Yeah, I am very excited!!! I'm just about to combine their tabs together!
Also, it made me so sad to write Toby's bit... He's just a little baby

"Ugh, I hate it down here," Leopold moaned, he was laying on his back in the dirt of the tunnels and feeling every speck of it dirtying his scales. "There's no sunlight, everything is cold and uncomfortable, I miss my favourite pillow, there's too many people around."
"At least your alive," Aes' voice broke through his complaints. Leopold didn't even bother lifting his head, he just stared at his father's feet as they moved closer to him.

"But why here, it's so sad and dreary," Leopold moaned.
"Our options were fairly limited, if you'll recall," Aes' voice was tinged with annoyance. It was not a tone Leopold had heard in his father's voice before. "Our clan is under attack by all of our worst enemies, it's a miracle we all made it underground alive, and every single day our survival is not guaranteed. I can respect your love of lounging around, but there is a time and a place. If you really want to return to your life of luxury, you should find something to do to help."
"Like what," Leopold groaned, pushing his head deeper into the dirt.
"I don't know, figure it out," Aes snapped. He must really be unhappy. His father never snapped. "I've been devoting all my energy figuring out how to free the beasts from the thrall they are under. They are just animals, they don't deserve to be treated like weapons. You aren't a hatchling anymore, I can't hold your hand through this, there are bigger things to worry about. If you aren't off the floor next time I pass by this way, I'll send your sister to drag you out somewhere useful."
That was a threat that worked. He knew any job Coral chose for him would be infinitely more difficult than any he could find for himself. Giving one last final groan, Leopold rolled off of his back and rose to his feet, beginning to wander aimlessly down the halls, searching for something useful to do.
Deities, he missed his days enjoying spa treatments, feeling the skilled hands of Patches down his back. He really liked the other mirror, he was realizing. Like, more than a friend. What would Patches think if he was rolling around in the dirt complaining while the spa worker was working to keep all the shade-touched dragons from being taken over from within.
Maybe there was something he could do to help, maybe that would help him win over Patches' affections.

He found Patches exactly where he expected him to be - making the rounds and applying the shade salve to all those afflicted.
"Leopold!" Patches seemed surprised. "Is that dirt? On your robe?"
"Don't mention it," Leopold grimaced. "Look, you seem busy, is there something I can do to help? I owe you for all the massages you have given me."
"I mean, you did pay for your treatments in full," Patches pointed out. "Not that I'm turning down the help, it's just - you don't like work."
"Yeah, well, things change," Leopold grumbled, rolling his eyes. "Give me a job to do before I change my mind and go back to rolling around the floor complaining."
"That sounds more like the Leopold I know," Patches laughed. "Look, this may be a stretch, but if you are really looking for something to do, I'm running out of herbs for my salves. Do you think you could go with someone to protect you and duck out to gather some more? I can draw up what they look like. I'd go myself, but all of these shade-touched dragons could lose control at any moment and I can't take that chance."
Leopold wanted to turn it down, decline it. It sounded difficult, and dangerous, and like a lot of work. But then he saw the sunken tiredness of Patches' eyes, and his heart thrummed with concern for the other mirror, and he realized he would do anything to help him out, even if it meant damaging his nails.
Besides, it's wasn't as if he could get any more dirty, right?

Clarinet dropped the letter she was holding and stared up at the bogsneak before her. He grinned at her.
"I hate to be the bearer of bad news," Yefrem said, still grinning widely.
"No you don't, you love this, you are rubbing this in my face," Clarinet hissed.
"I just figured you should know your mentor has passed," Yefrem laughed.
"Has been murdered." Clarinet growled.
"Words, words," Yefrem waved it off. "Look, I merely think after what happened with your brother and Laz, you should know to be careful."
"I'll be however I damn well please," Clarinet snarled. "Get out of my face, Yefrem."
"I'll go, I'll go," Yefrem held up his hands in faux surrender. "Just know, I have favour with the Oro family, if you need protection, we can work something out."
"Goodbye, Yefrem," Clarinet said, closing the door on his face.
She had to admit, she was tempted. She missed the protection her brother had offered her. She was sure Yefrem would do the same, if she complied. But she didn't trust the bogsneak, and it would mean giving up the control she had given.
In fact, she was building up her own little reputation in the Black Market. Perhaps Yefrem was feeling threatened by it, after all, he had angered enough dragons to warrant a mark being put out on him. Clarinet was sure she would get that job sooner than later, it would just depend on whether she would take it.

