Raymond's entire life is a story of pressure. From the time he hatched, greatness was expected of him: his ancestors included royalty, famous warriors, dreamweavers, living stars, vikings, sirens, and even dragons that managed to break the bonds of time and space. There were members of a line descended from legendary hideousness, and members of a line known for smashing back the Shade.
He can read fortunes in the stars, sing potential mates to him, repel the Shade, repel nightmares, slip past undetected despite his huge size, appear legally in noble Courts across the land, and peel back his sense of reality to see the ones and zeroes underneath... but none of it particularly well. He even, technically, has ownership and captaincy of a ship... although he doesn't actually know where it is. Raymond suffers from being spoiled for choice; when your blood contains so much, what do you pick to do well? With so much riding on him, so much passionately pulling at him, it makes sense that Raymond's nature would drift toward being shiftless and self-effacing. With all these voices screaming in his ears about what he should do, or think, or be, he has exactly zero sense of who he is, personally.
The only thing that makes unambiguous sense is breaking things. Sometimes those things are other dragons.
Several of his families clamor over even that, claiming that his propensity for hitting things comes from X or Y or Z warrior bloodline. Raymond's usual response to that is a blank stare and a big meaty smack. This has led to an incorrect assumption among his families that Raymond got shortchanged in the brain department. He's not stupid. Far from it. He's just been so overloaded for so long by so many people that he's lost all sense of personal curiosity inside and out. Raymond knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that nothing he says is going to matter one bit. To anyone. He's learned from personal experience that the only way to shut someone up is to hit them until they stop.
He'll be told, eventually, who his mate will be. He'll mate with her, not knowing, not caring, who or what she is. Raymond will do his duty, then go back to his life, offering only a blank and empty smile to the world.
Only on the days he forgets to wear his herbs can the skydancers feel how exhausted he is.
