Birger
~Cook~

Like all his biological siblings, he was hatched a Guardian.

...like most of those 7 siblings, it fit him badly.

It was all well and good the first few years, but all hatchlings are carefree like that in the beginning.

It was as he started growing that the problems came. He didn't feel the Call to Search... and he didn't grow a beard.

The Search he could have lived without. He knew his family was a bit weird that way, and that he had most likely already found his Charge - just not found out what it was yet.

The beard was worse. He just... could not understand why it wouldn't grow. He was certainly more than old enough for it, having stopped growing a year before.

When he went to his parents about it, they exchanged worried looks, held him close, reassured him and called upon Loke.

To be honest, he had always been a bit afraid of Loke. He knew they were siblings and that all his older siblings loved the Fae - especially Fritha, and Fritha was his favourite sibling, so he usually defaulted to her judgement - but... the Plague Mage was thousands of years older than him.

...so was Fritha.

But Fritha was old in the wise-and-calm-and-patient way, Loke was old in the powerful-and-unpredictable-and-awe-inspiring way.

So he didn't interact a lot with his older brother, preferring to stay away when he could, and since Loke usually had bigger and better things to do than go looking for his as-of-yet youngest sibling, they really hadn't talked much.

So when his parents called for Loke, he felt worse than he already had, but Frigga draped a wing over him and hummed faintly, so he stayed.

His mum and dad were there, and Loke was family too, so... He was safe. He knew he was. but that didn't stop the rising panic. Especially not when Loke asked him to explain himself again when he arrived.

There was a reason he hadn't mentioned how wrong his own body felt up until this point, and just because he had reached the point where talking about it seemed the lesser evil compared to continuing to live with it alone did not mean that he appreciated having to explain himself twice.

He was just about in tears by the time he finished his second explanation, and only Frigga's wing over his back and Odin's tail draped over his kept him from just... bolting and hiding out in a ruin for a year.

Halstein could bring him food, right? And Saga would be able to smuggle him books so he wasn't bored. And he was sure that Hillevi would see it all as a grand old adventure to be camping out and could keep him company regularly.

Living in a ruin honestly didn’t sound all bad, actually-

What did Loke say?

His attention immediately snapped back to the situation at hand just in time to hear Loke sigh at him, fans reading concern, irritation, care.

“You barely heard a word of what I said, I’m guessing? Now, listen up little brother, because I can and want to help you, but I will not suffer fools who waste my time. This sounds like a clear case of your soul not matching your body. Now, if you,” and here he raises his voice, fans shifting to worry, anger, care, “had come to me earlier, this would have been an easy fix.” Pride sneaks into his cheek fans.

“You would still have been small, malleable and growing and your body would have taken well to a minor shift to mesh better with your soul. Now, however, we’ll have to do something bigger. I cannot shift your current body to match - your natural inner magical defences would undo my work within hours. What I can do,” and here the pride is no longer even pretending to hide, fans declaring pride, care, look-at-me, “is to overwhelm your form completely, leaving your inner defences so scrambled that they’d have no choice but to accept the new form. That would, however, mean breed-changing you, and if you haven’t already found your Charge, that means that you will likely lose it forever instead of keeping it vestigially as most Changed Guardians do.”

Loke pauses for the first time, leaving him room to speak, even if the Fae's fans read impatience, pride, care.

Seeing as he had been warned once already about wasting his big brother’s time, he scrambled for a response despite mostly feeling… numb. He was fairly sure he was in some kind of shock but Loke was waiting-

“But wouldn’t that make it worse?!” He blurts out, before reading the fan-shift to offended “I mean, if my soul is already wrong for this body but not that wrong and would only have needed a minor fix, wouldn’t” - oh. There was amusement and care as well on those fans. He slowed down a bit so that his mind could catch up to his tongue, “...wouldn’t making making my body even more different be bad?"

