Marrow, unlucky first-born, first-made, inherited all of his creator’s fear and little else.

At least, that’s what he’d tell you if you asked. And then, if his mate was in earshot, she’d come over and scold him for being hard on himself again, and he’d look at her with a helpless smile like maybe half of the reason he’d said it was so that she’d come defend him against himself.

She had been there when the Aethers came looking for him.

The place he found himself after he and Mettle got separated was not a happy one. None of the surrounding ruins were safe for a distressed hatchling, dragonmade or natural-born, and when he burrowed his way into a loose patch of earth to hide from the light he genuinely didn’t know whether he’d be able to get back out.

He stayed there for a long time. Longer than a real dragon could without needing food or water, which was his first hint that there was something different about him. (Something wrong with him, would be how he’d put it, and then he’d be scolded by all the people who loved him, and he’d have to take a moment again to think of all the coincidences that led him here. Loved - maybe he’s lucky after all.)

He may not need to eat, but that didn’t mean he didn’t need sustenance. He curled up tighter in his hiding place, and day by day felt weaker - his form grew less stable, so that sometimes his claws turned unwieldy and uncomfortable to sit on, and sometimes his horns spiraled wild and unsymmetrical into the earth above his head until he worried about cave-ins.

He was a mess by the time help arrived.

Mettle and Marrow were created with good intentions, but they’re having trouble keeping up with the demands of the magic that sustains them. To put it simply: they need love from other dragons to survive, but neither of them are... social butterflies, exactly.

Their children want to help! Mettle and Marrow’s direct descendants are afflicted with the same dilemma, to varying degrees, but they also have a range of personalities. And even if only some of them get out there in the world and tell the story of their lineage, that’s still more than the family was working with before.
