Biography

Tempest was the youngest of her litter having two older siblings. Vengel was a bit of a jerk and Megan was always tired but she loved her older little siblings and enjoyed helping Megan with everything. They listened their hatchling-sitter tell them stories Tempest’s favorite being the origin story of their Great Father, Arcanist. She was fascinated by how science could create something so great and started to dream about doing something similar.

Tempest started to study the science that had brought Arcanist to life, or at least tried as the information was hard to find and her clan mates tried to hide the little she was able to find. They warned her that trying to replicate the event that ended the Second Age would in worst case end the era of dragons but Tempest was so excited about science that she totally ignored the warnings. To satisfy her curiosity Tempest turned to Parcha, clan’s only lightning dragon who knew a lot about science his flight did.

He told what they could do with science and Tempest grew more and more excited about lightning’s science eventually starting to worship Stormcatcher in place of the Arcanist. She felt science was better than magic and started to work to be able to use and make it herself but she ran into a problem when trying to make the machines work. The machines used electricity to work but she had no access to that as she lived in arcane territory where lightning storms were rare and her ways to create electricity were limited. She could have moved to the Shifting Expanse but she could not spread the greatness of the lightning deity from there. She had to find way to turn arcane magic into electricity and she dragged Parcha to help her.

They were doing some research and planning before they started testing their hypotheses and after the clan moved to the Focal Point Tempest and Parcha having grown close build a workshop to do their tests in. They though didn’t go as smoothly as the two had hoped and if Tempest being always too excited didn’t accidentally broke the machine then the magic did that often causing an explosion. The two were rarely if ever hurt by those but the machines weren’t as lucky and Tempest felt she occasionally spent more time asking for new parts from Tapio than doing testing.

Months passed by and the science duo was able to create some electricity by using windmill but the winds in arcane domain were weak with trees not helping with that and they were barely able to generate power to alight the workshop let alone power up their more advanced machines. Parcha was starting to think that the arcane magic and lightning machinery didn’t match and suggested they’d start experimenting with something else. Tempest though was sure they would succeed and demanded they kept going which they did.

Few weeks later they were adjusting their newest prototype generator that was supposed to turn arcane energy into something their machines could use like tens of previous prototypes. Tempest was optimistic like always while Parcha was expecting the same result they had gotten way too many times. They had changed the formula and Tempest was sure they would succeed this time showing off their success as she turned on the generator. It took her few seconds to realize the machine had not exploded like they always did and it, in fact, seemed to work this time.

Both Dragons were silent when Tempest connected the generator with one of their machines meant to be used to make others expecting it to blow to their face. They waited whole minute the machine booting as the generator gave it energy. Upon realizing they had finally cracked the code Tempest lifted Parcha up celebrating that they had finally done it. Parcha asked to be put back down and after they turned off the machines they broke the generator apart to build the full model to power up their whole workshop Tempest being excited to finally be able to start doing real science.

Small pile of pink petals.

After getting her generator working Tempest started to brainstorm what she could do. Knowing Megan was unable to fly she thought about devices that could help dragons with things they could not do normally, like diving very deep, surviving intense heat, teleporting, flying and so on. When they eventually reached Brightshine Jubilee she had many prototypes few working better than others.

After the jubilee was over Tempest realized Thundercrack Carnivale was less than month away and she started to prepare for that. She cleaned the workshop and got one of her prototypes working correctly it being plate curver. When the carnivale was just week away Parcha suggested they’d get to the heart of the celebration and Tempest being more than excited carried Parcha all the way to the Expanse.

Tempest enjoyed her time in the lightning domain and was very unwilling to leave the two arriving back home almost two weeks after the party was over because of that. Back in their workshop Tempest started to work to make an actual product out of her plate curver. Working with it Tempest totally missed the fire holiday and gift from the Flamecaller: an egg the clan was planning to hatch after the holiday ended. Tempest heard that from Parcha and was confused why he told her that she having very minimal interest towards fire. She almost broke her machines as she rushed out of the workshop after he explained that the clan had saved a lightning egg during the carnivale and planned to hatch it with the fire egg.

