With Eclipse gone and no new recruits, life in the underground had stagnated a bit. All the energy went into training and caring for the eggs. Winterstone had stayed holed up in her office, trying to formulate plans and back up plans in case Eclipse failed to return (Kipling didn't want to think about that possibility), but even she took plenty of time out of her busy schedule to check up on her son and impending grandchildren. Kipling was training on his own one morning, trying to perfect his trident fighting, when he was interrupted by Rori and Luster. The weight distribution of the trident was something he was still getting used to, and he was much more used to the swish of a sword than the stabbiness of a trident, but the trident was actually a weapon that belonged to him, so he figured it best that he take the time to master it. He was so focused on the practice dummy he was trying to stab that he jumped when Rori called his name. It embedded itself in the wall, having narrowly missed Luster's head. Rori looked at it in shock for a second, but looked too excited to stay concerned. Her paws were shifting, clearly struggling to stay still. "Wow, you're getting good at that thing!" Luster teased. "You know, if you wanted me gone you could have just told me, no need for murder or anything like that." "Sorry." Kipling said, sheepishly scratching his frills. "What's up?" "The nest is hatching!" Rori exclaimed, finally able to release her excitement. "Come on, lets go!" The trio raced down out of the training room and down the tunnels until they reached the nesting room. They slowed as they entered it, walking in very quietly, so as not to disturb the family in this moment. They were not the only ones who had come to witness the event, however. Querida and Simon has also squeezed their way in, watching from the outskirts. Even Winterstone and Wayuin watched from a distance. The only two dragons standing by the nest as the eggs quivered were Xinskarr and Xaiya. It wouldn't be long now until the hatchlings emerged. The prospective parents hardly seemed aware of the gathering around them. They only had eyes for their children. Kipling couldn't blame them. He was enthralled too. It was impossible to tell how much time had passed before the first hatchling emerged from his shell, damp from the fluid inside the egg. Xaiya scooped him up immediately and began cleaning him off, while Xinskarr continued to watch with such an intensity Kipling was sure his only thought was protecting them. The new mother hesitated before handing her son over, as though reluctant to let go so soon. "Trust me, you don't want to miss the others. Your son will still be here when they arrive." Winterstone promised her daughter-in-law. Xaiya nodded and passed on her son to the older wildclaw, who began to finish his cleaning. As much as Kipling wanted to keep an eye on the hatching, he couldn't help but be amazed by how small the coatl was as he squirmed, eyes closed, reacting the to touch of his grandmother. A loud crack brought his attention to the nest once more. The second hatchling had been born, a wildclaw this time. Xinskarr's eyes widened as his daughter tumbled out of her egg. She was tiny, even for a hatchling, and Kipling could almost see his protective instincts go into overdrive. He moved forward and picked her up, as though trying to comprehend just how she could be so small. Querida moved forward to take this one, though Xinskarr struggled with letting her go. it was only with the crack of the third egg hatching that his grip loosened and Querida was able to ease her out. The third let out a loud cry as his wet face was met with the cool breeze from the crack. For such a small dragon, he has a pretty impressive set of lungs. Xaiya scooped him up and began to soothe him. Once he was calm, Winterstone and Querida brought forward the other two hatchlings and handed them to the new parents. Kipling could not take his eyes off of the new hatchlings. They were so beautiful and perfect, it was then that he realized just what they were fighting for. Querida had said it, when trying to comfort Xinskarr, but now he understood it. Right now, these dragons were coming into a world where their very existence put them in danger. The very clan that they were supposed to call home was ruled by a dragon who very possibly wanted them dead, not for anything they had done but for something their grandmother had done. That was a burden no dragon should have to bear, let alone a newly hatched hatchling. They were fighting for a future where no hatchling would have that on their shoulders, where every hatchling would grow up knowing they were safe and loved. His thoughts were interrupted by Rori leaning down and whispering in his ear. "I can't wait until we have hatchlings someday." She whispered. "We?" Kipling asked, caught by surprise. "I mean I." Rori said quickly, starting to blush. "Sorry, slip of the tongue." Luster glanced at his two friends but said nothing. Rori's comment sent Kipling into a spiral. He had never thought about the possibility of having hatchlings someday. I mean, he had thought he probably would at some point, but that seemed so far off, especially as it became apparent that war was on the rise. Besides, he had never been in any sort of romantic relationship. Did Rori like him? I mean, of course she liked him, but did she like him as more than a friend? He had never thought about Rori in that way before, but now