War, Month 1: Guardian Moon: How to Train your Dimitri*

* Training methods in the summary were chosen for comedic effect and are not intended to be a serious guide to training Chihuahua’s please learn how to actually train your dog-man.

Gilbert has largely taken charge of the rebellion. Mostly because Dimitri is disinterested in anything that’s not his ANGST and because outside of battle and teaching I have no agency. We get to explore the new Garrach Mach and its mostly the same but with an occasional pile of rubble and way fewer people. What is also different is that Dimitri is skipping all his classes and extracurricular activities, I can’t teach him, I can’t eat lunch with him, I can’t even have tea with him. This would be very upsetting if Dimitri’s power level wasn’t set so ridiculously high to compensate. I’ve resorted to Operant Conditioning to get him to do what I want in battle which is nice because I get to give the other children the experience he’d otherwise steal. If he’s a good boy he gets an Edelgard stuffed toy to rip to shreds. It’s his favorite.

Inevitably the empire notices the suspicious new military stronghold and sends out General Randolph and his sister to root us out. It’s a very similar situation to the battle 5 years ago but this time we have a new weapon… COMBUSTION SWORD WOMAN! We escort this champ of a warrior to a ballista and she uses it to yeet herself into the main fray. There she explodes setting fire to the entire battlefield and leaving the armored units vulnerable for all our mighty hammer users. We will never forget you Combustion Sword Woman, may your sword ever burn bright.

We capture Randolph at Dimitri’s request. Unfortunately Chihuahua Dimitri isn’t one for the Geneva Convention. He begins the torture mentally trying to convince the General that he’s just as monstrous as Dimitri himself has become. What’s the difference between a vigilante and a general anyway? Both kill, both leave loved ones unable to return to their loved ones for a cause. Who is Randolph to put himself on a high horse and call Dimitri a beast???

I decide to step in when Dimitri get a little too excited about torturing a man to death.

“NO DIMITRI! BAD DOG!” I yell throwing a towel over his head while blaring some medieval equivalent of a bullhorn. It’s important to disorient violent animals if you want to prevent or stop a violent altercation safely. “What did I say earlier about playing with your food? NOT TO DO IT!” I stab Randolph to death quickly, “You see if you can’t play nice then you don’t get any playtime at all. GOT IT?!”

“Don’t you think you’re being a bit too harsh?” Gilbert murmurs beside me as Dimitri runs away growling.

“HECK NO. One needs to discourage unsavory behavior as soon as you see it happening or they think they can get away with it every time! You’re too soft on him!”

“Well, I think you’re being mean. Hear boy! That’s a good boy! Do you wanna pick the end goal for our army? You can pick reunifying the kingdom or invading the empire What sounds good to you?”

Dimitri’s otherwise lifeless eyes get a glitter in them. “The Empire? Kill Edelgard? GET HER HEAD FOR PAPA?!”

“That’s right we’ll go get Edelgard if your a good boy ok?” Gilbert says affirmingly.

“I’LL HAVE HER HEAD ON A SPIIIIIIIIIIIIIKE!” Dimitri runs off to do who knows what and I confront Gilbert.

“Just HOW are we going to invade the empire RIGHT NOW?! You know we’ll end up fighting two fronts with the Empire on our front and their Dukedom at our back! We need to focus on the kingdom 1st so we can fight her with our whole strength! We don’t even have enough food to feed the army we do have!:”

Gilbert shrugs, “It’ll be fine we’re going to write to Rodrigue for food and stuff. Plus the two front thing won’t be an issue if we kill Edelgard and end the war quickly. Plus we’ll get to rescue Karen sooner!

“Gilbert” I say flatly, “Gibert, Gilbert, Gilby Gilly Ding Dilly Doodle, I am horrified and offended at anyone having the slightest thought that I care about what happens to Karen at all. I am in charge now and I say THE HECK WITH KAREN.”

