Personally, I HATE stained All my projects need it, and it's a gem gene T.T Edit: Wait a second! @obliviousally our dragons look alike! Another dragon that is been with pinkish stained XD

I feel like it's only necessary when you want to fix your dragons' color without having to scatter them? There are so so many colors out there, you rarely ever need a blue lighter/darker/greener/bluer than turquoise for example because it already exists.

But I do love the concept of it. I don't think it's very necessary with a giant color wheel.

Wow, that were a lot of responses. Thank you all! It would be a bit much to answer everyone individually, sorry, so I'll just sum it up. Most people seem to like stained, but think it is to expensive to buy from the marketplace. They would however buy dragons with the existing gene, given that it works (wich is objective, since we all have diffrent senses of beauty). Some of you showed me a lot of georgeous stained dragons and I must say I feel better now about my own stained dragon. This is Cornelia, who I bought as a little hatchling and fangirled over because she has stained. Then I gave her jupiter, because I didn't like her with cherub. She gave me three stained Nocs and will hopefully give me many more stained dragons in the future. @Xylom you made me think about perspective beauty, how some people love Tundras (like me) and others can't seem to stand them. How everyone seems to love Coatls and how Mirrors, Ridgebacks and Snappers are often classified as "ugly". Especially Ridgebacks. Maybe I should see if I can't find a Ridgeback I would want to keep. I could turn it into a breeding challange, maybe. Or just see how Ridgebacks could look.

I definitely think Stained has an effect and can turn up some pretty cool results, but I also think it would have grown a lot more in popularity had it not been followed up fairly soon with the colorwheel expansion. People were hankering for new colors and Stained could do that, but then we got actual new colors. If Stained had come out a year before? Hoo-boy, I think it would have exploded once people realized what you can do with it.

It depends I think. I like it personally like it, though I only have one or two with it. My clan's current matriarch has it and it looks great on her tbh. It makes her colors a lil less harsh.
I think it has mostly to do with how expensive it is versus what you actually get for the money. People are reluctant to spend so many gems on a gene that simple. I've seen it look amazing on some dragons and I've seen it just wash others out.
^ Exactly this. What it is isn't bad, but for its price range it's not worth the amount of gems it costs to purchase a scroll from the gem market in a lot of people's opinion. It's 1200 gems in cost, and personally that's too much. Especially considering it's one of those genes that either works really well or makes hardly any difference at all to colouring. Now if it had been a Baldwin brew, or even treasure price I think it would have been received a little better. There are some great examples in this thread alone of how great it can look, it just doesn't have that 'wow factor' to me to warrant the price tag it has.

I love it personally, but it doesn't work on any of my dragons. It just muddys the colors and makes it look terrible. Here's a random derg the scry gave me; and here she is with stained; Not so pretty anymore! But, I've seen it work beautifully too! Nobody wants to tell you why discipline is so important. Discipline is the strongest form of self-love. It is ignoring current pleasures for bigger rewards to come. It's loving yourself enough to give yourself everything you've ever wanted.
When it works, it works but when it does not.... uggghhh. -Anything white/near white DOES NOT WORK. Example. This is Rita, Crim/Crim/Maize and she looks like she's been hit with a whiteout stick. For many, many, many colors, it just does not DO much anything, just adds a very slight subtle color. What colors are these? This is yet another example of washout and the color is cantaloupe. And this? Thant's NAVY stained, but it turns the dragon purple. Then there's the fact that stained only has a few colors, Purple, yellow, blue etc. There may be 177 colors, but only a few basic colors show. Can you tell the difference between these three stains? I have a couple ideas for dragons that absolutely would not work without stained...but yeah, I wouldn't want to actually have to buy it. That's a lot of gems. People who have gene projects are gonna put off buying stained in favor of other gem genes that seem more obviously "worth it." And if lots of people come at it with that perspective, we end up without so many stained dragons on the market.

I appreciate that it gave me something to do with my custom progen. Before it, choosing White and Obsidian felt like a mistake, cus no genes looked good with them.
