if these sweet cinnamon rolls start dying, I WILL cry. I love them

Wow, this update was a ride! Enser wants to go THROUGH the portal?! I didn't see that one coming! (and if I should have, boy, I need to pay more attention...) I'm so glad everyone is okay!

I'm glad Jordan had the sense to leave Talfan...though I'm not liking that underground lab...

btw, I totally see Eiggrigg as Mama and I'm just...teach these babies how to protect themselves. They're gonna screw up, just...keep them alive. please.

@Petall

Eigrigg is the kind of teacher that I’d love to have, lol. I see Jordan has developed some self-preservation instincts, but I’m more interested to know why Tal is so invested in this whole eldritch monster thing.

@Tiffkaboo

If Pinkerton kills them, there's going to be a riot on his hands.

Aw, that's adorable, I love that you think of Eigrigg that way!

@Tirtouga678

Eigrigg's a lot of fun, that's for sure! And yes, Talfan is a fascinating one...

It seemed like not a lot had happened, and she hadn't learned as much as she would have expected. However, Magiere had gotten marginally better since her conversation with Garnet, and the guardian still felt exhilarated about having discovered her own brand of healing magic. She had yet to talk to Midnight about all that. Things had been awkward between the two of them since she had healed Eigrigg. To make matters worse, she had hardly seen Enser since getting back. The wildclaw had always been off doing some 'special lessons.' Today was the first day that she was going to be properly spending time with him, as all of the students had been given the week off to celebrate the Thundercrack Carnival. The three students were making their way to Starwhisper Crescent in silence. Ifor kept shooting glances at Midnight, but the imperial was very deliberately avoiding her gaze. Enser seemed too lost in thought to notice, which was unusual for the lively wildclaw. He should be all hyped up for the festival. Maybe the rain was putting him off. It had not stopped raining since they had killed the bilworper, and now thunder and lightning joined the fray. It was hardly fitting weather for an outdoor celebration, but there was something about the electricity in the air that made everything feel alive. When they arrived in the town, Ifor was shocked to see the transformation that had taken place. For a town that prided itself on reliance on magic more than technology, they had taken on an awful lot of contraptions. Electric lights cast the town in a bright glow, harsh compared to the softer light of the Brightshine Jubilee, but still a grateful addition with the darkness of the thick cloud cover. Fairground rides had been set up anywhere there was enough space for them. A carousel sat in the center of town, and a rollarcoaster wrapped its way around the settlement. A ferris wheel rose high above the buildings, providing what Ifor was sure was a great view of Starwhisper Crescent. There were also a variety of machines run by travelling lightning mechanics, promising strange effects like quickly drying a wet mane, or a machine that toasted bread without the use of a fire. There was even a bizarre sort of screen that projected moving black and white images. Around these contraptions, a number of stalls had been set up, promising lightning-fried food and valuable merchandise. One stall in particular even boasted electrical implants. Ifor couldn't tell if they served any particular purpose, or if they were just a strange lightning fashion. Many of the dragons milling around the crowd were sporting these electrical wires, providing a lightning-blue glow to their scales. "Why don't we all split up to earn our sprockets, then meet back up at The Many Eyes to spend the afternoon together," Enser offered. The wildclaw still looked distracted. "Are you sure we'll be welcome there?" Midnight asked. "The last time we saw Talfan, we sort of beat him up." Ifor's stomach dropped. She hadn't thought of that. Did that mean that she wouldn't be able to go and see Iapetos' performances anymore? The thought made her sadder than she cared to admit. "To deny us service would be bad business manners," Enser pointed out. "Besides, I'm pretty sure he has more of an issue with Eigrigg than he does with us. If you're still worried, I'll clear the air before we go. If he takes issue with it, we can meet outside the doors." Ifor nodded, and watched as her classmates went their separate ways, trying to decide what she wanted to do to earn her fun at this year's festival. Midnight wandered the streets of the town aimlessly, trying to decide what he wanted to do. There were still a number of magically directed stalls, but he didn't feel like doing magic. What was the point if he couldn't do what he wanted to? It was then that a smaller stall caught his eye. It was tucked away, out of the rain and out of view of the flashy lights and loud beeps of the machines. It was run by a young spiral, and her red eyes caught his immediately. They beckoned him in, and Midnight found his eyes darting to her sign: "let me help you out, earn sprockets." Midnight wasn't sure that he needed help, but something drew him in anyways. Maybe it was the understanding way she looked at him, like she could see his soul if he would just let her. Before he knew it, he was taking a seat on the stool on the other side of her makeshift counter. "Hello, I'm Isolda, what's you're name?" The spiral asked. "Midnight," the imperial responded. "Why are you doing this? Don't therapists usually get paid to do this, not the other way around?" "Oh, I'm not a therapist," Isolda laughed. "Just think of me as a friendly travelling peace-keeper. I like helping other dragons with their problems. I don't need money for it." "I don't need help," Midnight objected, perhaps a bit too quickly. "I think you know that you do, deep down, otherwise you wouldn't be here," Isolda responded. "But if you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to." "I just don't understand!" Midnight blurted out, and all of a sudden the words poured out of him like a faucet. "I've done everything right! I've studied magic, I've taken risks, I've learned so much, but for some reason I can't grasp healing magic! I've tried, but it just won't come to me. And then Ifor stumbles in, and don't get me wrong, she's sweet, but she can't do magic worth squat. And then all of a sudden she pulls healing magic out of nowhere and she's a natural! It's not fair! What has she done to deserve this!" "What makes you think it's something to be deserved?" Isolda asked, eyes gleaming. "It's not!" Midnight jumped in defence. "It's just- there's nothing I've wanted more. It's why I decided to go to Astra Academy. I could have gotten an apprenticeship back in Windkeep Tower easily, but I wanted more! And I've been learning lots, but I want healing magic!" Isolda listened, and nodded. "And this Ifor, you say that she struggles to do magic?" "Yeah, she's never really been able to do anything with it," Midnight admitted. "Did