Biography

Borealis' litter was full of odd dragons with animal friend Pinkapi, blood hungry mirror Silence and Borealis himself who fell in love with snow after winds brought it from the south. He liked snow so much he didn’t even care about other dragons or anything else and ended up being left behind with his development. He barely knew how to speak when his father Kaamos who had been trying to control Silence’s hunting instincts asked him to leave the hatchery as he was getting too old.

Borealis left the nests and having nothing to do as snow had melted he tried to befriend his clan mates. He though didn’t know how to interact with them having not really spent time with others when in the hatchery and they left him alone very soon. Borealis was confused by that and tried again with somewhat same results. He tried to figure out what he was doing wrong and tried different methods but there was always something off and he was left alone.

Borealis couldn’t figure out what he did wrong and not being able to see fault in his methods he started to wonder if he was the problem. Maybe he was somehow different. It was true he was bad with almost everything, and others maybe avoided him because of that or maybe it was something else. Trying to figure out what was wrong with him was mentally draining and after weeks having tried to get some friends he felt like not even trying.

Some time after that the clan moved out but Borealis knowing not many would miss him stayed in the old lair lying in his nest. He was alone some time before Abele returned to the Starwood lair and didn’t seem too happy about finding Borealis in there. She wanted him to leave but he didn’t know where the new lair was and so the rude pearlcatcher escorted him there not hiding how annoyed she was.

In the new lair Borealis found himself a secluded place to be in. He didn’t make himself a nest as he didn’t know how to do that and instead slept on tree roots. He did not expect anyone to care about him and was surprised when Pinkapi came to visit him. She didn’t remember his name but knew him as her brother and was curious if he was alright. Borealis not believing she could help him said he was fine but Pinkapi didn’t believe him and demanded her brother to tell what was wrong.

After a long silence Borealis gave up and told that he felt flawed and unwanted and didn’t know what to do. Pinkapi assured Borealis he was not flawed any more than others but Borealis didn’t believe that and blamed his sister to be a liar. He attempted to leave but pack of familiars that was with Pinkapi stopped him. His sister asked him to come with her to live with her and though Borealis didn’t really want he didn’t see a way out of the situation and followed Pinkapi to her nest.

Pinkapi’s nest was large but very messy as she shared it with few dozens of familiars. Still, there was plenty of space for Borealis to make a bed for himself. He didn’t really feel like doing anything and just lied on his bed. Pinkapi’s familiars circled around him trying to get him up but Borealis just hid his head making sure he didn’t care. They continued that for few nights till one of Pinkapi's ice familiars offered him a little bit of snow. At first Borealis tried to ignore that but eventually he picked it up and pressed it against his cheek. It reminded him of his childhood when he had been happy without feeling useless.

Upon raising his head Borealis noticed the familiars had created a large pile of snow and seemed to wait him to join. He was reluctant even when Pinkapi came to encourage him but eventually he came to the pile. He wanted to lie on the pile pretending he wouldn’t exist but felt like he shouldn’t do that when everyone was watching. Carefully he picked some of the white wonder and started to shape it with his hand when Pinkapi placed a snowball on top of his head smiling warmly. Borealis picked it and threw it to his sister’s face following with the ball he had been making and she answered with more balls and Borealis started to feel happy.

Borealis stayed with Pinkapi playing with her familiars in snow some of them created. She had asked him to not think about his flaws but to focus on feeling happy and Borealis didn’t need to be asked twice. He spent his time with familiars barely interacting or even seeing other dragons. Pinkapi spent her time somewhere else but Borealis didn’t care about details and just enjoyed his time.

Borealis lived with his sister for months not really bothering himself with interactions with other dragons. One evening Pinkapi however asked him to come with her to meet a certain group. Borealis was both confused and unwilling fearing to shame himself in front of the group but Pinkapi assured that wouldn’t happen and promised to be with him. Borealis was still unsure but eventually came with his sister and few of her familiars.

They left the lair and traveled across the isle to reach the meeting place of the group. They eventually reached the group called the Starcatchers and though they were welcomed warmly Borealis felt unsure. He felt a bit annoyed when Pinkapi explained that he had some difficulties with interacting with other dragons and nervous when they started to ask him questions. Once they stopped asking they explained what his condition might be and upon hearing that Borealis was fast to claim to be actually flawed but the unfamiliar dragon told that wasn’t the case. The dragon then explained what the possible condition meant in practice and suggested they’d do some tests to see if Borealis was on the spectrum, the other evening.

