Biography

WHYFOR
"a memory not yet of a word | certainly not the answer - only how it feels"
Dreams, Mary Oliver

Whyfor has never really felt adequately prepared for... anything. Life? The world?

He was only a hatchling when the Astrolab crashed, and there might've been scores of other dragons going through the same disorientation as he had been, but he hadn’t known any of them. He had questions, and it felt like he was never going to find someone with enough answers to make him feel safe.

&

He adored Mettle from their first conversation, because she never responded to his questions with "I don't know" or "why does it matter?" She'd say, "let's go find out," and then they'd go together.

To his very first question to her, she’d answered: “... I don’t think I’m like you.”

“That’s fine,” he grumbled, back then. “I wouldn’t want to be me right now. I think my tail’s stuck under something.” In fact, all of him was stuck under something, and that something was the rubble of some ruin that didn’t look terribly stable, and he was getting pretty worried about the whole situation.

He heard a contemplative hum. He didn’t know what made her decide - (later, she’d swear that it was the pitiful way he sneezed from all the dust while he was waiting) - but a few moments later he saw golden paws wiggle their way through the gaps and push away the rubble. Daylight! And a very pretty dragon.

&

The one hundred-and-fiftieth question he asked her, a few days later, was why she kept changing colour. He’d noticed it the first night, when they slept curled up together against the cold, and he woke up first. She’d had nine legs, then, in the moments before she stirred, and the patterns on her scales shifted like ripples across the water. Her eyes never looked the same from day to day, and he was almost certain that it wasn't just the lighting.

He finally asked because he’s noticed it on him, too - anywhere they’ve been touching too long, his own body took on patterns like hers. His didn’t move, though; it reminded him of stamps and stencils, like she’s so full of vivid light that it literally rubbed off on him.

He didn’t mind, but he did want to know why, and she tilted her head in the way she did when she’s seriously thinking about the answer.

“... I don’t know, but there was another just like me, at first. Let’s go find him and ask.”

rva7IHk.png Mettle and Marrow were created with good intentions, but they’re having trouble keeping up with the demands of the magic that sustains them. To put it simply: they need love from other dragons to survive, but neither of them are... social butterflies, exactly.

Their children want to help! Mettle and Marrow’s direct descendants are afflicted with the same dilemma, to varying degrees, but they also have a range of personalities. And even if only some of them get out there in the world and tell the story of their lineage, that’s still more than the family was working with before.

Consider welcoming a Restless Replica into your lair, and help clean up this mess that a hapless Spiral alchemist created.
