Biography

Doug was originally a silky fanrat known as EX 26 living in a lab somewhere underground. He had born and grown up in there and being in a cage was all he knew. He and his siblings were taken care of by a small butterfly like long necked being and occasionally a larger sparkling being looking like a bee unicorn, that smelled awful, was also there. They did feed them but Doug still feared them. They had taken many of his siblings somewhere and when they came back they had smelled weird till they had died. The smell of death and whatever the long-neck butterfly and the large unicorn bee used on his siblings was ever present and it kept Doug very anxious.

Eventually it was Doug’s turn to visit the space with awful smells they making him very nervous. He tried to find a way out of his prison but the metal hurt his teeth and there were no holes through which he could have gone through. The unicorn bee grabbed Doug as he was trying to escape through the other side it placing him to an elevated plane keeping him in place as the butterfly stung him with something. After that was done the unicorn bee placed him back to the cage and he was brought back to where his siblings were kept.

After that Doug’s siblings started to fear him, like they all did when someone visited the space, they trying to get as far away from him as possible, or as far as the cages let them. Dough knew that was because he smelled like death, or rather he carried the smell heralding death, and Doug waited till it would come. It though did not and instead the cage he lived in started to get small, and his siblings started to look tiny. The two beings overseeing them moved him to a larger cage and started to keep even closer eye on him than before making Doug feel uncomfortable.

During the following days Doug kept on growing and he started to notice the overseers’ speech contained varied sounds, way more complex than what he used as a rodent. Around that time he was given his name and after learning the concept of a name he learned that the long-neck butterfly was called “Alma” while the unicorn bee was “Elena”. At least they kept calling each other those. He also started to slowly understand what they said and they even got him to understand repeating line and dot compilations they used to communicate without making sounds.

Few weeks later, after the “dragons” as they called themselves had gotten Doug to speak some of their words, they tried to teach him “magic”. He had known he could make a very bright scratch when threatened if he had enough strength but he had not known dragons could do something similar he having never seen a dragon fight. According to Alma, the one spending more time in the lab, he was able to use light magic, as a light dragon. Doug had not been aware that he was a dragon though it would have explained why he was so large when compared to his siblings. He was still able to use that bright scratch but other than that he was unable to do what Alma or Elena asked him to do no matter how many times they tried.

As time went on Doug’s understanding of the world he lived in grew larger as did his cognitive abilities. He was still kept in cage as were his siblings and Doug started to think that should not have been the case. If he was a dragon then he should be allowed to walk free as other dragons, and his siblings deserved the same right. He studied how the “pure dragons” opened his cage and what kind of routines they had. He noticed there was a long period of time every day when neither Alma or Elena showed up Doug making assumption that was when they slept. He also managed to figure out how to open his cage and when the two dragons had gone to sleep he decided to act. He opened his cage, carefully, and released his siblings they starting to cause some noise in the cage room Doug hoping Alma would not hear that. After they were all freed Doug opened the door through which the dragons always arrived he and the other rats stepping into area they had never seen before.

Unlike the cage and the experiment rooms that were rather dark the area outside the door was bright even with light toned down and Doug felt like going blind. After his eyes got used to more light he and the fellow rats checked their surroundings every direction being silent. Doug had no idea where to go after exiting the cage room but he knew they needed to get out before anyone noticed them. He and the rats wandered the bright hallways finding Alma’s weird looking nest, few more cage rooms with too noisy creatures to free without being noticed and few more experiment rooms until they eventually got out of Alma’s lab the branching path leading to three other areas. Doug had no idea which way would lead out, if any of them did, and decided to check them randomly.

They started with something called “maintenance wing” Doug having no idea what that was supposed to mean but assumed it was name of the dragon’s lab Alma’s having been called “bioengineering wing”. They looked nothing like wings and Doug assumed it was a dragon thing he did not understand. They had wings after all. The master of the maintenance lab was apparently called Virgil Doug seeing the weird spiky metallic dragon hanging from a balk like a bat. In there they found a sign that seemed to show escape route but it led to a metallic door which Doug could not open. The other rats started to get impatient and Doug decided to try another way before they woke up Virgil.

After getting out of the maintenance wing Doug and the rats decided to check the “science wing 2” the room assigned to someone called Parcha being empty when they got there. They found the chunky dragon few rooms ahead already awake working with something Doug getting scared the others were about to wake up too. Doug decided it was better to back out and turned around but not before his fellow rats managed to pull a lever on the wall. That caught Parcha’s attention Doug leading the rats to the remaining wing, “science wing 1”, the room labeled “Tempest” housing another larger spiky dragon sleeping on the ground.