his heart was pounding and his mouth was dry and he wasn't sure. She was a very pretty dragon, and she was so much more than that. She was funny and clever and loyal and the best friend anyone could ever ask for. Every time he saw her, his heart beat in ways he didn't know possible. There was nothing he liked more than spending time with her. Maybe he did like her in that way. He didn't know how he hadn't seen it before. He looked up at her, seeing her in a new light, but her eyes were fixed on the hatchlings again. Maybe he had been mistaken, maybe it really had been just a slip of the tongue. Besides, he didn't want to ruin what they had now. Luster already felt like the odd one out, and he didn't want to make him even more of a third wheel. Not to mention, there was a war of sorts going on. It was hardly the right time for that sort of thing. All this could be sorted out later. Right now, what mattered was overthrowing Windkeep Tower's tyrannical rulers and ensuring a safe world for these tiny ones. Banella laughed as Nova told a joke and took another sip of tea. The graceful imperial had presented herself before Banella not long after she had gained control of Windkeep Tower, offering her services and fine tastes. After that, she had come by regularly to showcase her latest perfume, or gift the queen with some fine jewelry her husband had purchased for her. Surprisingly, the two had become fast friends. It was interesting, Banella hadn't had a real friend since she was a child. She had just had work partners and underlings. It was nice to have someone she could be real with. Suddenly, there was a creak of the door, and Topaz waltzed in. Banella's heir was no longer a hatchling, but was growing quite steadily. He walked in with such an air of confidence and grace that Banella couldn't help but be proud of her son. "What is it, darling?" Banella asked, setting down her china teacup. "It's time for my lesson, isn't it?" Topaz asked. "I'm ready to learn more about my heritage and birthright." Banella had to bite her tongue to cut off her original response. Every since mentioning that the blood of royals flowed through his veins, Topaz had been dying to learn more about his history. Unfortunately, that was still a painful topic for Banella. Every since seeing Basil, she had no longer felt the intense resentment towards Basil and her family that she once had, but the grief that followed still cut deep. She had many regrets, and she did not want to delve into them. That said she couldn't help but wonder if they'd be proud of her and where she was now. No, it didn't do to dwell on such things. "Excuse me, Nova. It is indeed lesson time." Banella said, getting to her feet. "Of course." Nova said, bowing her head. "Same time tomorrow?" "Same time tomorrow." Banella confirmed. With that, the imperial set down her teacup, gathered her things, and left. "What are we learning today?" Topaz asked after she had left. Despite his composure, Banella could see the excitement and anticipation gleaming in his eyes. "Diplomatic skills." Banella said. As soon as the words left her mouth, the light left Topaz's eyes and he deflated. "Again?" He whined. "Ah, what did I say about complaining?" Banella said, giving her son a sharp glare. "A true prince doesn't show his disappointment, he simply adapts and moves on. No matter how much you are born with, many things in life aren't going to go your way. You must learn to keep moving on. There is always another way, you just have to find it." "Yes mother." Topaz said, clearly still disappointed. Banella raised an eyebrow and he regained his former posture and held his head up high. "I mean, yes mother." "That's more like it." Banella said with a smile. "Now, where were we? Ah yes, diplomacy. Now, there are many charismatic dragons you will meet, the trick is not letting them swindle you out of what you want. I have to use this one with your father quite a bit, or else he'd talk me out of all my power completely. Even with the small things, you want to show other dragons who's in charge, but you need to do so in a way that ensures they're compliance. The trick is making it seem like something they want as well." Banella carried on the lesson, watching her son lap it all up, wide eyed. Banella hoped to be around to be queen for a long time, but in the event of her death, Topaz would make an excellent replacement. She just hoped Quartz wouldn't try to mess things up. Garnet leaped around the room, sending flashes of magic wherever she went. A gust of wind here a breeze there, she could control the wind like no other. With her magic, she could whip up wild hurricanes, but summon only the slightest breeze to lift a single paper in the air, all in the same breath. She was swift, precise and graceful, everything her father trained her to be. "Very good." Quartz purred as he stepped into the room. It was not often that her father gave compliments and Garnet glowed with pride. "Did you see how I-" She began, before Quartz cut her off. "Yes, I saw." he confirmed. "But simply using wind magic is not enough. Now that you've harnessed your innate magic, the time has come to learn how to draw from the sources around you to master any element thrown at you. It is only then that you truly become unstoppable." "Yes, father." Garnet said, dipping her head. She felt determination flare withing her, and her heart pounded with exhilaration. This was what she wanted, true power, and she would