Day 2: Gathering and Hunting

It’s a common misconception that Dragonhome is full of nothing but silt and sand. There are many secret and not-so-secret areas where vegetation and wildlife thrive - Dragonhome is neighbours with the Viridian Labyrinth after all, and beautiful gardens blossom on the borders.

You wander the public gardens, breathing in the scents, listening to the call of birdsong and whispering insects. They make it sound like the trees themselves have something to say.

And then one of them does.

‘I don’t know how Leofric expects us to gather all of this at such short notice!’ the leaves burst out. Some of these things aren’t even in season! I can’t believe he asked us to get all this just one week before the festival!’

You reel backwards, then look up to see a Spiral up in the branches, twisting herself into agitated shapes as she peered at a scroll in her hands.

‘I think I might be able to do something about the ingredients that are out of season,’ said a voice, gentle and placating. ‘But you are right, Abiliene, it’s the quantity that is the problem.’

Could you share the culinary traditions of your flight with us?" he asked. Over the next few hours, Estheren collected a long list of recipes from interviews with various festival-goers. He couldn't vouch for their quality, but at least he had a large quantity. He flew back to the cafe, organizing the sheets of paper as he went. Some of these recipes looked awfully good. He'd have to copy down the one for spiced goat, and that intriguing fruity twist on a classic crème brûlée looked delicious... Estheren pushed his way through the crowd, his proud air clearing dragons out of the way, and triumphantly gave the packet of papers to Beau. "A long journey," he said, "but I have received the recipes you requested!"

She had been coming in for hopes of a moment's rest, but it seemed for naught. She raised her head when she heard and spotted a Wildclaw, trying to make himself as noticeable as possible. Well, it was working quite well. There were already quite q few dragons gathering about, listening to what he had to say. A Coatl emerges from the back of the crowd. He didn't look like another guest; most likely he was part of the staff. Lightbreeze was right, as he spoke calmly to the Wildclaw, only to spot her. After he introduced himself and his partner---er---the Wildclaw, Lightbreeze had a choice to make. "Of course, I can," the Coatl replies with a voice that seems to float in the clouds. Her eyes occasionally wander away from their gazes, as if she was curious at something else besides them. Tangles from her mane falls into her face, observing it and making it nearly unrecognizable. Unless, of course, if her colors didn't discern her well enough. "I've learned well from a friend of mine who hails from the Fire Flight. Directly transferred the recipes over to me, you see." She gestures with her head feathers animatedly. "I can certainly give you examples of the knowledge of cooking passed on to me. You know, a handful of [item=Ashfall Prickler] are a delight to Fire dragons. They like spicy foods, but I suppose that's no surprise. Adding one [item=Smolderpetal] in the very center of the dish will give a nice variety of flavor. Combine that with a hint of [item=Flameweed] and it makes for a fiery vegeterian dish! ...Oh, well, I can't guarantee it's safe for certain dragons." Lightbreeze clears her throat. "Have I said too much? I've been very enthusiastic lately about types of dishes. Although the ones I'm most used to making are seafood dishes. After all, I come from the Sea of Thousand Currents."

Thankfully, this season yielded bountiful harvest, making her much water at the thought of consuming the spiders. Still, she resisted the urge and tried not think about it. When she filled her basket, she finally returned to Coolfire, grinning sheepishly. "I dropped some items on the way, but hope that's okay?" Coolfire sighed and spoke to her in a dry tone. "Look, Turtle, with the way you zip around and about, you ought to spill something or anything. Here." He gave her a handful of [item=Spiral Aloe]. "Make up for the succulents you dropped. Now please go and deliver this to them." Turtle nodded vigorously, and screamed, "YES! AT MY UTMOST!" As she flew away, Coolfire called out after her hoarsely. Now she just had to focus on not dropping anything...

Sure, she was spending time in the gardens, but not farming or harvesting. That was for workdays, not festivals. But somehow, she had gotten herself roped into helping to gather ingredients. Plants. She cursed her kind heart. Luckily for the flightless snapper, her destination in the Viridian Labyrinth was not far. She started with ingredients she knew, picking clawfuls of clovers to put in her basket. Those, along with lilac time sempervivum and daffodils, were plants she knew well from gathering in the Sunbeam Ruins. [center][item=clover][item=lilac time sempervivum][item=daffodil][/center] She checked the list again. They wanted a huge amount of sandhills amaranths, which were relatively easy to find. They also happened to be one of Bridget's favorite foods, and she happily munched on them as she worked, eating easily a quarter of all the plants she found. Next were strawberries. Bridget sighed when she saw the item on her list. Her big snapper feet always ended up trampling berries when she tried to pick them. She easily found a patch, but had a very difficult time harvesting any. With red juice staining her sleeves, she finally gave up, with only a few fruits in her basket--squashed slightly, but still mostly intact. The last item on the list were charged duneberries. Bridget sighed, frustrated, and consigned herself to another day of work, or even several more. Her clan had never managed to gather any of the cherry varieties. The luscious forest would probably hold several patches, but they would be hard to find due to the humid weather, and that didn't even take into account the harvesting difficulty... A thought suddenly struck Bridget. She didn't need to spend her festival time making sure she'd completed this list. This was something she was doing out of the kindness of her heart, but that didn't mean she had to spend days going above and beyond to collect ingredients for these strangers. She had done her best, and the dragons who had sent her would have to be happy with what they got. Suddenly more self-confident than she'd been in weeks, the snapper trudged back through the forest paths, carrying her basket proudly. "You're telling me," Arcana asked, "That you agreed to go fetch these items? Without even knowing what you were getting into? Chlorophos, I do not know how I put up with you. However, I suppose I can help. Gathering plants with telekinesis is easy, you know?"

