be himself. Rigel struggled to see that from his friend’s side and told him to fight back the breed’s limitation. He had to do the same with his long, borderline unfit for walking body.

After leaving the hatchery Rigel wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to do. Warrior sounded like a fun and glorious job but with how peaceful the clan was it could get boring. Instead he decided to focus on hunting, it was almost the same thing and he got to see more interesting places during clan’s nightly gatherings. It was fun at first but soon enough it started to feel monotonous, just find a prey, ambush it and kill it. There was no point with battling some dangerous beasts if he found some because the hunting rarely happened near home thanks to the boomerang gate, and his hunting buddies scolded him when he tried to battle one for fun. Rigel started wonder if he should get another job and do hunting whenever he wanted something simple. Starfall, who was seriously thinking about breed change, suggested him to take his time but being patient was not Rigel’s strong suits. He wanted to find his place now and not tomorrow.

Since leaving the hatchery all of the hatchlings had been looking for what they wanted in life, including Hougen and Genba. Unlike their coevals they wanted some easy money and thus they had planned to kidnap Richard. Rigel had heard the poet had a bounty on his head and the pearlcatcher twins had thought about selling him for some easy cash. Naturally the clan did not accept that and since the twins showed no remorse, in fact they openly talked about trying again, the clan decided to exile them. They left willingly but their brother Sulevi was sure they would try again and feared what they might do that time. They had killed their youngest brother Ooze after he had spotted them plotting, the act that had spoiled their plan before it had even started.

Rigel also knew the twins would totally try again, and like Sulevi he feared they really could do even worse. That was the motivation Rigel needed and he went to meet Rubikin, a fellow spiral and master warrior. The Red Viper wasn’t thrilled to have an apprentice, for some reason, but he accepted Rigel’s request and started to teach him how to use sword. Using a long blade when standing was challenging and flying with the weapon was hard but Rigel was determined to fight the problems to learn the ways of the sword. He would one night be as good as the old warrior and he could be able to defend the clan with outstanding skills.

Things remained peaceful in the clan until Dustin went missing. He was Rigel’s brother and worried that the twins had gotten him he decided to go look for him. It was reckless to go into the surrounding wood without a plan but Rigel did not care. If he encountered a danger, he could make one on the spot, and he had a sword. Thanks to his experience with hunting Rigel was able to find Dustin’s trail easily and he started to follow it. While he was doing that he ended up encountering Tahna, clan’s plague ambassador and ranger. The old wildclaw asked to where Rigel had such a rush and after the spiral answered the wildclaw invited him to join him as he too was looking for Dustin.

Rigel feared the ranger would slow him down and declined the offer. Tahna told that while it was important to hurry, in case something had happened to the younger spiral, it was also important to not be hasty. Rigel had no time to listen to the lecture and he flied away. He kept following the trail barely hearing the forest underneath the clanging of his light armor. That left him open for an ambush and Akakabuto noticed that. The corrupt gaoler managed to pinch Rigel against the ground and while the armor protected him fatal injuries he was in no position to fight back.

Before things turned bad for Rigel Tahna ran to rescue him and the gaoler retreated after he noticed being outmatched by the wildclaw. The ranger repeated what he had said about not rushing as Rigel got back up feeling a bit embarrassed. The spiral decided to tag along with the more experienced dragon as they continued the search and eventually they both smelled blood. Rigel rushed ahead and his heart sank when he saw Dustin’s lifeless body on the ground. Tahna checked it and concluded Akakabuto had killed him.

Rigel felt furious as he looked down to his dead brother. He pulled out his sword and attempted to fly after the gaoler but Tahna pushed him against the ground before he got far. The otherwise calm wildclaw was clearly angry when he scolded the younger dragon. He understood that he was angry but also told that risking his life would be beyond stupid. It would not bring Dustin back, if anything it would just get Rigel killed and Dustin didn’t need his brother to escort him to the afterlife, the clan had a guardian spirit just for that job. The plague dragon told Rigel to survive tonight to keep living and keep winning for the future and those who were not here to see that. After the speech Tahna let Rigel go and asked him to help carry the body to the lair.

