I got so worried Enser was going to die! I'm so glad no one did though, its so early in the story and I'm not sure I could handle any characters dying yet (or ever for that matter)

@GrinningWolf24

The lightning strike wasn't hers, but that would have been a great idea if I had thought of it!

@MeepBoie400

Me too!!! I tried to bring some calm to the scene because no one is a high enough level for the Woodland Path yet (I haven't gone into the Coli once this pinkerlocke), so there is that.

@Tiffkaboo

Thank you! Enser is a favourite of mine.

@Disillusionist

No death streaks yet, thank goodness... I really don't want anyone to die...

That is a very good point! They would be a very difficult foe to beat!!

@Autumnus

I'm with you! I've gotten far too attached to these guys already, I don't know what I'm going to do the first time that I have to kill someone off...

It was then that he realized his mouth was open, and he shut it. Between them, Ifor groaned and stretched, wincing from the pain of her wounds. Beside her, the basilisk lay in a charred heap. Rain still fell heavily around them. Enser was never one who liked rain, but there were kind of bigger things to focus on. “Thank you,” Enser panted, not taking his eyes off the mirror. “I don’t know what we would have done without you. That’s a pretty impressive trident of yours!” “Thanks, it belonged to my brother,” The mirror explained. Enser could tell from the weight that had appeared in his shoulders as he spoke that his brother was no longer around. “I’m sorry,” Enser said sympathetically. “I’m Enser, this is Ifor. What’s your name? Are you traveling alone?” “I’m Howlite,” The mirror responded, the weight leaving his shoulders. “And I travel with my pack.” As he spoke, eight other mirrors appeared from the trees around them, obviously having come to investigate what the kurfullfle had been. They were accompanied by a soft-looking mith. “Right, a mirror pack,” Enser observed, scanning all the newcomers. “I’d forgotten that you guys do that. At any rate, I’m thankful that you’ve come to help Ifor and I. I don’t know where we’d be without you.” “You should come back to the school with us!” Ifor piped up. She still looked pretty shaken, but to her credit, she was pulling herself together fairly well. He could tell that the scratches on her back were giving her a fair bit of trouble. “Let us show you around!” Howlite glanced at his pack, and Enser watched as he began to make a number of gestures. The mirrors of the pack responded in turn. Mirrors’ cant. Enser couldn’t speak it, but it fascinated him. “We’ll come for a look,” Howlite agreed with a smile. “Thank you! It isn’t often that we run into other dragons.” Another mirror, a female, moved out of the ranks, stepping towards Ifor. She had a curious plate on her head and shoulders, glimmering a number of prismatic colours. Enser couldn’t help but be enamoured by it. He wondered if it served any particular purpose. “Let me heal you before we move,” she explained, placing a paw on Ifor’s scales. “That looks like a nasty wound.” Enser couldn’t see what she was doing, but he watched in amazement as the cuts on Ifor’s back closed up, leaving no trace of the attack. Ifor turned her head to examine the injury. “Thank you!” Ifor exclaimed. “You are very kind!” “Shall we?” Enser asked, making his first steps towards the school grounds. Ifor and the mirror pack soon followed. Enser found himself walking next to Howlite. The mirror had placed his trident safely away once more. “If you don’t mind me asking, that doesn’t seem to be an ordinary trident, does it?” Enser pried. He hoped it wouldn’t be a touchy subject. “It’s enchanted to return to the hand of its wielder,” Howlite explained, seeming to grow more excited. “And the lightning?” Enser asked, remembering how the trident had called down a bolt of lightning to finish off the basilisk. “That’s new,” Howlite admitted. “I’ve never seen it do that before.” “Fascinating,” Enser breathed. Maybe someday he could get his hands on some sort of an enchanted weapon. He had no doubt that it would one day be of use in his quest. It was not long before the group reached the edge of the Whisper Woods. The rain had begun to let up again, and a few rays of sunlight were breaking through the clouds and casting the school in a vibrant glimmer. As they crossed the school grounds and reached the school buildings, Garnet was there to meet them. “And who are these dragons, who you have brought back with you?” Garnet asked, eying the pack suspiciously. “They saved Ifor and I from a basilisk. We would have been stone if it weren’t for them,” Enser explained. “We thought we could show them around the school a bit, take some time to show our gratitude.” “Very well,” Garnet sighed. “I guess they can have a look around. So long as they don’t expect any charity. The school doesn’t have much to give away as it is. But perhaps there are things we can learn from each other.” The wildclaw’s gaze fell upon one of the mirrors near the back, and Enser could see the interest in her bright green eyes. He didn’t let himself dwell on it too much, instead focussing his attention on the tour. Midnight had been surprised when Enser and Ifor had come back with a whole pack of new dragons. If he had known there had been such excitement, he would have wanted to join them in their excursion. He wondered why they didn’t tell him about it. Still, now was not the time to dwell on that. New dragons meant that there were likely new types of magic, and new types of magic meant things to learn. He recalled, while Ifor was recounting the story of their meeting, that one of them had been a healer of some sort, one with strange stones on her body. The pack had split up after the initial tour, each pursuing their own interests and conversations. It was easy enough to pick out the mirror that had done the healing, and approach her with his