Draco’s Backstory Draco had grown up in the Snowsquall Tundra, he was among the smaller dragons in his clan, and was often teased for that. One day after an afternoon of hunting, Draco returned to his clan to find it in ruins, there building were ablaze and the walls on the houses were torn to the ground, Draco was shocked until he saw his own house, in the mess he saw his dad passed out and bleeding out from his head, when he tried to wake him up he wouldn’t respond, Draco was so distraught that he ran to The Fortress Of Ends, he knew that the people that ventured there never returned, but that didn’t stop him, he kept running and running until he couldn’t, but just before he passed out, he caught a glimpse of a tundra walking towards him. I brought you back because you probably would’ve frozen to death if I didn’t take you.” “Thanks, but you should’ve left me there...” “Ugh stop it with all this “You should’ve left me” your life means more so get over it!” “Ok! I’m sorry geez...” “It’s ok but still you shouldn’t throw what you have away” Draco and Eirwen talked for a little more and he got settled in the village, from what he’d heard no one inhabited The Fortress Of Ends, at least that’s what the dragons always said. Years had passed and Draco stayed with his clan in The Fortress Of Ends, but it’s hit him one day, he couldn’t stay here, he had to find out what happened to his old clan, one day he ventured back and saw his abandoned clan, there was only one house that was inhabited, it was his house! He was ecstatic! He ran up to the door and knocked, a nocturne answered the door and said “Hello? Who are you?” By appearance Draco had no idea who it was but then when he heard his voice he knew “Dad...?” “Who?” “Dad it’s me! Draco!” “I’m sorry but I don’t think we’ve met...” “But dad it’s me! Also what happened to you? What are you wearing...? Is that a dress?” “Yeah what you got a problem with it?!” “No it’s just-“ “Listen I don’t know you and if you’re gonna come parading in here and insulting my outfit you can leave. Goodbye.” “Wait!” But he slammed the door on him. Draco was upset, he turned to leave but was blocked by Ruavna. If you haven’t heard, ever since the accident they lost their memory, and think they’re completely different people.” “How do you know that Ruavna?” “I don’t know if you know this, but I actually lived here before you were born, I eventually changed clans but I was good friends with your parents. It’s a shame that the accident made them forget, but I was actually thinking of bringing them back to our clan.” “I can’t do it...” “what can’t you do?” “I can’t live there with them, it would be too much pain for me to see them everyday and not remember who I am. I have to leave this clan, somewhere far away from here where I will never see them again.” “If that’s what you really want I know I good clan in the Starwood Strand.” “What is the Starwood Strand...?” “I’m surprised they haven’t taught you about it in your lessons... but it’s the forest area of the Starfall Isles, there’s a clan there called Elfores, they’re very welcoming and a friend of mine told me about it. That’s where you belong, and if you do see Nebula, please tell him I say hi” Draco took Ruavna’s advice and started his journey to The Elfores Clan, along his journey, Draco saw what looked like a clock just walking around, he was utterly confused, he walked up to it, and it started hissing at him, it must’ve been enchanted or something Draco thought, he actually seemed to kinda recognize the clock, he remembered hearing about it somewhere, probably from his lessons, from what he could remember it was very hard to find as it only appeared in the Night of the Nocturne. Draco took it as a sign and started trying to calm it down “Hey, shhh, shhh, it’s ok I’m not gonna hurt you.” The clock seemed calmer now “Where are you going? Are you lost?” The clock just spun his hands rapidly, Draco assumed this meant no. “Ok well if you want to tag along I’m going to the Starwood Strand.” The clock started following Draco and they kept going towards the Starfall Isles. [item=tick-tock] Draco finally made it with his companion and was greeted with open arms, he saw Nebula and delivered Ruavna’s Message. Draco looked down at his clock and said “I never actually named you, what about... Toothy!” The click spun his hands rapidly showing excitement. “It’s decided then, from now your name is Toothy.” Draco had picked out a place to live and some brand new clothes, and lived happily ever after with the Alforers.