you ever think that maybe she might feel the same way you do about healing magic when she can't do other forms of magic?" Isolda asked. Midnight stared at the spiral. He thought they were supposed to be talking about him! But at her words, he did feel a twinge of guilt. He supposed it would be difficult for her, especially when she was trying so hard. "Did I hit the mark?" Isolda asked, raising an eyebrow. "Maybe," Midnight responded, not ready to admit it quite yet. "But what about my healing magic?" "Did you ever consider that there might be other ways to heal rather than having healing magic?" Isolda asked. "Maybe you don't have the innate ability to do with with your magic, but there are other ways you can learn it. Herbs, for instance. You could even use them to make potions, if you wanted to give it a magical flare." "My father is an alchemist," Midnight considered. "I guess potion-making isn't too different from that." "I think you just need to find what works for you. I can see how it would be difficult to struggle with it, especially when you are used to everything else coming so easily to you, but just because it's not something that you can do the way you want to doesn't mean that you can't do anything at all," Isolda reasoned. Midnight had to admit that she had a point. "Thank you, that was actually pretty helpful," Midnight admitted begrudgingly. "Of course! I'm happy to help!" The spiral grinned, pulled out a bag of sprockets, and handed it to the imperial. "Thanks for trusting me enough to share." Midnight moved to rejoin the crowd before Isolda called out to him again. "Also, I think you should talk to Ifor. Let her know how you feel, and listen to her talk about how she feels. I think that will help." Midnight nodded, not sure if he was going to follow that particular piece of advice. He shook his head, trying to clear it of the truly bizarre interaction that had just happened. Enser had gone straight to The Many Eyes after splitting up with his classmates. He had wanted to talk to Talfan, and the best way to ensure that his friends wouldn't interrupt was to send them collecting sprockets for a while. The ridgeback was at the counter, as always, seeming a little frazzled by the increased patronage of festival-goers, but otherwise content. Enser took a seat at the bar, and waited for him to come over to take his order. "What do you want?" "Who's to say I'm not an ordinary customer today?" Enser raised an eyebrow. "Though you're right, I am here for a reason. And you should know before you want to do anything fishy, I've asked my friends to meet me here, so if I'm not here, they'll know something's up." "Well, this better be fast. If you haven't noticed, I have customers," Talfan rolled his eyes. "First of all, I want to order my usual, then we'll talk," Enser said. "I'm here as a paying customer, I'm not just here to make you uncomfortable." The ridgeback quickly made up Enser's drink and served it to him. The wildclaw took a long sip before speaking again. "First off, I want to say that if you ever want to take anything out on me and my friends for what happened with the bilworper, I want you to direct that at me and Eigrigg. We're the ones who were messing with you, Ifor and Midnight hardly know what's going on, so I want you to treat them like ordinary customers every time they visit. Can you do that?" Enser asked. "As long as they don't mess with me again, yeah, sure," Talfan shrugged."They seem like young weaklings anyways." "Don't speak about my friends that way," Enser warned, flashing a glare at Talfan. "They are stronger than you could ever know. But that's besides the point. I was wondering if we could come to some sort of an agreement about the portal." "What do you mean," Talfan's voice had dropped to a low growl. "Well, you obviously want something with it, and I want something with it," Enser explained. "I don't think I completely approve of whatever it is you're doing, because Eigrigg doesn't, but I also don't think Eigrigg will approve of my own plans, so maybe yours aren't as bad as I think they are. Care to change my mind?" The ridgeback laughed. "You're not getting information out of me that easily." "Fair enough, it was worth a shot," Enser shrugged, downing the last of his drink. "Just know, I'm doing my own research, and if you ever want to collaborate and share information, I'd be willing to make some sort of a trade." Leaving the bartender with that, Enser left, ready to earn his own sprockets. Ifor had managed to earn some sprockets by singing a song and having it recorded on some large black disk. It had been an experience like none other to hear it played back at her by running a needle over it and hearing it through something that looked like a large trumpet horn. She had never heard her own voice before, and she wasn't sure that she liked it. Still, she had gotten her festival currency, and a piece of her voice would be immortalized forever. She had even gotten a copy of the disk to take home with her, not that she had a fancy machine to listen to it on. She had briefly checked the price, and realized she would need five hundred sprockets to buy one of the cheaper ones. She was on her way back to The Many Eyes to meet up with Enser and Midnight when she stumbled over a smaller dragon. She sidestepped out of the way and gasped when she recognized the form of a familiar mirror. "I'm so sorry!" Ifor gasped, feeling all of the blood drain out of her face. She felt like an idiot. "No harm done!" Iapetos grinned, tipping his hat at her. "I have to say, I heard your voice when you were getting your record made, you've got something beautiful there!" Ifor stared at the mirror, at a complete loss for words. She tried to find her tongue to say something, anything, but it wouldn't move. She was forced to watch voicelessly as the mirror disappeared into the crowd. She couldn't believe that Iapetos had complimented her on her voice. "You good there?" Enser asked cheekily. "You look like a nekomata's got your tongue!" "It's nothing," Ifor mumbled, looking at her feet. "Let's just get inside and see if Midnight is waiting for us." ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @Leopardmask @Sabariel @Drachenschwinge @Autumnus @GrinningWolf24 @Glassowary @CleverTrick @Stormlark @Dakala @Moonweaverr @Tirtouga678 @unicorn9 @Disillusionist @catmeow1 @Tynethyne @SkullGeist @Dynami @ShinyDecidueye @Tiffkaboo @secretlylying @MisterMylez @BarbaraFett @Aetherstorm @VeniVidiVici @YakileBekrea @MeepBoie400 @CorvvusCorax @WeaverofLies @myriadofstars @HauntedWhale @slp0001 @amxndael @Solaristigres @NovaBorn ----- Gosh, festival updates are my favourite to write! I love imagining how different clans celebrate different festivals, and figuring out how to incorporate the merch into the story! Isolda is a travelling dragon in my clan right now. She'll probably show up in another update or two before heading on her way! Also, I just opened up a lair review shop today, if anyone is interested in that! It's PWYW!