Borealis was happy to not need to do any tests during the first visit as he was getting too nervous to do anything. They returned few evenings later to do some tests and repeated that few times in span of few weeks till the dragon told that Borealis was on spectrum. Borealis didn’t quite understood what it meant and the group's representative seemed to understand that. They offered a representative to move to their clan and help Borealis with his disabilities and before he was able to answer Pinkapi had already accepted that.

The tundra siblings returned few nights later and were introduced to Milla who was to become therapist to Borealis. Borealis was not sure how to behave around the spiral and stayed silent when she tried to learn to know him making Pinkapi answer in his stead. Once they returned to the lair Borealis went to his nest to play with familiars in snow fearing he might not be able to do that once his therapy started while Pinkapi showed Milla the lair.

The following evening Milla came to pick Borealis up and suggested he’d introduce his clan mates for her. Borealis was both unwilling because he knew he was bad with interaction and confused as he had assumed Pinkapi had already done that. He though had to give up when she asked so nicely and she also said Pinkapi only showed places. That made sense as she did spend a lot more time with familiars than with dragons.

They entered the main lair area Milla following Borealis as he tried to figure out who they should meet. He barely knew his clan mates and had to guess who were what. He really didn’t want to accidentally anger a leader. While Borealis was wondering who would be the best dragon to introduce Azul came to meet them. She came to meet Milla and the spirals started to talk forcing Borealis to join.

He wasn’t very good at it and he noticed making Azul feel awkward all the time though she tried to hide that. That made Borealis feel uneasy and he tried to leave but neither of them allowed. Milla explained that she noticed him to be a bit too outspoken and too focused on the topic which makes others uneasy but that was totally normal. Borealis still tried to leave but the spirals flew in front of him and Milla told they are going to practice how to talk with others and how to behave when it came to opinions. Borealis wasn’t really excited by the idea but didn’t see way out of the situation either so he stayed.

Borealis was tired after the practice and the following evening he was allowed to take a break from social interactions. Instead, once Milla came to meet Borealis she suggested they’d make him a proper nest. Borealis didn’t quite see reason in that but but accepted the suggestion after Milla suggested they could go to meet other residents instead. They went to the nest area, near the tundra wing and started to sort things out. Help from Milla was limited as she focused on observing Borealis’ work and giving tips. She said that was to help him learn.

As the nest proceed few dragons came to help Borealis and he felt how the spiral paid attention to how he behaved with them. He tried to use what the therapist had taught him night earlier but that still felt too illogical for him. Milla probably noticed that and came closer to help him and explained others his behavior if they seemed to get offended. Eventually the nest was ready and Milla asked if he wanted to do something fun as reward and he told he wanted to play snowball war with familiars and the two spent the rest of the night doing that.

After the snowball game Borealis started to get a bit more motivated to try new things knowing he would have some fun if he did well. He also started to like Milla a bit more finding her supporting both during and after their practices and overall very enjoyable company. They continued practicing different types of activities from keeping the nest and fur clean, joining gatherings and interacting with more dragons at once in different situations. Borealis hated those practices feeling always overwhelmed when ending up in such a situation but he always tried to push through easily tiring himself.

After few weeks of almost daily practices a temple the clan had been building for months was finally finished and Milla decided they’d move in there. Borealis wasn’t very excited about the idea as it wasn’t that long since he had made him his own nest but helped her anyway just in case it was a hidden practice. They made the nests near the hatchery almost next to Borealis’ father Kaamos and his friend Pilkku. Borealis listened as Milla explained how she needed to finish her studies and what problems he had to his father who promised to help his son the best he could while she studied.

Borealis was not quite sure how he was supposed to behave with his father when Milla was not giving any hints or wasn’t even in the same room. There were only three of them yet Borealis felt more uneasy than in bigger group and often waited Milla to return before joining his neighbors. Pilkku, however, pointed out that one of the main reasons why Milla had left him alone was not only to study in peace but also have him work without a support. Borealis wasn’t sure about his skills but decided to try.