“Well, it’s what the boy wants so we’re going to the empire as soon as we get provisions!” Gilbert leaves looking infuriatingly pleased with himself. Why oh why do I have to share power with the world’s worst father?

see you get nonsense like this when a month has no paralogues

Dimitri and Sylvain promote to the Sniper class! Hapi promotes to Warlock. Mercedes promots to Trickster( Lucky 7 looks broken) and after 6 years of training and battling Constance finally promotes to Brigand. I am so proud. Raphael and Annette pass their Final Exams.

Other Notes: Felix is genuinely upset about Dimitri’s deterioration and I realize that he’s been Tsundere for Chihuahua’s this whole time. This is appropriate as Chihuahua’s are the most Tsundere of dogs themselves. Annette Calls out her dad for abandoning and ignoring her for years and he says something along the lines of “I abandoned you so I have no choice but to keep abandoning you.” Smooth. Both Ingrid and Mercedes are having trouble with dad’s wanting them to marry instead of following their Strong Independent Woman dreams.

War, Month 2: Pegasus Moon: Rodrigue is best dad.

Rodrigue has written back, he is willing to help us. Unfortunately due to the precarious position of his house the help will need to be given clandestinely. He suggests that we meet him at Mount Ailel. An actual volcano that is directly compared to their hell. I notice a soldier nearby start to mutter the name of our meeting location but it’s probably fine.

We get access to a paralogue! Unfortunately, it’s Annette’s paralogue and Annette is by FAR my worst unit. It’s not her fault she’s just been treated ABYSSMALLY by RNG. her stat growth wants her to be a magic unit SO BAD YOU GUYS. But she’s stuck being a cavalier… anyway I want to wait until literally the last second to counter this. So we won’t be tackling that until Harpstring Moon. Instead, we tackle Bandit battles that make it rain gold so I can actually afford a new battalion. (I’m keeping the maid battalion though Def-up is good and maids following me around are funny).

I also spend time shipping Manuela with Seteth. She usually ends my runs alone no matter how hard I try and I’m starting to feel bad for her. I think her and Seteth’s B-support is really nice too since they bond over their shared faith. Her interactions with Flayn are really cute too! Dimitri tells me to go away but that’s not how this relationship works son. Gilbert finally gets cornered by Annette and he says he’s avoiding her because he feels like a failure for not stopping the Tragedy of Duscar and then running away from his family for ten years. Well I say continuing to run away isn’t going to solve the problem and I think Annette agrees with me.

When we get to Ailiel We have a talk with Gilbert about how there’s a story about the volcano being a sign of the Goddesses wrath and a portal to hell/purgatory where sins get burned away. Dimitri thinks sins being burned away is nonsense. Gilbert admits that the story is not corroborated by scripture (good to know) but that for some lost souls bathing in lava to wash away sins might be a hopeful thing.

Gilbert.

Just talk to your daughter more please.

SUDDENLY AMBUSH! A spy must have told them where we were going to meet! I KNEW MUTTERING SOLDIERS COULDN’T BE TRUSTED! A dukedom loyalist called Rowe has sent his top knight Lord Gwendal to murder us all. But he’ll have to stop us from murdering him first! I also get to use Trickster Mercedes for the 1st time and I must say that she is a treat. She can switch between offensive magic and the Levin Sword interchangeably, heal, is harder to hit than just about anything, and has animation that includes FINGER GUNS! (If any y’all have DLC make Mercedes a Trickster.) Suddenly Lord Rodrigue comes to save the day! Fortunately he packs a punch. Unfortunately he has the defenses of a wet tissue. We manage to barely prevent him from dying with liberal gambit uses and a desperate Physic from Hapi. Soon we corner Lord Rodrigue and kill him. He seems pretty happy about it though? He was one of those Proud Warrior types y’see.

We reunite with Rodrigue and he’s just as awesome here as he was in Felix’s paralogue. No he’s MORE AWESOME. He is really happy to see his son and Dimitri… actually smiles for like 0.5 seconds?! Astounding. Rodrigue also tries to reconnect with his biological son but immediately puts his foot in his mouth by implying that Felix looked for Dimitri out of duty or something stupid like that. Felix found Dimitri because he wanted to dang it.