Dustin’s body was burned the following night and as the flames ate the physical remains Rigel thought about what Tahna had said. The words echoed in his head making sleeping difficult and he woke up way too early for his liking. He did not like it but he could not say it was a bad thing considering Hougen and Genba sneaked back into the lair during the day after the memorial ceremony. They had bypassed clan’s security by using the gate in clan’s starwood lair and the three residents in the old lair had not been able to stop the two ruthless dragons. That angered Rigel quite a lot, mainly because his mother lived in the starwood lair, and being both tired and still processing loss of his brother, which the twins dared to laugh at, he turned his blade towards the twins.

Being tired and alone against two bigger dragons Rigel was not able to win the twins but he was able to make up enough noise to wake up others. They came to handle the situation and Rigel watched how calm the older dragons were able to remain despite being provoked. The twins were kicked out again, Rigel was patched up with the residents of the starwood lair and Starfall came to talk about his future. The incident had made the nocturne, and the clan, realize that the old lair had no guard and while the trivia lock helped to keep outsiders outside it didn’t work against ex-members. The nocturne thought about turning into an obelisk so he could help protect the old lair and he asked if Rigel could be the one to do the breed change once he got the scroll. Rigel was tired and just said he’d think about it.

Things were not calming down in the clan as Sleight, Rigel’s youngest brother, was killed by a new spirit Marie the following night. Rigel could not let that fly and he picked his sword to make the spirit pay. He was able to locate her easily and he was fast to spot a massive hole in his hasty plan, though not fast enough. Marie too noticed the plot hole, that Rigel could not kill someone who was already dead, and scolded the spiral for his hasty plan without any emotions. Rigel was annoyed by that and attempted to attack anyway. That did not go as planned and he noticed his arm and its membrane were broken before he even had time to react.

Despite of the broken arm Rigel still tried to attack but that just ended with more broken wings. Marie seemed like an elder but she moved incredibly fast and her hits were accurate. She had clear upper hand and Rigel soon noticed he was pressed against the ground, again. Marie mentioned something about Rigel’s young age and will to die, he was not able to tell if she was mocking or disappointed. Her claws were on his throat and realizing she could kill him at any second fear started to dwell in him. He wanted to avenge his brothers but he did not want to die, he wanted to live because his brothers could not. Marie noticed that and seemed to pity the young dragon. Before she gave the final hit another spirit, Lumi, came to help him. Marie’s attention changed from Rigel to her and the gaoler asked him to run once he was let go. He crawled away as fast as he could to avoid being crushed by the vicious battle between two spirits.

Rigel had been found by Julius who helped the hurt spiral to the healing offices. Things there, and in the clan as a whole, were surprisingly chaotic and Rigel soon heard why. Someone had brought Sleight back to life while Rigel had been away but then Lifeblood’s familiar, presumably the envoy of one of clan’s guardians, had driven the revived dragon away. Rigel was not sure what was more chocking, that someone had played god and brought a dead back to life or that clan’s guardian had reacted so negatively. As he lied in the healing offices he had time to think about that and ultimately he came to conclusion that they were both wrong. Sleight was clearly lost mentally after being brought back and being driven out of the lair he had become a threat to its residents now that he was left without support. Rigel could not figure out how to help him but he knew he could help keep the clan safe, and he would do so as long as he could in order to live for both of his lost brothers.

Rigel was able to recover well thanks to good treatment but the injuries had gotten him thinking. As a spiral he was first of all rather small and secondly his six wings were a clear weak spot. They could be healed but he was not sure if he wanted to risk living with such a massive handicap, considering his plan was to defend the clan from threats that did not fight by the rules. He returned to think about Starfall and his plan of changing the breed. After giving it some thought he decided to do the same, just with a different breed.

After obtaining the scroll he went to talk with the nocturne asking if he still needed help. He still did and Rigel promised to help him if he helped him in turn. Starfall was surprised to hear Rigel had decided to change breed as well, considering he had been against the idea until then. Rigel explained that he had re-evaluated his stand and come to conclusion he needed to change breed. The two changed their breeds and promised to keep the clan safe, Starfall from starwood lair and Rigel in the main lair. No one would hurt the other residents as long as they were able to stand.