"No, actually," Chloro started, but clamped their mouth shut when they saw Arcana's fins pinning down. They knew better than to mess with an agitated Fae. Together, they started to gather, roaming through the extensive Labyrinth together.

Finding he could move again, Aloy went and grabbed the duos missing items - wanting to go as fast as dragonly possible - as Aloy wanted nothing more than to get out of the grasp of something unimaginable. “Here you are, the twelve missing daffodils and six missing apples,” Aloy paused giving them the items, “Now, I’ll be off. Day 2 | Gathering and Hunting

Aloy, faced with another task, sighed. He was going to decline, but something made him stop in his tracks - literally.

When Aloy found that he couldn’t move, he shot the Pearlcatcher an astonished look,

“How are you doing that?” Aloy quietly asked her, to which she smiled at him.

Aloy decided not to ask again, as any dragon who shrugged or smiled like it was nothing - usually didn’t want you to know how they did it. Aloy gulped a bit, he knew there was no escaping this. Not with that Pearlcatcher, and Aloy being outnumbered 2:1. Sighing in defeat, he turned to the Spiral.

“I know of where some small things are; like the daffodils, and apples. You seem to have the bigger items on your list ticked off already. So, I can just grab those items from nearby, and then you’ll be all set.” Aloy said, pointing his razor like claw at a nearby clearing - just off the path.

“Here you are, the twelve missing daffodils and six missing apples,” Aloy paused giving them the items,

“Now, I’ll be off. I’m a busy dragon.” Aloy said, you know - like a lair. With that he sprinted off.

Happy (and quite relieved) to continue on his journey.

"I...can't...move!" he groans through gritted teeth. "You're probably just magnetized again, Origenes," growls Ashes, and she leans over and tries to shift him. "Hmm," she mutters. A furrow appears on her brow. Zubeida's feathers bristle. "Kaaaa, you've been entranced! What is this, a list of demands?" She squints fiercely at the scroll. The dragons crane over to read it as well. "It appears to be a shopping list," Ashes rumbles. Origenes suddenly brightens. "Well, that's not too difficult! The Viridian Labyrinth isn't really out of the way, seeing as we were planning to stop by the lair anyhow. "In fact, we could stop by the lair first! We could commandeer Captain Mara's ship or hire someone else. After that, we can just ask around. It shouldn't be too hard to uncover the ingredients we need." [center]~ ~ ~ ~ ~[/center] Some time later, the team sits down, tired and baffled, in a dark glen. They've been on the go for a few days, and while they still have ample time to return, they can't quite seem to find their way out of this particular patch of forest. "Don't like it here," Zubeida whines, and Ashes rumbles in wordless sympathy. Origenes claps his paws. "Come now, we've been lost before! This time it's a little bit stranger, but don't tell me you weren't prepared for this. After all, we've heard peculiar rumors of this part of the Labyrinth, and there've been all sorts of stories..." Zubeida's amber eyes narrow. "Did you drag us here on purpose?" "No, I really was just trying to find those ingredients. Maybe throw in some delicious grapes or pomegranates, too. Those poor ladies were working very hard, after all." Ashes suddenly lifts her head. "Here. Someone is..." The team turns around. There's another Pearlcatcher, almost invisible in the darkness of the trees. She gives them a long, languid stare. "Oh, yes." Origenes' magical senses are blaring like a klaxon, but he ignores them as he holds out the scroll. "And more of these ingredients besides. We're really in a bit of a hurry, so if you could just..." The Pearlcatcher reaches out, gently moves a hanging branch aside. It shows them a long downward slope heading towards some fields, a few prosperous-looking clans. A farming town. "There," she breathes, and then she shuffles away into the darkness. Sunlight plays briefly over her, illuminating the flowers growing over her scales. The team murmurs their thanks, and then they barrel down the slope. Halfway down, they pause...but think better of it and decide not to look back. They're on a mission, after all. [center]~ ~ ~ ~ ~[/center] "We're back! Here's the stuff you asked for.