Tempest made her way to the hatchery were the eggs were being showed and almost cried upon seeing the sparkling beauty that was the lightning egg. The egg had not been hatched yet but Tempest was more than willing to adopt the lightning dragon. She ignored Afrodite, a lightning dragon ignoring her element’s grace, who noted that the hatchling might not care about science. Science was part of lightning dragons’ nature like magic was arcane dragons’ and Tempest wanted to teach the young spark all the great things science allowed.

The egg was hatched and Tempest felt her heart melting as she looked at the young nocturne naming him Virgil after an AI she remembered from one story she had heard. No one opposed when she and Parcha took the nocturne and carried him to their workshop to rise him as their actual child. At the young age he was already good with their machines and often fixed them Tempest being too easily distracted and Parcha having clumsy fingers to do that. He clearly enjoyed fixing and maintaining machines more than creating new ones and Parcha took the job to teach him all about that.

Tempest dove back into her work feeling proud when Virgil came to help and showed great understanding of science. One night the trio decided to take a break and went to see the clan it being oddly tense. Tempest would have normally ignored that but this time she was trying to recharge and the atmosphere wasn’t helping with that. Curious of what was going on she made her way towards the healing offices guessing she would find answers in here and happened to hear Kanerva and Malvadust talk about Storm having to learn live without arms.

Tempest didn’t know why they were talking about that but suggested artificial arms for Storm anyway. That caught the healers off guard and they didn’t seem to have understood what she had said. She repeated that they could make new arms and took a closer look at Storm whose arms were not looking like they should have. The healers didn’t seem to support her idea rather having the spiral loose her arms than deal with risks with ”lightning junk” as they put it. Tempest ignored the insult of the two space-headed arcane dragons and asked why they wouldn't make new arms when they could. As they were arguing Tempest wondering if she should be offended Strom woke up and showed her support to Tempest. She argued with her mother until she gave up and Tempest happy to have chance to test her skills left to tell her coworkers.

Parcha did not share Tempest’s excitement being worried of how arcane would react with science. Tempest on the other hand thought that was the reason they needed to try, to see how they would react. Virgil was with Tempest and Parcha gave in making sure that if something went wrong they would take the blame instead of leaving it to Malvadust. They made blueprints Virgil getting them Storm’s measurements and started working using the same technology they used in their generator to make the prosthesis. Thanks to Parcha being a snapper they were able to finish the arms way faster than they assumed and as Virgil flew to inform healers Tempest prepared to attach the new arms to a dragon.

Tempest took the arms to the healers moving Storm having been out of question from a very start. Kanerva and Parcha joined Tempest with the operation Kanerva maintaining Storm’s state and helping with organic and artificial making contact while Parcha monitored the arms making sure they didn’t have malfunctions. The situation was very different from what Tempest had used to do and she noticed being slightly stressed hoping she could hold her attention to finish the task at hand. The arms were eventually, after many hours, attached without setbacks and Tempest feeling drained took a rest Parcha promising to take the job if need to be while Virgil took the job to check the arms regularly.

Storm ended up surviving and even learned to use her new arms. Tempest was almost overwhelmed by the successful experiment and was fully charged to do more. She went through her prototypes and blueprints trying to decide what they should finish next. She had already had at least two successful products and she was willing to see how great creations she would end up making with science.

Small pile of pink petals.

After making Storm’s arms Tempest encountered her greatest enemy, her own attention span, again. She had so many projects and she just couldn’t focus on one causing them all to stall. Parcha and Virgil spent their time fixing and improving their previous works neither of them being helpful for Tempest’s insane ideas.

One night Tempest was testing one of Parcha’s prototypes he had done for fun, a launcher using air pressure, when they got visitors. At the door Tempest found Astral who she considered to be one of the last dragons to visit her, right after Nova. She was with Luna and Theia who was Tempest’s actual daughter and seeing all three together at her door made her and Parcha curious.

Mage, ”cursed” coatl and geologist entered the building and Theia didn’t hesitate as she told she wanted to fly to a moon. Tempest was both excited and confused by that not seeing why the mage sisters would be with her she being confident enough to say that even without them. The younger dragons seemed to realize that and explained that Luna had found Theia planning moon flight and told about that to Astral who had access to books about space. They said it was possible for dragon to survive on moon with right spells but getting there was a problem which was why they had come to meet. They needed a rocket.

