Friday stood at her side, tail pressed against her back in reassurance. A few feet away from them, Clarissa stood, eying the palace with determination. Kael and Corinn were back at the camp, looking after the eggs. “I don’t want to do this,” Friehalt gulped. “You’ve got this, and I’ll be with you the whole time,” Friday promised. “You’ve got nothing to fear,” Clarissa growled. “We’ll just strut in there and show them who owns the place.” “Are you sure it’s the best idea for you to go, Clarissa? Clarissa split from the couple fairly quickly, darting down the corridors she had grown up in. The halls seemed strangely deserted as Friehalt and Friday made their way towards the ballroom. The ridgeback was trembling, terrified of how the Black Market dragons would react to seeing her again. It wasn’t difficult to find the ballroom. The sound of celebrating dragons was easy to follow down the echoing stone corridors. Friehalt and Friday stepped into the ballroom and looked around. Jett was lounging on a lavish seat on a stage, above everyone else, Scoril at his side. He had a glass in his hand and was downing the contents happily. The skydancer at his side was keeping an eye on everything. When she caught Friehalt’s gaze, her eyes narrowed, and the ridgeback wanted to disappear into the wall. She did nothing, however, leaving Friehalt and her mate to mill around the party. It was clearly made to house a city-full of dragons. But the dragons present seemed to be having a good time, or at least were putting up the appearances of doing so. Colourful banners and kites hung from the ceiling, and an enchanted wind was blowing through the room, ringing bells as it went. It was very jarring for such a carefree flight to be celebrated in such a heavy-handed way, but Jett clearly wanted to make his power known. “You have some nerve, showing your face here again,” a familiar growl sounded behind Friehalt. She spun around, seeing her sister glaring at her. “Ah, Fallstar!” Friehalt pasted a fake smile on her face. “It’s a pleasure to see you again! Have you met my mate, Friday?” “Don’t try to cover up your treachery,” Fallstar growled. “You abandoned us, and now you have the nerve to show your face here?” “You’re just bitter because Jett hasn’t made you one of his Shade-touched heirs yet, aren’t you?” Friehalt snorted, surprised by her own boldness. “Go pick a fight elsewhere, you have bigger things to worry about than me. I am simply making my allegiance to King Jett known.” Fallstar snarled and turned back into the small crowd. Friehalt could tell her sister was desperately trying to keep an eye on her in a not-obvious way. “She seems charming,” Friday snorted. “We’ve never really gotten along, it’s not too much of a loss,” Friehalt shrugged, glancing around. “What do we do here? I don’t know what the Shadowbinder wants of me.” “Just wait and see, maybe things will become clear later,” Friday suggested. Just then, a coatl brushed past the couple, holding a squirming spiral in her talons. The spiral was light purple, and had a skeleton pattern across his scales. He was hurling a number of choice curse words at his assailant, who seemed entirely unfazed by the fight he was putting up. Friehalt watched in interest as the coatl made her way up to the throne and threw the spiral on the floor, holding him in place. Friehalt nudged Friday, and the two moved closer. “What do we have here?” Jett asked, getting to his feet and looking down at the spiral. “This is the hooligan who has been causing all the ruckus today, sir,” Kass said, respectfully. “Permission to take him out? He was stealing from one of your citizens.” “No, not yet, he might prove useful to our court,” Jett held up a hand. “Wait!” A blue spiral suddenly yelled, eyes wide, and rushed towards the captured spiral. She cupped his head in her hands and stared deeply into his face, examining the facial structure with her horizontal eyes. “What do you want,” Jett spat. “You’ve made it clear you don’t want anything to do with me, Seaberry. You have no right to interfere now.” “Jett, this is my son,” Seaberry snarled, glaring protectively at him. “Don’t you dare take him away from me, the city has already done enough!” “Get your hands off me!” The spiral spat, hitting his mother away. “I don’t know you.” “No, but I’d know you anywhere,” Seaberry said softly. “I didn’t think you’d come back, when the city took you away. I had to raise your sister on her own, without any siblings, carrying the loss of you on my shoulders alone.” “Wait,” Jett’s eyes gleamed with interest. “Are you saying that this is Karma’s clutchmate?” “Yes,” Seaberry’s eyes flashed. “But you’re not taking him.” “I can make my own choices, lady!” The spiral snorted. “It depends what this fine fellow has to offer me!” He grinned a toothy grin. “I’m Kip, at your service!” “Kip, my son,” Jett grinned crookedly. “How would you like a place in my courts?” “A prince!” Kip’s eyes widened. “Now this is something I could get used to!” “Well, in that case, welcome home!” Jett said, nodding for Kass to release him. The coatl reluctantly obliged. “That skydancer doesn’t seem very happy,” Friday remarked, nodding at Scoril. “No, she wouldn’t be. She’s Scoril, Jett’s mate. I mean, she’s aware he’s had relations before her, but she doesn’t like to think about it much,” Friehalt commented. “She’s endlessly loyal to him, it’s a pity he doesn’t return the favour. That could come back to bite him pretty hard someday, she’s pretty powerful.” Then something clicked. “What if she’s what we need?” Friehalt turned to Friday excitedly, bringing her voice down to a low whisper. “Jett doesn’t seem up to anything sinister this festival, maybe the Shadowbinder wants us to identify possible allies! Build up a resistance! There’s no way we can take him down on our own!” “And Scoril would be a valuable ally, if we could get her to turn against Jett,” Friday observed. “Yeah, that’s the difficult part,” Friehalt agreed. “But something tells me she’ll only let herself be pushed so far. Jealousy and heartbreak are powerful emotions. If we swoop in at the right time…” “Then Jett loses a powerful ally.” ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @HauntedWhale @Disillusionist @AlchemyFox @Tirtouga678 @catmeow1 @Leopardmask @Midwinter @chantric @Dynami @ShinyDecidueye @tigressRising @REEEEEEEEEEEEEE @Stitched @Willnotgogently @Sabariel @MisterMylez @Skystrider @Starongie @icetail0912 @myriadofstars @Aetherstorm @Weredogalism @Nargeorgicorn @WeaverofLies @herobrinna @secretlylying @Azurepocalypse @GoldictheHedgefx @CobaltMoon @Tiffkaboo @Orodruin @SkullGeist @Violeteevee @Amaluna @DragonPrincess27 @Dakala @Drachenschwinge @Glassowary @GrinningWolf24 ----- And we are now caught up with my Pinkerton pulls! She knew she would still be visible to most shadow dragons, who would be skilled at seeing through a basic shroud, but any help was better than none. The mirror had a bounty on her head, she was sure, and she wanted to evade capture. There was, of course, the chance that her current mission would lead her to that very same fate regardless, but it was a risk she was willing to take. She had to see if her father's family was okay. Of course, Clarissa still wasn't at peace with the rift in her family, but she sure as hell knew that her father and his family didn't deserve to be locked up with Jett. It was easy enough to make her way to the prison tower - everyone was busy at the ball anyways. It would be navigating through the prison tower that would be the difficult part. The door creaked open as she slid inside, and she was faced with a sudden chill and a dank smell. It took a moment to adjust to the darkness. There was a number of cells on the main level, but only one of them was filled. The others must have been placed hire or lower, to prevent any chance of escape. "Clarissa?" Dahlia croaked as she made her way to the bars of the cell, eyes wide. "What are you doing here?" "I came to check on you all," Clarissa responded in a hushed voice. "See if there was anything I could do." "Security is pretty tight here," Dahlia sighed. "I got one of the lower security cells, I'm young enough and far enough from the crown to not pose much of a threat. Everyone else is higher up, expect for Elixabete, who is lower down with Edna." "Edna?" Clarissa tilted her head quizzically. "You know how apparently both Elixa and Edna are destined to destroy each other in battle? Well, Edna has taken that to heart apparently and has taken charge of making sure Elixa doesn't escape. They spar regularly - I can here it from here. They sound pretty brutal." The nocturne shivered. "And what about the rest of you? Who guards you?" Clarissa asked. "Everyone in Jett's group takes turns, for the most part. Usually it's Raithyra or Fallstar. Sometimes we get Elladan. Occasionally we get Solstice," Dahlia quaked harder as she brought up her adopted sister, and Clarissa realized she had started to cry. "She's changed. I don't know who she is anymore." "Yeah, sometimes dragons really surprise you," Clarissa empathized. "It's hard to say what people's true colours are." "And what are your true colours?" Dahlia asked. "Are you really going to help us? Or are you going to run away. I know you haven't always liked or trusted us." "I can't promise anything," Clarissa admitted. "But I'll see what I can do. There's a group of us in the Knowledge District Wilds trying to find out ways to dethrone Jett, or at the very least, destroy the Shade in him. We have Edna's daughter with us, and Jett's son. They have some really good ins to how Jett functions. We just need to find the weak points." Dahlia nodded, though Clarissa could see the mistrust in her eyes. "Be careful, Clarissa. Don't get tangled up with the wrong dragons. I don't want to see you get stabbed in the back." "I'll do my best," The mirror vowed. "You should go now, the guard should be making their round soon," Dahlia shivered again. "I'll be looking out for you." "Thank you, you've given me some really helpful information," Clarissa said, then she ducked out of the prison tower. She hadn't learned as much as she had hoped, but it was better than nothing. She at least had a better idea of the layout they were dealing with. She'd have to cut her losses and work with what she had. Kestrel asked, eyes wide. "I thought you'd be at the ball," Bok said, stepping inside and slipping his hat back on. "I went and you weren't there." "Yeah, my father was concerned about my safety," Kestrel admitted. "Besides, balls aren't really my thing." "But balls are amazing!" Bok gushed. "I mean, not that I've ever been to any myself, but the poetry of it all!" "Since when did you start writing about balls?" Kestrel teased. "I thought your thing was lamenting your lack of parents, or analyzing how cruel the world is." "Hey, you've turned me into a bit of a sap," Bok poked back. "So, what do you say? Want to get in on the action?" "I don't know," Kestrel hesitated. "Come on, I know a place that nobody knows about, we can still hear the music, and we can have our own little ball! Your father will never find out," Bok urged. "Oh, alright," Kestrel grinned. "Come on then!" Bok grinned, grabbing