Traits

Rigel is an arcane mirror with spotted body and wings. His main body is black while his wings are dark grey. Around his body he has white pattern mimicking his skeleton. He was originally a spiral and as a reminder of that the crests on his arms are slightly bigger than normal while the crests on his head turn clearly downwards near the tip. They also don’t move as freely as they would on natural mirror. He also has small crests on his hindlegs. His eyes are slightly bigger than normal and have common pink coloration.

Rigel is a warrior always ready for a battle and he is dressed up quite simply because of that. He wears white armor with purple highlights and eye-like gems the set including a helmet, belt, breastplate, boots, gauntlets, tail and wing cover. The armor set is flexible and allows Rigel use his agility to overwhelm his opponents. Combined with the white skeleton markings on his body it can also be difficult for the opponent to see what parts are covered and what are not and Rigel often tries to use that to confuse his enemy. His weapon of choice, a white katana, hangs from his hip.

At younger age Rigel was very direct, borderline rude in his speech but he has calmed down a bit since. He can still be a bit direct but more often than not he tries to remain calm when speaking and does his best to be both polite and rational. He has strong Japanese accent.

At younger age Rigel was rather impatient and a bit rude dragon who rarely thought before acting. However, he was never malicious and after maturing a little, and having few too many close encounters, he has calmed down and nowadays he is way more patient and polite. He used to look up to knights, warriors and others who kept weaker ones safe and he has let himself be influenced by the residents who fill that role. Most of them are calm, rational and understanding and he has done his best to become like that. He has even grown interested about diplomacy as he has seen them solve problems, big and small, by talking and thinking them through. He still lacks experience but he learns from others and he is quite confident in his intuition while also understanding that he might miss his mark. He won’t let bad decisions hold him down, he will learn from them and he will do better in the future which he wants to help build.

Rigel considers family and friends important, and to him the clan is basically his extended family. When practicing his fighting skills, he is often alone but outside that he is often seen walking among other residents keeping guard, helping with disputes or just chatting with others. Originally he was a bit direct with his opinions and he believed dragons should fight against their limitations, physical or mental. However, his stand has changed on that front, mainly because he considered breed change the best option for himself, and in general he is much more understanding towards others. He is a good listener and is able to give great feedback on many topics which makes him quite liked company. He loves his family greatly and is ready to defend them no matter what, partly because he has lost both of his biological brothers and doesn’t want anyone experience the same loss as he.

Rigel is accompanied by two owlcat half-brothers who decided to join him during his first Warrior’s Way event. Bloodwing owlcat Orion and warblade owlcat Sirius both speak fluent Dragonian and get along with their dragon company well. Interestingly they don’t get along with each other that well they often having opposing views, and Rigel is the one who has to solve their disputes. Orion is very rash and acts impulsively, usually rather violently, while Sirius prefers more peaceful and diplomatic approach being almost pacifistic. Though solving the disputes can get tiresome for Rigel he cares about the brothers them being almost like brothers to him. The owlcats feel almost the same way seeing Rigel as the in-between piece between themselves. When not arguing the three enjoy practice battles and stargazing.

Rigel was never particularly good with magic. He tried to learn the basic spells but never got that far and thus he is rarely if ever seen casting spells, though interestingly he is rather good with naming stars and constellations for someone not studying the canvas above. Where Rigel’s skills really shine are more practical things, fighting and dispute solving. He understands situations well which helps him find solutions that please all parties. He is also great at paying attention which is helpful in battle situations as well. As a warrior Rigel’s fighting style is mostly about moving fast, dodging and striking with his sword. Having originally been of a smaller breed being offensive was not viable for him and such he learned to be especially good with countering attacks from his opponents. He though knows how to be offensive as well. He knows what his strengths are and he knows how to use them. He is also good at spotting weaknesses on his opponent and knows how to use them to get the upper hand.
