Let's Go to War!
Previous challenge: For the Throne
The small guardian landed on the frozen ground and raised his head high, staring around at the dragons emerging to confront him with a look of challenge in his malice filled, pink eyes. He might've been small compared to some other guardians but compared to the skydancer leading the patrol, he towered above them.
"State your business. You're on our Kingdom's territory." The skydancer glowered at him from under her golden helmet.
A snarl formed beneath his birdskull mask. He'd been kicked out of his home after losing a throne that was rightfully his. Tantris didn't want to waste his time answering to some lowly soldier. "I've heard word of a powerful dragon living in this... You call this a kingdom?"
The Cloudscrape Crag didn't look like it was home to a kingdom, let alone that any dragons could live up here for long. At least not this high up. The guardian huffed, his breath clouding around his muzzle. "...I want to speak with your leader. It's a matter of importance."
The skydancer was unamused, her antennae twitching as if irritated. "I'll take you to see Celeste. She is our deity's champion."
"Champion? I want to speak with your leader." He stood his ground, refusing to follow.
Her feathers were raising now as well and a few other dragons in the patrol began shuffling around uneasily as they readied themselves to attack if ordered. "Our leader- our goddess- has no time for some rogue dragon like yourself. You're lucky I'm even considering letting you speak to anyone instead of sending you on your way."
"I am not a rogue." Tantris spat the word and sank his claws into the frozen dirt and rock beneath the snow. "I am the rightful king to my father's throne and I demand you treat me with respect."
"A prince?" She obviously wasn't impressed. "You don't look like one."
"I was tossed out. My father thought some peasant he took under his wing would make a better queen..." The memory still made his blood boil even if it had been years ago. "I want revenge and well... I heard some interesting information that lead me here. To your little 'kingdom'."
"Should I be impressed?" The skydancer flicked her tail impatiently. "You're no king if you were beaten by some peasant. Leave. Now."
A growl rose in his throat. He'd fight the whole patrol if he had to but he wasn't about to leave. "I stayed with the Empire of Death. I know what happened between your deity and the war you failed to win for her. I could offer information t-"
Cold wind swept overhead along with a dragon's shadow as it flew above. Tantris looked up to see an angelic looking pearlcatcher descending gracefully onto a nearby ledge. The sunlight made her crystal-like scales glitter and her cold gaze focused on him. The other dragons in the patrol had already bowed down, averting their eyes from their deity.
"Pyrite." The single word made the skydancer stand to attention. The pearlcatcher waved dismissively. "Take the patrol back. I'll speak with our... 'guest' personally."
"Yes, Sanctus." She bowed and made her leave quickly, though not before shooting Tantris one last look of distain.
The 'deity' turned her attention back to him. "You have information on the Veiled Sanctuary in the Empire of Death?"
"Some." He nodded.
"That could be very useful to me... But what is it you'd like in return, False King?"
"Aid in taking back my kingdom. I am the rightful heir and it's time I show that."
Her stare was unwavering as she silently judged him. "I'm afraid 'some' information is not enough."
"I can get you more."
"No." Her seraph wings flared, as if she were about to depart. "You will get me more. Head for Light and make camp there. Spy on them and report back to Celeste. She'll relay the information to me."
"There's an emperor in Light." He scowled. Was this dragon trying to get him killed?
"I'm sure you'll hear it coming before it can kill you. Or did your arrogance deafen and blind you?" She rose to her feet, her wings still spread. "Light is safest. Their dragons patrol their Shadow and Plague borders and unless you can breathe underwater I suggest taking my advice."
"Fine." He grudgingly agreed. Sanctus was the easiest ally he could find at the moment- given he had leverage to help her in order to help himself.
"Then we have a deal." She took off back into the air, her antique scales blending into the white world around them almost immediately.
Tantris grumbled and began flying away from the frozen flight, glad to be out of there but wishing his revenge would be coming swifter. He'd get her information... but in the process he'd also take the opportunity to build himself an army for the war to come.