Today the heady warm scent of freshly baked bread is irresistible. The week is drawing to a close, but the crowd isn’t dying out in the slightest, it, in fact it's growing every day. It’s late afternoon, and surprisingly there still haven’t been any major disasters or fires engulfing any stations. There have been a few shouts and screams echoing out as a dish collapses or fails in some form. Latona lingers for a few moments at each station, providing commentary or just watching. Sitting at the judge’s table are the three familiar faces, glasses of water half drunk before them. Raith’s main has been braided again, a few purple flowers woven in, clashing with his disgruntled expression. Before the sun sets this time, Latona is gathering everyone’s attention, a few interns scurrying off to the sides of the tent, a hush settling down. ”Good evening dragons and drakes! We’re edging ever closer to the end of the competition. Our leaders are making their mark at the head of the group, but never give up. Tonight, as you’ve all guessed, is about that lovely sub-category of cooking known as baking. Let’s get started!! ----- ----- [columns] ??????????????????????????????????? [nextcol]Bay 1: - Juvia @yakusoku15 ???????????????????????????????????????????????????? [nextcol]Peanut Butter Blossoms.[/columns] L: Baking is a little different from cooking, in that you usually make this dish, then cook it and then it’s done. N: A very cute little cookie. Unfortunately, baking is difficult to get right. One must practice a recipe many times to get it right. A: I think this chef needs to practice quite a bit more. These are a little heavy on the flour, and the temperature was a little low for the cooking. R: It tastes really dry and crumbly, due to the increased flour. Personally I’d scratch the recipe. It’d take a long time to fix this. L: Well how about some scores then huh? Peanut Butter Blossoms are not - as it turns out - flowers coated in peanut butter. R: I think these are an up. The soft pastry is a nice contrast to the jams. A: The whole thing is very sweet. The jams are naturally sweet, and the pastry is extremely sweet. N: Not to mention how haphazard these look. Kolaches should look neat and even, but these are look rushes and as if they were made without care. Some are overflowing with jam, others are lacking. L: Well how about some scores then huh? The kolach was traditionally a wedding desert. The mince has been simmered perfectly, and the tastes are beautifully harmonious. N: The pastry is quite crisp, and contains the contents of the pastry nicely, without the gravy sogging through. They are a little extra crisp on the edges, giving it a slightly dry taste, but it’s altogether quite nice. A: They taste alright, but largely due to the large amount of salt used to tenderise the meat. It could also use some vegetables, as a usual pastie would. L: Well how about some scores then huh? Pasties come in vegetable and meat varieties, but often with both. Unfortunately that means that the bread also hasn’t been baked properly. A: The edible parts are quite nice, it’s a shame there’s so much here to be wasted though. All round a really healthy treat. N: The appeal of a muffin, is the crispy top that has just begun to spill over the edge of the cupcake liner. This chef hasn’t cared much for the unity or niceness of the presentation. R: They taste alright to me. They’re not very sweet, and the banana is very strong, but it’s alright. But the vibrant rainbow colours of the icing are magnificent. R: The icing is very sweet, and it’s about the only thing you can taste. A: It’s sooo sweet. The entire festival has always smelt good, the Blasterchef tent in particular, full of the rich aromas of spice, of meat.

Peanut Butter Blossoms.

L: Baking is a little different from cooking, in that you usually make this dish, then cook it and then it’s done.

L: Niah’s scores have been a little up and down so far.

Meat Pasties.

L: One of our more savoury dishes for today. We left this round deliberately vague to encourage diversity.
R: He digs into the pastie, his eyes roll back a little and his eyelids flutter. This is delightful.

N: The appeal of a muffin, is the crispy top that has just begun to spill over the edge of the cupcake liner. This chef hasn’t cared much for the unity or niceness of the presentation.

R: For the rest of that, It’s about 1.3 meters. I wonder how much of it I can fit in my mouth?
A: The baguette is very dry. I don’t think they timed their baking time well with when they were serving it. It’s several hours if not a day since it’s been cooked, so it’s borderline stale.

N: Aren’t fire ants venomous?

Incorporeal Hamantaschen.

L: Incorporeal substance is a bit of an enigma.
N: He is staring down at the pastries He seems to be hypnotised by the vaguely shifting substance.
A: It’s also a tricky ingredient to work with, so this is very impressive.
R: Incorporeal substance has a surprisingly sweet flavour, similar to blueberries.
A: This chef really knew what they were doing. The jam made out of the substance is particularly sweet, but they’ve made the pastry more a savoury puff pastry. It allows the jam to be the focus.
L:Well how about some scores huh? Incorporeal substance is occasionally difficult to get your hands on, but it’s well worth it.

