Biography
On the far eastern edge of the beach, between the travelers' den and the path leading toward Redrock Cove, a large wooden stand draws the eye. A rusty old anchor is leaning up against the base of the stand, with the tattered end of a rope still tethered to it. Next to the anchor is a barnacle-encrusted chest clearly dredged from the depths of the Sea - it's probably empty, now, but the sight makes your heart jump in excitement. The wood sign atop the stand reads "Coliseum Challenge" in dark blue paint, and a large Obelisk waves from his seat behind the counter.
"Welcome to the Scavenger Hunt - er, I mean, Coliseum Challenge!" Cobalt announces jovially, motioning you towards the stand. You approach, eager to take a closer look. Scattered across the counter you see a handful of old doubloons, a glittering amethyst geode, and a jar of pearls. These artifacts must all have been discovered in the area of Sunbeam Grotto; surely there are more treasures to be found in the depths of the caves and at the bottom of the sea! The sights on and around the stand spark within you a desire to explore the unknown...
Next to Cobalt's paws is a tall stack of unusual looking paper with the word "SCORECARD" clearly legible across the top. The paper on which the scorecard is written is thick and green; not at all like the type that you're used to seeing in books or letters. You blink, wondering what makes it so...unique looking.
"It's made from kelp," Cobalt says when he notices you staring at it. "Waterproof - you never know, you know? Go ahead 'n take one - I made plenty to go around!"
The kelp paper feels heavy in your hands, and the ink is a little hard to read - though you're not sure if that's due to the porosity of the leaves or the poor penmanship of the writer. Still, it's clear that a splash of water will roll right off the waxy leaf, while the ink remains intact!
"There's no perfect solution to waterproofing," Cobalt shrugs. "You can coat regular parchment with wax, but there's no way to write on it afterward without eroding the coating. Aside from carrying around stone tablets, this is the best way to carry notes through the water! Somethin' Laguna 'n Sandbar cooked up in their line of work, but it works for me, too!"
"Anyway," he says after a brief pause, "you thinkin' about joining in on the challenge?"

Complete a full scorecard to earn points! Turn in as many completed scorecards as you can before the competition closes at rollover on 10/21! *for bonus points, see Hard Mode at the bottom of your scorecard!*
Any extra challenges fulfilled can carry over to a new scorecard (for example, if you collect a rare insect item twice when working on the first scorecard, you can check it off your second scorecard once the first is complete). It's ok to keep multiple scorecards going at once to stack up repeat points, just make sure to actually finish the cards!
You may either post your completed scorecards in the family reunion thread or keep them in a dragon's bio - just make sure you can link to them once the last call goes out on 10/22! You may submit as many scorecards as you have completed + 1 in-progress scorecard for the final tally.

Cobalt | he/him | cave diving treasure hunter | adult
Cobalt is a spirited treasure hunter, brought to Sunbeam Grotto after hearing of a "secret, shimmering gem" hidden on the coast of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. Turns out, whoever spread the rumor was talking about the beautiful, secluded clan of Sunbeam Grotto - where Cobalt found his own legacy deeply tied to the clan! He's since carved out a home for himself and his mate within the territory, but takes frequent trips following other (better sourced) rumors across the globe.
While typically confident, Cobalt found himself a little apprehensive about the first family reunion. It had been quite some time since he'd seen many of his family members outside Sunbeam Grotto - and he was, to put it lightly, a different dragon then. He worried whether he'd be recognized by his parents and siblings, but hoped to have the chance to show off some of the rare artifacts he's collected from all corners of Sornieth!
After a correspondence from a distant cousin, Cobalt began to hatch the idea of a scavenger hunt. Hosting such an event would bring more excitement to the clan's visitors, and maybe he could take the opportunity to unload some of the treasures that were overflowing his den!
The first year's scavenger hunt went off without a hitch - and so too did reacquainting himself with his relatives. Turns out, his sister recognized him easily, and any awkwardness dissipated straight away once they got to talking! A surge of energy carried Cobalt through the rest of the week, as he balanced answering questions about the scavenger hunt with attending as many of the events as he could. When it was all over, Cobalt threw himself into planning for the next year!
Near the travelers' den, a large wooden stand is set up with a commanding presence that draws the eye. An old rusted anchor is leaning up against the base of the stand, with a rotted rope still tethered to it. Next to the anchor is a stunning amethyst geode so large a hatchling could hide inside it. The wood sign atop the stand reads "Scavenger Hunt Info" in dark blue paint, and a large Obelisk waves from his seat behind the counter.
"Welcome, welcome! Interested in the Scavenger Hunt?" Cobalt says jovially, motioning you towards the stand. You approach, eager to take a closer look. These artifacts must all have been discovered in the area of Sunbeam Grotto; surely there are more treasures to be found in the depths of the caves and at the bottom of the sea! The sights on and around the stand spark within you a desire to explore the unknown...
A frame is stood up on the wide counter, holding a silver sea-tarnished necklace embedded with a heart-shaped sapphire, and a worn inscription beneath. Next to the frame is a stack of...something with the word "SCORECARD" clearly legible across the top. The paper on which the scorecard is written is thick and green; not at all like the type that you're used to seeing in books or letters. You blink, wondering what makes it so...unique looking.

