Is magic innate? a skill studied? are there schools of magic? spells with incredibly specific effects a la DND? How much does flight play into magic? can magic be overused? is there ambient magic??

Although my lore is not that traditional (I don't really have flesh and blood dragons, but more like embodiments of several items/events/beings/etc.), I kinda see the magic of FR as a type of energy a dragon is born with. A dragon born in Nature has the energy of Nature throughout their whole body, flowing through them like the blood in their veins. Just like any other skill, magic capabilities have to be learned.

I guess you can compare it to a muscle, if you like. The more you use it, the stronger it can get. If you don't use it, it won't get stronger/will weaken. Overuse it, and you'll hurt yourself.

That's my take on it~

Most of my clan fuctions on magic, but there are so many different kinds. There are element-specific kinds and then there's stuff like potions and healing magic

Anyone can learn it in theory, but certain individuals might have a gift for it and others absolutely not, so they don't persue it

There are a few masters in my clan and they all have apprentices. There are also many individuals who are too cool for school don't feel the need to perfect their skills, so they just mess around with it

Roxy is your typical Arcane mage and is studying under Celestis, who specialises in potions, since there are no masters of Arcane magic around. She's planning a trip to the Observatory to study there

For me, all dragons have the innate ability to use magic but some are more naturally gifted at it than others. There are some who aren't naturally gifted but study and practice to become very good in time. Magic plays into everyday clan life but there are lots of dragons who also build things by hand and do things the old fashion way.

Most of my dragons (aside from snappers and bogsneaks) don't use magic to fly unless they are racing. It's a different story if they're racing...

In my headcannon, magic can be overused, sort of. It depends on the kind of magic and if they use too big a spell or too much magic at once they can pass out from exhaustion. They can't really die from using too much magic though (since the gods technically made dragonkind from magic) but there are spells where the side effects are death if they do them wrong. But that's the spell's effect not the dragon using too much magic. Its complicated.

Yeah there's ambient magic. Every flight territory land is infused with the reigning god's magic. That's site lore and I just go along with that idea.

My headcannons and magic systems are as follows.

1. Every dragon can do breath magic i.e. Coli attacks unless they are completely cut off from magic.

2. Some other magic abilities such as breathing underwater for a water dragon are innate or passive. Others such as hydrokinesis or prophecy require more study to do effectively.

4. Non breath magic is similar to the system used in Tamora Pierces Circle of Magic series, probably because I liked how magic worked in that series. (That explains my earth charm mage and his way of doing magic at any rate.)

5. Any dragon can use there elemental magic anywhere in Sornith but it's harder to use outside their native flight. Magic is ambient and drawn from the key lines.

Pretty much a mix from what I've inferred from official lore and "I want it to work this way because I like it when it works this way."

i've never really established magic thoroughly in my lore, and i think i'm gonna hold off on it along with my dragon lore until the new ancient breeds come out. then i'll work from there.

for my dragons, it's a combination. magic is a skill they're all born with, but with varying amounts (Primals are regarded to be literally blessed by their deity, so they're about the highest you can go in terms of birth power). however they must learn how to use and control it, and for dragons born with very little they can train themselves to have more and use more

typically, while temperate amounts of magic is used in everyday Clan life for my Clan, only a few can be truly magically adept, these being the leader and their protegés

Mine is basically:
Magic can be basic or complex, and not bound to just flight.
It's easier for a plague dragon to use plague magic, but they could learn fire if they put effort into it, though they'd need a source since they can't produce it naturally.
They could also learn other types, but two is already hard, let alone three

My approach to dragons isn't as magical as most. Traits inherent to element are biological and not magical. Plague dragons have better immune systems, Fire dragons' flesh is flame retardant, Water dragons have gills, etc. While these traits in and of themselves aren't magical, the elemental energy around the egg determines the element and therefore the traits.

These energies are everywhere and dragons who care to learn can detect and manipulate them. Learning to utilize surrounding energy is simple and most dragons find it doesn't take much effort. What does take effort is learning to harness the energy in such a way that it can be converted. Dragons who aren't very skilled won't be able to use magic when outside of their elemental territory. Those who are learned or skilled enough can use magic regardless of location. Being able to generate energy when somewhere cut off from the elemental energies or being able to harness additional elements is difficult and rare as an inherent skill, but not unheard of.

It's also not unheard of from some dragons to be incapable of sensing or harnessing these energies at all. Or have such a hard time that in all practicality can't. I have a few dragons who are like this.

Dragons with Primal eyes are naturally incredibly skilled with their element, but incapable of learning others. However, their power with their own element exceeds what most dragons are capable of.

Dragons have innate elemental magic, and can have (barring extremely rare circumstances) one element only. The way each particular dragon wields/uses that elemental control is different, and they can develop new skills and techniques if they try. Some dragons are more powerful magically than others, but magical ability can be strengthen through training.

Non-dragons (i.e. beastclans) can't use elemental magic and instead use chaos magic. Chaos magic is very random and unpredictable, but anyone (except dragons) can learn it. Once you can control reasonably well, it is extremely powerful and far more versatile then elemental magic, but takes decades of practice to get that good.

There's also alchemy and enchanting, which are more like magical sciences with (kinda) fixed effects that both dragons and beastclans can do.