It turns out that Rodrigue is also in favor of liberating the kingdom before fighting the empire directly which makes me happy. He’s also not taking ANY of Dimitri’s sass which is AMAZING. Dimitri balks at this because of REVENGE and THE GHOSTS. But Rodrigue shuts that down and retorts that compassion for the living are more important. For some reason, this prompts Dimitri to make the illogical leap that prioritizing the well-being of his subjects over immediately hunting down Edelgard is equivalent to forgiving Edelgard wholesale which is… not true at all? Nevertheless Dimitri is not budging and so Rodrigue has to concede because of chivalry and duty to the king and stuff like that. Still, he challenged Dimitri’s warped worldview in a VERY satisfying way and clearly has more influence on him then Gilbert or me so it’s VERY welcome news when he says he’s joining our forces (but not our roster alas). Hooray for the best of Dimitri’s living dad’s!

Rodrigue also gives Dimitri his family’s holy relic Areadbhar which is a cutlass that was tied to a stick. It’s so cool that Dimitri actually thanks Rodrigue but it sounds like he’s almost forgotten how to thank people or show appreciation. Aw Dimitri...

We discuss which route to Enbarr would be the most tactically sound. We can’t go directly South because there are mountains in the way and that’s too much trouble. The West is also out because of the Dukedom and a legendarily impassible fortress. The East though seems ideal. It’s through Alliance territory which is unlikely to bring us much trouble because the lords are likely too busy being passive-aggressive to each other to bother with us. We will take the Bridge of Myrridean to get to Imperial territory, pass through Grondar Field where we had the Battle of Lion and Eagle, and finally take down Enbarr and Edelgard hopefully. There is the hiccup of the Bridge of Myrrdean being controlled by the Pro-Empire Count Gloucester but Rodrigue gives us the FANTASTIC idea of getting Claude to distract him for us and I’m ALL FOR working with Claude. Heck yes.

Ingrid, Petra, and Constance pass their advanced exams. Dimitri passes his master exam and Raphael Promotes to War Monk!

Other Notes: Felix beats us in a duel. It’s the closest he can get to beating his brother Glenn since he’s, y’know, dead. Ingrid sympathizes with Dimitri since she also harbors anger towards Glenn’s killers. Ashe Roasts Sylvain. Alois is scared of ghosts. Constance tries to goad Mercedes into restarting House Martinez.

Oh man,,, cavalier Annette sounds,, not good :( Trickster Mercedes sounds interesting though :0 also I didn't know trickster has finger guns,, on my next run I'm definitely making someone a trickster just to see that lol

also also does Manuela even?? Have paired endings?? She always ends up alone in my runs too and,, it's sad,, especially since love is like literally the only thing she wants :,))

Cavalier Annette? That sounds rough... I had trouble during her paralogue during my first playthrough, and keep in mind this was Normal Casual!

@Ailaris Yes, welcome to the chaos train.

@Viivie Cavalier Annette hurts my soul. and if the legends are true Mauela is indeed pairable. The problem is that she's usually a very low priority pairing. BUT I BELIEVE IN YOU MANUELA! SEDUCE SETETH WITH ALL YOUR SOUL!!!!

The finger guns are 110% worth it.
War monk/clerics also punch magic and that's also fun.

@MaplesHaiku I remember having issues in my previous Hard/Casual run as well. It's next month and I've been doing extra battles every chance I get so hopefully it will go ok. there's one paralogue I'm REALLY not looking forward too even more though.

War, Month 3: Lone Moon: Hypocrisy is our Achilles heel

I decide it’s high time to talk to my favorite dude Rodrigue. We begin to talk about Rodrigue’s past and how it makes him relate to Dimitri. He lost his son Glenn in the battle of Duscar so he feels like he understands we Dimitri is so obsessed with avenging the dead. It makes him feel hypocritical when he tries to correct Dimitri’s worldview but we both agree it has to be done. We also find out that he knows exactly why Felix is mad at him… and he agrees with Felix that what he says is wrong! Felix, communicate with thine father he is not as bad as you think. We also get confirmation that Claude is going to help us further with the war effort. Thanks, Claude! I love you.