"Is he gone," Delwen asked, poking his head out from their shared bedroom.
"Yes baby, he's gone," Clarinet purred, pulling Delwen close. Yes, it would be nice to find a way to get that bogsneak under her control, but she had her own man wrapped around her finger. And Delwen pushed back a hell of a lot less than Yefrem would.
"You know, I was thinking, and I've been having a lot of fun with ceramics lately. Maybe I could start a business making forged pieces, get some of my own pocket money, then you wouldn't have to pay for everything," Delwen offered.
"Oh, you don't need to worry about that," Clarinet cooed. "I make enough for the both of us, and your dinky little crafts wouldn't fetch much money anyways, not very convincing, are they?"
"I guess not," Delwen deflated. "I just wanted to help."
"You help enough, my dear," Clarinet promised. "Just by being you. I don't know what I would do without your support, you make me feel better on my worst days."
"Yeah?" Delwen asked, brightening a little.
"Of course, my dear," Clarinet kissed him on the forehead. "Of course."

Perry felt angrier than he had ever felt in his life. If he were any angrier, he would multi-class into a barbarian and fly into a rage.
He wasn't the smartest chip on the cookie, he knew this, but he could still tell when his sister was hurting, and he had finally figured out why. He remembered the seeingless eyes, void of any colour or emotion, from when Hawkins had been touched.
Perry didn't know how to beat the shade, but he was sure if he punched it hard enough, it would have to work eventually.
So that was how he found himself, standing on withered grass between the shattered homes of The Refuge.
"COME OUT AND FACE ME!" He shouted into the still air. "I CHALLENGE YOU!"

"Me? You think you can take down me?" A voice materialized out of the voidy fog, followed by a face. The voice was laughing. "That's rich. How about you fight something a little more reasonable."
"I'll kill you," Perry growled.
"MALPHITE!" The voice called out, ignoring Perry's threat. "Are the beasts hungry? Some dinner has wandered in!"
With that, the face disappeared once more, and Perry could feel the rumble of large footsteps approaching.
Who cared if he had to fight these beasts first? He was going to kill each and every one of them, and then he would kill that stupid shade-face and save his sister.

I had time for another chapter today! Coli was Leopold (lv 4), Clarinet (lv 6) and Peregrine (lvs 1-2). No deaths, just a solid 30 rounds in the Training Fields!
Also, I deliberately added some words that are not words into Perry's part, as his INT stat is not high enough to know what words are real or not.
True to its name, the firebelly scorpion's venom first makes its presence known by the burning sensation in the victim's abdomen. Food poisoning at its worst.

Clarinet cursed.
She had never intended to have Delwen's children. She had never intended to have any helpless lives relying on her. Helpless hatchlings were not something she ever wanted to devote her attention to.
And yet here they were, three eggs, sitting before her.
She supposed she could sell them, but if people knew - or guessed - their origins, they might find some way to use them against her. Steal her DNA or something, she didn't know all that science stuff. But being raised by Cerys had given her enough understanding of bloodline magic to be wary.
No, it would be best if none of them ever were able to be linked back to her.
She would leave them on the streets. If someone else found them and wanted to sell them or raise them, that was their prerogative. As long as the link wasn't made to her. Besides, even if she cared about the wellbeing of the children inside the shells, eggs were resilient. It was common to find eggs with no parentage who had been existing for centuries. Nothing would happen to them until they were incubated, most likely.
That settled it. She had a plan, and after today, she would never have to think of them again.
From now on, she would have to be more careful with Delwen during their more intimate interactions.