Tempest was happy for her daughter’s ambition and mages’ realization they needed the almighty science. She was ready to start designing and building a rocket but Parcha held her back pointing out that they would need acceptance of the rest of the clan to launch it. They informed leaders about that and it was brought up in the following conference. They got the permission thanks to Theia’s stubbornness and Tempest and Parcha started working with the rocket as Astral helped them with understanding conditions up there.

When Tempest and Parcha were testing with the technology they were planning to use to get the rocket out of the ground accidentally blowing it up they got visitors. Virgil let them in and they told they were looking for Tempest. She came to meet them as soon as possible starting to fangirl when she realized they had arrived from the Expanse. Parcha had to remind her to behave and the guest handed Tempest a letter. She read it once and twice having hard time realizing what the letter actually said. Parcha noticing her sudden confusion asked what was wrong and Tempest could barely stay still as she told him they had been invited to the Tempest Spire.

The letter only mentioned Tempest but both agreed Parcha should come with her to make sure she remembered to behave. Parcha was a bit nervous of why they had been invited at to the heart of the lightning domain while Tempest was more excited than what she could handle. She wanted to explore the massive factory upon entering it but they were meant to meet someone. They did not waste any time with introductions or meaningless chit chat and went straight to the point. They had heard about Tempest’s dedication for science and asked if she’d become their clan’s lightning ambassador.

Tempest shook so much that she was sure she made the ground shake too as she screamed internally. She could not say anything and just nodded her head as the representative of the Stormcatcher repeated their question wondering how it did not fall off. She got the symbols and hold herself till she and Parcha had walked some distance away from the Spire before releasing her joy. She was still shaking as they arrived home not quite being able to comprehend she had been noticed by the Great Father. She was twice as motivated to work after that wanting to show her promotion was not wasted.

Tempest worked with the rocket getting the launch technology working followed by other functions of the rocket. After that was making the rocket itself and the place from where it would be launched. It took about five months but eventually it was ready Theia being ready to leave the Sornieth. Tempest and Theia had never been that close but they shared a hug as she entered the rocket Tempest tearing up as she took off probably never to be seen again by her clan mates even when the rocket was build to be able to return.

Tempest continued working cherishing her status as the lightning ambassador. Time went on and a young nature fae Alma asked to join as their student having been inspired by Storm’s arms. Tempest was more than happy to take another one inspired by the greatness of the science under her wing and she moved to live with them. She focused on mixing science with living beings when it came to her studies but helped the others too she being a fae and thus small enough to enter the machines to fix them. With total of four dragons in the team Tempest was proud of her factory and was excited to create something great in the future.

Life in the workshop was peaceful if a little busy new projects being started and some of them even reached finished state. However, as the time went on it started to get a bit small for everyone's creations and it had suffered a lot due to occasional explosions. Tempest and Parcha's daughter Rosalin and her mate Pernis came to their aid the architect couple suggesting to move the workshop underground. The ground was always rising in the Focal Point which meant there was always empty space down there from where the ground had been lifted. The workshop would also be less likely to cover up sky and all four residents were onboard.

The workshop was around in the middle when it came to priority the inn and the temple being ahead of it. It though did not mean the workshop residents should just wait till it was their turn. Instead they packed the machines and items they didn't need and moved to make items they would need when building the new workshop. They especially needed walls that could take blasts better than the metallic ones they had currently and started to work to figure out the material. Alma got a little bit help from clan's alchemist Megabrain but most of the time the original trio worked just by themselves while Alma and Megabrain made experiments together.

Events in the clan rarely affected life inside the workshop but one afternoon the miths that had joined the science family turned hostile while most of Alma's creations acted otherwise weird the gang deciding to lock all of them into cages till the clan was able to to figure out what had gotten to them. Apparently all of clan's non-dragons, excluding robots that the gang had made, all of the sudden turned hostile it stalling every project the clan had. If that wasn't weird enough Alma fell severely sick out of the blue not that long after the familiars turned hostile the gang taking turns to make sure she was alright. She eventually was but everyone agreed she should not continue working until having fully recovered.