Parcha had gotten out of the room and was calling for Alma saying her test subjects had escaped the small dragon soon rushing out of her nest. In the science wing one Doug and the rats were trying to find a way out something smelling like having burned in there. While they were hastily trying to find a way out few of the rats found a wall panel that was partly open and Doug used his dragon force to pull in off the hole leading to a smallish tunnel network into which he and the rats escaped. At first he tunnels were large enough for Doug to fit through but eventually they suddenly got too small for him his rat sibling going through while he stayed behind turning around to push through a slightly smaller but still fitting tunnel they had passed by.

Alma and the other dragons tried to get Doug come back by offering him all kinds of stuff from giving him food, mainly cakes and other sweets, to letting his roam free if he came back. Doug though did not trust them and kept hiding in the tunnel network unable to get far no matter what route he tried. Every large tunnel ended with tunnel too small for Doug to fit through. To survive he stole food from the food storage and to keep himself entertained he sneaked to spy the lab dragons peeking from behind the panels. He took a liking to drawing as he watched the scientists draw blueprints and started to draw them behind the panels when managing to steal some markers. He remained trapped there occasionally sneaking to Alma’s wing to release her test subjects but the small dragon had increased security in her wing after Doug had escaped that making his mission challenging. He knew she still tried to catch him even after she stopped luring him with the sweets.

Traits

Doug was originally an ordinary silky fanrat and that can still be seen clearly from his look. He still has his brown fur with pale underbelly, bare legs, hands and tail, large ears, golden fans on his back and cheeks, short whiskers and dimly glowing antennae and bumps on his back. He was turned into a dragon by fusing bogsneak DNA and he shares some traits with the alchemy breed, mainly the longish and thick neck and thick legs. He can move his back fans like wings but he can’t fold them, and he can flicker his tongue which is not forked. Like natural silky fanrats’ Doug’s eyes are golden like light dragons’.

Doug has never heard term “fashion” and he has barely seen dragons outside the scientist. He though knows dragons wear clothes and has stolen few white lab coats to use to cover himself. He is wearing two different ones on top of each other as he was unable to find one that fit him perfectly and he was unable to use size alteration spells that were attached to the clothes. Because he spends a lot of time in dusty tunnels the once white coats are more gray than white, and Doug is unable to clean them. Along with the coats Doug wears a black safety helmet to protect his head in case the tunnels collapse he having tied it to his head with a black wrap both of which he has stolen. He also has silver glasses that help him see farther he having stolen them too.

Doug is decent with talking but his origin as a fanrat is still easy to hear. He has deepish voice but it is always frantic and squeaks can be heard in between his words. His vocabulary is limited and he often describes things from clear not-a-dragon perspective which causes his speech to be hard to keep up with occasionally. He is also poor with stressing words and he has no idea how to have a conversation. He sounds like having an American accent.

Doug was originally a fanrat and that is rather easy to see even after gaining dragon level on consciousness. He is timid and easily scared rather escaping than fighting. Despite of his rodent origin he is smart and calculating and he understands concept of lying making him hard to catch. He primarily thinks about his own survival and doesn’t feel remorse mainly due to having never been taught that. He though is capable to feel compassion and helps others in need as long as there is no risk of being stabbed to back. He is also artistic and enjoys both looking drawings and drawing them himself.

Doug is unfamiliar with concept of having company or spending time with others and he is generally all by himself all the time and even if he knew he would prefer solitude. Though feeling compassion he is rather distrusting especially when it comes to dragons and other creatures able to think highly and is often reluctant to approach others even if they are in danger. He often wants to help but he fears they might stab him in the back and capture him. He would generally also make a poor companion he having never learned social skills and can’t read the room or other’s body language and he may come across as very rude he not knowing what “polite” means. Deep down he is still well meaning if a little misguided, or rather, not guided at all.

Though preferring being alone, especially when it comes to dragons and beastclans, Doug doesn’t mind hanging out with other rats he seeing them as his siblings even when there is no actual blood relationship. Doug is not familiar with concept of company or pets and sees the rats visiting him as visitors. Still, he has named the one visiting him the most that being a dumbo rat called Company it having been among the rats to escape with Doug. It is not that attached to Doug and mainly visits the weird dragon rat due to its curiosity which is case with every rat that visits Doug. Doug never feeds them but thank to his origin as a rat he is able to understand them being aware they are as hungry as he is. He also knows they don’t understand his drawings but he would have been surprised if they would have.

Doug was originally a fanrat which both gives him some skills rare to dragons but also hinder him. He can speak, read, draw and even calculate but he can’t use magic in more advantageous levels. He can use a bright scratch but nothing more. He though can alight the room around him thanks to his glowing body parts and he has very sharp smell, touch and hearing. His glowing parts help him draw even in dark but he is unable to comprehend shapes like natural dragons do and his images are always more or less abstract. He though likes them he not caring what he can and can’t do though being able to understand fellow rats is important to him. He is also unable to fly or even glide he not having actual wings needed to do that.
