Azrael quietly stepped away from the rest of the group. They had found their way out with the help of Harlequin and Ivy, with the family of three joining their group which was growing larger by the day. Sure, he loved sticking around with them, but sometimes it just got a little... suffocating.
It was nice to be alone, for once.
His claws sparked with flame, and whenever they touched the water, a plume of elegant purple smoke curled up into the night sky. Hesitantly, he lowered his whole paw onto the surface of the water, and hot vapour swept over him. It had been instinctual to use his fire, despite his natural element of Shadow. The warm steam washed over his scales, enveloping him in a comfortable haze.
Slowly, lethargy started to kick in. His eyes flickered, but he fought to stay awake - he couldn't let this night of silence pass him by in sleep. He removed his red-hot claws from the water and cool air blasted him back into full alertness. The moon cast a serene light on everything around, bathing the world in an ethereal silver glow.
It was then that grass rustled behind him, and every feather on his wings prickled with apprehension. Someone's behind. He whirled around to see-
"You."

"You."
That single word hit her harder than an avalanche. She opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out except a strangled sound. Her internal world was in chaos. She reached out a claw, and recoiled.
"How..." she breathed, at a loss for words. Never in her life had she ever expected to see him alive and well before her again. Memories started to well up inside her, and she choked out a quiet sob.
"You look just like a regular dragon to me."
"Come on, you're not going to get younger holed up in that cave!"
"It's okay. I'll always be here."
The overwhelming flash of light, then nothing.
His energy signature had developed a new purple edge. The amber flames that used to dance around him now flickered with darkness. She stared at him, unmoving.
"I... I know you."
"... Yes. You do."
"You... you appear... in my dreams." She said nothing. It was then she knew that Azrael no longer remembered her, and the realisation came like a stab to her already fragile heart.
Nonetheless, she once again felt that pull towards him, and cautiously stepped closer, revealing her full form from behind the grass. His eyes seemed to widen even further as he took in her constellations, stark against the faded grass. But there was no spark of recognition as she had so desperately hoped.
The two Skydancers stepped closer to each other, a myriad of emotions swelling through their hearts. Their signatures blurred together, a harmonious scene of sunset, and quietly Azrael whispered, "I know you."
Tearfully, Isis smiled at him. "You do know me."
"But I can't seem to remember you." His eyes betrayed sorrow, confusion and that spark of fire she would recognise anywhere.
"It's okay. I can remember for us both."
No words were exchanged. The moon continued to scatter its light on the two. And slowly, Isis found content in standing next to the dragon she had dearly missed.

:]
Ok but honestly I wasn't expecting it either... I just wanted to write about Azrael since he gets so little screentime and it suddenly occurred to me that I should get Isis in, or she's going to rot in her cave forever. (also I have lore for the two of them)

The Banescale trio hasn't been in the spotlight for so long, so here's humanised versions of the three! Tried to practice drawing humans, but... uh... yes. Carmen's shoe is weird. Gloria turned out better than expected though! Zeta... why does Zeta look like a goat?? Eh??? And also don't ask me how capes work on winged things. They just... do.
Conclusion: human drawing skills improved by 0.1%, Gloria is shady girl

Azrael felt a strange sense of peace standing next to her, like a missing piece of himself had been returned. She looked different from in his dreams. A cold opal had frosted over her scales, blotted out some stars in her glimmering hide. Yet she was as stunningly beautiful just as in his dreams.
He hadn't failed to notice the flicker of disappointment in her eyes as he told her about his dreams. Clearly they had met in the distant past - but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't remember for the life of him. So he was just standing with her in slightly awkward silence watching the silver-tinted lake ripple in the moonlight.

