A young adult pearlcatcher who eloped with a member of Sanctuary to escape from the grip of her blood-money home clan in the Tangled Wood.

Maali grew up in The Shadowbinder's domain, the hatchling of someone whose important status kept her from forming real connections with her peers. Most of the time outside of her education was filled with scheduled networking opportunities, or attending parties, or being anywhere else her family needed her to show her face and throw on a smile. She never enjoyed this life, and did her best to keep to herself. She was stagnant, hanging on to her life by a thread of hope that something would eventually change.

One day, on an outing to a merchant's convention the nearby trading post, she met Pardas, who was very loudly advertising her wares. She obviously wasn't from the Shadowbinder's Domain - Maali was horribly intrigued by her. They felt drawn to each other, and Pardas eventually convinced Maali to run away with her to Sanctuary, where she would finally be free. She was then able to pursue her previously secret hobby of collecting and keeping track of old tomes, scrolls, and the like. Maali then changed her name (to Maali) and became Sanctuary's librarian, with no intention of ever leaving.
