Mettle isn't scared of anything except other dragons.

It makes sense, she'll argue, if anyone questions her: she can shapeshift herself out of pretty much any phyiscal danger that might threaten her, but it's other dragons' approval that decides whether she lives or dies.

Of course, she didn't know that at the beginning. She didn't know anything except that she was new, and flighty, and she'd left Marrow behind at the first loud noise that startled them both out of their hiding places. She took to the skies, dipping between clouds and changing her scales to match the birds that passed her by. It was cold, that high up, and she'd already been looking for a place to land when a star fell out of the sky and smashed into the half-crumbled walls of a ruin.

Mettle alighted clumsily on the highest bit of wall and craned her bird-Nocturne-something neck to see better into the wreckage. Something was moving in there - something that looked like her. She barely noticed her own wings changing, spreading out mothlike against the darkening sky. She pawed at the rubble with her front legs, steadying herself on more back legs than she had a moment ago, peering into the darkness with shifting-bigger eyes. What was in there?

A dragon! She squeaked and darted away, ducking into a gap in a smaller pile of rubble.

“... Who are you?” a small voice asked, and Mettle didn’t know what to tell him.

Mettle and Marrow were created with good intentions, but they’re having trouble keeping up with the demands of the magic that sustains them. To put it simply: they need love from other dragons to survive, but neither of them are... social butterflies, exactly.

Their children want to help! Mettle and Marrow’s direct descendants are afflicted with the same dilemma, to varying degrees, but they also have a range of personalities. And even if only some of them get out there in the world and tell the story of their lineage, that’s still more than the family was working with before.