"These are ours?" David asked again, trying to comprehend what was in front of him.
What sat before him and Pristi were two eggs. It seemed oddly familiar, in a way. He knew in his mind he had fathered children before, even if he did not remember it, and Maria had told him that the children who had hatched has disappeared.
"I know the timing is not ideal, but I didn't exactly choose them coming along," Pristi breathed, looking at David nervously. "Are you not happy?"
"Of course I'm happy!" David assured her. The fact that she thought he might not want them, want her, pained him deeply. That had not been his intention. "I'm just nervous. I know nothing about being a father. I've been absent mentally for so much of my life. I'm going to let them down, I'm going to let you down. Heck, I have four children out there somewhere, and I don't even know what they look like, let along their names. I've already failed them as a father. How do I know I'm not going to let them down? Get lost again?"
"Because, if you get lost again, I'll pull you back, just like I always do," Pristi said, pulling David close and holding him tight. She began to hum his favourite song, the one that always pulled him back the strongest, between her words. "I just hope that by the time they come, the world is safe for them again. Safe enough, anyways."
"I don't know if they'll ever truly be safe. The world is not safe," David sighed. "It's up to us to prepare them for the danger, as best we can."

"I want to fight," Persephone said.
"What?" Mandore looked up, surprised.
"I want to fight," Persephone repeated.
"I heard you, I just wasn't expecting you to say that in response to the news of Pristi's nest." Mandore said.
"I'm tired of sitting here, watching the ones I love die, or be taken from me," Persephone went on. "I know how to fight, I spent my first years aboard a pirate ship. Our clan is in danger, and I am just sitting here crying, waiting for the moment you or our children and friends are snatched from us. I can't stand it anymore. The waiting, the dread. I'm tired of hiding. I want to take back what is ours, I want to fight for our inn back, I want to fight for a safe place for our grandchildren to grow up."
"Well, if that's how you feel, I'll fight alongside you," Mandore said. "You know I will stand by you, no matter what comes."
"You don't know how to fight," Persephone pointed out. "The best way you can help me is by staying here, safe, and making sure that Pristi gets the support she needs raising those kids."
"You talk as if you aren't coming back," Mandore said darkly.
"Mandore, I promise I will do everything I can in my power to come back, but first and foremost I need to make sure that this clan is safe." Persephone said, leaning in and kissing her husband. "I'm going to go find my mother, I'm sure she's got a plan for fighting these jerks. I promise I'll say goodbye before I go."
"Please come back to me," Mandore said, seriously.
"I promise I won't throw my life away. I have something to fight for, something to return to, if that's what you're worried about. I'm not going to be reckless," Persephone vowed. "I love you."
"I love you too," Mandore said, leaning in for one last kiss.

I decided to combine the two breeding pulls into one chapter, seeing as they were immediately one right after the other. Just so we can get to the action faster, I feel each day slipping past as I get to the end of the locke, time is limited. This probably won't be the only one I combine.
I rolled the random number generator to determine which eligible pairs would be bred, so we got Clarinet and Delwen, and Pristi and David! Coincidentally, both nests are grandchildren of Mandore and Persephone, though Pristi's nest is not biologically linked. Speaking of which, I accidentally forgot until after I put the nest on that David is also related to Tyrian (Tyrian > Claude > George > David), making Pristi and David related through adoption (Tyrian > Persephone > Pristi). I figure it's okay, since Pristi is adopted, but that is usually something I try to avoid because I don't want to discount adopted kids as "less connected" by biological ones.
Also, disappointed a pair didn't make it on the nest? I'm planning to, once the locke is finished, breeding 5 nests (to fill up my nesting grounds) as a send-off to this clan! I've also decided to do it based off of reader requests, so if there is a nest you really want a hatchling from, you are able to get that combo. Some of the pairs I will be keeping, so we will likely see kiddos again sooner or later, but for some this will be the last opportunity to get bred, at least by me. I have yet to decide if it will be a vote, or if it will be a first come first serve request basis, but I'll have the details sorted out when the time comes. Also, any dragons I decide not to keep for my hibden will be up for grabs - I'll reach out to preclaims first, then I'll give readers a day or two to make grabs (for free) before opening it up to PWYW for the general public (even once it opens to everyone, readers can still take in whoever they want for free, I'm just giving the head start to give you the chance to claim your faves before they get taken by others). Anyways, all this is not relevant quite yet, but I am mentioning it right now so you can think about if you want anyone and who you may want.