The usual confident smile on Cobalt's face is nothing compared to the ear-to-ear smile that appears when he recognizes Ashma approaching. He steps out from behind the stand to envelop her in a hug - a far cry from their hesitant greeting the year before.
"Welcome, welcome!" he says over her wing to Reverie and Hydrangea. After they separate from the hug - which is much more difficult, considering the angle of Ashma's spikes and the tangled mess of Cobalt's mane - Cobalt takes a closer look at the visitor he hasn't yet met.
"Verdigris' sister I know -" he snaps his fingers as he remembers - "Reverie! And who might you be?" he says to Hydrangea.

At this, two little manes peek out from where they've been hiding behind the scavenger hunt stand. "Whatcha talkin' about, dad?" one of the hatchlings peeps.
"Oh, nothing," Cobalt says over his shoulder. "Kids, am I right?"

"Your dad is awesome, by the way. Don't forget that."
Ashma and Hydrangea continued speaking with Cobalt, joking and laughing like they were children again.

"Ah!" Cordelia stumbled, the long end of the scarf catching on something.
"Eep!"
She looked down to see an Obelisk pup in a heap on the gold silk.
"Oh dear! Here, let's get you up. Did I trip you with this scarf? It's quite long..."
"Uh. No. Kinda. The light shined patterns on it and I wanted to catch them..."
"Ah! Quite the huntress we have here then, hm?" Macchiato said, coming over to see what had held Cordelia up.
The little Obelisk puffed her chest out with pride.
"My dad is the best kind of hunter. A treasure hunter!"
"Ohhh. Hang on then, is your dad, um-"
"Cobalt?" Cordelia supplied.
"Yep!"
"Well, you must be one of his most prized treasures! I'm sure he wouldn't want to lose you!"
Cordelia smiled. Macchiato was always so good with children.
They headed to the Scavenger Hunt information stand with their little companion. Her name was Xenia, a d she was very curious.
"Where are you from?"
"The Everbloom Gardens. "
"Where's that?"
"The Viridian Labyrinth, which is-"
"What's it like?"
"Well. It's full of life. Vibrant and colourful. Very many natural treasures to be found, " Cordelia winked.
Xenia heaved a sigh too weary for her young age. "I wanna see it."
"I'm sure you will. Especially if you have family there."
Cordelia stopped off to get them all snacks from the food stalls, and to perhaps spend a little more time with Xenia. She felt a connection to her that she couldn't quite explain. A kinship stronger than that she had felt with any other member of her family.
"It was lovely to meet you, Miss Xenia." Macchiato bowed when she was returned to her father's side.
"And we'll see each other plenty over the next few days, I'm sure," Cordelia added, ruffling Xenia's mane.
"Yeah..." the small dragon sulked, no doubt feeling betrayed for having her adventure cut short.

"Xenia! There you are!" Cobalt scoops the hatchling up in one arm, and she bites down on his paw. He doesn't react, just shakes it slightly to see if she'll let go, but she just ends up hanging there stubbornly.
"Sorry, all - I told my mate I'd look after the little ones today, since they don't much like to swim with the other hatchlings. Too much splashing, they say. She must've ran off while I was talking to some challengers. Do me a favor and don't mention this to Giuoco, 'kay? There's no real trouble a child could get into around these parts, but doesn't stop her from worryin'."
"Mmpf mmm!" Xenia retorts, her teeth still clamped firmly on Cobalt's paw.

Hey Dad,
We really didn't plan not to come back home, but it looks like we'll be staying in the Meristema Clan with Xenia for good. Xebec really likes it here, and has already found a girl he's smitten with, but anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself.
We were travelling when the stars fell. I imagine you know all about aethers now and probably have some living there with you too. The magic during the star shower changed Bec and I. We became aethers, overnight!
Nothing to be worried about. I love this body. I really feel like me in a way I didn't before, y'know?
We would've written sooner. I know Bec tried, multiple times, but he kept eating the half-written letters as he was thinking what to write next. I didn't realise he'd never actually sent one until now.
Lots of dragons here underwent the same changes we did, and there's a Life As An Aether programme, run by the two natural-born aethers that landed here. It's been super helpful.
I met Prosper there, he was born an aether during the star fall even though his parents are a fae and a skydancer. He's a sweet guy. We had a nest together. I'm not sure about us being a permanent thing, or whatever but... he's been nice.
And I'm writing now to say my twins hatched today, and if you wanted either of them to come and stay with you, just let me know.
I gave the nest to Bec, and obviously he and Aurna are are made for each other as she's laid 5 eggs. I'm sure you'll here all about it when they hatch, right now he's too busy making doe eyes at her and fussing endlessly.
Oh and I'm an uncle now too. I know Xenia has had kids before but one stayed with her and he's an aether too! There must be something on our blood that was susceptible to that arcane magic because this is crazy. He's a cute kid, and pretty attached to Bec and I. His name is Frolic and he's also on a nest right now, just one egg, but I think he's relived about that for his first.
Anyway, I hope you're well and everyone back home is okay. I'm sure we'll all meet up at the reunion.
Best wishes,
Xylan