her by the hand and tearing her out the balcony doors. Bok took off the the sky, Kestrel trailing after him. She had little experience flying in the open air, so she struggled to keep up with the coatl. He slowed a little after noticing her trailing behind, still holding onto her hand. Kestrel grinned as she felt the wind brush over her scales. She had never felt so free. Eventually, he lead her to a little balcony outside an empty room not far from the ballroom. The music from the ball filled the air, and stars filled the sky. It was absolutely beautiful. Bok began setting up candles and decorations, building a special alcove for the two of them. "Do you want to dance?" Bok asked, holding out a hand. Breathlessly, Kestrel took it. "Why are you doing all this for me?" Kestrel asked. "Because you're something special, and you deserve to live your life how you want it, not how your father tells you to live it," Bok said. "What do you want, more than anything else in your life?" Right now, it's you. Kestrel pushed the thought away, feeling heat rise to her cheeks. She couldn't say that, it was ridiculous. "I don't know," she responded instead. "I just can't help but feel like my father is heading down a path that only leads to ruin. It don't want to be on it." "What do you mean by that?" Bok asked. Kestrel didn't know how to give voice to what went on in their training session, the darkness she saw in her father as he practiced his Shade magic, and the cold emptiness that filled her as she used hers. Part of the reason her father was so hard on her was because he was worried her Shade magic was too weak for her to defend herself, but it was quite the opposite. Kestrel felt stronger without it, when her natural shadow magic was able to flow freely, unhindered by the dark magic of the Shade that sought to devour it. "It's not important," Kestrel shook her head. "I just think he's making some bad choices. What do you want, more than anything in life?" She quickly changed the subject. "I want to make a living off of my poetry, but it seems no one really appreciates it the way that you do," Bok sighed. "It's the only thing I'm really good at, you know? I just feel so useless at everything else." "Someday, we'll find our place in this world," Kestrel sighed. "I'm sure of it. But in the meantime, let's enjoy tonight and the beautiful ball you've set up for us." "Yeah, okay," Bok seemed to perk up a little. The evening stretched on, the two dancing and laughing together, enjoying each other's company. Eventually, as the two tired of dancing, they found themselves resting on the edge of the balcony, Kestrel leaning her head against Bok's shoulder. They talked well into the night, listening to the music of the ball and enjoying the beauty of the night around them. With time, the two fell asleep, wrapped up in each other as if they were the only two dragons in the world. Kestrel awoke hours later to Bok swearing. She groggily blinked open her eyes, pushing herself off of the coatl's chest. "What is it?" She asked, looking up at the coatl. He was staring down at something, eyes wide in horror. "It's-" He stammered. "We-" Wordlessly, he shook his head, and pointed down at two softly glowing eggs. "Oh," Kestrel said. "My father's going to kill you." "Yeah, no duh!" Bok exclaimed, panicking. "I didn't think-" "What are we going to do?" Kestrel asked, beginning to panic as well. She wasn't ready to be a mother! She couldn't raise hatchlings! She hardly knew how to look out for herself! "I could take them to Thorburn," Bok suggested. "He could find homes for them, through the black market." "No," Kestrel shook her head. She couldn't doom their children to an unknown fate in the hands of dragons like the ones Bok had grown up with. "There has to be some other way." "Do you want to keep them?" Bok asked, clearly surprised. "Do you?" Kestrel challenged. "I don't know, this is all happening so fast," Bok exclaimed. He swore. "Okay, we'll deal. I like you a lot, Kestel, I just don't know if I'm ready for this kind of commitment. But I also know that I can't leave you to raise them on your own. But also, you can't leave the palace, and I can't stay long without your father finding out about me..." "Bok, calm down," Kestrel said. "It's okay, I've hidden things from my father before. I'll hide the eggs. You can drop in when you can, and we'll work it out from there, okay? Maybe you can scout out homes for them, in the city, in the meantime. There must be dragons who would be willing to take in hatchlings." "Yeah, that sounds like a good plan," Bok took a deep breath. "Kess, I'm sorry all this happened. This was supposed to be just a fun night together. I wasn't expecting anything like this." "We'll work it out," Kestrel reminded him. "We just need to be sure my father doesn't find out, or he's going to have a lot of questions I'm not ready to answer." ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @HauntedWhale @Disillusionist @AlchemyFox @Tirtouga678 @catmeow1 @Leopardmask @Midwinter @chantric @Dynami @ShinyDecidueye @tigressRising @REEEEEEEEEEEEEE @Stitched @Willnotgogently @Sabariel @MisterMylez @Skystrider @Starongie @icetail0912 @myriadofstars @Aetherstorm @Weredogalism @Nargeorgicorn @WeaverofLies @herobrinna @secretlylying @Azurepocalypse @GoldictheHedgefx @CobaltMoon @Tiffkaboo @Orodruin @SkullGeist @Violeteevee @Amaluna @DragonPrincess27 @Dakala @Drachenschwinge @Glassowary @GrinningWolf24 ----- This is the second ever time that I've gotten through a death streak with nobody dying! Day 128: Palace Secrets
Shadowscale Wing Guard Ambush