stop at nothing to get it. She would train without sleeping or eating, whatever her father demanded of her, she would do, so long as it made her stronger, and she knew he would. After all, Quartz would stop at nothing to ensure his daughter was next in line for the throne, and that would only happen if she could best Topaz in combat. It would not be an easy fight, Garnet knew how diligently her mother was training the prince, but she hoped she could one day prove herself to be the strongest of the siblings. Rubywing sat, locked in her room, lit only by the lantern she had bought at the Brightshine Jubilee all those years ago. It was funny, so much had changed and yet it was only just over a year until a whole cycle had passed, and she felt like she was back were she started. She was trapped in her father's mansion, used for her skills, and Rhowen was under the command of her father. She was grateful her father spent so much time with his children, it allowed Ruby to do whatever she wanted. Of course, she was still busy with work. She knew her father valued loyalty over everything, and that meant the pressure of keeping bonds with clan allies strong was intense. She was so immersed in her work that she didn't hear the door open. She jumped as she felt talons grip her shoulders and a familiar voice whispered "Boo!" "Sapphire! You scared me!" Ruby exclaimed, dropping her quill and leaving an ink splatter on the letter she was supposed to be sending. She'd have to rewrite it later. "Sorry." Sapphire apologized, even though that had been his intention. "How are you doing today?" Ruby asked. "Are your parents ignoring you again?" Ever since Ruby had saved the young prince's life, he had stuck to his half-sister like glue. It had helped that with both of his parents having picked a favourite child, Sapphire was often left to his on devices. It became clear after weeks passed after Garnet's initiation ceremony with no announcement of Sapphire's, they had no role in mind for their third son. Even though Sapphire claimed to be unbothered, Ruby could tell he was hurt. In a way, he was an outcast in the family the same way Ruby was. "What are you working on?" Sapphire asked, changing the subject. "I'm trying to draft a letter to our allies." Ruby sighed. "These are difficult times, and I can't seem to find the right way to let them know of the changes to Windkeep Tower. We are not the same clan they originally bonded with." "What was it like, before?" Sapphire asked. "You know I can't talk about it." Ruby reminded him. "Dad would kill me, quite literally. Or-" She trailed away. "Or what?" Sapphire asked. She hadn't told Sapphire how Quartz had threatened to kill Rhowen and Rammus if she didn't comply with his orders. While she doubted he would kill Rhowen when he was the one guarding Fenn and Elric, Rammus was an easily disposable dragon in Quartz's eyes. Rubywing wouldn't put it past him to kill his own son to get his way. "Nothing, it's not important." Ruby insisted. "Hey, are you hungry? I could take a break from this and we could have some lunch." "I'm starving!" Sapphire said, jumping for joy at the thought of food. "Great! I'll be back with some food in a bit." Ruby said, stacking her papers and clearing space of her desk. "Hey Ruby?" "Yes?" "I know my parents are threatening you." Sapphire said, once again displaying a higher level of intuition than Ruby assumed of him. "I know you don't like working here and you miss the way Windkeep Tower was before. Those dragons in the ice, they were the old king and queen, right?" Rubywing sighed, feeling the weight of grief once more. "Elric wasn't a king, but Fenn was our queen. She was kind, and gentle, and wanted nothing more than to build a home where everyone was welcome. I fear Windkeep Tower is losing that. We already have lost that." "I wish there was something we could do to make it better." Sapphire sighed. "I don't like it very much right now. I think I'd like it the way it was before." "I think you would too." Ruby smiled sadly. "But unfortunately, that's a thing of the past." "But what if we find a way to overthrow my parents! What if we could free Fenn and Elric!" Sapphire suggested, growing more excited. "Keep your voice down! Dad will have my head if he hears be talking to you about this!" Ruby hissed. Then her wings drooped. "It's a nice thought, it really is, but it's more complex than that. Your parents hold a lot of power, and the two of us can't really do a lot about it, not on our own." But she could tell Sapphire wasn't really listening. Ruby sighed. Here was yet another dragon she was trying to keep safe from the evil clutches of Quartz and Banella, but Sapphire was making it awfully hard. She didn't know if there was anything she'd be able to do if he poked his nose in too far. ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @Alwaid @zzzhorses @Amezrou @ScrivenerRook @Kizzan @clarax @lilastar @tigressRising @Disillusionist @Aetherstorm @rainphee @RiaFire11 @Tirtouga678 @catmeow1 @ShinyDecidueye @AlchemyFox ----- Woot! Another long chapter! Sorry this didn't get written yesterday like I planned, I started a second job yesterday morning and after two shifts I was so exhausted I didn't have the energy to write! But here we are now! By the way, if anyone wants either of the two coatl boys from the nest, I'm not planning on keeping them. They're on the AH for 15 gems, but I would be happy to give them away for free to you readers!

