You wander through a pleasant green forest on the border of the Ashfall Waste. Somewhere beyond the trees, the Sea of a Thousand Currents churns. A smile graces your face at the thought of visiting the beach soon, but first...

A little building came into view. It stood on the edge of the pebble-lined path that led you here, looking as peaceful and innocent as could be. 'Perfect,' you think. The sky above the trees was already turning dark; you'd managed to reach the little tea house just in time to spend the night.

You take another step towards the building when, suddenly, movement on your left catches your eye. You leap to the side as the raptor-like head of a Wildclaw emerges from the brush, but you quickly notice something is off.

It was... made of wood?

57432286_350.png

You hardly have a second to think when the Wildclaw leaps out from the foliage, revealing its full form. It was large, larger than the average Wildclaw, but it wasn't normal. Its skin was bark. Its wings were leaves. And... there appeared to be lemons growing on it?

'What is THAT?' you wonder as the Wildclaw tree slowly plods onto the path. It stands before you, root-like feet digging into the earth, blocking the path to the tea house ahead.

You stammer out a stunned, albeit polite, attempt at a greeting... only for the Wildclaw tree to suddenly fling the most enormous lemon you've ever seen in your direction. You manage to dodge the incoming fruit, watching in shocked silence as it lands with a loud splat, promptly bursting and soaking everything within a few feet with juice.

You quickly turn your attention back to the tree, thinking that it seemed frustrated. However, your thoughts are suddenly cut short when the tree lunges towards you. You flee on foot, the trees too thick for you to take off.

You didn't need to look back to know that the Wildclaw is chasing you...

You stopped. The thuds from your pursuer faded away several minutes ago, but you simply continued to run until you reached the forest edge just in case.

'What WAS that?!' you think, panting slightly.

"Greetings, traveler!" a voice calls from the distance. You turn towards the sound, meeting the gaze of a strange Tundra.

"You appear quite frazzled, is something the matter?" the Tundra asked.

You hesitate, wondering if you'll be seen as insane if you tell the truth. The silence drags on as you try to formulate a response, but the Tundra cuts you off.

Kaimana is a water primal G1 that someone gifted to Madrigalism. She didn't look very good, so Madri scattered her a few times.

Then...

On May 25th, 2020, she scattered into XYX Lemon/Lead/Lemon. Now normally, one would celebrate when a G1 scatters into a double.

Not this time.

Lemon is literally Madri's least favorite color on FR. Ever.

So Madri gets this dragon and, in classic Fire Flight Discord fashion, this becomes a meme. And then lore. And then the story you see here.

Soon after the Scattering of Kaimana, Madri creates the famed Lemon Is Awful rant, cementing her place as the resident lemon (the color) hater.

And then... and then... I decided to make a G1 pair. Why? Because why not. Actually it was for the lore since the original trees didn't have parents and were simply the result of some silly kids messing around.

And that, long story short, is how I, DG, ended up needing about 5.5kg/mt to create a G1 Wildclaw pair to breed the trees.

Then I decided I to make Christmas the deadline. For time references, the Lemon Tree idea started on November 4th, 2020. I decided to make them G1s on December 2nd, 2020. So I had less than a month to get them breed changed and gened lol.

I made it somehow, mostly thanks to FvL.

So here we are now.

Okay so

After I wrote this, Kijauni came into my discord DMs screaming something about urgently needing to borrow lair space.

Why?

Well they got this as a gift for Madri.

Meet Menace.

SO

Here we are now.

OKAY SO

I'm back editing this post again.

Because LaughingIdiot gave me this:

66163902_350.png

My first ever G1 double. It's LEMON.

I love it XD

Also I decided to make the Snappers. This is what a page in my lair looked like after I made that choice:

LaiT2jN.png

I'm nowhere near there. Also there's two more in my lair cause they have den cooldown. Also also, see those basic ones? Yep. Those are G1s. Near XXYs too (ty for cheap near misses NotN!)

SO ANYWAY

HERE WE ARE NOW

Due to having a lot of projects and limited lair space, I've decided not to do the Snappers. I tried, however, and actually got a... grapefruit?

Huh.

Anyway, here we are now!