Milla didn’t visit Borealis in few nights and he spent that time helping his father keep the nests clean and Pilkku’s researches organized, bringing them all some food and just talking with them. Eventually Milla came to check how he was doing and Borealis was happy to see her again. He listened as Kaamos told what they had done, how he had done and suggested that they’d visited the ice domain as a reward. Borealis had told that he liked snow during their talking sessions and was very happy when Milla accepted the idea of holiday trip to the snow region and hurried her to come pack some snack for them.

They flied to the Icefield few nights later Borealis following his father who carried Milla in his mane as he showed the way to his original home. Borealis was overwhelmed with happiness when he saw snow decorating the landscape all the way to the far horizon and felt that cold substance under his feet colder than he had expected. Upon landing he dove into the snow and after enjoying the cold for some time he started to build a castle with the help of his companions and once that was done they started a snowball war.

Borealis enjoyed his time in the ice domain and was happy to visit it again after he had managed to do some chores as part of his therapy. He was doing great but he wasn’t quite sure if that would be the case if Milla wasn’t supporting him and giving him things to do. He was shocked when she told he should start act more independent as that was the only thing he should learn left. Borealis panicked upon hearing that and when list of thing he should still learn didn’t seem to convince the spiral to change her opinion he turned his tail and walked away.

Borealis went to his nest to where he had moved after Milla had finished her studies and thought about what just happened. Borealis felt awful because of that and the following night he came back to Milla saying he might have slightly overreacted last night and apologized. Milla didn’t seem to be mad and was like the argument didn’t even happen. She still insisted that Borealis was better than what he gave himself credit for and after he denied that she suggested an easy ball game where every time another got a point the other had to say something positive about themselves. Upon hearing that Milla herself also had problems in praising herself Borealis decided to accept the challenge.

The game was simple football with only two players and they were equal in match scoring points and having to praise themselves almost as many times. They had not played for too long when Borealis, after having had to praise himself, scored a point for himself forcing Milla to tell something good about herself. After that was done she went to take the ball from a bush when Borealis heard her scream and upon coming to see what was wrong he couldn’t find her.

The ball and Milla’s glasses were on the ground and after trying to find the spiral with no success other than strong smell of fresh magic Borealis ran to his father to tell what had happened. He was panicky and Kaamos asked him to calm down before asking what had happened and where. Borealis led his father to where they had been playing telling what he knew struggling to stay calm. As they they reached the scene both of the tundras noticed a group of dragons entering the lair and after watching the odd group for some time Borealis noticed Milla with them.

Borealis forgot his father and followed the group to the temple and eventually found Milla with clan’s healers. Once they led him in Borealis asked Milla what happened and was shocked when she didn’t remember anything past of his goal and things didn’t turn better when he was told that Milla had apparently attacked few of their clan mates in some kind of crystal creature form. He denied that Milla could have done anything like that but her amnesia seemed to act against her along with other evidences.

The following nights Borealis stayed mostly with Milla listening as some of their clan mates blamed her for the attack. He wanted to defend her but his courage ran away every time someone came to bring up their distrust towards the spiral. Most vocal among them was Morgana, a guardian who no one opposed, who scared both Borealis and Milla not only because she was emotionless but she was also guardian of a leader.

The situation caused a lot of stress to Milla as she had no idea what had happened or why it had happened even fearing being cursed. Borealis didn’t know how to help Milla and luckily for him Afrodite came to help them. She took a job to help Milla recover her memories and didn’t seem to blame her. Borealis though didn’t know how he could help them and spent his time with Kaamos when Afrodite was with Milla hoping to get some advice to help her too.

After the hatchlings Kaamos had been looking after left the nests he came with Borealis to see Milla whose amnesia was not to heal despite healers' efforts. While they were there Morgana came to check Milla making sure she had not escaped. Borealis repeated that she was innocent but the guardian didn’t pay him attention and ignored Kaamos’ words as well when he tried to defend Milla too. Morgana was about to leave and Borealis having had enough of her harsh words that she said just to offend Milla ran in front of her blocking her way. He pressed his claws to the floor when he forced himself to meet guardian’s eyes when he told she blamed Milla just because she was not from the clan. Morgana watched him coldly and Borealis feared she might hit him but after a long silence she left saying nothing was sure just yet.