Chapter 127: For the Future

It had been about a month since Xaiya arrived with the eggs, and Rori and Luster had settled in nicely to life in the Underground. Kipling had to admit, it was nice to have them around again. It had felt strange without them after all their adventures, like he had been missing a wing.

"Sorry." Kipling said, sheepishly scratching his frills. "What's up?"

"The nest is hatching!" Rori exclaimed, finally able to release her excitement. "Come on, lets go!"

The trio raced down out of the training room and down the tunnels until they reached the nesting room.

All three eggs had cracks down the side.

All this could be sorted out later. Right now, what mattered was overthrowing Windkeep Tower's tyrannical rulers and ensuring a safe world for these tiny ones.

There is always another way, you just have to find it."

"Yes mother." Topaz said, clearly still disappointed. Banella raised an eyebrow and he regained his former posture and held his head up high. "I mean, yes mother."

"That's more like it." Banella said with a smile. The trick is making it seem like something they want as well."

Banella carried on the lesson, watching her son lap it all up, wide eyed.

It is only then that you truly become unstoppable."

"Yes, father." Garnet said, dipping her head.

She jumped as she felt talons grip her shoulders and a familiar voice whispered "Boo!"

"Sapphire!

"Are your parents ignoring you again?"

Ever since Ruby had saved the young prince's life, he had stuck to his half-sister like glue.

We are not the same clan they originally bonded with."

"What was it like, before?" Sapphire asked.

I could take a break from this and we could have some lunch."

"I'm starving!" Sapphire said, jumping for joy at the thought of food.

"Great! I'll be back with some food in a bit." Ruby said, stacking her papers and clearing space of her desk.

"Hey Ruby?"

"Yes?"

"I know my parents are threatening you." Sapphire said, once again displaying a higher level of intuition than Ruby assumed of him. "I know you don't like working here and you miss the way Windkeep Tower was before. Those dragons in the ice, they were the old king and queen, right?"

Rubywing sighed, feeling the weight of grief once more. "Elric wasn't a king, but Fenn was our queen. She was kind, and gentle, and wanted nothing more than to build a home where everyone was welcome. I fear Windkeep Tower is losing that. We already have lost that."

"I wish there was something we could do to make it better." Sapphire sighed. "I don't like it very much right now. I think I'd like it the way it was before."

"I think you would too." Ruby smiled sadly. "But unfortunately, that's a thing of the past."

"But what if we find a way to overthrow my parents!

Your parents hold a lot of power, and the two of us can't really do a lot about it, not on our own."

But she could tell Sapphire wasn't really listening. Ruby sighed. Here was yet another dragon she was trying to keep safe from the evil clutches of Quartz and Banella, but Sapphire was making it awfully hard. She didn't know if there was anything she'd be able to do if he poked his nose in too far.

