What Is Night of the Nocturne?
Night of the Nocturne (NotN) is the biggest FR event of the year occurring during December and lasting two weeks. This year, 2024 it starts the 22nd of December at 6am FR time. You can check when events start and finish on the Events Calendar.
General lore summary - during the longest nights of the year, Nocturnes take flight over Sornieth, leaving strange chests in their wake. Inside these chests are a range of goodies - new and old NotN apparel, familiars, scenes, vistas, Nocturne breed change scrolls, genes, and most importantly, Unhatched Nocturne Eggs will all drop from them!
From a player perspective, it's a massive money-making event and we're all slaves to dragon capitalism. All prep players do is to get as many Strange Chests as possible. These are Strange Chests v

An odd dusky chest that rocks eerily back and forth of its own volition. Something about it does not sit well with you, but you still totally want to open it.

PREPARING
Coliseum
Coli Team
This is your biggest one. If you want to go hard out for NotN you'll need some semblance of a coli team. You don't have to bust out a bunch of lvl 25s to be successful, but it's certainly helpful to have at least one. Higher levels finish battles faster. During the event, the coliseum will gain additional enemies and while all enemies have a chance at dropping a strange chest, NotN exclusive enemies have an increased chance of doing so. These exclusive enemies will be in every venue so it doesn't matter which one you choose and that is why you don't need a lvl 25 to be successful. In fact lower venues are best because you clear them faster. Higher venue enemies have a higher chance of dropping chests but you trade off for longer battles and potentially refreshing more often.
If you don't have a team, here are some useful guides for leveling up and statting your dragons! Another tip - Frigidfin always occurs about a week before NotN so I recommend taking advantage of the XP boost it gives to level your dragons faster.

Updated Dragon Leveling Guide! by EeveeDream.
Step by step leveling from scratch and statting your dragons as you go. Save yourself that Tincture of Dissolution! This guide is the updated version of Culex's old leveling guide. They also cover a few other types of builds recommended for your dragons. The basic chart for levelling is at the bottom of the first post. Following posts are in more depth.

Battle Stones and Coliseum Builds by Maki
This guide is useful for tips on long coli sessions, training times, farming, what STR is recommended for each venue, what enemies might take to defeat, which element works best in what venue and so on.

Sedona Build
For if you don't have/can't afford eliminate.

Renting Lvl 25s
Some players rent out their lvl 25s for a cost. Check your Flight forums as well, they may also lend lvl 25s. You only need one, so you can carry two of your own dragons in higher levels to gain XP significantly faster. For example, you'll rocket through to level 5 in under 5 minutes in the Mire this way. You can find players in Items For Sale who may rent one to you. Please do return them.

Leveling Services
Don't want to level your dragons yourself? You can find players in Items For Sale who will level them for you at a cost.

Buy a Lvl 25!
Another option to get yourself a lvl 25 is to buy one outright from the Auction House. (Click that link, it'll take you to the lvl 25 sales). Make sure to check a dragon's stat stones in their profile first. Most dragons for sale here don't come fully statted (with things like Eliminate, Haste, Beserk, Ambush, and all that fun stuff that makes a lvl 25 work) or with their points assigned. You'll have to pick up a guide and set that up for yourself. But the grunt work has been done for you.

(Thank you to Nightwind for recommending some updated coli guides)
NotN Specific Coli Preparation
People prepare a fair bit for coli. Having a ready team is only one thing. Some players avoid doing lots of coli in the build-up to NotN to avoid the very real possibility of burning out from living there for two weeks. Ways to help ease the impact of it are to find something to distract yourself during it.

Coliseum Challenges
I'll go into more depth on these later but set yourself other challenges. Don't just go in it for the strange chests because you'll drive yourself insane seeing only what you don't get.

Stockpiling Fodder
Players will stockpile fodder - homegrown or sniped from the AH - and store them in HibDen until NotN. This is for several reasons. First, leveling them up in the coli allows you to battle with purpose and get any chest drops while you're working on it, and then exalting them gives you both treasure and maybe a strange chest. So you win on three fronts. Even if you don't level them and just save them to exalt outright, if you have 100 of them, that's 100 chances at a strange chest. If you want a certain payout you can see the average payout per level here - Exalting Treasure Payout Chart. You may also get gems or a higher amount of treasure based on the daily exalt bonus which can be viewed in the right side column on the Home Page.

