Happy, munching on the sweets, he went to the event grounds and joined the Curling event; maybe not his utmost favourite event, but man, had he gotten good and sweeping the floor by managing the Clan’s menagerie, a skill that surely was somewhat transferable to an elite sport, right? Fireclaw, before heading home the other day, made sure to inscribe himself for the next day’s event and asked for an evening time. The festival attendants were as diligent and efficient as usual and managed to fulfill his request without any hassles. Thanks to this he had been able to leave a note for Clarity and Galcynea before heading to bed; his friends arriving late and leaving early, but hopefully they wouldn’t be too exhausted by the end of the week after working so hard. He got his suit ready for his performance, ate a light lunch, and made some gentle stretches, especially focusing on his knee, to properly prepare for the evening. Fireclaw arrived with more than enough time to spare before his slot, so he mingled around with newcomers to the Winter Games and joked around with the older veterans he had gotten to know throughout the years. His time arrived, he headed out into the ice rink, looked around, and of course, there they were: his two friends, in seats of honour. Happy, he set out to provide them with a wondrous performance; forceful, but with a well-choreographed and graceful succession of jumps, twirls, and acrobatics.[/columns]

Day 4 - Figure Skaing

The fourth day arrived and his companions had left, but not before leaving a note confirming that they’d be there to see him compete in the Figure Skating event.

Happy, he set out to provide them with a wondrous performance; forceful, but with a well-choreographed and graceful succession of jumps, twirls, and acrobatics.

Not only was he keeping to the schedule, he was ahead of it, and would manage to take a break day this year. He considered taking that break now, but given how well-rested he felt, and that Clarity had made sure to bring with them the strongest coffee the Starfall Isles had to offer (that, of course, didn’t compromise nor enhance athletic performance), he was ready to face another day of sports. Doing nothing all day would be a bit boring, and he did not feel like going to the festival grounds of the Gala. He settled for Hockey, leaving the Cross-Country Skiing event for last, as usual. Strapping on gear and buckling in to play hockey with friends and newcomers alike was always a delight; one that leaves you bruised up even if you win or lose, but man was it fun![/columns]

The trio of auras were huddled up, tapping one of the vice skip's rockbreaker stones between them to denote who had the floor in the huddle. It gave them a sense of order, really. She didn't know whether to be disappointed or relieved to find them murmuring over the last survey of the games. All of them had been presented with it, and all had found their own way to fill it out. Simple tail pats, wing hand writing, and in the case of her vice skip, one of the smaller pieces of his tertiary. Seems they weren't worried about this last toss. She'd had to tone down her glamour spell, odd-looking as she was with it. Just a normal aether here, at least for now! Well, somewhat. Just a few more eyes, and feathers where her wings were. No big deal, in the end. It hardly mattered to her, in the end. Her partner had filled out the form, eager to help where he could. She, however, was eager to start what she knew she'd do best: race. She'd strapped the skates to her feet easily enough, and had practiced all week long for the last race of the games. She may not be used to just practicing, but Vesper had been kind enough to practice with her. They'd evened out at one point, but by today she'd taken over as the fastest of the duo. It was a breeze to simply settle on her being their speed skater. She was off as soon as the signal was given, knowing well that her final run was always her best run: this would be her best time yet! "Sledding" brought to mind little rolling hills, and having fun with friends, and laughing if you fell off into a snowdrift. This was categorically not that. This was careening down a slide made of ice at speeds even the fastest Spiral would struggle to match in flight. This was a single mistake potentially leading to a fatal crash. A warm but heavy hand landed on their shoulder and squeezed. It was Kvika, their mentor. She stood beside them, breath pluming almost like smoke into the chill air thanks to the heat of her Fire-born interior, and said, "No second thoughts." Hildr swallowed and turned their round-horned head back to the chute, but Byrn continued to look up at Kvika. She asked, "You're sure I can't back out? I think they could mark us as a crash or something ..." "No," Kvika said firmly, though not unkindly. "You will do this. A knight does not back out of their obligations." "Right," Bryn said dubiously. She shared a look with Hildr, both of them considering Kvika's words before they both nodded. Bryn turned to Kvika and said in a firmer voice, "You're right." "Of course I'm right," Kvika said with a small smile. "Now, I believe it is your turn." Brynhildr was still scared, but nonetheless they marched up to take their position for the ride of their life.

Modi let out a roar of frustration and rounded on Magni. "This is all your fault!" "Now, brother," Magni began in a cajoling voice that only served to send Modi into further paroxysms of fury as the two of them made their way back to rejoin their other siblings. "Don't give me that! You kept sweeping for too long on your side, if you'd stopped --" "I was only doing as Valkyrja said --" "You don't have to listen to everything Valkyrja says, she's way down the other end of the ice, we have a far better idea of what the stone is going to do than --" "HEY!" Valkyrja's voice cut through Modi's monologue. She glared both of her brothers, hands on hips. "You do need to listen to everything I say, actually. Father put me in charge of the team. And maybe if you'd kept sweeping for a bit longer, that stone might have gone where I wanted it to and knocked the other team's stone out of the way instead of one of ours!" She pointed down the ice towards the target. Reluctantly, Modi looked over and realised that there was, indeed, a stone from the other team that their latest attempt might have hit, if it hadn't veered off course because Modi gave up on sweeping early. He snarled in frustration and threw his brush down before sliding away from the group. Thruda watched him go, her arms wrapped around herself, and muttered, "Oh dear ..." "Don't worry, sister," Magni said, throwing an arm around her shoulders. "Modi feels failure deeply, that's all -- he will be back soon enough to continue the game!" "He'd better come back with a better attitude, that's all I can say," Valkyrja said, and turned to watch the other team send a stone towards the target.

Day 7

Curler, Turquoise

It's not the first time Turquoise had been tossed from team to team, he simply didn't expect to be part of a team that competed in the Winter Games. He was skilled to gauging his own strength and he had the stamina to sweep for a fair distance. And a silly one for number 6 ... Ice Hockey Lona was so excited to take part in the Sornieth Winter Games! She had hatched on the Astrolab, long before it crashed, and so these elements of planetbound dragon culture were fascinating to her. The strong Flight loyalty she saw exhibited was inspiring, and so she had signed up for the Ice Hockey, with the idea of joining in with that herself. She had been assigned to one of the Arcane teams, and the very nice attendant had helpfully provided a little instruction booklet with all the positions, rules and instructions. Unfortunately, between sign-ups and her first match, there had been a lengthy wait while she queued to collect the correct equipment and protective gear - helmet, padding and so on ... and Lona had started absentmindedly snacking. On the booklet. This had continued while she made her way to the changing rooms, met her teammates and put on her outfit for the first match. Now she looked down at the booklet and realised ... she only had the cover (which had an unappetising cardboardy texture) and the final page left. She looked down at the words printed there: Finally, a reminder for all competitors: the Sornieth Winter Games are an opportunity for Dragonkind to come together and enjoy sports. So remember to have fun! Well. She might not know how to play, or what her position meant, or how scoring worked, or anything else -- but she knew how to have a good time. That was something! And it would have to be enough: before she could beg one of her teammates to let her glance through their booklet, the attendants called their team out onto the ice. Lona ripped the final page from the booklet and stuffed it into her mouth as a final, fortifying snack before joining her team to skate out together and play.
And a silly one for number 6 ...

Lona was so excited to take part in the Sornieth Winter Games!