Woot!

@Petall My word, this was a really fascinating chapter! It's always interesting to see how new generations of characters interact with the older ones. It's a bit too early to tell for Xinskarr's and Xaiya's children, but Rori and Kipling show promise. So do Quartz' and Banella's kids, for that matter -- as antagonists, tbh. xD I peeked at their bios, and I rather like the idea of Garnet backing up Topaz instead of trying to wrest the throne from him (I've seen that too often in various media, I think). And Sapphire is shaping up to be AWESOME. [emoji=guardian star size=1] He may not be his parents' favorite kid, but he's certainly mine! (Also, it was great to see Sirrush's -- previously named Nekuia's -- mother. I have some ideas in mind for the splendid guy, but nothing definite yet, so I'll be keeping an eye on his parents for inspiration for now. :D)

I'm glad you liked it! And I'm glad I waited until today to write it because I was far too tired to do it any justice yesterday!

I have way too much fun with Quartz and Banella's kids! I didn't think I'd fall in love with them all the way that I did!

I honestly can't wait to see what you do with Sirrush! I thought you would appreciate the mention of his mother! I hope to bring her back a couple more times this arc, but with all the dragons I'm juggling it depends on if there are any other updates where she fits!

The forest had been far too thick to travel by airship, so they had docked it with an old friend of Pyrite's on the edge of The Sea of a Thousand Currents. They had to make the rest of the journey by foot, as Eclipse's wing had not yet healed enough for flight. Eclipse lead the way with Plagueheart, who was slicing away bramble vines to clear a path. Pyrite trailed behind, keeping an eye out for anything that may wish to attack the traveling dragons, followed by Quaid, who was growing very weary of their journey and had begun to complain relentlessly. Eclipse had to bite her tongue to stop herself from snapping. After all, she was tired too, and she was not as accustomed to walking for extended periods of time as her wildclaw companions. The problem was, she couldn't quite remember where to find her old clan. She had never exactly left it before, and even if she had, she was sure the growth of the forest would have rendered her directions useless. Still, even that didn't excuse the fact they had been traveling over a month and seen neither hide nor hair of her old clan, or any moon warriors. "Do you see anything familiar yet?" Plagueaheart asked. Even she was growing impatient. "No," Eclipse sighed. "I'm sorry." "I'm thinking if we don't find it by the end of the day, we turn around and consider this a lost cause." Pyrite piped up. The thought sent a shock of anxiety through Eclipse. Going back would mean she failed in her mission, and her friends back in Windkeep Tower were depending on her. "I think Pyrite has a point, as much as I hate to admit it." Plagueheart sighed. "You hate what now?" Pyrite shot back, though it was difficult to tell if his offense was feigned or genuine. "If Windkeep Tower is in the hands of Quartz, wasting time in the Tangled Wood is getting us nowhere," Plagueheart continued. "The more we wait, the more he's going to dig his slimy talons into Windkeep Tower and bleed it dry, destroying everyone's families and livelihoods in the process. That greedy snake cares for nothing but himself, always has, always will. And he never cares who he brings down with him." Pyrite and Quaid joined in to grumble about Quartz, their favourite subject to complain about, while Eclipse trudged on in silence. Eventually, night fell and they took shelter in a cave. Eclipse could feel her eyelids grow heavy the moment she plunked down to rest. Plagueheart, Pyrite and Quaid also looked exhausted as they slumped down around the stone walls, not even caring as they pushed aside heavy chains. The group was so lethargic nobody thought to mention dinner for at least an hour, and by that point, nobody could be bothered to get up. Not even their growling stomachs was a motivation to get up and set up a proper camp. Eclipse suddenly felt very weak, she hadn't felt this drained since- That was when it hit her. "Guys! We're close! We're really really close!" Eclipse forced herself to stand up on shaky legs, and glanced around the cave. It looked as though no one had truly rested here since she was locked up within it's chains, and it was undeniably the same prison Kipling rescued her from. "Whatever it is, we can go looking in the morning." Quiad yawned. "I just want to sleep for a thousand years." "No, we need to go now." Eclipse said urgently. "This cave saps your energy and elemental power, it was meant to eliminate the enemies of the clan. We've already rested here too long." It was in this cave that she lost her ability to summon the lunar blade. "Well, when you put it that way," Quaid said, getting to his feet. "We better get moving then." Everyone was in agreement. They would have to wait a little bit longer for their rest. The clan was deserted. The fire truly had devastated everything. Every building that had once held the very dragons Eclipse had grown up with and shared everything with