TV/Movie Binge
No joke I went through so many seasons of Supernatural while grinding in the coliseum the whole while. Find something you want to watch/rewatch and play it while in the Coliseum. Compile a YouTube playlist. Finally go through your To Watch list. It helps. I even managed to read webtoons while doing it.
Chest Drop Rates
Maki's Festival Coliseum Guide will update with statistics of what venues seem to be dropping the most chests per hour/battle so if you're curious you can check that out. Generally, Bamboo Falls is pretty good. They also list what enemies are in what area and drop what.
Strange Chests aren't the only things that drop though. There's a variety of items that also drop during dailies and from NotN exclusive enemies in coli venues. Do NOT turn the food items into food points - but more on that later. I'll go into detail about venues for drops further down in Tips & Tricks.
Non-Coli Players
Some people just don't like it or don't have the time for it. Perfectly understandable. If you're a player like this, there are now several options available to you. Jump down to the Dailies section for that information. Or, you can find the Coli grinding services offered in Items For Sale where you can pay other players either by hour or battle to grind in a coli venue of your choice. You receive all drops. It'll be more expensive during NotN. You can also make your own post about it if you don't want to find people.
Dailies
Rule 1! Keep your clan energy above 80%!! Extra gathering turns are only granted to those who meet this threshold for at least three days. Another bonus is you gain 15% more battle XP.
Rule 2! On the day of the event do not do your dailies right after rollover. Wait until the event officially launches at 6:00 to do them or you won't receive any of the bonuses and it's a day's essential dailies wasted.
As of about 2022 Flight Rising Staff implemented a new mechanism that allows you to gain event drops from daily activities. Nesting Grounds (hatching and starting), Gather Items, Trading Post dailies, and familiar bonding all yield NotN items. Strange Chests and event items will drop from your dailies just like they do for Flight Fests and micro-holidays like Frigidfin so if you're not into coli or only want a casual chance, just log in every day and do those. If you want to be more hardcore, you can bond with every familiar you own every day. As far as prep goes for this I've been hunting down cheap/common familiars that I don't have so I can bond more. And take the familiars off your dragons in HibDen because you can't bond with them there. There's a two-screen method to make bonding a little bit easier but if you've got a lot it's still very tedious. The method for that can be found here - Fast 3-click Familiar Bonding!
Trading
This doesn't just refer to the Trading Post. In preparation for this, I stop hoardselling my items and let them stockpile a couple of weeks before the event. You could choose to never hoardsell throughout the year but I like easy cash.
Crim
During this event, if Crim wants something and it's not utterly ridiculous, she gets it. Check those trades every hour. If you don't have the item she wants, you can look it up in the Game Database, figure out where it's from and either buy it cheap or see if it drops from the coliseum and try to get it for free. (Don't give her things like Eliminate. No matter what you might get in return that's so not worth it). Rinse repeat.
Swipp
To any returning old players - As of 2022, Swipp is no longer your go-to for trading event items for strange chests and I'll go into that more under Grand Exchange. Swipp trades are the same scenario as Crim. I tend to buy up on some of the cheap one-item trade materials in advance - Broken Bottles I'm looking at you - to mass trade when that trade comes on. If you want to be pinged when that happens there's a thread where you can sign up for certain trades here - Swipp Swap Pinglist Discussion Thread. Or just check Swipp obsessively for whenever the trades change. When you trade with Swipp he might drop items.
Grand Exchange
Higgen's Hollow will be open in the Grand Exchange. Most importantly, he offers trades for Strange Chests. Higgens offers a steady trade option whenever you want. Those extra items that drop alongside Strange Chests? Those are your trade materials. So don't hoardsell them or convert them to food points. Save 'em and trade 'em. Certain monsters in certain venues drop specific items. Those items are:
[item=Leaf Insect][item=Chameleon][item=Living Stones][item=Lakebottom Flounder]
[item=Cuckoo][item=Giant Swallowtail Caterpillar][item=Bee Orchid][item=Flying Gurnard]
[item=Multi-Lens Magnifier][item=Mirror][item=Night Flame][item=Nocturne Puppet]
[item=Crystal Ball][item=Hourglass][item=Leporidae Guise][item=Weathered Grimoire]
The specific numbers for trades are as follows:

