Chapter 3: Why her?
(19, 8)
They’ve already hatched, and they were all beautiful.
<--Icefire
<--Pastellica
<--Opal
<--Isol
<--Sally
All 5 of them were as colorful as they expected. And they were getting along with Okeanos real well (they named him that because Babbage’s first language was Greek, and the bogsneak reminded him of the ocean). Icefire loved to roughhouse with him, Pastellica sometimes shared his meat with him, but Opal and Isol didn’t really interact with him as much. They just played around with their sister, Sally.
“Now where did Okeanos come from? Why was he hanging out in the Ashfall Waste in the first place?” Babbage asks himself.
“You should be interacting with the kids, Babbage. They just hatched and all you’re thinking about is Okeanos?” Lyn says, laying down with the chattering babies.
“But I’m just thinking about it. He’s a fugitive and the other fire dragons are trying to find him.” Babbage looks at Lyn.
“Da?” Icefire-who quickly learned how to stand-walked towards Babbage and he gazed into her orange eyes. They were so elegant along with the rest of her colors. Just like fire and ice.
“Yes, Icefire?” Babbage looked down at the tiny banescale.
“I-is-” Icefire tried to talk, but couldn’t just yet.
“Is who?” Babbage says with a smile on his face.
“Eh… eh…” Icefire glances at Okeanos, who was curled up next to Pastellica.
“The blue one next to your brother?” Babbage responds to her babbles.
“Is-h-he… m-my…” Icefire was quickly beginning to learn words and Babbage had an idea what she was trying to get at.
“Is the blue one your other brother?” Babbage looks at Lyn, seeing that Opal, Isol, and Sally are wrestling on her back. He looked hesitant, but Lyn just nodded. What did it mean? Tell them they’re related, even though that’ll never be true? Tell them they’re not?
“Yes, he is your brother. He just has a different eye color.”
He’s just a different flight entirely. Oh, but I hope she gets convinced, though I doubt it. Babbage thinks worriedly. Icefire grew a wide smile on her face and tried to jump up to him. “What is it? Wanna tell me something?” Babbage leans down and listens to her.
“I… w-wu-” She stopped her attempt at saying love, but Babbage only smiled and chuckled.
“Love, my dear. Say love.” Babbage says with happiness.
“I… love… you!” Icefire said it and gave a victory jump. Lyn gave a happy chuckle and looked back at the 3 kids playing on her back.
“Kids, be a little more careful. Hey, Isol, stop biting your brother’s tail!” Lyn watches Isol start to nibble on Opal’s tail, and Sally only wobbled over to Lyn’s head and flopped over it just to stare her in the eyes.
“I wuv you!” Sally smiles as Lyn smiles back.
“I wuv you, too. Now please get down from my head.” Lyn said. Sally nodded and fell from her head on her chin. “Oh, a little more careful next time, Sally! Are you okay?” Lyn looked down at Sally who got up on her hind legs and looked back at Lyn, seeing that her mother has a smile on her face at the sight of her standing.
“Yes. Me ok.” Sally nods at Lyn as she watches her wobble over to Okeanos and Pastellica. Only then did they all point their heads towards the tree that Babbage slept below of when the harpies came two days ago. On top of it was a harpy, staring down at them with an evil glare in its eyes. Okeanos and Pastellica were still asleep.
“Sally, get over here right now,” Lyn whispers with an angry tone.
“Ma! See? See?” Sally jumps excitedly at the sight of the harpy, but that only made Babbage and Lyn tenser.
“Sally, don’t move!” Lyn yells at her in a whisper. But Sally only came closer to the harpy. Babbage could walk over there to stop her, but the harpy would only attack them at the slightest movement.
“Hi! Hi!” Sally jumped with excitement and tried to fly up to it. Lyn slowly got a grip on Okeanos’s tail with her teeth and dragged him away from the tree, with Okeanos and Pastellica waking up. The two hatchlings stared at the harpy, and even they were terrified.
“Sally! Sally!” Pastellica didn’t know how to whisper, so he only yelled. Right when he yelled, the harpy jumped off the tree and grabbed Sally.
Everyone was screaming. The babies were crying, Lyn was trying to gather the babies up and Babbage was attacking the harpy. Sally was screaming and was trying to bite her way out of the harpies grip, but didn’t have the biteforce that would make the harpy release her.
“LET GO OF HER, YOU FILTHY BIRD!” Babbage yelled at the harpy, tearing at its wings. It cawed and pecked at the banescale father and all Lyn was doing was trying to calm down the babies. But no matter the shushing, they wouldn’t stop.
“DA! DAAAA!” Sally was crying and Babbage tore off the harpies mask, in which it screamed. It then dropped Sally.
Lyn ran after Sally, Babbage attacked the harpy and the babies came closer together. The harpy saw Lyn go after Sally, but it only dived after her and clawed at her face. She screamed as Babbage tried to get Sally.
CRACK!
The babies cowered their eyes, Lyn started to scream and Babbage couldn’t move. He stared down at Sally, her face frozen in terror, with only one tear left in her eye. Babbage started to shake and slowly floated down towards her. Lyn had already snapped the harpy’s neck and she was wailing.
“NOOOOOO! AAAAAH, NOOOOOO! WHY HER? OH, PLAGUEBRINGER WHY HER? NOOOOO, MY BABY!!!” Lyn was crying with blood trickling down her face and the babies were also wailing. Babbage picked up Sally with his wings and stared at her eyes. They were closed, and they were to remain like that. Babbage sheds a tear, held the dead Sally close to him, and shuddered one last word to her.
“I’m sorry.”
AAAH A FRKIN BABY DIED!!! I don't like it as much as you don't, I know. Let's try to make tomorrow better, shall we?
