Tuesday - Glossed in Translation
"Bravo! Bravo!"
The speech from the event runners had barely finished before a familiar voice floated in from the tent entrance. The first word in common draconic, the second what sounded like coatl.
The two clan judges looked over to see HoneyMead, the clan's resident naturalist and Nature flight envoy. His fireflies danced excitedly about him as he entered, crest fluttering.
"I assume this is where our challenge begins?"
___ | "Hi, Honey!" |
A big grin spread across Diego's face while a small smile crinkled the edges of Jwaila's grizzly visage. Few could resist his innocent and genuine charm.
Day 3 wrote:
Use at least THREE of the following ingredients in your entry:
Redtail Crane / Petite Glasswing Butterfly / Killifish / Stonewatch Scrub
___ | "...So I have to use at least three of these ingredients to make a dish?" |
_____________ | "Pretty much. That plus anything else you feel like using that you find around the kitchen." | _____ |
The verdant coatl fidgeted as he poured over the ingredients.
___ | "Oh! Petite Glasswings! It's a shame they're already dead. A flutter of this many of them would make the prettiest noise..." |
He grabbed them almost on instinct, handling them and their delicate wings with care as he brought them over to the cooking counter. He returned to the table, and after some deliberation, grabbed the Stonewatch Scrub and Killifish. He licked his lips as he gazed at the colorful array of seafood in front of him and decided to give them the ceviche treatment. He searched through the kitchen until he found a suitable sour component for the fish: Aether Cherries
He chuckled to himself, considering this was the anniversary of Aethers arriving on Sornieth. He juiced the cherries before moving on to the fish themselves. As he got out the knife to properly cut them, Jwaila jumped from her post and steadied his hands, guiding him through the fileting process. Not every dragon was naturally skilled with sharp objects, and a clanmate wasn't about to get hurt on her watch.
With the fish taken care of and marinating, he turned his attention to the Stonewatch Scrub. He observed the texture of the leaves and made sure to tear off any sharp bits he encountered. He then chopped up the leaves using the knife techniques Jwaila taught him earlier and put the result into a bowl with some Dusky Apples he found, dicing those as well.
___ | "Blue and blue!" |
He then tossed the prepared Killifish into the salad before looking at his insect ingredient. Bugs were naturally crunchy, sure, but he wanted them to be extra crispy. So into the oven they went to dry out a bit more, but not too hot so that the wings would curl or catch fire. Then out of the oven an onto the salad, giving a stained glass look to an already colorful dish.
___ | "I uhh, apologize if it didn't turn out well. My diet is rather limited so I hope the plant and insect ingredients are to your liking." |
Jwaila waived him away as if to dismiss his concerns while Diego waved over Meringue to help taste the fish. The tang of the aether cherries on the sweet apples and scrub leaves were crisp and refreshing, and Jwaila nodded as she found the butterflies crisp to perfection.
___ | "Still no meat, but very good use of the oven. Not too shabby." |
___ | "This is delicious! I'd give it a solid 8/10!" |
To explain the title, a "gloss" is a term in linguistics for a list of terms in one language listed next to a corresponding list of terms in another language with the same or similar definition. HoneyMead is my little polyglot, finding a way to even communicate with fae, considering he learned from his nature flight guru who was also a fae.
