Loke
~Mage~

Loke is the Outpost's most powerful Mage, even if outsiders may at first assume it is the older and more experienced Regin - especially since the Imperial holds the Senior Headship of the Mage Section and Loke is left to serve as Second of the General's Mages.

The truth is that Loke deferred the position of Senior Head to Regin in order to not have to deal with the paperwork and social duties expected of a Head - he'd much rather be left to do his own thing than have to "run around and attend to idiots all day".

So what made Loke rise to the top? The Outpost is, after all, the home of several Master Mages and they all possess magical talent, intellect and power in spades.

The answer is simpler than most would think - Loke has no secret trick, no hidden genius, no inborn magical gift. All he has is a single-minded, bordering on obsessive, interest in the inner workings of magic.

He was not even born with that interest; no, he was born with the same "healthy disdain" of magic that most Mirror dragons have.

...that might sound strange, considering the fact that he is a Fae - the magic-reliant breed born under the curious eyes of the Arcanist in the Starfall Isles.

When one takes into account that he was not always a Fae, however... well, suddenly it all makes much more sense.

Loke was born a Mirror. He liked being a Mirror, even if he did not have much to compare it to, at the time. As such, it is quite understandable that his sudden and unexpected change in physical state upset him greatly when he realised what had happened after he stumbled out of the impact zone of at least five different spells.

Disoriented, confused and hurting, Loke only let Fritha and Aghi near him during that first time after the Change, Fritha on account of her being his sister and Aghi as the mentor he had tied himself to after arriving in Light territory so as to have something - someone - familiar in the strange new place he had found himself in after leaving his original clan.

Once he had gained his bearings in his new body, though, he let loose upon the Clan. He was more than a little resentful about his Change, and figured that the least those who had forced it upon him could do was to provide target practice for him as he familiarised himself with his new body and its capabilities. Fritha could not talk him out of it, nor stop him, and Aghi did not even want to try.

His adopted parents - the Leaders of his new Clan - simply tried to give him space and time to settle, not wanting to intrude unnecessarily upon the independent young dragon. The Clan was war-hardened; a young dragon lashing out was not that big of an issue.

After he had come perilously close to permanently maiming a defenceless hatchling in his tantrum, however, his new father Odin decided that enough was enough and pinned him down to give him a stern roaring-to.

There are few dragons who are willing to go against a Guardian veteran after having been knocked to the ground, held down with enough force that they cannot even wiggle and then been roared at at point-blank range. Very few. And Loke, especially in his very small new body, was not one of them.

So he calmed down, dragged his sister into the Library for help and started reading, something which he probably never would have bothered with during different circumstances. He was convinced that if he just learned enough, if he just became skilled enough with this magic that has been forced upon him, he would one day be able to reverse the effects of the accident, no matter how hopeless it seemed.

Woe would be upon those who doubted him.

Trivia

Loke is: Impatient, Curious, Foul-mouthed, Surly, Proud, Short-tempered, Smart.
He is one of Odin's subordinates in the External Affairs branch, holding the Second Seat of the General's Mages as the Mad Mage. He works with: Containment, Heavy Combat, Major Healing, Magic, Science, Information.
Loke's name means "to break"; it is the name of the shape-shifting Norse god of magic, trickery and fire. History remembers him as "The Changeling".
Adopted son of Odin and Frigga. Adopted nephew of Aghi. Adopted brother of Itha, Berga and Barthur as well as the whole of the Leaders' brood: Fritha, Mundur, Lyse, Lycke, Eirik, Anleifr, Birger and Hvass. Brother-in-law to Ragna, Aissa, Hrothr and Hrafn. Adopted cousin of Knud and Sindri. Mate to the wandering mage Alaina. Father of Ketilmaer.
Loke connected to the Leading family more and more after Odin roared some sense into him, and now truly considers himself as a part of the family, adopting Aghi as an Aunt rather than a mentor.
Has now spent over a thousand years in Fae form, and while he has indeed attained a Mastery over Biological and Transfiguration Magics, he has also grown addicted to the power that magic gives him. So while he could theoretically turn himself back into a Mirror by now, he hasn't. Yet. He will, though, eventually! When he feels like it. (Or at least that's what he insists.)
His previous dislike of magic remains in that he still doesn't like people using magic against him. So of course he has mastered the art of transfiguring magical attacks in mid-air in order to turn them useless before they hit him.
Has an unwanted apprentice in Alfrun - the stubborn and annoying *** refused to leave him alone. So now he's stuck with the Lightning Fae and might as well teach him do do magic properly because honestly, that boy's casting was a disgrace.
The only one of his children who has decided to stay in the Outpost is Ketilmaer, and she doesn't even have the decency to pick up magic. She's a skilled alchemist, though. And beautiful. And a fearsome warrior. Loke will brag about her at most given opportunities, actually, before complaining about her ungratefulness, as if that will mask his obvious love for her despite the gifts and hugs and compliments he keeps giving her ~~(the softie)~~.