was nothing but charcoal. What structures still remained were overgrown with thick, thorny vines, obviously nourished by the ash that settled on the ground. If there were any clues here Eclipse would be very, very lucky. "And you're sure this is the right place?" Plagueheart asked. "Of course. I'd know it anywhere." Eclipse breathed, still in shock at the way her old home lay in ruin. "It seems a bit... deserted." Pyrite commented. Eclipse had thought long and hard about what she would do when she returned to her clan. There were so many angry words she wanted to have with the elders, she wanted to show them that what they did was wrong and that they couldn't get away with it. If she had to, she wanted to tear is down stone by stone, and build it into something better. But now that she saw the destruction, the ruin, all she could truly feel was an immense sense of loss. Her anger faded, and all that was left was a wave of emotion. It was as if everything, the betrayal of her clan turning on her, the hurt of the dragons who raised her wishing her dead, the grief of jumping cycles into the future and leaving everything she knew behind, came crashing down on her at once. She couldn't help it, she broke down crying. "Is- is she okay?" She could hear Quiad whisper to Pyrite. Pyrite just stared as if he wanted to comfort her, but wasn't sure if he should. Plagueheart, however, took the step and placed a hand on Eclipse's shoulder. The moon warrior looked up, hardly able to see through the tears, into the face of the older wildclaw. She sniffed and wiped the water from her eyes. That was when she saw it. Plagueheart's bright green gaze, usually so sharp and fiery, now looked deep and sorrowed. It was as if Eclipse was looking at a reflection of her own pain. "I'm not going to ask what happened here, or what's happened to you, because that's none of my business. If you want to talk about it, go ahead, but I'm not going to push." Plagueheart said, her to-the-point tone catching Eclipse off guard. "I just want to say there is no shame in feeling what you are feeling, and it doesn't make you weak. We've all had our moments of tears, we all have out own pain. Every dragon has their burden to bear, and sometimes it becomes too much. Let it out, and when you're done, you can pick yourself up and carry on, because that's what you have to do. It's what everyone has to do. But there's no shame in needing to stop and feel every once in a while." "She's right." Pyrite agreed. "For once." He added, raising his eyebrows. "You know full well that earlier I was referring to hating having to give up on her quest, not hating that you were right!" Plaguheart snapped back. "Or so you say." Pyrite said, smirking. "My parents are idiots." Quaid grumbled. "Hey, we heard that!" Pyrite said, feigning offense. "You better be careful with what you say, little tiger." "Dad! You told me you wouldn't call me that anymore!" Quiad protested. "I'm not a kid anymore!" While the family joked and squabbled, breaking the tension that had been hanging over them the past week, Eclipse began to walk around and examine the ruins. She wanted to honor those who went before her, even if they had been uptight and controlling. It was still a part of her life, and she needed to say goodbye, to let go. Just as she ran her finger over a charred wall, however, her talons hit indents she had not previously noticed. Curious, she swept aside a curtain of ivy and saw the words "Deus Ex Machina" carved into the wall, next to a door that most certainly had not been there before. "Son of a-" Eclipse muttered, feeling anger surge through her once more. That imp was the whole reason she was on this journey, because he couldn't give her a proper sword. She looked back briefly. Satisfied the family of wildclaws was preoccupied with their conversations, Eclipse slipped inside, ready to have a few good words with Silas. ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @Alwaid @zzzhorses @Amezrou @ScrivenerRook @Kizzan @clarax @lilastar @tigressRising @Disillusionist @Aetherstorm @rainphee @RiaFire11 @Tirtouga678 @catmeow1 @ShinyDecidueye @AlchemyFox ----- It's been a long week and I'm exhausted so I couldn't help but vent some of my feelings into these characters, who I'm sure would be feeling much the same after traveling for so long with no sign of what they are looking for. @Petall Caught up on all the entries I've been missing~ First, if you are wondering where Yaara got off to, he's with me. It was a very complicated subterfuge, involving a... large silver and bright orange Guardian... that sparkles... flying over and picking him up. We... we're not good at being subtle over here. Second, I'm low-key shipping Eclipse and Quaid. No real reason, I just like their dynamic together... She's a moon-warrior from the past, and he's an idiot. They're PERFECT TOGETHER[emoji=fae tongue size=4] Third, that moment where Kipling goes blep-brained because of Rori... classic cinnamon roll. And finally... I'm glad to hear Yaara has been taken to safety, even if Asclepias is not the most subtle of captors. Xinskarr and Xaiya will be relieved to know one of their clutch is safe from Quartz, they hope he settles into his new clan nicely!