Borealis was tired and shook when Kaamos came closer but at the same time he felt a bit proud. His father took Borealis under his wing and said how he was proud of him. He had stopped shaking when Milla clapped telling Borealis that he could do a lot if he just dared to bother before continuing that her job seemed to be done. Borealis was sad as he didn’t want to lost Milla’s friendship but the spiral told that the end of therapy didn’t need to be end of friendship. Borealis hugged Milla before leaving her with Afrodite and exited the temple with Kaamos. He was happy having been able to outdo himself and ran to Pinkapi to tell what he had accomplished.

After the therapy Pinkapi named an ice centaur to act as Borealis' companion when dragons were out of question. Borealis had few problems with getting along with the centaur biggest contribute being lack of shared language. The two though got along the centaur being cool with Borealis' weird habits and even created some snow for him if he needed it.

Wanting to show that time with Milla had not gone to waste Borealis made a habit of helping Milla, Kaamos and Pinkapi if they needed help and joining gathering groups, usually digging and scavenging groups, if the destination was the Southern Icefield the centaur lending his hand too. With he spending that much time with other dragons with his not that great hint picking skills some of his clan mates came to share their tips for how to not get screwed over. Azul and Afrodite, occasionally, did that a lot but so did Skugga too despite she being notorious for tricking others in her games on purpose.

Life carried on rather peaceful for Borealis for a very long time until one night ugly creatures arrived out of nowhere. Both Borealis and the centaur did not like about them arriving and few nights later they drove the centaur very hostile. At first Borealis thought he had messed up badly but with every other non-dragon in the lair turning hostile about same time and Pinkapi assuring it was not him, even though she had no idea what it was, he changed to blame the creatures. He though changed the blame on Nemo when everyone else did the same. She could totally be behind that she having been the one to turn Milla into a monster that one time.

The things in the lair kept getting weirder and Borealis struggled to keep the fear from stressing him too much. Normally he would have talked to the centaur but he was very hostile and Pinkapi was too busy to eat let alone sleep. Only options left were Milla and Kaamos and Borealis preferred Milla due to she knowing how to relieve stress and Borealis visited her quite often. However, one evening when Borealis was going to visit the therapist Borealis noticed Milla gone and so was Afrodite living near Milla. At first he assumed they had gone to get something to eat but as he made his way towards the Hoard asking if anyone had seen them he was made aware of that the therapists were gone and so were the leaders.

Borealis decided to visit his father telling him that Milla and leaders were all gone and the older tundra decided to join to search for them. They had barely gotten out of the temple when earth started shaking and walls rose around the lair. The entire clan Borealis included was still confused when Shadow stepped forward declaring that she would sacrifice everyone in the lair to summon the Shade in few days. Kaamos was fast to tell he had to return to the hatchery to inform Pilkku telling Borealis to stay out of trouble as he went.

With even Kaamos gone Borealis made his way to Pinkapi who was finally able to rest the declaration having solved the mystery of hostile familiars. While she was sleeping Borealis visited their father only to find him and Pilkku gone just like Milla. However, unlike Kaamos who seemed to have been turned into a familiar Milla had actually escaped with Afrodite's first client Itameri. That though didn't turn out that great Silence having joined Shadow dragging the spiral back few evenings later.

Milla was scared as Silence dropped her in front of everyone. She tried to escape as Shadow explained showcasing what would happen to everyone who opposed them but couldn't outrun Shadow's spell the skydancer turning her into what Borealis assumed being her "monster form". Seeing Milla in Silence's teeth had scared Borealis and he was barely able to move when she was dropped on the ground. However, after he saw what they did to her he tried to approach the mages anger in his heart only to have Skugga stop him by pulling his tail. She told that he could not do anything to them and he could not do anything if the mages did something to him. She suggested him to keep his head down and act when in more opportune time.

The following evenings Borealis tried to get as little attention as possible some of his clan mates falsely claiming others were threats to have them be turned into familiars. What though was scarier was what happened when the Sun was eclipsed. A spirit wyvern appeared from the ground taking control over everyone in the lair Borealis included. When the battles started Borealis hid not wanting to get crushed by aggressive dragons. Once everything started to calm down he came out of his nest in where he had hid and volunteered to join the group sent to look for Milla.