The clan having many stalling projects had started to work on the cave that was to house the new workshop just in time for the science team to figure out material they wanted the walls to be. They had started mass-producing wall and floor panels, as those they were easiest to move and attach, it being soon time for annual lightning holiday and Tempest would not have time to do them during that time. However, one evening when they were making the panels someone threw some bottles through a window before closing it the bottles breaking upon impact whatever being inside of them starting to react with each other. The reaction filled the workshop with gas Tempest turning off the machine before her legs gave in and she passed out.

The science family later woke up in the healing offices Tempest being the last. They were told that Megabrain had thrown the bottles and that there had been an attempt of Shade summoning while they had been out along with massive lair revamp, unintended one, but none of that mattered to Tempest. It was late July and she was worried she had missed the lightning holiday the Spire employers potentially being mad if she didn't join to help. The holiday was starting in few days and other than being little dizzy upon waking up none of them had any need for rest and Tempest and Parcha rushed to the lighting domain while the other two kept working in the workshop.

To compensate for being very late Tempest and Parcha stayed at the Spire for full week and half until returning home to continue their projects. With the panels being done for time being they started to make up lighting equipment, air vents and other needed stuff. The clan was badly behind schedule with the temple and inn but luckily got a little bit of help from fire nearing the midwinter that letting them finish up the projects taking priority over the workshop. With them done the science team joined to help with the project getting the lift to work among the first things. It took few months but eventually the new workshop was finished everyone having their own specialized wing along with few backups Tempest herself having two: one for science and another one for ambassador job.

Small pile of pink petals.

Tempest got used to her new workshop fast and soon enough she was back in working with her projects like was everyone else. Alma befriended clan’s new alchemist Elena and the two had an experiment called Doug that ran away, Virgil spent his time taking care of their machines and fixing them while Tempest and Parcha worked both together and alone, both in the workshop and in the Tempest Spire. They were doing good progress, they had made a machine that memorized the moment like a very fast painting, they were trying to figure out how to capture longer moments and they had made some transport machines for Alma so the small dragon was able to keep up with the bigger ones.

Tempest had few dozens of projects under work all the time and one of the bigger ones was the time machine. It was hard to figure out how it would work, they had tried all kind of prototypes but most of them just broke their test subjects, random food and stones. Occasionally they managed to speed up rotting of the food Tempest seeing that as progress. The fact that the food rotted meant it had moved to the future, technically, while it had still stayed in the same time as the dragons. That though was not what they tried to do and the scientists had to keep on trying.

Weeks passed by and few more smaller projects were finished as break from the time machine. The science family was holding a small meeting, which they had started to do after everyone got their own wings, just to check how everyone was doing and to relax a bit. During such a meeting Alma suggested them to try using dimensions, primarily sub-dimensions to transfer stuff through time and Tempest was excited to try that out. If they learned how to use dimensions, they could eventually make a dimension machine, maybe even a multiverse portal. But first they had to get that time machine working.

After reading few dozens of dimension books and making at least double of prototypes Tempest and Parcha eventually managed to send a rock to the future. It vanished from their machine and it came back after some time unchanged. From their perspective it didn’t seem much but if the rock had been sentient, it would have just experienced time hop to the future. Tempest was excited and with working time travel mechanism she and Parcha started to work with ways to control the time hops. That was way easier than learning to control the sub-dimension stuff and the two were ready to make full-sized time machine in no time.

The time machine was done as soon as they got the materials. Tempest was excited to try it out as, unlike with the prototype where the time hop happened in metallic cylinder, the time machine’s cylinder was clear, they were able to see what happened in there. They tested with rocks, and sending them to the future seemed to work just fine. Past was a bit trickier as they could not just go to the past to see if the hop had been a success. They sent one rock they had randomly found in the time machine to the past but beyond that they didn’t try that.

After sending food and rocks for who knew how many times Tempest and Alma agreed it was time to add some spice to the tests. It was time to sent something living. They all knew finding volunteers would be like finding the nature deity bathing in Wyrmwound so they didn’t try to ask anyone to help, yet. Instead they turned their attention to Alma’s test subjects and decided to test time travel with them. It worked. The living creatures came back from sub-dimension unharmed and after few dozens of tests they decided to try back and forth travel. One of their beastclan coworkers, a mith that often worked with Parcha, volunteered to go to the future and send stuff to the past, then they would return that item and the mith could come back. That was to avoid time paradoxes.

