DAY 23
Pull: Writing
A high-speed chase had ensued amongst the entangling brambles and trees. Elegy and Anima were stockier in build and had a little more trouble manoeuvring between the crisscrossing stems and vines, while Harlequin zipped straight ahead with reckless abandon, the brambles recoiling in his wake.
Elegy eventually toppled to one side, thrown off balance trying to dodge yet another plant. Anima skidded to a halt and plopped down right beside him. The jangle of the chimes and lantern Harlequin carried could still be heard in the distance, but Elegy felt about ready to faint. Unlike his brother, Elegy's natural magic didn't enhance his stamina, and he'd pushed himself so much stars were already swimming in his eyes.
He hadn't even rested thirty seconds when Anima was already urging him to his feet, his brother's frenzied magic colliding with his own lethargic waves. "Come on, we still have an egg thief to catch. We never go back on our word, do we?" Groaning, Elegy hauled himself back up, the magic that was not his own still coursing in his blood, and after much difficulty began winging after his brother still crackling with pink energy.
As they neared a particularly thick tangle, they could hear sounds of a scuffle inside. Shoving themselves into the plants with sheer force, they saw Harlequin tangling with the Talonok, his jade body a blur against the brown feathers and purple egg. Anima was about to step in when with a clever twist of his body, Harlequin evaded a set of claws and tripped the Talonok up.
Surely this is it, Elegy thought. But how he was wrong. Before the Spiral could seize the egg, the avian scrambled to its feet and leaped into the air, trying to unleash an airborne assault. It was clear the bird would fight to the death for that egg. What for? No one knew, but they were determined to get the unborn dragon back before anything could happen to it.
The egg hatching came as a surprise for everyone. As the Talonok dodged another grab by its hostage's father, a crack rang out and Harlequin stopped, terrified. A sense of impending doom filled the Talonok and it cawed in fear, scrambling to get out before the hatchling could pop out and squash him to the ground. As it juggled with the rapidly spiderwebbing egg, Harlequin circled warily, looking for the first opportunity to reclaim his progeny.
With a loud shatter, a Spiral tumbled out, a confused expression on its face as it was launched into the air. Trying to use both its legs and wings at once, it tangled itself into a strange knot as it thumped into Harlequin's hold. "Such a little joker, aren't you?" The relieved father laughed, nudging his son out of the knot. Darkly intelligent eyes blinked back at him, and the hatchling cooed, trying to imitate his father's grin. Unnoticed, the Talonok crept away. It had failed to obtain an unhatched egg, so it fled before anyone could notice its disappearance.
Elegy and Anima looked at the heartwarming scene, identical grins on their faces. "It's time to go back, isn't it?" Anima whispered, and Elegy nodded in assent. Hopefully Harlequin remembered the way back...
~~~
Ivy stared at the broken eggshells in silence. There had been nothing inside the eggs, nothing except air and two wisps of arcane energy that slipped through her desperate claws. The rest had scattered to give her space to mourn, though she was sure that being the easily-attached bunch they were, they too were remembering her lost clutch in their own ways. Only Gloria had stayed behind, stoic and silent.
"If it helps, I was born like that too. Awoke to find empty eggshells and wisps of energy floating away. It's just this land, and the curse upon it that seems to take hatchlings away. The two that went with your mate? Their sister was taken too. I'm not sure if that made you feel any better, but know that we'll always be here." Gloria spoke hesitantly, as if on thin ice. It seemed so unlike the demeanour of the Banescale, but with a shaky smile Ivy received the comforting words.
"Heh. Thanks. I just... hope Harlequin's okay." As if he had been summoned by her words, from a distance came wingbeats, and a familiar green figure came into view followed shortly by two silver Nocturnes. On Harlequin's neck was draped a smaller figure with darker green than her mate's... could it be?
Their eyes met, and Harlequin's filled with sorrow, but hers filled with wonder at her precious son. Slowly, her mate uncoiled their son and slid him into her hands. He was infinitely smaller than she could ever have imagined, but he was so, so
warm. His soft dark eyes melted her heart, and as Harlequin curled around her and the hatchling, their child gurgled softly and nuzzled into her, wide wondering eyes fluttering shut as he found peace in her embrace.
Ivy wouldn't have taken anything in exchange for that moment.
AND HERE COME THE BABIES. But... only one survived...... *cries in corner* Joker was the only one who the RNG blessed, may he live a long and fruitful life.
These are the poor souls who never saw the light of day... feel free to take them if you wish, otherwise they'll be exalted after a week. :") actually, the other Spiral was the only one to inherit Harlequin's Capsule but aaaaaa it was not to be