After the transformation Milla was, most likely under a mind control spell, sent to guard the wood around the lair to make sure no one escaped. No one knew what had happened to the spells after Shadow and her sidekick Sapny had escaped and with Milla being hard to find Borealis hoped the spells had reverted and she was just hiding somewhere confused.

Two nights later Milla had still to be found and Borealis had had time to visit his father in healing offices before any hints were found. Eventually scouts reported having seen weird markings on trees quite far away from the lair. As the search groups arrived to the scene they were soon able to find trail fitting for the monster Milla was turned into. She eventually charged toward the group Borealis' heart skipping a beat as he saw the spells had not reverted. Still, he had hope she would hear him past the spells and didn't dodge as she rammed into him.

Milla had pressed Borealis against ground he lying on his back but she seemed reluctant to actually hit and she backed down like in pain as Borealis called her. That gave the rest of the groups chance at capturing her and they were able to get her back to the lair in where the spells were reverted. She took her time to recover from the spells Borealis visiting her often to make sure she was alright. She recovered decently fast and returned to her job even faster Afrodite and Witchi needing her help with recovering from spells cast on them. Borealis helped the best he could trying to not get too embarrassed by her notions that he had gone so far since their first meeting.

Traits

Borealis is a purple tiger striped arcane tundra with pale striped lilac wings both patterns being partly covered by white crackle like patterns on his fur. He has short and silky fur and he is overall very slender looking due to lack of undercoat and can’t stand cold well because of that. His furred horns, mane and tail tuft are relatively small when compared to other tundras but his black claws are slightly bigger than others of his breed.

Borealis likes winter and snow but he doesn’t stand cold very well because of his fur and is always seen wearing wintery clothes. He rarely changes them and because of that warm temperatures tend to be hard for him but he doesn’t quite know what to wear in such a situation. His preferred clothes include a winter coat, gloves, boots, tail warmer and scarf which he uses for stimming, all pink and white in color. He also has purple bandana used to cover his ears time to time and goggles to protect his eyes. He also has small bags in where he carries his lunch and snow if he is travelling to the south with gathering groups but other than that it is often empty.

Borealis learned to speak somewhat late and he still isn’t very good with it. His speech can be fast but silent, almost mumble like, or it can be stuttering. He also doesn’t necessarily think how he should talk in certain situations and even though he had practiced that he can still come across a bit offhand and brutally honest. He has strong Finnish accent.

Borealis is somewhat naive dragon having bare minimum of somewhat childish interests. He likes snow and winter and basically nothing else. He enjoys mostly playing in, on and with snow wanting to have fun showing no interest towards more adult things. He doesn’t like reading, analyzing, studying, doing chores or chatting with other dragons about life or other dragons and often finds gossiping rude. He likes simple things not wanting to bother himself with more complex things but he is more than willing to take a job if it means he can enjoy cold.

Borealis has never been very social dragon. He didn’t care about company that much mostly because he was not very good with interactions and was somewhat shy. At the same time however he didn’t want to be alone and rejected and became depressed after he noticed his lack of interaction skills caused him to be rejected. After having gone through therapy he has grown more confident with his social skills and may spend time with others but his lack of interests usually keep him alone.

After having completed his therapy Borealis was given a wintermane minstrel to act as his company. He has rather neutral relationship with the centaur he calls Itsthe. He doesn’t hate him and actually likes him but the lack of common language is problem for both and they don’t really know what is common between them. Itsthe though is able to use ice magic and often helps Borealis during hot evenings and Borealis is very grateful for that and overall likes his kind and calm attitude.

Small pile of pink petals.

Borealis has a lot to be desired when it comes to basic skills. He can read and calculate but both actions are rather slow and he has to use his fingers to do them faster. His memory, though not the worst in the clan, is still somewhat bad and likelihood of him remembering something decreases depending on how little he cares about the topic and he doesn’t care about many. Though an arcane dragon Borealis can’t use magic much if at all and only thing that is compensating that is his decent ability to smell magic as long as it is from a fresh spell.

Borealis loves snow a lot and makes a huge number out of different variants of it. That confuses his clan mates a lot as they don't see snow that much thinking it is just an ice domain thing and don't make difference between very fresh or partly melted snow. Borealis though does having different names for fresh and wet snow even going so far that have different names based on how wet the snow is or if it has for example sand in it. He had to make up names as the language he speaks doesn't naturally have names for all those snow variants.