Oh dang. What a great build up of anticipation! Making me both excited and nervous for the endgame, lol.
Also, eggies.
OH I wasn't expecting for there to be hatchlings so late! These poor children are going to be hatched into so much chaos. And it's so weird to be thinking about how eventually all these dragons will be headed off to different lairs soon. Two years of the same Pinkerlocke really gets you used to it.

It's sad that they won't have much of an opportunity to exist as characters! And yeah, I feel that. It's hard to decide who I want to keep and who I want to part with, I'm attached to so many of them and I can only justify keeping a handful. We will have to see what happens, I suppose!

Leo stood, panting, pelt dripping with sweat and blood. Before him lay the body of the beast he had just slain, with Nala's help.
In the not-so-distant past, he would have been too terrified to even attempt such a feat, but things had changed now. Everything that had ever been safe was gone now, destroyed, and if he ever wanted to be safe again...
...well, he was going to have to fight for it.

"Where are we going?" Hime asked, looking around wide-eyed. "Isn't it dangerous to go out here? My moms-"
"Who cares what your moms say," Quetzali interrupted. "Aren't you cramped down there? Don't you want to explore the world?"
Hime nodded enthusiastically.
Quetzali had shown up underground earlier that day, claiming to be her half-sister, and telling her she had something cool to show her, an adventure to take her on. Hime had been reluctant to go at first, her moms had been very clear about how dangerous the world above the tunnels was, but Quetzali had convinced her that her moms were just being overprotective, and they just didn't want her to see how cool everything was.
So far, it seemed scary, but Hime wasn't about to show Quetzali she was afraid, not when her sister seemed so confident, navigating the broken ground and festering ruins with ease. She seemed to know the perfect way to go, avoiding beasts. Hime could hear the screams of dragons and beasts alike in the distance.
Quetzali finally came to a halt in front of the charred tree.
"I brought her, have I earned my freedom now?" The guardian called into apparent nothingness.
Before Hime had the chance to ask what Quetzali meant by freedom, or who she was talking to, a shape merged out of the tree itself, as if it had been infesting it. The face of a dragon appeared out of the strange nothingness-fog, cackling.

"That sure was fast," The spiral raised an eyebrow. "You really care only for your own hide. Are you sure you don't want to join us for good?"
"I'm only turning her over because she means nothing to me. My mother abandoned me for her, she is not my sister," Quetzali spat, glaring at Hime. "I just want to be free so I can stop being the bad guy."
"Whatever helps you sleep at night," Doben snorted. "I would say turning over an innocent dragon makes you the 'bad guy', you would be better suited alongside dragons for which good and bad are not an important distinction. Only power matters here."
"I'm not listening to your lies," Quetzali growled. "I brought you your bait, we are even."
"Indeed we are, but know you are always welcome back," Doben grinned.
"In your dreams," Quetzali rolled her eyes and began to walk away, disappearing into the fog.
"What's happening?" Hime asked, bottom lip quivering. She was trying hard not to cry.
"Oh, you sister came under our protection when she was not rescued down to the tunnels, and she bartered for her freedom with you. She said you would lure out some of my enemies, the ones I want to see destroyed. And killing them will bring out more dragons seeking revenge, and more, and more, until the entire Refuge is slain. Then, I will have completed my bargain and the True Nature Dragons will be free of your plaguehuggers, and my shade domain will be able to run unchallenged."
And so it was that Hime felt something for the first time in her sheltered life. Betrayal. And it hurt more than anything she had ever experienced.

Coli was Leo (lv 8), Hime (lvs 1-6) and Quetzali (lvs 1-6). It's a miracle everyone made it through alive, 50 rounds in the Woodland Path with two of the dragons starting at level 1. I had even been a bit reckless for the first through levels, because I have been hoping for some deaths to raise the stakes in this final month. But as with the other coli days since the tree caught fire, it has remained without fatality. (Funny how we had such a high volume of deaths before all this, and now, when I actually want them, nothing.) Anyways, by the time the two sisters reached level 4 and were actually a high enough level for the venue, I started actually trying realizing any chance of death was futile. We didn't even see any of those ice dryads that have been the bane of my existence, even with a full nature team.
Anyways, I applaud my good luck, and maybe it will be a good thing if it continues. After all, it seems kinda mean to hope for deaths.
