Calypso

Calypso slithered surreptitiously through the shallow riverbed, as she gradually made her way towards the ancient log. She peered up at it with an air of uncertainty. For, as an Undertide, she certainly had some obvious... Limitations. Though, what this fierce competitor lacked for in athleticism and agility would be compensated with tremendous passion and heart. For, deep down in her heart of hearts, she knew that gymnastics was a form of art. And that she was slithering with creativity, in spades.

As the musical ensemble begins, she coils her way along the beam, enchanting her audience with her captivating form. She inches closer and closer towards her competitors, taking a moment to size up her competition, before playfully baring her fangs. She shifts her gaze towards her spectators, as she begins to slowly dangle from the log. Dabbling in a rare display of tenderness and strength.

In an ironic twist of fate, the cat was slowly becoming the mouse...

And the time had finally come for this serpent to shed her skin.

Day 5- Gymnastics
83600104_350.png

I've gone a little out of order, but in my defense, Matthan is really fun to write. So here's Helios! She's the sweetpea of Lockesol's council, and both of the twins dote on her like a little sister. Sasha does, too- but she's a little more complicated. Helios is the daughter she wished she'd had- but she already has a daughter, so there's a fair bit of guilt in the thought.

Helios was very very close to biting her nails off.

She tried not to! She really did! She knew it wasn't a good habit, but that ignored the fact that her event was next and oh god what if she fell, everyone would be looking at her-

Someone bumped into her, nearly throwing her head-over-tail, and she relaxed a little when she saw the familiar, murky green scales of the twins. Xingyí, the brother, nosed at her wing, black eyes narrowed in concern.

'Why so scared?'

She laughed a little, a small, defeated sound. Of course they weren't scared. They had their own event, tomorrow- but neither seemed to even acknowledge it. it was just another day, for them. Just a bit of fun. If either one of them failed, they'd just heckle each other and forget about it.

Oh, how she envied them.

She wasn't allowed to forget failure.

She knew how Sasha looked at her. She wasn't her daughter, and never would be. She'd never even met Rina, her real daughter- had only seen her once, tiny blue body weaving through a crowd. She'd been built like a jackal. Only a metre long, but with enough deadly intent that dragons instinctively moved out of her way.

She was just like Sasha. Helios didn't understand it. Sasha should be thrilled to have a daughter like that- small even for a Fae, and already ordering around half of Lockesol like an Imperial. And yet she avoided her, and chose to mentor Helios instead.

Helios felt like she could spend her entire life working and never live up to that decision.

She felt another head bump her side, and Huàgui, the sister of the twins, met her panicked look with a level gaze, no small amount of suspicion glittering in her eyes.

'We do not care for Sasha. We care for our own. You are our own.'

Beside her, Xingyí chittered in agreement.

'You will be fine. There is no death in failure, yes? Why be scared of it, then?'

Huàgui nodded in agreement, chittering back at her brother in approval.

'Very good. Embarrassment will not rid you of us, I am afraid. '

Helios smiled for the first time since that morning. It was thin and sickly, yes, but it was still a smile.

She did a few warm ups at the athletics track, doing a set of jumping jacks and sit-ups to ready herself for the race. Whether or not she did well, it was a great honor participating alongside so many talented dragons! Next, the Skydancer participated in fencing. She had tried the sport a couple of times in her clan, which made her feel pretty confident! Picking up the sabre, she focused on her opponent, waiting for an opportunity to strike and score.

Day 6 - Wrestling Albert was from a long line of wrestlers - REAL wrestlers - not those "professional" wrestlers that were just putting on a silly show. He and his brothers had been taught by his father, while his grandfather looked on and frequently offered his own helpful insights. In theory, she wasn't the type to start fights, but tended to end them. In practice, she did start quite a few. There usually wasn't a referee though, and although she'd gone through the rules fairly thoroughly, she wasn't sure she wouldn't end up using moves that weren't allowed. Which just so happened to be the required number of players for a volleyball team... But tomorrow was another day, for now she had to quieten her thoughts, and trust her instincts... She wasn't easily intimidated, but this was a tad too far from her comfort zone...