"I have to say, I heard your voice when you were getting your record made, you've got something beautiful there!"

Ifor stared at the mirror, at a complete loss for words. She tried to find her tongue to say something, anything, but it wouldn't move. She was forced to watch voicelessly as the mirror disappeared into the crowd. She couldn't believe that Iapetos had complimented her on her voice.

"You good there?" Enser asked cheekily. "You look like a nekomata's got your tongue!"

"It's nothing," Ifor mumbled, looking at her feet. "Let's just get inside and see if Midnight is waiting for us."

Gosh, festival updates are my favourite to write!

It's PWYW!

This is really making me want a scene where Ifor and Iapetos are singing and dancing together.

ahh oh my gosh so i caught up on the story today (i hadn't read any of it yet when i was added to the pinglist, but i've finally read it up to now!) and it's so frickin good!!

i absolutely love all the characters! i can relate to ifor with how nervous she can be – i'm the type who hates public speaking and such lol. i love watching her grow! it's really cool. enser is such an interesting boye as well! his vibe is just great and the mystery around him and the portal is intriguing :0 i quite like midnight as well – he has his faults like everyone else, but he's obviously growing as a person and you're writing his character development really well!

the whole plot is just so good in general. like, writing is so much more than just being able to write pretty words and i think you do that well here! none of the characters feel like cookie-cutter personalities, and even those who seem "bad" (such as talfan or magiere) obviously have their own motivations that make sense for who they are. and the portal mystery itself is awesome! i like the little hints and such dropped here and there – at one point (possibly when eigrigg talked to talfan for the first time in the story, can't remember exactly) i realised that some things (garnet seeing that creature, the talfan and eigrigg drama, the creature enser was trying to find) were probably tied together and i was like oOohhhh.

just...,,, for some reason these recent "chapters" have me bouncing in my seat!! i was so worried when eigrigg was hurt, but ifor discovering her powers was so cool! and the fact that eigrigg's capsule gene turned into crackle based on how ifor healed her made me go "that's GENIUS :0". i'm just feeling so invested in this story right now! gonna be real devastated if one of them dies lol

also, ifor's little crush is adorable lol

excuse the rant hahaha, i just really love this! i can't wait for the next updates! you're a great writer c:

also... can't promise anything, but i might have a go at drawing one of the dragons from the story he he he

Oh my goodness, your elaborate comments have really made my day! You have no idea how happy it makes me that you are enjoying this story and the characters so much! All these characters are growing to be very close to my heart, so it's great to see other people enjoying them! It's great to have you aboard as a reader and I look forward to seeing what you think as the story progresses!
