My eggs hatched today. Both of them hatched into two beautiful healthy girls, happy and digesting their eggs for their first pearls. Right now they're currently sleeping underneath my wings, though I'm sure that they'll wake up at some point to regurgitate their pearls. It's why I'm awake right now, even if the moon is high up in the skies. Morning Sun is also awake and watching over the campfire we have going. We're outside of the tunnels and on the canyon's floor, and I never thought I would be so happy for my eggs to hatch, even if it has brought our expedition to a grinding halt. It had only been at most an hour since we had left the tunnels when my eggs began to hatch. The twitching, the cracks of shells breaking, I had to stop then and there to check my satchel. I dropped it to the ground and unwrapped the eggs from their cloths, and watched as the slightly larger one pipped open a hole, electricity discharging from inside and into the ground in a jolt. The sudden flash of light took me by surprise. And then... then her snout peeked out! Two little nostrils and mouth open, small whiskers sensing the air around. Her claws then gripped at the edges and snapped the shell apart, revealing a wonderful blue Pearlcatcher with soft eyes, goop still coating her mane wet. It was when I fully saw her living and breathing, chest rising up and down as she laid there, that I knew her name would be Nadina. Nadina rolls off the tongue carefully, simply, but it is a name for a dragon who is kind and caring, who I know this hatchling will become. The second egg didn't take long to hatch either. She was a feisty one coming straight out, bursts of lightning striking out. One struck my horn and singed it! Even after that display, the girl had energy right afterwards to look at me and snap her jaws, angry straight into life. It makes me giggle, seeing her scales still drying and yet prepared to fight against her own mother. I took her eggshell and gave them to her, which she promptly consumed, gulping it down with a flame in her heart. For that, and her dark wings, I decided to call her Shadowflame. My heart swells with joy to look down at my two girls, and I feel a fierce need to protect them from anything and everything. Even if they have no father here, I will do my best to raise them both. Morning also is offering their paw to me, giving up their rations for the hatchlings. Nadina is gone. It was the worst way for her to go. I remember her desperate attempts to breathe, her gargled cries, how she heaved her chest and hacked and coughed. Her pearl got lodged in her throat as she was trying to regurgitate it, and it got worse as the event made her create more pearl fluids, which got into her lungs as she was trying to breathe in. I did all that I could, I used my own magic to try to save her, but I couldn't. Morning Sun and Aspen tried to help, and Aspen did manage to get Nadina to spit out the pearl, but the fluids were still stuck. My hands are trembling as I remember her final breaths as she laid in my arms, her closing her eyes for the last time in her short life. Nadina didn't deserve to go this way. I've spent so long caring for her egg, and now she's gone just like that. Aspen has buried Nadina underneath the spot where she hatched, but I've decided to keep her pearl with me as a way to keep her memory alive. I know, Pearlcatchers should be buried with their pearls so their spirits can find peace in the afterlife, but I want to take Nadina's pearl with me on this journey so she can see what her own mother is like. When we return I will bury the pearl alongside her, so she will have it back. Shadowflame will be too young to remember her sister, but Royal will remember Nadina. I feel bad for these two children to see death so early on in their lives, especially Shadowflame. I've asked Aspen if we can spend a day or two just resting where we are now, since I don't want anything to happen to Shadowflame while we're travelling. Ink is struggling with losing one of her children, and Morning is trying to console her and caring for her. Thankfully, her other hatchling is still fine and well, and is getting along great with Royal. Ink hasn't let her out of her sight though, and is often holding Shadowflame instead of letting her play. The mood is sombre though, and I still feel the heavy weight from yesterday. It feels wrong to think that a few days ago I was feeling an intense jealousy to Ink, and now she is in this state. I want to make it up to her, but I'm not sure how to. Morning has been doing well caring for her, and I know they're much closer to her than I am. They've been by her side ever since Nadina passed away. As those two have been busy, I've been taking Royal out on short scouting trips where we'll be heading. He's old enough to be of use to us on this journey, and has learnt how to use some of his illusion magic to change the colour of objects. He enjoys showing me tricks with his magic while we're out, and it does make me happy too to see his enthusiasm hasn't wavered despite what happened yesterday. Hopefully tomorrow Ink will be better enough to continue on the expedition. I woke up to Ink's screams just at the brink of dawn, crying out Shadowflame's name. She had gone missing in the night, with just her small pearl left behind where she once was underneath Ink's wing. Ink was frantic in asking all of us where she could have gone, and Aspen decided for us to split into pairs and look for Shadowflame. I went with Ink, since I think (or at least like to) that she is most comfortable with me. She was holding both of her children's pearls in her satchel, and seeing those with her own pearl brought in me a crushing sadness. Honestly, I thought that they were enchanted with some magic considering how much I felt from them. We spent all day looking for Shadowflame, but no luck. Ink was so focused on searching, she didn't take a break the entire time the sun was up. Even after it was getting dark she wanted to keep going, but I told her we needed to come back and that Shadowflame probably wasn't out here. When we reached back to the camp it turned out that Aspen and Royal also couldn't find Shadowflame. They both left to talk with one another, for whatever reason. After they left, Ink slumped down onto the ground. Her face was blank, devoid of any emotion. Scared. That's what I felt. All I did was sit next to her and lend her a paw. Ink took out all three pearls from her satchel and laid them out on the floor in front of her. Her glistening pearl towered over the daughters' pearls. The other two were the size of a chicken egg. Ink added one more layer to her own pearl, the thick black goop coating it, and laid it down to harden. She had tears running down her face, yet no noise came from her. She turned to me. "Take care of these for me. I won't be needing them anymore." Why? Why me? Even as she stood up and walked away from me, from her pearl, from her child's grave, I was frozen. The quietest *no* came from me, but she didn't hear me. I was tangled in a net of fear and sadness as she grew smaller and smaller in the distance, before she finally disappeared around a corner off to nowhere. Three pearls, all in my hands.
