Ash's parents were farmers, and his parents' parents were farmers, and so on down the generation. No one ever asked what he would do with his life; they all knew.

They were wrong.

As soon as he reached maturity, Ash surprised everyone by taking off for the nearest big city, leaving only a note to let his family know he hadn't just vanished into thin air. It was a shockingly drastic act for someone who had always seemed so steady, so methodical. Heading for the big city with no money, no connections, and no valuable skills -- Ash's story could have easily ended in tragedy.

But it didn't. Instead, Ash found himself in the right place at the right time to offer a needed hand to a reputable smith. Impressed by the young mirror's capable and generous nature, the smith offered him an apprenticeship, and he showed great talent -- such great talent that he rose quickly in the smiths' guild until he finally scored a position with a Lightsmith. And that, as they say, was that.

When he completed his training, Ash's unexpected wanderlust struck again, and he set out on a long and wandering journey to learn new smithing and Lightsmithing techniques from different areas. On this journey, he met Xanna, bitter and haunted by the war she'd just left behind. Whether Ash sought her company out of infatuation or decided to comfort her due to his caring nature and came to love her as he did so, he will not say. But it was his idea that they become partners, in every sense of the word, and it was his idea that they have children to carry on their work.

Ash's children will be Lightsmiths, and his children's children may be Lightsmiths, and that would be just fine with him.