"No," Loke said (reassurance, pride, offence), "it wouldn't. You forget I have done this many times, brother - do you really think that I would suggest it if it would bring you harm? The shift will be uncomfortable and if you haven't found your charge yet you'll risk a stress-reaction from having your link to Fate severed, but you'll end up better in the end."

"Oh," He found it hard to speak. He should have questions, he should probably think more about this, it was such a big change, but he was just so relieved. That there was a way out, a way to not feel like his own body was betraying him every single day. He cleared his throat. "Can we... do it right now? Change me?"

His mum's wing squeezed reassuringly around his shoulders, and his dad shifted closer, pressing their sides together. Loke looked to Frigga. Frigga looked to her youngest son.

"If that is what would make you happy, dear-heart, then yes, we can do it now. I'm sorry for not noticing how you suffered." She nudged his neck with her head. Odin hummed.

"You'll be in recovery for a while. Would you like to take that time to find your new name, or would you like us to give you this one as well?"

He... hadn't even thought about that. They were right, though. If he was leaving this body behind, then he wanted to leave the name behind, too. There were too many bad memories attached, and it had never fit him anyway.

"Can you find one for me? Something kind?" His voice trembled, and he did not even know why at this point; there were just too many emotions.

"Of course, son." Odin rumbled, the vibrations travelling through his body and making him feel safe in a way he realised that he hadn't felt since before his first flight.

Everything was alright. His family wanted to help and support him. He wasn't alone anymore. Soon he would stop feeling wrong.

He finally cried those tears that had been threatening him with their presence all day, but found that he did not mind, even in front of his coolest and most intimidating brother; they were happy tears, after all.

Trivia
  • Birger is: Anxious, Kind, Friendly, Giving, Stubborn, Empathetic, Fragile.
  • He is one of Frigga's subordinates in the Internal Affairs branch. He works with: Diplomacy, Minor Healing, Intelligence, Minor Equipment.
  • Birger's name means "one who helps". History remembers him as "The Peaceful Chef".
  • Mated to Hrafn. Son of Odin and Frigga. Brother of Fritha, Mundur, Lyse, Lycke, Eirik, Anleifr and Hvass. Adopted brother of Loke, Itha and Barthur. Uncle of Kenna and Ketilmaer. Brother-in-law to Alaina, Ragna, Aissa and Hrothr.
  • He is fairly sure that his Charge was either "to help" or "to make others feel safe".
  • Birger staged a gradual friendly takeover of the Outpost's kitchens after he was Changed. No-one really minded since it had been a rotational chore before then that most dragons did not like very much. Needless to say, the food quality has improved drastically since Birger put himself in charge.
  • Birger likes nothing better than to feed others and provide a friendly ear to talk to (or a shoulder to cry on). It's become a habit for stressed Clan members to sign up for a couple of days of kitchen duty to calm down.
  • He has a prophesy regarding him, delivered by the dragoness Fate from The Fallen clan: "Birger, son of Odin and Frigga, within your talons, I sense the power to heal and to help. Your kindhearted and loving nature will be a beacon for those who require your help. You will be saviour to dragons. If you allow yourself to be, you can become an unstoppable force for all that is good and all that is right. You have the potential to change and shape the world. You must never underestimate the power of kindness. You must, however, be wary of those who attempt to dim your light. There are forces of evil near and far who will seek to extinguish your light and drag you down to the depths of sorrow. You must not let them succeed. Hold strong to who you are and let this prophecy guide you."
  • Needless to say, it stresses both him and his family out a fair bit to have this hanging over him, because while he is a fairly skilled fighter, he really dislikes actually having to use those skills and a prophesy like that usually leads to all sorts of conflict.
  • (Little does he know that he will fulfil that prophesy just by being himself, no combat needed.)
  • Couldn't bring himself to kill or drive out the rodents in the kitchen, so he has bribed and trained them instead. They are very well-behaved and clean little helpers now!