Image from NotN 2022
Higgens offers trades for other items than Strange Chests. You can find a list of those down in the next segment, but if you're looking to get them all from start to finish this year, you'll need these items:
[item=Multi-lens Magnifier]x15 [item=Weathered Grimoire]x20 [item=Cuckoo]x20 [item=Nocturne Puppet]x18
[item=Crystal Ball]x15 [item=Hourglass]x20 [item=Night Flame]x18 [item=Leaf Insect]x20
[item=Bee Orchid]x20 [item=Lakebottom Flounder]x20 [item=Living Stones]x20
[item=Mimic Powder]x20 [item=Strange Chest]x7
[item=Vigorous Goblet]x1 [item=Serpentine Lamp]x1 [item=Four-eyed Phylactery]x1 [item=Steadfast Sweeper]x1
He also has the treasure marketplace, and gem marketplace items from previous years in unlimited numbers.
Trading Among Players
If you're not opening lots of chests you might not gain all the items available, but never fear! Items For Sale is once again your friend. Other players will also be keen to swap what they have for what they don't. Other players might want lots of extras of a certain item and are willing to trade for them too.
Baldwin Brewing
Extra NotN items may drop but only for transmutation, not for item brewing. So anything you've dropped in the pot from your hoard is transmuting and you'll gain something from it, anything you've followed a recipe for is brewing and won't drop something. Also, you can brew strange chests! This is the recipe:

Images from Prepare & Survive NoTN
If you want to brew 2x chests nonstop for the entire two weeks you'd need about 79 of each mat in the recipe. I usually brew 1x chests during the day and 2x chests while I'm sleeping, but each individual is different.
All range of other materials will be required to brew the other familiars, apparel, vista, etc and you can find those recipes under the FR NotN Wiki Page. Trust me this place is super useful. Find the item you're interested in and click the icon. It'll tell you how much it costs, what the recipe is, how it's obtained, if it's part of a bundle etc.
Note: You need to have a cauldron of level 12 to brew everything offered. Level 12 is the highest NotN exclusive recipe. Remember, just like fest skins, they're only brewable for two weeks.
Materials You'll Need
If you want to brew every single item available (including both strange chest recipes) at least once you'll need around 133.2kt and 161 hours and all of these:
[item=Green Goo]x20[item=Green Ooze]x16[item=Green Sludge]x20

Save & Make Money
Brewing costs. Buying items, services and what have you also costs. Buying exclusive marketplace items etc all cost. Make sure you save your money. The quickest way to make money every day is Glimmer & Gloom at Fairgrounds. It's a bit to wrap your head around but once you do it's easy to max out fairgrounds in like 15 minutes. To understand how to conquer G&G here's a guide - G&G Solved. Just scroll down to the fourth post on the linked page. Sell stuff on AH, exalt, etc.
Pro Tip: Buying apparel bundles is cheaper than buying the items individually.

Those extra items that drop alongside Strange Chests? Those are your trade materials. So don't hoardsell them or convert them to food points. Save 'em and trade 'em. Certain monsters in certain venues drop specific items. Those items are:

Achievements
Note: These achievements are only claimable once.
The return of the Achievements System brought with it new NotN-exclusive missions. If you're the kind of person who likes to sell their chests, if you also like achievements you might want to save some for yourself. These are as follows:

[gamedb achievement=296]
Open a Strange Chest during Night of the Nocturne

[gamedb achievement=297]
Open 10 Strange Chests during Night of the Nocturne

Open 25 Strange Chests during Night of the Nocturne

[gamedb achievement=299]
Open 50 Strange Chests during Night of the Nocturne

[gamedb achievement=300]
Open 100 Strange Chests during Night of the Nocturne

[gamedb achievement=301]
Open 250 Strange Chests during Night of the Nocturne

[gamedb achievement=302]
Have an unopened Strange Chest disintegrate into Nocturnal Dust at the conclusion of Night of the Nocturne