A: Bakewell tarts are one of the healthier tart options, the raspberry jam provides most of the sweetness it needs. The ground and shaved almonds in the tarts filling are unsalted, so it’s actually quite healthy. N: It’s difficult to make a tart like this that won’t crumble and start falling apart. Unfortunately, this tart’s been cooked a little long so the crust is a little burnt, affecting the taste. R: The taste is a little lacking, and it could be sweeter. This bread has also been glazed in honey, making it shinier and sweeter. N: It’s also both dense and fluffy. That’s because it has been thoroughly kneaded before being baked. It’s common to over knead bread, causing it to be too thick to cook in the middle, but this one hasn’t. It’s a very nice taste, and a very nice texture, one of the better sponge cakes that I’ve eaten in quite a while. It’s just… boring though. N: And by serving it in such a rich broth, after stir-frying them, the flavours are enriched. R: It’s lacking though. Shiitake mushrooms and Konnyaku are key ingredients in Kenchin-Jiru, but they’re out of season. As such the dish lacks the unique texture and taste they both add. L: Number 31 has been steadily crawling through the ranks.
N: Cornbread has never been particularly interesting, especially without honey like this one. It’s nice and fluffy, a good density but rather tasteless.
A: I’m quite happy they haven’t added honey, as it just adds a whole lot of sugar, and cornbread isn’t particularly healthy anyway. Corn is naturally full of sugar and starch, neither of which are good for keeping carbs low.
R: I think you either need to focus on one factor or the other - health or flavour. By trying to go for both in a dish like this, you end up meeting neither target.

Prosciutto Bread.

L: Ham and bread have gone together for a long time. How will this dish live up to the time-trued combination?
A: Prosciutto is a particularly salted ham, designed to last. So it’s not as healthy as fresh ham on bread.
N: Nor has the ham been very well distributed. You can often get entire bites without much ham, or bites with a lot of ham. It’s not a dish one would serve in a restaurant.
R: The meat is cured well though, and you can tell it was a fairly good cut. It might not be fancy or healthy, but it’s good quality.
L:Well how about some scores huh? Prosciutto is typically taken from the hind leg of a pig, and is served uncooked.

Cannoli.

L: We had some cannoli earlier in our desert round. It scored a little low from memory.
A: This one has a whole lot of choc chips, almost more choc chips than anything else here. They’re also milk chips, rather than dark chocolate making it a whole lot sweeter.
R: But the savoury flavour to the pastry helps to mute the over sweetness of the filling. Which, might I add, is very well done. Nicely blended and perfectly smooth.
N: They are quite pleasant to eat, small enough to eat in one bite, meaning there’s no mess caused by crushing the pastry and spilling the filling.
L:Well how about some scores huh? The choc chip cannoli is the most common, but pistachio, almonds and honeycomb are common alternatives.

Pumpkin Muffins.

L: We have one of our strongest competitors up next.
N: They’re not very interesting. A little bit uneven and cracked on top as well.
R: But they taste great. Sweetened with a little bit of sugar to head off the intense pumpkin taste. By using butternut pumpkins, it’s a bit of a sweeter taste anyway.
A: Because of the sweet nature of the pumpkin, they don’t need too much sugar to sweeten the muffins. And by using actual pumpkin and not a spice blend or flavouring, these have all the nutrition of pumpkin.
L:Well how about some scores huh? Pumpkins are a type of squash, which are all gourds. They grow on vines, but pumpkins are heavy enough that the vines usually grow along the ground.

Cream Cheese Cornbread Casserole.

L: Una had a bit of trouble yesterday. Is this the beginning of a pattern?
A: There’s so many carbs in this. Cornbread is bad enough but adding in cream cheese, which is all just full of saturated fats by the way, it’s so overwhelmingly unhealthy.
R: Which is a shame because it is delicious. It’s a nice combination of flavours, the soft, rich flavours of the cream cheese contrasting nicely with the drier taste of the cornbread.
N: It’s a nice blend of colours as well. You can see the majority of the casserole has been blended thoroughly, but when assembling the dish they added a little bit of unmixed cream cheese, leaving snowy white tendrils wisping through.
L:Well how about some scores huh? Casserole is a nice way of serving a dish that might otherwise not stand up very well.

Apple Strudel.

L: Strudels are more common around winter time, they’re great for warming you up.
R: I’ve always loved them, the warm spice of the cinnamon, and the small bursts of intense flavour from each sultana is just marvelous in contrast to the sweet-sour apples. The pastry is also incredibly flaky and light, but has crunch and thickness to compliment the filling.
A: It’s a little sweet, a lot of sugar went into the filling and the pastry. But it is delicious.
N: It’s a little rough around the edges, and definitely a recipe perfected at home. The dusting of sugar on top is a little unnecessary.
L:Well how about some scores huh? Sultana’s are just dried grapes, so are raisins and currants. They are usually differentiated by their size - the type of grape is less important.