Using her untrained shadow magic, Clarissa concealed herself as she slunk along the edges of the palace corridors.

The others must have been placed hire or lower, to prevent any chance of escape.
dragon?did=58041310&skin=0&apparel=23028,13851,13795,13811,12267,13843,13859&xt=dressing.png

"Clarissa?" Dahlia croaked as she made her way to the bars of the cell, eyes wide. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to check on you all," Clarissa responded in a hushed voice. "See if there was anything I could do."

"Security is pretty tight here," Dahlia sighed. "I got one of the lower security cells, I'm young enough and far enough from the crown to not pose much of a threat. Everyone else is higher up, expect for Elixabete, who is lower down with Edna."

"Edna?" Clarissa tilted her head quizzically.

I don't know who she is anymore."

"Yeah, sometimes dragons really surprise you," Clarissa empathized. "It's hard to say what people's true colours are."

"And what are your true colours?" Dahlia asked. "Are you really going to help us? Or are you going to run away. I know you haven't always liked or trusted us."

"I can't promise anything," Clarissa admitted. "But I'll see what I can do. There's a group of us in the Knowledge District Wilds trying to find out ways to dethrone Jett, or at the very least, destroy the Shade in him. We have Edna's daughter with us, and Jett's son. They have some really good ins to how Jett functions. We just need to find the weak points."

Dahlia nodded, though Clarissa could see the mistrust in her eyes. "Be careful, Clarissa. Don't get tangled up with the wrong dragons. I don't want to see you get stabbed in the back."

"I'll do my best," The mirror vowed.

"You should go now, the guard should be making their round soon," Dahlia shivered again. "I'll be looking out for you."

"Thank you, you've given me some really helpful information," Clarissa said, then she ducked out of the prison tower. She hadn't learned as much as she had hoped, but it was better than nothing. She at least had a better idea of the layout they were dealing with. She'd have to cut her losses and work with what she had.

Kestrel was awoken from her impromptu nap by a tapping on her windowpane. She immediately fluttered towards the glass doors an opened them up to see Bok standing on the balcony, hat in his hands.

