As any firstborn son should, Aver sets a very bad example for his younger siblings. He was born healthy enough, yes, but it becomes clear very quickly that he isn’t as strong, just isn’t growing as quickly or bouncing back from injuries like his agemate peers. He doesn’t even match the pace of the other hatchlings in those first two clutches of Replicas - his siblings all leave for new homes and new connections, and Aver lingers by his parents, clinging to their obligate attention just to stay alive. The other firstborn keeps track of everyone’s progress, as their family grows, and Aver remains a concerning outlier. In the end, it takes almost too much work to figure it out - it takes almost too long - but the conclusion comes through from Carabas, and it is that Aver loves too much. He loves too easily, and loves too hard. Proportionally, his loved ones simply can’t keep up. His magic doesn’t quite interpret indifference as rejection, but it’s a close thing, and there’s just too much sheer devotion coming out of Aver to balance what’s coming in. It’s Descant who finds him work with the caravan. All the time he spends learning other dragons’ histories and little loves and hatreds becomes useful, here, and there’s a constantly-rotating lineup of hatchlings to care for. Children love easily, too, especially the first dragon aside from their parents and siblings to pay them any attention and treat them seriously. Aver learns their stories, and in exchange he earns a little reserved spot in their hearts, carried with them to wherever they end up.  The scent of woodsmoke from a campfire drifts through the crisp night air. A caravan has set up for the night, just off the road, and the process of getting excitable young dragons to bed raises a warm, bustling commotion.   |
