Legends predating the modern world emerge: beneath the chasm lies an ancient city, carved lovingly out of stone by the Earthshaker himself. After the devastation of the Third Age, seismic plates shattered and folded the city beneath layers of stone - trapping Earthshaker's first children within. Its only survivors are long dead, only remembered through word of mouth and maps crumbling with age.
After Dustcarve Dig, more expeditions than ever have headed underground, lured by promises of glory and treasure! Not even the threat of undead can scare them off. The dragons are skeptical, but there's nothing else to do. They should be FIGHTING the creatures, a few argue, but soon fall silent. More wyrms have gathered silently outside the torchlight, slithering up the massive ruining buildings. They clamber over each other, bones clicking and scraping, staring down at the camp with undisguised hunger.
At the expedition leader's nod, the porters start singing their work-songs again in high quavery voices. The researchers, determinedly not looking at the undead, shakily resume their debates. A scholar has gathered some younger dragons - nearly hatchlings, not even fully grown - to their side, and started distracting them with tales of the first histories. Eventually, an old obelisk brings them a torch, and slowly - using props and their own talons - they begin to create shadow puppets on the wall.
More and more dragons begin to join in. Over hours, the terror in the camp begins to ease. An argument breaks out over how a sack tied into the shape of the Arcanist should be puppetered, and it ends with laughter and good-natured jeering. One of the gaolers goes around to each cart, bringing out more torches and oil to light them with, supplies that had been saved up over the journey and passing food out to each dragon in the camp. A chef that somehow ended up in the scouting party borrows an iron pot, and sets to work creating a thick stew that warms the air with its aroma. And - at some point, the work-song has swelled into a rousing chant, the lyrics and melody older than the stones themselves.
The young guardian points up, gasping. The wyrms have joined in the song.
