As a home chef, Millie wasn't quite sure she was up to the challenge of intricate effects, but she would certainly try! The crane didn't feel like it would fit in well with something sweet, but that plumage was inspiring. Perhaps she could make something that looked like a redtail crane which looks like a gryphon. It was a little convoluted, but it seemed as good of an idea as any. She plucked the brilliant red flight feathers as she thought through the rest. A good base would be needed, something versatile that could have a lot in it and be shaped. A cake perhaps? With deep blue stonewatch icing and fishy confetti bits! The feathers could be inserted as a non-edible garnish and decoration to make it look like the crane. Almost moving automatically she began whipping together a basic cake base with ingredients from the pantry. She had made fish cakes plenty of times for her mate's birthdays, as well as your treat herself whenever. The trick was to balance the fishy flavour with the sweetness. And of course, she would want to preserve the bright colours of the killifish. She chopped them up whole and stirred them into the mix until there was a satisfying ratio of rainbow bits in the batter. Getting a few round pans of cake in the oven, she turned her focus to the icing. She pureed the succulents’ flesh, getting a vibrant blue jelly of sorts. Mixing that with icing sugar and butter made it a bit lighter, so she added some darker food coloring to get it closer to the dark plumage of the crane. She licked some off a tasting spoon then stuck out her tongue at the reflection. The colour was perfect! Cakes baked, she let them cool then began to carve them up. She went for a flat look, not confident in something so vertical as a real crane. She arranged a rounded body on a large board, then laid out widespread wings. Finally, she used the sliced up bits mixed with icing to shape out a serpentine neck and small head. She stuck the cleaned up flight feathers into the tail end and along the edges of the wings, trying to make it look natural. Then came out the piping bag and her dark blue icing. She used a wide nozzle and used small strokes to give it the appearance of short feathers. She stared at her creation, uncertain. It would probably taste good, and it was clearly full of effort. She thought it looked a little goofy pasted so flat like that. Her eyes ran along it critically, then drifted to the side where a perfect little basket of something- the butterflies! She had completely forgotten! In a rush she began to pluck wings from the bugs. Her mind and hands raced side by side. What was she going to do? The wings were so pretty, and whenever two rubbed they made a lovely little chime. Her critical eye once again scanned her cake; where could the wings fit in? Maybe on the wings? She wished she had a steadier hand as she grabbed a new piping bag with a narrow nozzle and ran it along the bottoms of the feathers at a quite awkward angle. Then she used tweezers to take the plucked wings and place them with one edge buried in the icing, ideally overlapping just a little. She wasn't sure how well they would stay, and if they would make their music. With nothing more to be done, she lifted the board and walked towards the judges. To her delight, as she picked up speed the butterfly wings waved in the air and began to sing softly. The small sound accompanied her all the way up to the table, though she couldn't be sure the other dragons had heard it. “I uh, made a gryphon cake- well a crane cake. I took inspiration from the bird ingredient and used its cleaned feathers as garnish. Along their underside you should find some icing and the butterfly wings. They make a lovely sound if you wave the feather through the air gently. And uh, the cake itself is vanilla with killifish confetti and stonewatch scrub icing. It has quite the effect,” she said with a laugh and stuck out her still blue tongue.

Day 3
Special effects? Millie could hardly wait through the whole translation to find out what the secret ingredients were. Upon the reveal she knew she had a lot thinking to do.
Redtail cranes, known for their mimicry of the fearsome gryphons. The feathers were so flashy.
Petite glasswing butterflies. Picking up the container, the rustling of the wings was almost musical. It would take a lot of finesse to keep them intact.
Multicolored Killifish were beautiful as a garnish and also quite tasty.
Stonewatch scrub. Its vibrant insides dyed dragons mouths bright blue.

Meringue had talked about pastry, so perhaps another sweet was in order.
^While the puff pastry rested in the fridge, he cleaned and seasoned both crane and fish. Then, he crushed a handful of scrubs with a knife in order to let the crane meat absorb the vibrant blue dye. After taking a break, he took the dough out of the fridge and cut it into four rectangular parts that he put in the oven. Next, he placed the fishes and the piece of meat on a grill. Leonidas carefully started a fire. He was fond of well grilled food, but for this recipe the ingredients needed to retain most of their color. When everything was cooked, he assembled it in layers separated by the fine puff pastry. The meat was placed at the bottom and several fishes of different colors were lined up on the other two layers. His savory millefeuille looked like a colorful pastry with the blue dyed meat and all these vibrant fishes. Leonidas delicately added a few stonewatch scrub leaves on the top, arranging them to form a pair of spread wings. He nodded, pleased with the result.

Redtail Crane Killifish Stonewatch Scrub

Just how did chefs deal with these on a daily basis? He wondered while recovering the flying fish. He needed to prepare the dough first, but kept a careful eye on the potentially rebellious ingredients.

In a big bowl, he poured flour, shredded butter and water. Leonidas patiently kneaded the mixture until it became smooth enough. He took a rolling pin to spread the dough and meticulously folded it several times.

Eis can handle that.

They already have a concept in mind, something Mochi should like.

Iced tea with edible glitter and a nice hot snack.