Hi Dad!
Sorry I didn't write sooner, I'm glad Xy explained everything to you. I don't know why but I really suffer from the paper craving - he doesn't seem to have that problem!
He's told you about my mate, Aruna, right? She's been helping me adapt to my new body. She's so smart, and she brought it to my attention that having extra arms can really be utilised! I've been exploring arts and crafts and still figuring out what's best for me (the urge to eat paper can be a problem in most of these pursuits...)
Most recently, I've been painting on fabric which has been a lot of fun! I think I'm going to do a sort of tapestry of the journey Xy and I took from home.
But the important news is that I'm now a father! Five excitable children hatched today. I'd be happy to send any back home to you if you wanted to care for them.
But I'll keep this brief - I'm sure you can imagine how busy things are now in my den!
All my love,
Xebec

Technically, it's a letter, but what Alfonzo hands over to Xylan and Xebec looks more like a stack of thick, rubbery leaves, dark ink standing out against bright green.
"Paper made from kelp," he supplies helpfully at their twin inquisitive glances. "Used most commonly to ensure waterproofing, and less commonly to ensure..." he trails off, but by now they get the point. Thankful he doesn't have to hold the letter out of the way of his brother, Xylan begins to read.
Xylan, Xebec - and Xenia, if you're reading this!
I'm sorry I couldn't deliver this message myself, but your mother and I are heading out for an expedition tomorrow to discover some yet-unseen fossils from the depths of the Sea. That's the plan, anyway - as you kids know by now, plans don't always work out the way we expect 'em to! Best we can do is prepare for as many unexpected outcomes as we can. I don't mean to make you worry - we'll have a few seasoned Water mages and Maren guides watching our tails, and a deep-dive dig really isn't too far out of our wheelhouse. Maybe once we're back I'll have some treasures to send your way!
Now who's getting ahead of himself? I should be congratulating Xylan and Xebec on your new forms! I know exactly what you mean, Xy, about feeling more "you" than you were before - I know you three've sat around for my story of becoming an Obelisk plenty of times, so I won't repeat myself again now. There'll be lots of things you've got no choice but to adjust to, but before long it'll become as natural as could be. I remember struggling to write after my transformation - I had to relearn how to hold a pen with these big mitts, but look how tidy I can write now!
Though it may be tempting at times, don't forget where you came from. Your past is just as much a part of you as your present. I think the tapestry is a fantastic idea, Bec - I've seen more than a few renditions other Obelisks created of the Dustcarve Dig, and it sparks emotions in me like nothing else. Having a tangible reminder of your own story is gonna be something truly special. Who knows, maybe it'll become an heirloom one day, to help your own kids and grandkids remember their roots!
Speaking of grandkids...that's a lot of grandkids! I gotta say, I knew it was coming, but I was still surprised to hear the three of you are all parents now! You know how things go in the Grotto - if any of 'em need a place to stay, or just plain wanna visit to check the place out - send 'em on their way! That applies to the rest of you, too...of course this year's family reunion is still on, but if anyone has an itch to visit before then, don't let anything get in your way! You always have a home here.
Giuoco sends her love, of course. She's out at the Wharf getting some last-minute supplies before the big dive tomorrow. It's prob'ly a good thing your letters arrived when they did - she'd stay up all night writing, never mind resting up for the trip! I'll read your letters again and again before I go meet her in the morning, so I can tell her all your news on the way.
You all take care - and keep in touch!
Much love,
Cobalt
As he carried yet another load of blasting powder down the winding cavern, a great *BOOM* shook the earth. Half of his team shrieked, anticipating a cave-in, and rushed to the surface, while the other half abandoned their charges and flew down the tunnel. Cobalt followed the latter half, of course!
What happened next, Cobalt doesn't remember - the following part of his tale has been pieced together from the eyewitness accounts of his fellow Dustcarve diggers. By the time a crew had been assembled surface-side to go down and investigate the extent of the damage done by the cave-in, they found the abandoned stone city standing eerily still, free of the anticipated tons of debris. What they did find, however, were a staggering number of stone stalagmites that had not been there before. One of the crew members moved to strike one with a pickaxe, but his teammates stopped him - there was a piece of cloth sticking out of a crack in the stone, just enough to be recognizable as a digger's uniform. Somehow, some sort of shockwave had radiated from the cave's depths with the power to turn dragons to stone. The survey team swallowed their fear, draped the stalagmites in heavy cloth, posted signs reading "DO NOT TOUCH" on each one, and resumed their digging efforts.
Nearly every dragon in Sornieth knows what happened next - just below the stone city, an underground river was discovered, and the temporary resting place of Obelisks uncovered. What much of the population may not know is that when the Obelisks awoke, so too did the stone-turned diggers - with a single, notable difference to tie them together. Cobalt and the other dragons caught in the shockwave had changed forms to match the Earthshaker's carvings, altering the course of their destinies.