[gamedb achievement=592]
Purchase 1 Night of the Nocturne item from Higgins' Haunted Hollow at the Grand Exchange
Couple of things to note here - The Achievement in the system calls 'Higgins' Haunted Hollow' a 'Hoard' instead of 'Hollow'. I've edited that here. But it's the same achievement.
Second is this achievement ([gamedb achievement=302]) hurts the souls of many players, but there's a way around it. If you're not somebody to let a Strange Chest go to waste, you can buy yourself 1x Nocturnal Dust off the Auction House (AH) and that will trigger the achievement for you. Click the AH link and it'll take you straight to those listings. If you haven't done it already, I'd wait until just after the dusting date when there might be more of it going around.

Unhatched Nocturne Egg Market
The price these guys sell for has dropped in the last couple of years, and the price will drop again during NotN. Best time to buy them if you're not obtaining them yourself or want to try your hand at flipping (buying items while they're cheaper and selling for a higher price). People usually hold and sell most of them over the year when they want to cash up rather than during or just after. But, there will always be a market for them, so... I tend to list mine at the price I want them to sell for during the event and just relist them so if prices spike they might be the first to go. Also to note, if you're gunning to use the money you make from NotN to buy those more expensive items like sprites, they'll likely be more expensive during this season too because everybody uses this chance to tick off their wishlists.
[item=Unhatched Nocturne Egg]
Probability
You won't get an egg in every chest. You won't get an egg every ten chests either. The exact probability of getting an egg is currently 8% as of 2022. This may be subject to change. Last year my ratio was around 1 egg per 12 chests. That doesn't mean I got 1 egg every 12 chests. The first day it took me more than fifty chests to get my first egg. You'll have bad days. Prepare for that. Take breaks.
Selling Chests
If eggs aren't your thing there's decent money to be made in selling the chests themselves. They vary from around 15g-30g per chest. (Don't quote me on this, gambling for egg go brr so I haven't done this. Anybody more experienced in it is welcome to give some advice and I'll add it in). You can very easily make around the same amount from selling chests as from selling eggs.
The real gamble for opening the chests is the eggs, but it is also how you get the new stuff - but during NotN it might be dirt cheap or easy to trade for, so the gamble really is the eggs inside. Let's say eggs are around 250g each. Chests can sell for as low as 15-20g to as high as 30g depending on the period of NotN. Take my lot from last year, I opened all my chests and got 277 eggs, so let's say I made 69,250g. If I'd sold the 3550 that I'd opened for all that at 20g each I'd have made 71kg. But in saying that I also make money from selling whatever else is in the chests. So yeah, there's merit in it.
Note: The egg market tends to drop every year. My first NotN they sold for 300g each, my next 250g, and this year, they're selling for around 230/240g. So that's something to factor in if you're calculating how many you need to get for a specific goal.
Selling Items
Depending on how many chests you open, you're gonna wind up with a lot of stuff. One item per chest. In general, excess items are great for the brewing pot. The new apparel, or popular old apparel, such as the flame and ghastcrown sets will always sell well throughout the year. Prices for these, much like the eggs, take a hit during NotN when things are in abundance, but they generally rise again after a few months. Even if they're only selling for 5g when you're selling a lot of them it racks up. Although when it comes to things like the vistas (Spidered Seat in particular) their prices never really go up. Probably because you can only bind them once and then use them endlessly.
Whether you choose to sell your strange chest trade items is up to you, there will be people who buy them during the event. Given that the trades aren't balanced in number, players will want to balance out what they're missing. However, there's a strategy to that in which you pick your venue according to what drops where (jump down to Tips & Tricks for that). Any NotN trade items you have left over should be saved for the next NotN. Stick them in your vault or lock them so you don't accidentally sell or convert them. Mimic powder, however, you'll pick that up really quickly in the coliseum so you can probably hoardsell that for a quick buck. (Note: My stats from 2023 NotN for Mimic Powder picked up this year: 5061 - Hoardsold for 227,745t)

Current Items

Outdated NotN Items
The only items no longer available are the Festival Bears and their doppelgangers. The festival bears themselves were originally Fest Familiars but were reintroduced alongside their recolors during NotN but were eventually removed from the pool and can now only be obtained via Joxar's Spare Inventory Crate.