"Do you really not remember?" she asked quietly, and his heart ached to hear the resignation in her voice. He lowered his head, tears beginning to prickle at his eyes.
"... No. I'm so sorry." she sighed and said nothing more. Guilt stabbed at him, and compelled by some ancient force he gently placed his claws on hers. "But I know you were someone special to me." He hesitated.
"You still are."
He could feel her gentle light shine brighter, just a bit, and in response his flame rose to meet her brilliant aura. They stood in silence, not wanting to break the strange warmth that had risen between them. Their magics mingled and swirled, like an aura castle that blocked out everything else. It was just the two of them, staring peacefully at the lake and beyond.
Then something crashed behind them. Something loud. They whipped around, already readying shots of magic, when the sight before them froze them with horror.
An unidentifiable mass of shadows. Roiling darkness that blotted out the stars in the sky. There was only one thing that could be.
"The Shade."
Isis gritted her teeth. The shadows were back. But she wouldn't let them take Azrael. Not after they had just reunited. "Azrael, on the count of three I want you to run." Azrael recoiled from her like he had been stung.
"No! I-I have to help you." It was a tense staredown, right under the pressure of an impending fight, but finally Isis huffed and nodded.
"Keep yourself safe. Don't get hit by my attacks." And she was off, a terrifying blaze of yellow light charging at the devouring tendrils. The clearing sank into darkness, and Azrael knew it was time to help. His wings flared with flame, claws darkening into shadows, and he leaped for the mass of mouths and teeth, fear feeding his flames and lengthening his shadows.
His claws came down hard on the Shade, and it let out a blood-curdling scream, thrashing wildly as he hung on for dear life and set them both ablaze. Isis was diving from above, all light and stars and beauty, eyes shining with determination. Azrael braced himself to jump.
Three.
Two.
One.
The seconds seemed to pass in slow-motion, as Isis screamed towards the shadows and he dug his claws deeper into the Shade. The golden aura that cloaked Isis grew brighter and brighter, and he was mesmerised by the yellow hue. It was so captivating.
"AZRAEL! MOVE!" At the last second, his claws loosened and he spun away, feathers leaving a blazing trail in their wake. The Shade let out another echoing, demonic screech, and he knew Isis had nailed its weak spot. Together, they sent out wave after wave of light and flame and shadow, streaks of magic that arced across the clearing and tore into the entity. Slowly, they chipped away at it until its movements grew sluggish and they stood panting, unable to summon any other speck of magic.
"I think... we did it?" Azrael whispered, too beat to speak at normal volume. Isis frowned at the weakly pulsing shadows.
"Too early to say." She turned to him, yellow eyes serious. "Listen. We have to go. Now. Get the rest of the dragons out." Wordlessly, the pale Skydancer nodded, and the two raced out of the clearing, shaking the rest of the group out of their sleep and herding them out of the area and back to the safety of Isis' tunnels. Isis paused before she followed them. "Something doesn't feel right. The shadows weren't defeated this easily the last time -"
Azrael flew into the air. Wrapped around him was a tendril of pulsing darkness. Snarling, Isis shot bolt after bolt of light at the shadows. "You will not take him!"
Oh, but we will. Never forget how you made us suffer. This is just a small part of what we went through. Enjoy your neverending solitude.
No!
She desperately launched into the sky, light streaking through her feathers and coalescing in a sphere in front of her. Give... him... back! The ball of energy skirled towards the shadows, and there was a huge explosion.
When she looked up again, the shadows were gone. Azrael was gone. She felt all the strength leave her limbs, and she collapsed to the ground. I failed... I couldn't protect him... A strange sparkle caught her eye, and her heart forgot to beat as soon as she laid eyes on the three eggs.
Isis stumbled over, not trusting her instincts. She placed a claw on one eggshell, and the magic within thrummed stronger. Numbly, she curled up around the only traces of Azrael she had left.
Day was breaking across the horizon, but all she felt was the gloom of a bleak night. A tear slipped out as she fell into a fitful slumber.

I had an apparel pull from way back that I was just waiting to use. And the plot thickens! I feel kinda bad for torturing Isis like this, honestly. I promise her ending will be at least bittersweet. [s]ok but no guarantees[/s] Probably can't manage a completely happy ending, seeing my plans for the story :/ what do yall think? Personally I enjoyed the battle scene. I enjoy writing battles in general.