The back-and-forth experiment worked the mith sending the upcoming ice holiday item for them. Alma captured the proof with fast painting -machine and the mith came back to their time after they had sent the item back. With the mith the scientists were able to check if traveling to the past worked and they did just that. Apparently that was possible though none of them had been able to prove the mith had visited them in the past because, apparently, the time coordinates had sent the mith to a moment when everyone had been asleep. Tempest found that funny, as if they had experienced the mith coming from the future, they would not have needed to test it out.

The scientists were doing more time hops to the future and they were preparing to send the mith to the destination time. However, Alma’s experiments had escaped, everyone knowing it was Doug’s doing, and one of them messed up the time coordinates causing them to send the mith farther to the future than what was intended. At the moment no one was worried, the mith knew how to come back, and the group focused on capturing the escaped test subjects. After that they went to wait for the mith’s return, but the mith didn’t return. They waited for hours, they even got to sleep, but the mith did not come back. That was when Tempest suggested they sent someone to check if everything was alright but they didn’t know how or to when, Tempest had not had time to check to what time the mith had been sent.

Virgil had managed to capture the time coordinates and he also volunteered to go. Parcha, however, was against that. Based on how the time hops seemed to work they needed the time machine to be functional, and considering how far into the future the mith had been sent they had to make sure the time machine would still work in the distant future. That meant that Virgil, Parcha and Tempest should all stay in the present because they knew how to take care of the machine. Alma could go to the future but she was a bit too small to use the machine, and someone had to take care of her test subjects. As they were all disqualified, they had to go out and find someone who would volunteer to help them.

Tempest decided to try finding volunteers from the industrial area under which their workshop was. Unsurprisingly, none of the dragons in there were particularly thrilled to try out time traveling. Actually, they all denied and Tempest had to return to her workshop without volunteers. Alma and Virgil arrived soon too either of them having volunteers neither. Only one who had managed to find anyone was Parcha who came back with Pascal, clan’s wind ambassador. None of them had expected to find any volunteers and seeing the obelisk was a very nice surprise to all of them. They escorted their volunteer to the time machine where Doug had seemingly had a party and Virgil had to clean the cylinder before it could be used.

Tempest and Parcha checked the control panel that seemed to work just fine, it was just a little dirty. Alma explained Pascal what the situation was and Tempest assured everything would be fine when the obelisk started to have second thoughts. Despite seemingly being nervous Pascal still stepped in the cylinder leaving his pet dog behind, and all scientists wished him luck as the machine initialized the time hop. After the obelisk had vanished from the cylinder, the four scientists sat down to wait. Tempest stared the clock on top of the time machine which indicated the current time and when it reached Pascal’s return time the machine activated again and Pascal stepped out with the mith.

The scientists went to check if the mith was alright and they asked why it had not come back. The mith said that the workshop was abandoned and devoid of power that far in the future. That worried Tempest who couldn’t see the workshop just being abandoned like that, and Virgil realized to ask what had happened to the rest of the clan. The mith had not stepped outside the workshop, it had fixed generators, but Pascal had and he really didn’t want to answer the question. He took his dog and prepared to leave saying he wanted some rest, which he clearly seemed to need. Tempest, wanting to know what had happened, offered her bed for the obelisk but he denied. As he left he asked them to never go to that time, ever. Seeing how bothered the obelisk was by what he had seen Tempest thought that might be for the best.

Traits

Tempest is an arcane ridgeback with grayish lilac body with white and cyan spots and cyan wings with few stripes and dots she wanting to have as much the cool lightning color on her as possible. Despite that she, being a massive lightning fan, has magical body paint she bought during her first Thundercrack Carnivale which turns her spines and claws brass and gives her clear scales making her skin less smooth. The paint turns her grey with pale face, legs and stripes decorating her from neck all the way to the tip of her tail. Her wings on the other hand are darker and have storm cloud pattern on them and on that there is a painted lightning shooting out of it her belly having similar pattern. Having often been very close to explosions some of Tempest’s spines have snapped them being variety of length while her wings are ragged and have few holes. She has noticeable large and bright eyes inherited from her fae relatives.