Achievements Note: These achievements are only claimable once.
The return of the Achievements System brought with it new NotN-exclusive missions. If you're the kind of person who likes to sell their chests, if you also like achievements you might want to save some for yourself. These are as follows:
Swag! (Night of the Nocturne) Purchase 1 Night of the Nocturne item from Higgins' Haunted Hollow at the Grand Exchange
Couple of things to note here - The Achievement in the system calls 'Higgins' Haunted Hollow' a 'Hoard' instead of 'Hollow'. I've edited that here. But it's the same achievement.
Second is this achievement (The Expiration Date Wasn't a Suggestion) hurts the souls of many players, but there's a way around it.

Unhatched Nocturne Egg
Dragon Eggs
A tiny Nocturne hatchling grows within. The thick, armored shell makes it unclear what elemental alignment it has taken.
0

Challenges
Staying motivated during NotN can be hard for some people. Or incredibly frustrating when you're not getting strange chests like you want to and sometimes the RNG Gods seem to only give you stuff when you're not looking for it. Thus, there's a variety of challenges you can do to keep your motivation boosted. Of course, it's not limited to just this list. If you have any good challenges I'll put them up.
Coli Challenges:
Coli Bingo
Select a venue(s) and decide on some items. You keep going until you receive whatever number of each item you've set. If you don't want to devise them yourself, there's usually a few threads that pop up in Quests & Challenges or maybe some other forums where people have made up a bingo. You can complete those. Some ask for those bingo items in exchange for badges or profit.
Familiar Finding
Go up through each venue until you obtain every familiar it offers. Including or excluding bosses is up to you.
HibDen Cross Off
Do the same but for your HibDen challenges. Take the time to make that space for any eggs you'll want to hatch with all the eggs running around.
99x Chests
If you want to go hardcore. Not sure how feasible getting through all the venues during the event is but 99x Strange Chests (a full stack) per venue. You move on once you have the stack. Maybe you'll choose not to sleep, who knows.
Item Drops
Go until you get no drops in the item window from a venue. Or, go until an item of your choice drops.
Swipp & Crim
Find out what Swipp and Crim want and then Coli in the venue those items drop in. Try to match the trade before the time runs out. For example, if Swipp is trading for branches, go to Blooming Grove until you have enough Preserved Petals for the trade.
TV Synced
One venue per episode. New episode new venue.
Level Up
Level up a dragon(s) to lvl 25. You're in coli anyway, so why not make use of the time?

Swipp & Crim
Find out what Swipp and Crim want and then Coli in the venue those items drop in. Try to match the trade before the time runs out. For example, if Swipp is trading for branches, go to Blooming Grove until you have enough Preserved Petals for the trade.
TV Synced
One venue per episode. New episode new venue.
Level Up
Level up a dragon(s) to lvl 25. You're in coli anyway, so why not make use of the time?
Tips & Tricks
Do you have anything you think might be useful and want to share? Leave a message and I'll add it in :)
Simple Coliseum Tips
Working in a venue around the same level as your dragons usually means you'll have to refresh or die a few times. On a computer, it's hard to hit that refresh button in time. Use F5 to shortcut refresh your browser.
If you're using keyboard controls instead of a mouse, you can rearrange your battle stones without breaking them. In the Abilities & Stats block, at the bottom of your stones chart is a settings button. Use that to rearrange your battle stones.
To turn on keyboard controls, on the Coliseum Page click the game controller icon at the bottom of the screen and select keyboard.

I don't know how big a tip this is, but I always forget that the extra mimic opponents make the coli harder, particularly in the higher venues. At least it seems that way for me. I go into my usual venues with my usual teams to level some fodder and get wiped out the first few rounds until I figure things out again.
In my opinion, in the higher venues with a Lvl25 team, scratch + eliminate usually does the trick if nothing else. Otherwise Rally + Eliminate for something quicker if it works.
Best Venue?
Is there a best venue to be in? That depends on your goals. Paying attention to Maki's guide for what seems to be dropping the most strange chests is one way to go about it. But if you also want to pick up what you need for strange chest trades then here are some details about that.
Certain enemies drop certain items, and they're spread across different venues. This is what drops what and where (say that ten times fast).