I honestly felt I didn't have enough blep-brain moments and realized I don't have very many obvious romantic relationship building moments, so I'm glad I have the opportunity with Rori and Kipling!

You know, if Quartz wanted to ensure the loyalty of all his children, he should spend time with all of them.

@Petall Another great update! I really liked a lot of things here -- the way the family squabbles is pretty fun, and it was also interesting to see Eclipse's reaction to her old home. To tell you the truth, I was a bit wary of her when she was first introduced, because she seemed dangerously impetuous. But she's really grown, and it's been nice to get to know her better over the last several updates.

That Silas is in soooooo much trouble. xDDD

Eclipse has ended up being quite different than I originally intended her to be, and I think a big part of that is that I ended up making her younger than she was probably intended to be when her bio was written, as well as throwing her in with Kipling and his crew!

That he is!

Xinskarr asked his mate anxiously. "The Scribes will take Yaara." Xaiya confirmed, rolling up the letter that had just arrived. "Great. That just leaves Yachid and Yuu." Xinskarr said, looking more relaxed. "We'll find a place for them, don't worry." Xaiya sighed. It hurt, the thought of sending her children away to other clans, but Windkeep Tower was not the place for them to have a proper childhood. Growing up underground might be fine for Earthborn dragons, but Windborn children needed the open skies and a breeze in their face. They would not thrive in hiding, Xaiya accepted that. She understood it. But it did nothing to ease the loss than sat heavy in her chest, making it hard to breathe. Xinskarr began to make preparations for the meeting where they would hand over their youngest son. Xaiya did her best to join in, but she felt as though her heart was being ripped in two. She looked at Xinskarr, trying to read his face. Did he feel the same way as she did? Xaiya could tell from his hurried movements that he was anxious, but was his anxiety from giving up a child, or was it from the danger the other two were still in? She couldn't tell. Eventually, she just couldn't focus anymore. Leaving her mate to finish the packing and planning, she went to go find her children. If they were really going, and they truly should if they were going to thrive, she wanted to spend as much time with them as she could before they went. She blinked sleepily. It couldn't me morning yet, could it? She could hear the familiar murmur of her parents voices above her, but she was still half asleep and couldn't make out any specific words. It was then that Xaiya noticed her daughter blinking sleepily at her. "Mama, what are you doing with Yaara?" Yuu asked. Her question cause Yachid to stir beside her. Her brother stretched out and kicked her as he settled back into the nest. Yuu glared at him then looked back at her mother. Something didn't feel right. "Yaara's going to go live in a new clan." Xaiya explained, her eyes filled with such immense sadness that Yuu couldn't help but run over to her leg and hug it tightly. "Why? Doesn't he like us?" Yuu asked. Confusion filled her mind. Why couldn't her brother stay here with them? "He loves you very much, and we love him very much, but you all should grow up in homes where you can see the sky and play with dragons your own age." Xaiya told her daughter. "Does that mean we're going too?" Yuu asked, feeling numb. She didn't want to leave her mama and dad. She wanted to stay here, together, with her family. "Your dad and I are looking into places for all of you, where you will be safe and happy. You'll make lots of new friends and have so many fun adventures!" Her mama's tone sounded light and happy, but her eyes betrayed a different emotion. "I wanna stay with you! I'm not going anywhere!" Yuu insisted. "Hey kiddo, why don't you get back to sleep, you're going to wake your brothers." Xinskarr said, gently guiding his daughter back into the nest. "Mama and I will be back before you know it, and we'll have another fun day tomorrow!" Yuu nodded and obeyed, slowly slinking back into the nest. Her tail and wings dragged on the