(No need to ping, I'm subbed!)
Look... those of us who level fodder know the appeal of seeing a pretty dragon and then going "uh oh, I like them" and deciding to keep them instead. Trust me, I have a load of them. Like, actually too many, haha. It's a common issue and completely understandable, though easier to manage now that the Hibernal Den is in place.
But this thread is NOT about the conventionally pretty ones.
When I say I want to see fodder failures, I mean fodder failures, baby! Dragons with gene and/or color and/or breed combos that you don't think you'd have ever bred for otherwise. Dragons that were so fascinating in their strangeness that you decided to put them in a jar and study them, rotating them in your head like rotisserie. Dragons who you'd bet only their deity could love if it weren't for you, the lord of your lair, eyeing them with (perhaps frustrated?) appreciation.
For this origin post to kick things off, I'm going to choose three and go from least to most egregious in my lair:
On paper, Envy's colors work. Black / Plum / Fuchsia? If I hatched a G1 with those, I could probably come up with a ton of viable gene combos to make them pop. However, I doubt I would have come up with Clown / Shimmer / Okapi. It just feels so... random. And yet I found they worked surprisingly well with her, to the point where I couldn't stop thinking of her, even though I'm not the biggest fan of Guardians.
Part of it was that she came with her name, and it gave me this instant impression of someone who wants to wow. Someone who wants to be envied, to leave an impression, to find adoration. Perhaps her wild genes were part of that? Perhaps she was insecure?
I couldn't help myself and caved. Hopefully she's much happier now.
Peregrine is also in the boat where his colors all work on paper. I originally adopted him not as instant fodder, but as fodder after I bred him for a challenge, which is my modus operandi for breeding quests. His genes (Cherub / Peregrine / Circuit) make such a busy combination that I would have never sought them out together. Circuit in particular I usually only ever like on comparatively "plain" primaries and secondaries, like Iridescent and Shimmer.
But something about him just... works for me?? I think it's the business of his genes and the bright, beautiful cyan eyes that clash and make him stand out. Much to my dismay, he also gave me an instant sense of personality. Wild and bold and hectic and eclectic.
But Dreamnorn, I hear. These guys aren't so bad! I thought you said this thread was for the obvious fodder failures!
Well...
I can explain.
Uhh... you see....
...
Okay, no, I really can't. I don't know if I have a good excuse for this one. Marten looks like a toddler ate a crayon for each of the three primary colors, barfed them on a Bogsneak, and proceeded to try and paint him using nothing but their hands and childlike whimsy. He's obnoxious to look at and yet I love him in a way that no prototypical eye-burners could ever achieve. Part of it, to my horror, is because he's so obnoxious to look at.
Perhaps helping his case is the fact that he came with his name, and I was drawn to how it looked (to me) like it was misspelled. Marten. No offense to any lovely folks out there with that name spelled as-is, but I'd only ever seen it spelled with an "i." It gave me the instant impression of someone who was perhaps a bit childish himself, and that's when I knew I was doomed to keep him.
Those are a handful of my crazy examples! I can't wait to see yours!!