questions. “Greetings, my name is Midnight, and I’m a student here at the school,” the imperial dipped his head respectfully. “My name is Agate,” the mirror responded, searching the imperial’s face quizzically. “What can I do for you?” “I heard that you were the one who healed Ifor, and I’ve been interested in healing magic for quite some time,” Midnight explained. “I was wondering if you could tell me anything about how you learned to heal.” “I’m not sure if I can help you much,” Agate looked apologetic. “It’s kind of something I was born with. I know that these stones help me heal without taking on the injuries of the dragons I’m helping, but I don’t know much beyond that. It might be something you just have to know, not something you can learn.” Midnight was taken aback. It had never occurred to him that there might be something he just didn’t have the aptitude for. He refused to believe it. His parents had always told him that he could do anything that he set his mind to. “Thank you anyways,” Midnight dipped his head again, fighting to maintain politeness. She was wrong, he just knew it. He’d find some other way to heal. “You seem to have some very curious magical abilities there,” Garnet paced around the mirror. She had managed to pull Bako, as she had discovered her name was, into her office for a more private conversation. The mirror had caught her attention instantly. “How did you know?” Bako asked. “I’ve got a good sense of these things,” Garnet admitted. The truth was, she had sensed various magical abilities from many of the pack, but none sparked the same interest as Bako’s had. She just had to figure out what the mirror could do. “Could you show me?” “I’m not sure,” Bako confessed. “I’ve never really shown anyone my powers before. I’m still figuring them out, if I’m being honest.” “Well, if you’re ever looking for a place to settle down, we’d love to have you on here as a teacher,” Garnet offered. She didn’t need to see Bako’s magic to know she was someone she wanted on her staff. “A teacher?” Bako repeated, clearly surprised. “Yes,” Garnet grinned. “Our school is relatively young, and in order to grow we need more staff members with strong magic to help train the next generations. If your magic is truly as strong as I’m sensing, you’d make a valuable asset. “I’ll think about it,” Bako responded. That was all the answer Garnet needed. She just hoped that the mirror would choose to stay. “You don’t seem happy to be back,” Ifor looked up to see one of the mirrors approaching her. She had found her place on a flat shard staring out over the ocean. It had appropriately been named the Shardstone Lookout. “Of course I’m happy to be back!” Ifor tried to paste a fake smile on her face, but she wasn’t sure it was convincing. “I overheard your conversation with Enser. I didn’t mean to, I was just out hunting and happened to be nearby,” the mirror explained. “I’m Smash by the way.” Ifor just nodded glumly. “Then you know that I don’t know enough magic to be a good student.” Somehow, it was easier to talk to someone outside of the school about her worries. “Do you want to be here?” Smash asked. “Of course I want to be here!” Ifor shot back. “Learning magic is my dream! And not just the elemental magic stuff, I want to learn magic that most dragons don’t take the time to learn! There’s just so many things it can do, so many things to discover!” “Then don’t let anything take that away from you,” Smash advised. “From the sounds of it, the only one chasing you out of here is you. Everyone else seems very happy to have you here, regardless of how much magical talent you were born with. I was not so lucky when I was pursuing my own dreams, so cherish it while you have it.” Ifor wanted to question more, but she sensed it was a deeply personal question and didn’t want to push. “Thank you, I needed to hear that,” Ifor sighed. “Sometimes I forget how much my own insecurities get in the way. It can make it easy to forget what my reality actually is.” “You’re going to be a great mage someday, I’m sure of it,” Smash grinned. The mirror got to her feet. “I’ve got to get going now, the pack is heading out soon.” “You’re leaving already?!” Ifor exclaimed. “But you just got here!” “We aren’t the sort of clan that is comfortable staying in one place for too long,” Smash explained. “And we also aren’t used to spending much time around other dragons. Besides, Garnet made it clear she doesn’t want us staying long, and we wouldn’t want to overstay our welcome.” “Thanks again, for everything,” Ifor said. “If you’re ever in the area again, please drop by for a visit!” Smash just smiled warmly, then she turned and left. From the lookout, Ifor watched as she ran to join the mirror pack gathering again in the field, before the group look off running back into the woods. It was interesting, how dragons could come into one’s life for such a short time, and yet still have such a lasting impact. She knew she would never forget the way that Howlite had saved her life, or how Smash had brought her encouragement when she needed it more, and yet, she would not be surprised if they never crossed paths ever again. She would just have to cherish the memories, and use them to bring her hope for the future, and the dragons she had yet to meet. ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @Leopardmask @Sabariel @Drachenschwinge @Autumnus @GrinningWolf24 @Glassowary @CleverTrick @Stormlark @Dakala @Moonweaverr @Tirtouga678 @unicorn9 @Disillusionist @catmeow1 @Tynethyne @SkullGeist @Dynami @ShinyDecidueye @Tiffkaboo @secretlylying @MisterMylez @BarbaraFett @Aetherstorm @VeniVidiVici @YakileBekrea @MeepBoie400 @CorvvusCorax @WeaverofLies @myriadofstars ----- Special thanks to @Leopardmask for doing this crossover with me! It's a great pinkerlocke! I've been reading it and its sister pinkerlocke, Nameless, since I joined the site! They are both stories very dear to my heart for that reason!