N: They are very cute. Little red velvet cakes with icing dribbled down the rivelets in an almost perfect manner. A couple of perfectly placed almond slivers as well. Such fine work on such tiny little cakes.
A: A little sugary, but I love how cute they are. The almond slivers help to limit the sweetness, and they are delicious.
R: They are very cute. I’d prefer actual sized cakes, because these are incredibly small, but incredibly delicious.

L: We had some cookies from a front line contender earlier this afternoon, and they were a little disappointing. Can someone beat them?
A: The portions are just wrong, way too much sugar, way too little butter. They’re falling apart, and not in the good cookie way.
R: The choc chip density is good, and the cookie’s have been cooked enough so that they are just starting to melt a little.
N: Apart from the mix up in measuring, they could’ve been pretty nice cookies. It’s a shame.

Bakewell Tart.

L: Almonds, Raspberry jam and a crumbly pastry makes up a classic bakewell tart.
It’s not all bad it’s just not all that great.
L:Well how about some scores huh? The bakewell tart was named after a clan based down south, and was adapted from a pudding recipe.

Brioche.

L: The first lot of brioche was very early on this afternoon. This one looks a little more golden.
R: That would be the wonderful egg wash. It crisps up the crust and makes it sweeter. This bread has also been glazed in honey, making it shinier and sweeter.
N: It’s also both dense and fluffy. That’s because it has been thoroughly kneaded before being baked. It’s common to over knead bread, causing it to be too thick to cook in the middle, but this one hasn’t.
A: The honey glaze may make it sweeter, but the brioche is already very sweet and sugary. The honey glaze is very sugary.

Tart Lemon Bars.

L: That’s a very bright yellow.
N: It’s almost radioactive or toxic yellow. It’s a little off putting.
A: But they taste really nice. Lemon dishes are usually very sugary, to counteract the sour taste of the lemon. But this one isn’t. The lemons used were naturally sweet themselves, which negates the need for sugar.
R: It’s a little bland without the sour taste. That’s the essence of a lemon bar like this. But it’s tasty nonetheless.

L: Sponge cakes are so light and fluffy.
R: Without an icing or cream, or even any sugar dusting, it’s very plain and uninteresting.
N: It’s very nice for a sponge cake, but it could’ve had some cream or strawberries to make things interesting.
A: I agree.
L:Well how about some scores huh? The Wispwillow Grove is usually a pretty chill place to be, but occasionally you can run into some trouble. L: A very interesting traditional dish, this one. Traditional style, but I think it might actually be unique.
A: They are incredibly cute. These little biscuits are surprisingly accurate depictions of noggles. They’ve been decorated as well.
R: They taste pretty good as well. The use of aether cherries is an interesting choice. They actually are used more commonly for dyes than food, given they’re extremely tart flavour, but the sweetness of the blooming pods helps.
N: They’re certainly unique little creations. They look shockingly accurate, and they do taste intense. The frosted violets are a nice touch as well.

N: Additionally, the lack of butter in the pastry means it hasn’t gained the flaky texture so key to a croissant.

Japanese Milk Bread.

L: A very soft and long lasting kind of bread.
A: It’s very very sweet by nature, this one in particular.
R: They’ve put way too much sugar into the bread. It’s not only affected the taste, making it even too sweet for me, it’s affected the constitution of the bread, so much so that it’s actually killed the yeast.
N: And that has resulted in this dense and overly thick mess. It’s crusted a little on the outsides, but the middle is not cooked thoroughly.

R: Despite how perfect it looks, it’s fairly plain. Bagels are designed to be served with filling or toppings, but these have been served plain. They taste great for a bagel, but it’s still just a bagel.
A: Without any fillings, the bagel isn’t a very healthy meal. It’s low on fibre which makes the digestion of the carbohydrates difficult.

Chaucer the Saucer

Though Quill and pen had been his image
Now oven and pan enter the scrimmage
Arietno has traveled wide and far
To be known as a cooking star

He walked through the thickest jungles
Through bushes and mushroom he tumbled
He flew over watery heights
To reach vast fields of pyrite

Ah! - A giant fish jumped to grab a hold!
But Arietno dodged, as if foretold
Stumbling on, avoiding the crash
Flittering over water until land turns into ash

The air blackens and blackens with dust
It is here that he must bake the pie's crust
It is here the festival is held
Here, a contest unparalleled

Volcanoes spew fire
Though the land looks dire
It is a thriving land, just!
Dragons do re-adjust.