"Bok?" Kestrel asked, eyes wide.

"I thought you'd be at the ball," Bok said, stepping inside and slipping his hat back on. "I went and you weren't there."

"Yeah, my father was concerned about my safety," Kestrel admitted. "Besides, balls aren't really my thing."

"But balls are amazing!" Bok gushed. "I mean, not that I've ever been to any myself, but the poetry of it all!"

"Since when did you start writing about balls?" Kestrel teased. "I thought your thing was lamenting your lack of parents, or analyzing how cruel the world is."

"Hey, you've turned me into a bit of a sap," Bok poked back. "So, what do you say? Want to get in on the action?"

"I don't know," Kestrel hesitated.

@Petall *blinks* I remember opening Chapt. 127 yesterday, but it looks like I didn't read and comment? I must've closed the tab. Time to fix that~! Day 127 Wow! Now there's an energetic character if I ever saw one. I immediately thought, "Hey, those colors look familiar" and was surprised to see that he's Jett's and Seaberry's firstborn. Karma's in for a surprise! Hah! I like how Friehalt brushed Fallstar off -- it was pretty bold of her, and the fact that it was unexpected made it all the better. And wow, Friday and Friehalt are an excellent scheming pair. I'm actually looking forward to seeing how they interact with Scoril; poor girl's getting a bit messed up, thanks to her hugely conflicting feelings about Jett. I think this is the first time we've seen a "dead" dragon come back, and I like it! It opens up a lot more possibilities. Aaaaww, and there's Kass and Bohrium! I'm not sure if you've checked up on him recently, but I've added some headcanon to him, plus he's got an outfit plan. I'm looking forward to linking him with Dawnblood and Chess. ^^ Day 128 The conversation between Clarissa and Dahlia was really enlightening. I'm glad that here, we see Dahlia address Clarissa's own conflicted feelings. Clarissa's sort of a loose cannon, and given how many dragons we've seen sign over with Jett so far, it's kind of scary to consider how she might turn out later on.
"Since when did you start writing about balls?" Kestrel teased. "I thought your thing was lamenting your lack of parents, or analyzing how cruel the world is."
HAH! Bok's been yammering juuuust a bit too much, apparently. Also, I agree with Leopardmask -- that bit where Kestrel's thinking about the relationship between Shade and Shadow magic is so good. It hints at her own true nature versus Jett's, as well as what the Shade really does to those who give in to it. Congratulations on getting through the death streak! And new eggs! [emoji=coatl star] With such storied parents, I'm always excited to see nest results in this thread.

Yeah, Karma has no idea that she has a twin! It's going to be quite the shock for her!

Lol, I must admit I spent the evening before I wrote this watching Downton Abbey with my parents, and I'm pretty sure their way of doing subtle jabs leaked into Friehalt and Fallstar's interaction. It was very fun!

He looks great!!! I love what you've done with him, and the clothing plans you have for him!!! I can't wait to see him when he's done!

Yeah! It was great to be able to bring Dahlia in too! I haven't had much of an opportunity to write her yet!

Thank you!!! I am very excited! Bok and Kestrel have some very pretty offspring possibilities!

@Petall Derpy dragons are fun! X3 If you're looking into doing commissions, you may also want to consider downloading a scanner app on your phone to make the images clearer and sharper. (I use the same process for my own art -- take a picture, then use the scanner app to clean it up.) Funnily enough, this drawing of Accident does look like it could be from OTGW. xD I like how the coloring breaks through the lines, and the googly eyes are cute. Good luck with your final paper and the rest of the school year! [emoji=guardian laughing] Your plans for the upcoming Pinkerlockes are really interesting too. Do you have any thoughts yet on what your next Flight will be?
@Petall Derpy dragons are fun! X3 If you're looking into doing commissions, you may also want to consider downloading a scanner app on your phone to make the images clearer and sharper. (I use the same process for my own art -- take a picture, then use the scanner app to clean it up.)

Funnily enough, this drawing of Accident does look like it could be from OTGW. xD I like how the coloring breaks through the lines, and the googly eyes are cute.

He does kind of look like one, doesn't he?

@Disillusionist

Oh yeah, I'd definitely use that for commissions! I just don't have the patience to go through all those steps for my own art.

Thank you! I guess the googly eyes especially are matching with the OTGW style!

Thank you! I have a lot of plans in mind for different flights, but for my next one I've settled on arcane! I'm pretty excited!
