Welcome!

This is the Study of the Dragon Heights
a.k.a. How Big the Dragons Really Are!

So, the fact that the site statistics only give you the length of the dragon has always bothered me. It is the easiest way to list the dragons sizes statistically, but doesn’t really tell much about the creatures size. Since I am a nerd with nothing better to do decided to find out the actual sizes of the dragon breeds, and have been working with it last 3 days.

Assuming that the lengths listed on dragon profiles are from snout to tail, I have been trying to figure out how big each breed is, measured on top of the head and on the withers (like horses heights are measured). After finding out how the sprites bodies are proprotioned I could also count how many percents the sprite images heights are of the dragons length. That allows me to rezise the sprites in scale, what makes visual in-scale comparison of the dragons possible.

Please keep in mind that English is not my first language so there’s probably some spelling and grammar mistakes, I hope they are not too distracting. Also, I am 10 hours ahead of the server time so I am usually not around from 15 server time to rollover.

All the measurements are rounded approximations that I did for my own fun, so they are not overly accurate but I thought I’d share them anyway :D You can use my research as a reference any way you like, but please don’t claim it or my edits to be yours!

If you did found my study useful and you have extra food items, any food donations are highly appreciated! I haven’t been able to grind coliseum for a while and I am struggling to keep my dragons fed haha

Visual Comparisons

click the image for full size! (its really big)

Here are the dragons in their actual sizes comparing to each other. I used about average lenghts of each breed and resized the image according to the data I collected in my study.

Body lenghts: Coatl 8m // Guardian 15m // Spiral 4m // Fae 1m // Pearlcatcher 6m // Imperial 25m // Skydancer 5m // Tundra 4m // Bogsneak 6m // Nocturne 5m // Snapper 5m // Wildclaw 5m // Ridgeback 17m // Mirror 6m

For a human scale The Snapper and The Wildclaws heads shoud be at approximately 2 metres that translates to 6 ’ 7 “ or so.

Visual scales

click the image for full size! (its really big)

I did some more scales of the small and mid sized breeds just to show how much variability there is inside and between breeds. For example mirrors have really different body lenghts, I myself own a mirror little short of 4 meters but also one way over 7 meters.

I am going to do scales of the bigger breeds too, I just have to think about the best way to do them.

How can I compare my own dragons in scale?

I measured how many percents each of the breeds sprite height is of their body lenght. This multiplier can be used for resizing the sprites in scale to their respective sizes. So far it can be only used in the sprites I used in my study, but I am working my way to provide all sprites multipliers!

My English skills are kinda struggling with the mathematic language but I hope you can keep up!

List of the sprites with their multipliers:

Fae male: 0.56
Mirror female: 0.5 / Mirror male: 0.41
Tundra female: 0.56 / Tundra male 0.56
Guardian female: 0.4

Spiral female: 0.2
Pc male: 0.52
Snapper female: 0.66
Ridgeback male: 0.53

Skydancer male: 0.38
Bogsneak male: 0.44 / Bogsneak female: 0.46

Nocturne male: 0.5
Imperial male: 0.38
Wildclaw female: 0.5
Coatl female: 0.4 / Coatl male: 0.48

I multiplied the dragons lenght with the breeds multiplier and resized the images pixels according to the value to two decimals. This way the picture will have scale of 1px=1cm.

Examples:

Nocturne male, lenght 5M
5 * 0.5 = 2.5 = 250px

Tundra female, lenght 4M
4 * 0.56 = 2,25 = 225px

Imperial male, lenght 28M
28 * 0.38 = 10,64 = 1064px

I can’t/don’t want to/don’t have time for that, can you do chart of my dragons?

Sure, if you pay. I don’t really know if there is a market for these since the math is up there and I am doing these with MS Paint so the quality isn’t too great. If I do get chart commissions how ever I will only take 3 at the time. If you want to commission a chart please ask first and wait for me to confirm your order.

Chart Prices:
With 3 dragons: 30kT
With 4 dragons: 40kT
With 5 dragons: 50kT
WIth 6 dragons: 60kT

Faes are basically the size of a small cat, with just super long tail and some wings. I am not quite sure of this one, since I really have no idea how they would stand. This calculation has been done assuming that they would be on all fours like most of the breeds. For all we know Faes could also be bipedal, so this is just guessing. The reason why mirrors are so tiny on my visual comparisons picture is that 62% of their body length is tail. This means that the average 6M (~19'8’’) long mirrors body would be only 2,28M (~7'6’’) long. I don’t know if this is intended from the staff, but for me the idea of small mirrors is quite intriguing. It really puts emphasis to their pack behavior and “power in numbers” thing.

With flying twirly noodles its not that easy, but I am going to assume they stand like Imperials, since they too have long serpentine body. Over half of the lenght of the Spirals bodies is tail, which makes them so much smaller that I have thought. They’re literally just snakes with some wings and legs added. I tried the formula with Jun, he is 3,66 meters (~12'0'') long spiral and he would have about the same height on withers than my Chinese Crested dog who I could carry around in a hand bag. There is also the question of how long nocturnes really are since the bug has left some breedchanged nocturnes to baby sizes. Most of the 12 nocturnes in my lair are 5 or so meters long, but there is one I breedchanged recently who is an adult but just little over a meter long (same size as faes). That with the fact that the breed seems to be based on bats has caused the common thought that they are around same size that faes are.