Look at the buildings of stone
Look at the glass hand-blown
Closer and closer he flies
To where the contestant hall lies

Broad entry, broad arches -
Dragon after dragon in marches
Arietno enter thus, mittens in hand
Proclaiming: "To my station, I demand -

Ham and fishes,
Glistening dishes.
Honey and flour
Sauce sweet and sour

Shrimp and wine,
Rice and brine -
Soy sauce and pickles.
Be fast, I'm fickle."

Having entered thus,
He set up shop without a fuss
Chatted with companions here and there:
Contestants beware.

"But...But...what if they never talk now?" "...I believe that there's one particular reason Niah took an interest in cooking. She just hasn't realised it yet. What about Fionne? You know her better than I, do you think she'll stay gone?" Inima sniffed. "No...I...I trust her to come back." Ruha raised one claw. "You see? There're things about Fionne which Niah has yet to learn...which Fionne has yet to teach her." "It's not over?" "No." The two dragons embraced. Being 'lost' didn't always mean the same thing. For one thing, Fionne was aware of it, and fully-intended to return before she forgot the way back. She knew exactly where her family was and where they would be. On her own, the Tundra found herself with mainly her own thoughts to focus on. She had to admit, perhaps there was yet another meaning of 'lost' that was true that day. Some of the Light dragons Fionne's family had come to live with believed that many things had answers that could be found with time, in thought or debate. The problem felt more like artist's block though. So long as things didn't stay still and the same, maybe she could find something. The Tundra wandered the festival. Most stalls had closed up for the night as vendors went to sleep, but here and there were signs of business continuing through the night. At the other side of a tent, she heard voices. She didn't pay attention until she recognised one as Fayje. "What's a festival without fireworks? I can't decide whether I want to stock up for the year or just have one big show when we get home!" "Well now, perhaps an appreciator such as yourself can offer us for a suggestion for our little pre-show. The main display itself's been planned for months but our little sideshow has the flexibility to improvise some, you get me?" "OhhhhhhhhhhhhhhOH!" "Not so loud, it's a surprise bonus show." "ohhhhhhhhh..." The voices were too quiet to make out for a little, but the eavesdropping Tundra caught something about "souvenirs to take home". Fionne tip-toed away. It sounded like he'd found something important to do, but it got her thinking. Folks could come from all over for a big fireworks display. For many, festivals themselves were an opportunity to catch up with friends and relatives. The Tundra felt certain she was close to finding her answer. Fliers for an event fluttered into her in the breeze. The Tundra picked one up for a closer look, and smiled. "Maybe there is a way..." Seeing she was getting no nearer sleep, she got up to occupy herself with something. The Tundra headed for the kitchen, seemingly by default. After pausing uncertainly, she decided a small bit of baking would do. Nothing complicated. Niah didn't intend to ornament the quick bit of midnight baking, she could feel the yawns catching up, and simply left the little treats on the table, under glass to deter pests. The pleasant smell of baking was soothing, and she contentedly wandered back to her room. Inima gushed, while Salpicar gently cautioned against too many late-night projects. Everyone present was prepared to leave when Niah noticed a single cupcake left on the table. "Take it with you to keep you going!" Inima suggested. So the Tundra picked up the cupcake and started down the tunnels, but paused to look in the direction of her sister's room. A lesson rose from her memory. It involved talking about the meaning of actions, big and small. Niah didn't think about it for long, and left the cupcake in her sister's room before hurrying to the contest grounds. Once the judging was over, Inima ran up to Niah. "Hey! Wanna hug?" The Tundra opened her wings slightly, accepting the offer, and the Coatl enveloped her in a feathery embrace. "I think the things you've been making are really neat. I know these last two days have been rough but, don't give up." Niah almost smiled. "You don't need to worry about that. I started this, and I fully intend to finish. Wooden spoon or not." "I'm glad." Inima sniffed a little. "I wanted to say...let us know if you need anything, okay?" "Heh, I'm honestly looking forward to a cold soak when we're back." Inima thought. "I think I saw a goaler selling iced drinks the other day. Let's go find her!" Fionne's Festival Poem wrote:
Festivals are always
full of fun
sights to see
treats to try
travellers who talk.

This time will be special.
I have decided.
These joys shall be
shared.

Nem and Comu,
Mum and dad,
one and all
accept I'm back.
I'm here now.

Soon
sister will see me,
she has to

The festival song
shall not
cannot
end,
on such
bitter terms

Soon
she'll see
her surprise

perhaps I shall learn
something myself.

We'll watch
the festival's
fireworks finale
together once again.
