On fae hatchlings with wasp it's the best thing ever.

It's an extremely situational gene with a confusing placement and questionable clunky design that's really great for some things, but is a lot like Okapi including having almost all the same design flaws as Okapi (incidentally that makes okapi good to breed with it if you want to make a pair). To successfully breed anything good with it you need to make very specific, highly controlled tight-range pairs, and that's not something most people are willing to pour time and money into when the resulting hatchlings are doomed to never sell because a majority of players consider scales outright worthless no matter what anyway.
It doesn't help that, since scales is such an unpopular gene, nobody bothers breeding the color combos that would work well in it, which makes creating good scales dragons to breed in the first place next to impossible.
Personally i've got a few scalebois in the works, some long-running AH searches for dragons to be given scales (unfortunately i've been camping on most of them for more than a year without a single dragon within 4 colors in any direction being born) a scales/okapi pair, and if negotiations work out hopefully a scales based pair themed around the sturgeon and gulper familiars, but i fully expect their offspring to be relegated permanently to the fodder pit.