Candrima hands you another cup of milk to help. Eventually, the spice fades enough that you are able to speak. You take the chance to ask why it was like that. Philemon simply shrugs. "No one knows why the lemons are so spicy, especially from that particular tree. The other tree's fruit also has a spicy kick, but nowhere near as strong. It'd be like... like... comparing a jalapeno to reaper. Yes, it's quite a drastic difference. "Some are doing research, however. Perhaps in time, there will be an answer to your question. You continue to struggle with the spice for several minutes, unable to speak much if at all.

Now, shall I continue?"

"Not long after the creation of the first tree, Bane met Buckthorne."

"The children quickly became the best of friends and, together, made the second Lemon Tree. Perhaps that's why the second one is less... volatile. Bane had more practice and Buckthorne is actually a nature dragon.

"We haven't yet figured out how the trees work. They seem to be a mix of plant and dragon, yet are unable to speak. They don't exhibit any magical skills aside from, arguably, the lemons themselves. However, they can apparently breed like dragons."

You stare at Philemon in shock, wondering how that was possible.

"I don't know how, but they did it. Three eggs. Or... seeds? I'm not quite sure what to call them. We don't really know how they were made, only that the trees became fiercely protective of a secluded bit of forest for a little while.
Behavior: XS/Bonsai tend to be the friendliest and most social, often congregating in groups of varying sizes. It is unknown what caused the spontaneous growth of moss-like fur on these trees, but the result is a variant that thrives even in the Southern Icefield. These trees produce fruit similar in flavor to those produced by Originals. Oddly enough, the fruits never fully freeze no matter the temperature and, when fresh from the tree, produce a warm juice that can be used to rejuvenate nearly anything suffering from hypothermia. Furthermore, the mossy fur can be used to make warm clothing or even cooked and eaten. It has a bit of a lemony scent and taste no matter how it is prepared.
Behavior: Heims are the most mellow of the trees, but also the least loyal. They often like to flock together with their own kind, huddling like penguins in the winter and herding like sheep or goats in the summer. Due to their relatively docile nature, they are the ideal trees for young hatchlings; even the Heims var. Conditus tend to behave more like the Rosea variant of the other LemonTree species, and they aren't even aggressive when breeding. Wearing clothing made with Heims moss can help gain the trust of one of these trees more quickly... but don't wear an Heims moss sweater around an Original or XL - they'll likely attack. Avon trees can also produce their fruit 2-3 times a year depending on how well they've been taken care of. Avons prefer to be around other trees and will noticeably wilt if kept alone. Species Name:
Citrea Arbordraco (Lemon Treedragon)

A group of strange creatures somewhere between a tree and a Wildclaw. All trees produce lemons, but not all lemons are equal.

NOTE: New mutations have been observed. Some trees are growing larger while others are growing smaller, appearing to take the form of Imperial and Veilspun dragons. Some have also grown a mossy coat to cope with winters, similar to Tundras. More research needed.