Referring back to the trades list and matching it to what drops where, there's only one venue that drops both of a trade set's items in a higher concentration and that's Volcanic Vents. It drops both Hourglasses and Giant Swallowtail Caterpillars in high concentration.
Secondary venues would be Arena and Crystal Pools. While they don't have both trade items in higher concentration, they do drop the more 'expensive' item in a higher concentration and the lesser item is also present. There are only two venues that have this. If that sounds confusing I'll explain a little more.
Chameleon
Meat
It is said that chameleons are great for determining a dragon's mood. Wrap one around your finger, watch the color change, then have a snack!

Night Flame
Trinkets

These items make up a trade. Chameleon is the more expensive item, requiring 42 per trade and drops from two enemies in Arena. Night Flame is the lesser item only costing 18 per trade and drops from only one enemy in Arena. Thus the one you need more of has a higher chance of encountering so in theory may keep what you gain in balance for steadier grinding.
Leaf Insect

Plant-eating dragons are unpleasantly surprised when they end up with a mouthful of these little guys.

The same is the case for these two, but in Crystal Pools. This trade requires 42 Leaf Insects and 18 Mirrors. Both drop in this venue with Leaf Insects at a higher concentration.
So do with that information what you will. All food items are the higher requirement in a trade.
Brewing Strategy

I've heard a lot of people say for brewing, it's actually more efficient to transmute stuff during the day when you're on a lot and then start chest brewing at night when you won't be able to be on for hours. You get a chance at strange chests just from picking up from the cauldron, so all those 30-minute chances add up compared to having a guaranteed two after multiple hours.
Look After You
Nobody likes hearing the 'Make sure you game in moderation' speech but Merry Christmas. I'm not quite here to tell you that knowing that I'll also be fully indulging in the event more than is probably deemed healthy... But you do need to take care of yourself.
Remember to sleep! You can't keep getting chests if you're falling asleep at your computer. Brew bigger Baldwin recipes overnight.
Hydrate! If you're the kind of person who only drinks if it's right in front of you then fill up a couple of drink bottles before you start and leave them in view.
Rest your wrists. Do not give yourself carpal tunnel by going too hard and too long in the coliseum I stg. There are lots of ways you can change it up. Set up the keyboard shortcuts and use those for a good while then swap it up and use your mouse with the other hand. Switch to a cellphone or a tablet and use the touch screen. Use a stylus pen or something. Change the types of micro movement you do to save your wrists. Remember to stretch them. Wear a brace if you have to. Don't ruin yourselves completely over a dragon game.
Go outside and touch grass or something. Hug your family. Don't neglect them during the holiday if you're close to them. You can even still play the game while doing so - watch a movie with them while you coli. Go say hi to your pets.
Change location. Make yourself do a lap of the house or something. Change from your bed to the desk, the lounge, the kitchen tabletop, or a cafe. Make yourself move, don't stay hunched up in the same spot. Treat it like studying.
Burnout is absolutely a big thing. Last year I got super burnt out and didn't touch the game for half a year. In fact, I've only been back for like two weeks. Don't ruin your enjoyment of the game over this one event. Don't spend the entire time going after chests. Hatch an egg and scry it. Check in to forums and see what's going on and how other people are doing - lament with them, share what you've gotten, curse the RNG Gods, enjoy the FR community, and have a good NotN! Find yourself a NotN Buddy - I've got one!
I mass open at the end of the day just before rollover to start winding down.
Mental Prep!
Say it with me: You won't get an egg every ten chests. You certainly won't get an egg every chest.
Well, if you're super duper lucky you might. Last year it took me more than fifty chests to get my first egg. Over time my totals evened out to around 1 egg per 12 chests. The current drop rate for eggs is 8% and that might change this year, we don't know until it happens. You can absolutely be frustrated with your odds, in fact, some days, you will be. Make your goals and strive for them and have fun, but take care of your mind and body so you can still enjoy reaching them. Be realistic about your goals, start small, and next year aim to beat them. Don't get overwhelmed by what everybody else is doing, especially if it's your first NotN.
