Personality:
Dulcet is a vain and pragmatic Hedonist who truly believes in pursuing pleasure to its fullest. His aspirations involve having wealth, power, and being infamous enough to be beloved (or despised) by everyone he meets.
While he has the ability to come across as affable, if not somewhat eccentric, Dulcet loves nothing more than to makes others feel uncomfortable or unbalanced around him. He has next to no shame and only observes social norms when they personally suit him. Cunning and manipulative, Dulcet knows how to use other people's emotions and reservations against them and has an uncanny intuition when it comes to getting other someone else's skin.
Despite his constant talk and vibrato, Dulcet is immensely insecure about his age, his appearance, and his mysterious and less than glamorous past. He is willing to do absolutely anything to keep himself and his secrets safe.
Background:
Born James River Tinker to wannabe Hippie parents, Dulcet's beginnings were shabby and unsupervised. After leaving his hometown as a traveling salesman, he was quickly swept up in the luxury of big city life and all it had to offer. He quickly became indebted to a powerful mage named Pallor, working for his ruthless employer for several years until he managed to escape the other man's clutches-- But not before Pallor successfully soul bound him to The Locket.
Pallor (mostly) behind him, Dulcet forged a new identity as a journalist and author, gathering a small following and a few fairly lucrative book deals. Certain bad investments in real estate, as well as Dulcet's love of luxury and excess, have made him determined to write new material that will give him financial security and help him maintain his lifestyle.
Other:
- While working for Pallor, Dulcet was soul bound to a cheap, old locket by the former as punishment for a botched job. Dulcet's consciousness (or "soul") exists within the locket but is able to operate his physical body as long as he is in contact with it. Because his body is, essentially a magical shell, it has a slight resistance to magic-- at least more resistance than the average, non-magical human.
- When The Locket is separated from Dulcet's body, it enters a self substantiating but fully catatonic state, which Dulcet's consciousness has no control over or sensory connection to.
- While fully "in" The Locket, Dulcet can experience auditory and tactile sensations (hearing, changes in temperature, changes in pressure, etc.) but can only speak or see when The Locket is open. To him, it is as though he is in a small, dark room and looking through a little window at the outside world.
- Has a large jagged abdominal scar from his Pallor Era
- While he is distrustful of mages and magic for obvious reasons, he views the plight of magical folk as an issue that is of no concern to him beyond how any of the involved factions can further his own agenda...