Tempest is a lightning fanatic loving everything lightning related and that is very hard to miss when looking at her to the point that even the Tempest Spire took notice. She has the ambassador emblem on her forehead, tome and halo as a sign for her dedication which she wears with bride wherever she goes. Along with those she wears a respirator having a electric powered filter and rags that protect her and the generator on her chest from sand and heat when she is making her way to the Spire though they more often protect her from her own accident hence why they are rather sooty. On her head she has headband pressing the rag against her head which she also uses to hold a cyan lightbuld for extra light for working. The movable generator on her chest is used to power up the respirator and the long claws under her wings used to power up devices when not near other power sources she not being able to generate electricity herself. Along with those she has brass goggles, gloves, spats and tail guard for extra protection, mainly from screws, and they have backup gears attached to them. At the tip of her tail Tempest has a cyan lantern which only purpose is to tell where her tail is when blackouts happen.

Tempest has energetic, fanatic, happy and fast voice which is always full of optimism. She tends to speak before thinking and it is not unheard for her to struggle with her sentences when her sense finally catches up with what her mouth is saying and attempt to change it to something more appropriate or less embarrassing. She also tends to use weird phrases including science jargon making her a bit hard to understand. She has clear American accent.

Small pile of pink petals.

Tempest is energetic and optimistic dragon never seen angry. She drives to achieve something great and all the setbacks are just reasons to try harder. There is no need to get mad over them. On the positive side that help her to keep going despite her low attention span and careless often throwing her back to the very start of her projects. On the other hand though she may push herself to exhaustion trying to make something work believing it will eventually work if she works hard enough. She isn’t the most careful dragon and she also tends to forget take care of herself and she would be a serious threat to herself if someone wasn’t looking after her.

Tempest lives in her workshop with her coworkers who more or less help her with her projects and keep her legs on ground but other than those dragons Tempest is rarely seen interacting with other dragons. She though is somewhat social enjoying company when she gets that and though she is kind and supporting she can also be a bit annoying and out of touch. She lives in her own world in where she gets lost easily and may behave like others share her world though right kind of dragons may be able to keep her head out of clouds. She cares for her clan mates and wants to help them the best she can but she isn’t the best at noticing those needing help and the ways she wants to solve the problems may not be what others were looking for.

Tempest is best known for her fanatic obsession for everything lightning related. She was fascinated by all they tried to accomplish and how they tried to do things more inclusive than most other elements. She started to worship the lightning deity and admire all the great things His flight has done while being basically blind to all the bad things. Though she sees lightning better than anything else she isn’t toxic and though constantly telling others how great the science is she isn’t offended when others dismiss that. She feels a bit of pity but keeps that to herself understanding that arcane dragons naturally saw lightning a bit weird. Asking them to look up to science was like asking plague dragon to like dense forests.

Tempest’s workshop is full of familiars that are more and less co-owned by all the residents. They though have been shared so that all have some familiars to look after and Tempest has Spirit of Lightning, her ambassador familiar, and a Workshop Monitor. Spirit, who Tempest calls Boss, has surprisingly fitting name it often travelling between the Spire and the clan making sure Tempest is where she is needed. It is a bit proud only talking through telepathy and only to Tempest or Parcha but it being basically the representative of the Stormcatcher Tempest ignores that and treat it like authority. Monitor, ironically named Cube, on the other hand is a simple AI pretty much just floating in the workshop having no mind of what it is doing. It was the first artificial intelligence Tempest created the rest having been sold or donated to the Spire and it is dear to her because of that.

Small pile of pink petals.

Loving everything lightning like Tempest has studied to make her arcane magic appear as close to lightning magic as she possible can. Surely enough spells, the very few she uses, look like pink lightning bolts but lack all the actual properties of electricity except emitting light which works just fine. The spells Tempest use are rather limited but she is able to grab items from distance and change their sizes just fine. She, however, can’t levitate items and she usually uses her magic to throw items to her instead.

Tempest’s passion is with science and she is relatively good with it taking count her natural element. She has managed to create a generator that turns arcane magic into electricity and using that technology she has managed to create artificial arms to another arcane dragon. She understands physics, chemistry and mathematics nicely and she can do very precise job which are all necessary when trying to make devices that work. She can also draw but that skill is limited to simple blueprints.