ground and her head hung low. She didn't understand the whirlwind of emotions within her right now, but she knew that it hurt, and that she didn't want things to change. Her parents both gave her a kiss on the head and flew off. As soon as they were gone, Yuu climbed out of the nest again and stared out of the crack in the wall out at the open ocean. She knew she wouldn't be able to sleep without her brother, and her head was pounding with questions. She wondered where she would end up. The world was so big, her mama and dad said there was so much more than she could see out. They had told her stories of the 11 flights, each ruled by their own element. The thought of leaving scared her beyond belief. But if Yaara could do it, then so could she. She would have to be brave. But Yuu didn't feel brave. Eventually, she shivered in the breeze coming in from the sea, and she returned to the warmth of the nest. She closed her eyes and tried to sleep, but tears rolled down her cheeks and sobs wracked her body. It was a long time before she fell asleep again. "Do you think we made the right choice?" Xaiya asked her mate, leaning her head on his shoulder. The couple had just returned from handing over their son, and were now curled in the nest around their remaining two hatchlings. They were fast asleep again. The couple were whispering in hushed tones, too quiet to wake the sleeping babies. "I don't know." Xinskarr whispered, betraying his doubt for the first time. "But it has to be, right? They can't grow up like this, and I can't watch them die if he- if we don't-" He trailed off, too emotional to finish his thoughts. Xaiya nodded. "It's scary, not knowing what's going to happen in this war." She agreed. "But do you think we really need to send away all of them? It was hard enough giving up Yaara. Isn't it enough to know just one or two is safe?" "It scares me so much, thinking about anything happening to them." Xinskarr admitted. "I though the fear would go away after they hatched, but its only increased. I need to know that they are safe." "You know, anything can happen to them out there too. Sornieth isn't entirely safe, and it's impossible to predict the future no matter what we choose." Xaiya pointed out. "It's true Windkeep Tower isn't as safe as it once was, but we can make it that safe again. Isn't that what we're fighting for?" Xinskarr didn't answer. Xaiya knew he was thinking hard. "I just want to see them grow up. They are our children, Xinskarr, and we can't just leave them all because times are tough and we are scared." Xaiya reminded him. Xinskarr stared down at the sleeping hatchlings, his eyes focused on Yuu. Xaiya knew her mate had a soft spot for their daughter. She replayed her conversation with the tiny wildclaw earlier that night. She didn't understand why any of this was happening, none of them did. They were all far too young to learn about the dark nature of the clan in which they had been born and the fight their parents were giving to restore it to its former glory. "It breaks my heart too." Xinskarr's voice cracked with emotion as he spoke. "Let's keep one. One to protect, one to remind us of what we are fighting for." "Thank you." Xaiya sighed, but her anxiety was not yet relieved. If they were keeping one, the question remained, which of the two would they choose to stay? How could they ever choose one child over another? "Let's talk about this more in the morning." Xinskarr suggested, settled down deeper into the nest. Xaiya nodded and sighed, sinking into the nest next to him and resting her head over his neck. The family fell asleep, their remaining children between them. But as Xaiya drifted off, she couldn't help but wonder how Yaara was doing, where he was safe, and whether he'd enjoy his life in his new clan. ----- ----- @CleverDual @Alwaid @zzzhorses @Amezrou @ScrivenerRook @Kizzan @clarax @lilastar @tigressRising @Disillusionist @Aetherstorm @rainphee @RiaFire11 @Tirtouga678 @catmeow1 @ShinyDecidueye @AlchemyFox ----- I was going to jump right into Eclipse with Silas for today's chapter, but I woke up to a wonderful message from @AlchemyFox with some lore that had been written for Yaara after his purchase and it inspired me to write this!
