I have a weird goal to make use of every gene in some way. This one you can't really tell he has it but it was oddly the option I liked most.

Personally, I think Scales is like Okapi. It's a cool idea, and I want to use it, but rarely do I actually see a use of it that I like. For Scales, it's mainly the weird facial markings. For Okapi, it just seems too bold on a lot of breeds; more like someone took a marker to the dragon, than fading nicely into the body. The colors usually have to be really close to look right.
Edit: You've made me realize that I don't think any of the dragons I plan to keep have Scales. Not even the 'maybe keep around for a bit' fodder.

I put Scales on this guy because I wanted him to have a muddy swampy snoot.
It's VERY situational for me.

Scales is such a situational gene, even more than other situational genes like Ringlets, Okapi, and Contour. I have seen a few that manage to pull it off, but even then, it's only a few.

Having almost nothing but Gen1s doesn't help with having a hard time finding dragons that work it haha
I love it personally, but I don't use it often because usually something else works better (and is easier to obtain)

I love Scales when paired with Wasp, and I have a few breeding and G1 projects with those genes.
I think my main issue with Scales is that many genes/colors add a pretty fading effect to the feet and Scales covers it up

I’m not a huge fan tbh. However I’m going to need it for whenever my WC’s give me what I need, ironically. It’s the only tert that works for what I’m going for.
