Biography

Sunbeam Rotala Shining Feather Cluster Sociable Striped Locket Sacridite Lustrous Shell Woven Cloth
Delphina | she/her | hatchling caretaker | elder

Delphina is the eldest daughter of Sunset and Mudpuppy. She is always among the first to greet the new hatchlings of Sunbeam Grotto, and will volunteer to play with them so the new parents can rest. Delphina takes an active role in helping both her parents with their teaching jobs, and also works to assist Waw in looking after the clan's littlest members. It's clear she loves to care for and nurture hatchlings!

Despite her youthful demeanor, Delphina is among the wisest and worldliest of all Sunbeam Grotto's elders. She was the first of Sunset and Mudpuppy's children to be sent away from home as a young adult, a tradition which has now been enforced on hundreds of dragons. In her time away from home, Delphina had the fortune to experience many of Sornieth's greatest turning points - Terraclae Quarry's depletion, Luminax's first rampage, and the hurricane that shook the Sea of a Thousand Currents beyond repair. The land's history is her story as well, though you might never guess it just by looking at her.

Delphina was elated to meet relatives from all over her family tree! When Sunset announced her wish for a family reunion, Delphina was overjoyed - she pulled out a lengthy scroll of names and clans and began writing invitations straight away! Since then, she's taken the reins of the event planning, arranging for food, music, and more activities to be purported by her family members and clanmates. Though there were plenty of dragons who eagerly helped participate in event preparations, it's thanks to Delphina that the reunion took place at all!

While she played a hand in raising many of the Sunset descendants born in Sunbeam Grotto who were returning to the clan as adults for the first time, Delphina was equally overjoyed to meet dragons she's never even seen before, and to finally put a face to each name!

At the reunion, Delphina worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure everything from the first round of appetizers to the final lantern release occurred on schedule and without a hitch! She had less time than she might've liked to actually socialize, but thankfully plenty of her descendants and relatives eagerly promised to keep in touch! The day after the reunion ended, Delphina slept throughout the morning and most of the afternoon...once she finally woke up, she began sketching out some plans for the next family get-together!

As the second annual family reunion approached, Delphina realized she was in no shape to handle an event bound to be even bigger than the previous year's - at least, not all on her own. It was fairly simple to recruit Phoebe for the job - Delphina had grown quite close to her niece, and if Phoebe's organizational skills were ever to be of the caliber Delphina boasted, she had better start learning soon. The young dragon took to the role with pride, and her eagerness to help her family and her clan began to outweigh her nervousness at meeting so many new dragons all at once!

Delphina wasn't always the dutiful, matronly dragon she is today. In her youth, she caused plenty of trouble for the clan with innocent pranks that spiraled out of control. Her parents and elders were frustrated with her bad attitude, and how she seemed to refuse to grow up...and one day, after a particularly clever practical joke ended with the clan healer soaked in spoiled clam juice, Delphina was cast out unceremoniously, told to "grow up already!" She flew along the shore until her birthplace was out of sight, then tumbled to the sand and thrashed around in a tantrum unbefitting of her age. There she lay, sandy limbs sprawled out and chest heaving with ragged breaths as she steeped in her frustration.

It took many days and many nights, spent traveling or scrounging for shelter and food, or both; before Delphina allowed herself to reflect on her behavior. Her rebellion, for lack of a better word, wasn't a catharsis of awful parents, or a sign of some deep-seated complex. It seemed, Delphina thought as she watched a clutch of tiny dragon siblings play in the currents of the clan she was visiting, that she simply wasn't ready to grow up.

Looking back, it seemed Delphina was long since set on track to mature early. Among the other young dragons her age, even her siblings, she stuck out - always stumbling over too-long legs and slouching to hide her immense posture. Yet, she wasn't interested in pursuing combat training like her brothers, nor the path of the Sight, like her sister, nor swimming, or flying, or any of the other skills taught to hatchlings, at least not any more than was necessary. Delphina performed her chores begrudgingly, gathering food and supplies for her clan without much care or foresight. Her free time was spent, as her father would say, dillydallying...not doing anything in particular, because there wasn't anything in particular she liked doing.

What ended up making the difference for Delphina was the worldly experience she gained during her time outside Sunbeam Grotto. In the strangers she met and helped along the way, she saw bits and pieces of herself - which led to learning more about herself in turn. Delphina found work first as a laborer in a coastal fishing outpost, then as a miner in Terraclae, and even worked at the Trading Post near Lanternlea Port for a short stint, back before even Baldwin's time. It was while visiting her home clan, something she did quite often after maturing, that she was caught in the thrall of hibernation along with the rest of Sunbeam Grotto.

Delphina is proud to help her parents and family in their quest to track Sunset's lineage across Sornieth. Delphina has done her best to keep a list of all the relatives she's met or heard of who are a part of her family tree!