@Petall I've got a tendency to ignore canon breed lore, and that's one of the points I keep forgetting: Mirrors moving in packs. It'll be interesting to see how they interact with the school, especially since Garnet's got her eye on one of them. "If he had known there had been such excitement, he would have wanted to join them in their excursion. He wondered why they didn’t tell him about it." -- Oh, Midnight. Garnet was right; he has soooo much to learn. [emoji=bogsneak star] It's nice to see another of Age's and Accident's kids here! And oh wow, Smash is such an awesome name! Really fun to read about how your characters interacted with @Leopardmask's, and I can't wait to see where this goes!

@Disillusionist

I often forget as well! I've never really had enough mirrors in one clan to properly form a pack, though I would love to write one at some point!

So so much.

Yeah!!! I meant to mention the connection at the end of the chapter, but I forgot, so I'm glad you picked up on it!

Both dragons were thinking about their experiences with the pack while they picked at their food. Ifor's heart was pounding with anxiety, not that that was something unusual. After what seemed like an eternity, Midnight spoke. "So, where did you and Enser disappear off to this morning?" Midnight asked accusingly. Ifor shriveled under his question. "I was- we were-" "It's okay, you can say that you were doing things to leave me out," Midnight huffed. "I already know." "It wasn't like that," Ifor's response was very quiet. "Yeah right, you two always running off together doing one thing or another," Midnight said. "I'm always being left out." "It was one time!" Ifor exploded, suddenly angry at his accusation. Immediately, she felt embarrassed for lashing out. "I just mean that it was just the one time. And I had gone out on my own. He just showed up. We didn't plan it." "Wait, so you mean that he's not off meeting you every time he disappears in the dead of night?" Midnight looked shocked. "You make it sound like we're some sort of a couple!" Ifor laughed. "Sneaking off for stolen moments with each other! I promise you nothing like that is going on! He's just a friend! I don't even like him in that way. And I have no idea what he's off doing in the middle of the night. I'm not a part of it, I'm usually sleeping!" "Huh," Midnight looked deep in thought. "Now I'm feeling kind of embarrassed. I thought you guys were deliberately leaving me out. I've always sort of felt like the odd one out with you two." Him? The odd one out? Ifor wanted to laugh. Maybe she was less alone in her anxieties than she thought. All of a sudden, there was the clanging of footsteps, and Enser rushed into the common room, out of breath. "You look as though you've seen a ghost!" Midnight exclaimed, wide-eyed. "Do you guys see the paint?" Enser asked. "Oh, I'm lucky to be alive!" "What paint?" Ifor asked. But the longer she looked, the more she could see the green splotches, blending in with his natural scale colouring. "What happened to you? Did you raid an art store?" She giggled. "Don't laugh," Enser glared at her, then sighed. "Sorry, I didn't mean to snap, I just ran into some really powerful creature. I'm lucky to have gotten away at all." He slid on a chair next to Ifor. "But enough about me, what have you two been talking about?" "Umm..." Ifor wasn't sure she wanted to say. "I was just worried you two were running off on adventures and leaving me out," Midnight explained. "No biggie." "First Ifor, now you," Enser shook his head. "Guys, we need to be better than this! If we're all going to be turning against each other and feeling like we don't fit in, we're going to tear each other apart. You heard the prophecy, if we bite each other's feet, we'll get crushed." "You think that's what it means?" Midnight looked surprised. "I don't know, but I don't want to take any risks. Being crushed doesn't exactly sound pleasant, and I don't want anything to happen to my friends," Enser sighed. "You think of us as friends?" Ifor lifted her head, chest flooding with emotion. "Of course I do, you dingbat," Enser laughed. "We gotta stick together, us students. How else are we going to make it through this alive? School's tough, you need all the help about you. And I don't know about you, but I want to know that I have two dragons who will come to my aid when I need it, especially when I've taken the steps to be there for both of you." The wildclaw shared a knowing nod with each of the other two dragons. Ifor wondered what he had helped Midnight with, but she figured that it would be impolite to ask. "Of course," Midnight said, as though surprised that he even had to ask. "Absolutely," Ifor added. "Now, about this paint creature, is this something we can help you with?" Midnight asked. "If it attacks me, yeah," Enser said. "But I'm hoping to avoid future encounters. There's something I'm working on, and having it around would make things rather difficult. But enough about that, why don't we all play a game or something?" The three dragons spent the evening sitting around the enchanted fire, roasting treats in the flames and playing games with each other. Apart from the Jubilee, it was the first time they had just spent time together, bonding and enjoying each others company. Ifor hoped that there would be more moments like this. @Petall Whoo, now Ifor and Midnight know about Enser's midnight shenanigans! ...Not that I know much about them either, tbh. xD Now I'm really intrigued about what he's doing. A paint creature sounds pretty interesting! One of the NotN sprites/fauns maybe?

Apparently he's not good at keeping his midnight outings secret. Although, he is doing a good job of keeping what he's doing on those midnight outings secret.
