Welcome!
Hello, welcome to the updated Phantoms Subspecies thread! This is an OPEN SUBSPECIES!
I created the original version, Murderous Phantoms, back in 2016. However, it died out as I was still rather new at the time and the old thread has since been deleted. You can still find the IC thread for it HERE or the newer IC thread if you're interested in seeing them. Pls don't post on those. Put your comments on this thread!!!
It was really fun to remake and expand on this all flight subspecies! Feel free to show off your own on this thread and ask questions if you have any!
As mentioned above, this is an open subspecies. This means your dragons don't have to be related to any of the pairs or already registered dragons to join. They just have to have the correct colors/genes!

Below are variants found throughout Sornieth. Flight and Breed don't seem to effect what type of Phantom they become after death. Strangely, however, it seems they can breed to create ghostly hatchlings! Studies suggest this is due to Phantoms combining their magic and souls together to create such beings. Odd but an interesting occurrence nonetheless!

Specters are harmless spirits who tend to dwell in areas where they died. Some however, have taken to residing in their favorite location to visit while they were alive. It's very unfortunate if that happens to be their old home as the new owners may not appreciate the company. They can be rather helpful and friendly and some wonder if these dragons are even aware they're dead.

[columns]A very real threat despite being dead. These dragons wander in order to find those that killed them. They're memories are often fuzzy however and sometimes they mistakenly attack the wrong dragons. Wanderers who happen across the path of these phantoms should make haste and find a new location to stay. These dragons are loners and have been known to attack other phantom variants including other murderous phantoms. It's rumored that they can never find peace.[nextcol][/columns]

All talk and no bite so to speak. They've had traumatic deaths and have taken to stalking the areas of their place of death. They tend to scare unwitting passerby's and chase them out of the area. Some of them have bones showing through their bodies, which only serves to scare more dragons, while others may have excess plasm. Places haunted by Poltergeist are often abandoned shortly after, though they don't do more than scare dragons off. Occasionally, they may group up with other Poltergeist in the area to cause mischief. Their actions rarely cause death but to avoid potential injury, it's best not to stick around their haunting grounds too long.

[columns]These dragons are vary hard to find yet are actually one of the more common types of Phantoms. They're rather shy and don't like to show themselves to living dragons. [columns][nextcol]
Also known as Mourners. These variants are easily identified by the streaks of color down their face and mournful cries. Dragons of this variant usually died before their time was up but did not have anyone to take vengeance on. They're peaceful unless disturbed, upon which they may lash out or worse put a curse on you to meet an untimely end. They tend to wander and congregate in graveyards and other abandoned places. Their appearance seems to mimic that of old photographs, though the reason as to why is unknown.

the Possessed
[columns]These spirits are not to be trifled with nor should there be an attempt to summon them without proper precautions. They've lingered around for so long the original dragon has become lost and corrupted by darkness. These demonic entities can cause physical harm to those who aren't careful to avoid angering them. Some can even curse the living. This variant can possess dragons and physically corrupt their appearance. The only remains of the dragon they take control of is the bright patches of color along their dark bodies.

These spirits are fragments of the Shade that appear as draconic entities, however were never dragons to begin with. They tend to hunt dragons and other creatures alike with deadly efficiency, which has only adapted over the years to hold their own even against dragons trained to stop and contain them like Gaolers. While the origins of these spirits are unknown there are rumors: some claim they came through the Forbidden Portal while others believe they formed when the Shade returned. There's reason to believe they may have been linked to the formation of The Possessed.

Below are Ancient variants found throughout Sornieth. Flight and Breed have an influence over the looks of these Phantoms, likely due to the divisions between the deities and their territories in the past. Like their Modern counter parts, these spirits can breed, though it appears the magic used in such a process is limited to their species. It appears their offspring also only form when created within their deity's flight.

Manifestations
These dragons have long since died and their spirits have taken on the coloration of their element. The more faded they are the further gone they've become from the dragon they'd once been. Manifestations- also known as Elemental Orbs- are usually harmless depending on the type, and not seen often due to many having simply faded away through time. Those who see them should consider themselves lucky!
While it's more common to find Manifestations that match their breed's origin flight, with their reappearance in the modern world there have been sighting of them with mis-matched flights! (ex: a Fire element Gaoler)

[nextcol]A veilspun only group of Manifestations. They are hard to find amongst the pines of Shadow and even harder to find outside their home territory. They are rather darkly colored, though the size depends on how much elemental magic they currently possess rather than the size they were when alive. Like their living kin, they often live in groups and watch from the shadows.
While there are two different appearances for these dragons, observations on their behavior show that they are very similar to one another. Those with darker coloration (top image) tend to be more prone to aggression and usage of more sinister forms of Shadow magic while lighter purple (bottom image) Shadow Orbs tend to enjoy cause more mischief than harm- it's suggested that following them isn't a good idea should you find any, as you may end up hopelessly lost until they, hopefully, decide to help you find a way out.

Ice Variants
[columns]A gaoler only group of Manifestations. They are hard to find amongst the ice and snow of Ice and even harder to find outside their home territory. They are usually lightly colored however some take on a darker appearance that can easily blend into a snow storm or rockface. Their size depends on how much elemental magic they currently possess rather than the size they were when alive. Unlike their living kin, Ice Orbs tend to stick to themselves or those who died with them.
The two different variants wildly differ from each other. The lightly colored variants (top image) will rarely make their presence known to travelers. However, they often bring tragedies such as chilling blizzards and avalanches with them. If you see them, the best thing to do is stay on alert and try to go a different direction. The darker variants (bottom image) are often thought to be the ones to cause danger, although in reality they silently try to warn dragons off and save them from disaster. Due to their coloration and often snowy conditions however, both of these variants are difficult to see.[nextcol]

[nextcol]A banescale only group of Manifestations. They are hard to find amongst the smoke and lava and even harder to find outside their home territory. They are rather brightly colored and are one of the easiest Elemental Orb variants to find. Their size depends on how much elemental magic they currently possess rather than the size they were when alive, which can cause smaller Fire Orbs to easily be mistaken for drifting embers. Like their new generation of kin, they have taken up singing- rumor has it they're quite adept at speaking coatl as well.
While there are two different appearances for these dragons, observations on their behavior show that they are very similar to one another. Those with darker coloration (top image) tend to often get mistaken for Funnel Ghosts by in-experienced ghost hunters. However, these Phantoms do not reside only in graveyards nor do they ever show malicious intent upon being disturbed. The smokier variant (bottom image) is the easiest to spot due to their bright coloration. However they tend to stick close to bodies of lava or flames to absorb the heat and elemental energy. While they mean no harm, it's advised against touching Fire Orbs, as the heat they give off can cause burns.

Plague Variants
[columns]An Aberration only group of Manifestations. They are usually found lurking around the Wyrmwound and other similar pits of disease. While both of these variants may appear to be zombies—and are often mistaken as such—they are not actually reanimated dead. These Plague Orbs often find entertainment in stalking after living dragons and watching as they test their ability to adapt and survive such a harsh world. Unlike their modern brethren, they usually stick to themselves.
Both variants tend to be vicious and have been known to cause outbreaks of viruses or cause physical threats with their remaining magic. While the act is often seen as malicious to outsiders, these manifestations genuinely see this as them helping the living better themselves. After all, if they can survive the dead's trials then surely the living will be all the stronger for it. Even in death... even after failing to thrive... they wish to make Mother proud and ensure their living brethren will adapt and survive.[nextcol]