Leafy wings, golden eyes, perhaps a Parda by her side... but she wasn't there. The third member of their team was missing, and had been for the entirety of the games so far. She'd hoped her partner would perhaps be there to cheer them on, but it seemed that wasn't the case. "So, it'll just be us then. We can work with this." Sanja turned to one of her other partners, glaring at the Coatl as he pushed up his glasses. Even her other partner seemed calm for the occasion, simply nodding to her fellow Coatl as he spoke. Before Sanja could speak, Raguel piped up. "She wouldn't have been able to play on our team anyways. We could stand on each other's shoulders and still find ourselves under her chin. In this event, that'd be an unfair advantage. If we're to compete honorably, we'd have to keep her in the stands." Sanja bristled at that, her eyes narrowed. He was right, of course. Raguel tended to be right when that was the last thing she wanted him to be. She just wanted to be able to focus on this game. However, she was instead left worrying about whether poor Ariel was alright. She wandered these lands for years in the past. The idea of something actually endangering her... She hesitated, giving the pet some good luck pets before she turned back to her Wildclaw companion. Raguel nodded to that, motioning for one of their students to keep an eye on the belongings they couldn't take into the competition. "We have to trust her and her own skills. We're all worried for Ariel, but we need to focus on this match. We can play in honor of all the work she put in to practice with us. And when she comes back around, we can celebrate our hard work together." Before the Wildclaw could speak, the whistle sounded, and the referee motioned for the others to head onto the half court. The three looked to each other, nodded, then walked up to face off against their current opponents. They all looked a bit worried, but they didn't really have a choice now. Day 6: Wrestling It was finally reaching the end of the Greenskeeper Gathering, with only two days remaining. Even so, the excitement of the Sornieth Summer Games had not waned. Dragons still poured into the area. Some of them had been present for the previous days, while others were only just arriving, but all had the same goal. Many of those dragons noticed his agitation and assumed that the odd dragon was nervous, or maybe even frightened of the much larger dragons arriving for the event. Some even smiled, anticipating an easy victory. Only a few noticed the narrowed eyes, and calculating look. Even fewer connected these traits with their own appearance at the Ring. To those few, Mystery gave a silent, unseen, nod of acknowledgement. They were the ones who were truly worthy opponents, dragons he was honored to find himself fighting against. As for the others…The old fighter did not sneer. It was not becoming of a true warrior to insult his adversary, however lacking that adversary proved to be. But dragons who did not even bother to assess their opponents properly were not worthy to be considered fighters at all. Brawlers, perhaps. Individuals who barreled in and counted on their size and strength to win them the day, without bothering with any strategy or finesse. But this was not a brawl, or even a cave fight. It was Wrestling. A sport that, in Mystery’s opinion, depended as much on an intelligent plan, with each move tailored to the weaknesses--and strengths--of that particular opponent, as it did on the physical strength in one’s own body. Those….individuals…who thought otherwise would soon regret their mistake. Mystery had been teaching lessons to young fools who thought to show off their muscles for years. Tonight would be no different. The loud bell singled the first warning, and the end of the Mirror’s pacing. Mystery turned, noting that his first opponent was one of those young bravados rather than an experienced warrior. Good. Perhaps it would shock some of the others into considering him a true threat. He much preferred to have an actual competition after all, other than an easy bout. How could he test his mettle if things ended too early? The answer, he soon found, was that he could not. The bout was over in seconds. The young idiot--NOT a proper adversary at all--had clearly assumed that brute force would work…and been unpleasantly surprised when it did not. Rolling his eyes, Mystery stalked over to the edge of the Ring, picking up the waiting water skin. That had not even been amusing. The only good thing to come out of it was the shock on the faces of the others. That, and the now announced identity of his next opponent. Turning as the next bell sounded for a different set of dragons, Mystery scanned the crowd, looking for his new adversary. A moment later his eyes locked with the other standing on the opposite side of the Wrestling area, calculating look to calculating look. In the Ring, two young fools pawed at each other, while others who did not understand the true art of the sport cheered them on. But between this dragon and Mystery there was no sound, and no smiles, as they examined each other, neither one giving an inch in that silent test of wills. Time seemed to stop as the moment stretched on, broken only by the buzzer signaling the end of the comedy in the Ring. Only then did the other dragon move, inclining his head slightly as he stalked into the Ring. The expression that slid over the Mirror’s face this time was definitely not a sneer. Slowly, he set his water skin down, inclining his own head in turn. Straightening up, the old fighter flexed his paws before moving with silent grace to stand opposite the other dragon. At last, he was facing a worthy opponent. Someone who would make this a true challenge. And he was more than ready to meet it. Grimly Mystery settled into his “ready” stance and waited for the bell to sound… (A little late, but I made it...)