We get another paralogue… it’s from [i[Karen[/i]. I am also procrastinating it because as soon as I saw the prompt I got PTSD from a previous run that was on casual. We’ll probably have to tackle it eventually but… DON’T MAKE ME REGRET THIS KAREN. Instead, we unlock a new merchant that sells me good food and prezzies and grind up on money and levels.

Our army finally reaches the Great Wall of Myrrdian! There are Imperial Soldiers standing guard but that’s fine. Just another Tuesday really. For some reason, we decide that right before a battle is the best time to try to lecture Dimitri about vengeance. I don’t understand ourselves sometimes. Unfortunately, it fails HARD because Dimitri remembers when we took vengeance on Solon and Kronya. Whoops, Rodrigue help I am also a hypocrite and it’s ruining everything! Instead, Felix at his most Tsundere decides that he should take a crack at reforming Dimitri. After all, he’s many things but he’s not a hypocrite. Felix’s view is that vengeance is pointless because the dead are gone and they’re not coming back. One’s efforts should be focused on the living who are still and definitely here. Dimitri retorts that if that’s the case then morning or burying the dead is also completely pointless. Felix snaps under this illogic and gives up on the whole endeavor then and there. He says We should ignore Dimitri and focus on bringing peace to the land. But really since we are following this fool we’re probably all going to die. Thanks Felix, I knew your silver tongue would be just the thing we needed.

We start the battle and we have to kill ALL THE LEADERS! So far that’s just a Wyvern rider called Ladislavia and some random cavalier. Shouldn’t be too hard. We’re then ambushed by lord Acheron and his soldiers oh n- haha just kidding they died immediately to all my magic users and Sylvain.

The actual threat from the Alliance turns out to be Lorenz, a former student of Garrech Mach’s Golden Deer house and currently allied with the Empire. He’s actually really polite when he attacks us and that reminds me that I actually like Lorenz (his character growth is good ok?) so the fact that I have to kill him to finish the map is a little sad. He actually ends up being annoyingly tanky and he actually forces me to use my one Divine Pulse to save Seteth. But we get him in the end. He’s the last to go.

Dimitri doesn’t seem as satisfied with himself as usual. Dare I say he seems conflicted? Are our dogged attempts… making progress? I ask him why are you so glum my dude? He doesn’t really know so I ask him if he regrets killing people. He says heck no but in a way that doesn’t seem 100% earnest… more like 80% earnest.

Rodrigue, Dimitri, and I hear some commotion and go to see what is going on. There’s a girl who wants to join our forces. Foot-soldier, cook, scullery-maid. It doesn’t matter she wants in. She also seems scared of Dimitri but that’s understandable, Dimitri is a scary dude. Rodrigue is against her coming in but when Dimitri discovers that her reason is to get REVENGE against some guy who killed her brother he goes, “Finally someone I understand.” and lets her in the army. Glad that’s settled.

Petra promotes to Swordmaster and I master fortress knight and let myself reclass to Enlightened One. Ashe passes his Advanced exam and Felix masters the Priesthood and becomes a Bishop.

Other Notes: Gilbert attempts the hopeless task of teaching Alois how to fish. Manuela considers going after Sylvain briefly but thankfully the game and I are in complete agreement about that being a NOTP. The leader of the Fearghus Dukedom is probably the person who abducted and experimented on Hapi and that makes me… angry. Ignatz wants to paint Saint Cethlean and Flayn has all sorts of info on the subject. Some of it seems to contradict what is commonly told though.

MVPs this month: Annette, Raphael, Seteth, Hapi, DimitriX2
Fun fact: I never got your other dreaded paralogue in my first run. I think you need C support with Karen to get it, and I never got it. First time I did that one was on my Golden Deer playthrough, and I don't remember it being super hard, just tedious. Good luck, though!

@MaplesHaiku I'm just remembering the robots... all the robots... so many robots.

Since I lost 5 people to Sothis's paralogue I guess I'm just being overcautious with monster maps.