Fruit Variations:
Please note these variations apply to general lore only! They have all of the same genes.
  • Citrea Arbordraco var. acerbdulcis (Lemon Treedragon var. soursweet)
    • Behavior: Acerbdulcis individuals can be very unpredictable. The trees alternate between being incredibly sweet and pleasant to handle to being incredibly moody and sour. This occurs inversely to the fruit growth; trees with fruit still in the sour stage exhibit a very friendly personality while those in the sweetening and honey stage exhibit a colder, more distant personality.
  • Citrea Arbordraco var. conditus (Lemon Treedragon var. spicy)
    • Behavior: Conditus are hotheaded. These trees will charge at anything that moves that they don't know, no matter how large it may be. Spicy lemon trees are the most difficult to tame but are also among the most loyal to those that manage to befriend them. However, these trees are also the most vengeful. They will not forget any transgressions.
  • Citrea Arbordraco var. rosea (Lemon Treedragon var. pink)
    • Behavior: Rosea are the easiest trees to handle by far. Incredibly calm and easy to train at almost all times except breeding, they are the recommended beginner tree for new tree owners.
  • Sanguis Phase (Blood Phase)
    • Behavior: Sanguis phase individuals are incredibly rare and, in fact, are not an official variant. Significant enough to warrant mention, any Lemon Tree can enter sanguis phase for a short time. The cause of this change is unknown, but is marked by a shift in the color of the fruit's flesh and a change in flavor.
Size and Type Variations:
  • Citrea Arbordraco Original (Wildclaws)
    • The original trees. Though the origin of the other mutations is unknown, many theorize that all of the new variations somehow evolved from the original pair.
    • Behavior: Originals are the most unpredictable and the most influenced by their fruit variation. Most of their behavior depends on the fruit variant as well as how others treat the tree. They tend to live alone, in pairs, or, on occasion, small groups. Though some will tolerate the presence of other Lemon Tree variants, many appear to prefer the company of other Originals and may get aggressive if another variant draws too near. Some Originals can also be rather territorial, flinging lemons at unknown dragons who come near their home.
  • Citrea Arbordraco XL (Imperials)
    • The first size variant discovered, these trees grow to massive sizes. Their fruit often reflects this; they produce the largest lemons on record. However, due to the sheer size, the lemons produced by XL individuals take far longer to grow and often have a milder flavor than fruit produced by the Originals and XS/Bonsai.
    • Behavior: XL are the most standoffish and territorial of the size variants, as well as the least affected by their fruit variant. Typically rather calm, most prefer to simply lay in one place and slumber for weeks on end, only moving if threatened or if their resting place no longer suits their needs. The least tolerant of any other variant, most XL prefer to live alone or with their selected mate. One of the few things that can awaken and enrage an XL is the presence of another Lemon Tree. Strangely, they do not seem to mind dragons and other animals approaching them and living in their territory, usually regarding them with a cold indifference.
  • Citrea Arbordraco XS/Bonsai (Veilspuns)
    • A recent variation, these small trees resemble bonsai. They often like living around larger Lemon Trees - often to the dismay of said trees - and produce their own fruit. Compared to other Lemon Tree lemons, those produced by XS/Bonsai are small, with the largest growing to normal lemon size. However, the fruit still packs a flavorful punch.
    • Behavior: XS/Bonsai tend to be the friendliest and most social, often congregating in groups of varying sizes. They appear to enjoy the presence of other Lemon Tree variants, often attempting to perch on the larger trees with varying levels of success. Easy to maintain, these trees may tolerate being kept indoors as long as they have access to light, water, and anything else they might need.
  • Citrea Arbordraco Heims (Tundras)
    • The most recent variation, first observed during a particularly chilly winter.
    • Behavior: Heims are the most mellow of the trees, but also the least loyal. They often like to flock together with their own kind, huddling like penguins in the winter and herding like sheep or goats in the summer. Although somewhat more skittish, they are also rather curious and will carefully approach anything and everything... usually as a group.
  • Citrea Arbordraco Avon (Skydancers; by @Jaxtheguardian)
    • A new variant of Lemon trees recently discovered by Aine. M/Avon Lemon trees, also referred to as Avaloons, produce larger lemons then most and are found normally when temperatures start to rise. With Avons being the largest other than the XL variant, their lemons are normally used for juicing as well as extracting the oil within. Avon trees can also produce their fruit 2-3 times a year depending on how well they've been taken care of. Avons prefer to be around other trees and will noticeably wilt if kept alone. This variant of Lemon tree is suited for either beginning growers or those who have a large Orchard already.
    • Behavior: Avons are chatty and prefer the company of multiple trees. This can be any variant as Avons are just social trees. An Orchard keeper could find their Avons actually singing with trills and chirps since they can't form actual speech. Most compare Avons to birds due to this trait. Avons aren't picky with their mates and can normally be found with them. Unlike the Originals and XL, Avons would prefer flight over fighting. Most who have defensive trees have found that the Avon variant is better for scouting due to their playful nature. Because of this, most have found that unlike the Heim variant, Avon leaves are best used for camouflage, though they don't produce as much in the winter.

For LemonTrees trained to Level 25:
  • WARNING: Some trees, even Roseas and Heims, go through a phase of aggression. Time spent in this phase varies for each individual, lasting from a day to several months. At this time, trees act almost as aggressive as they do when breeding, often disappearing for hours or days at a time. Researchers are unsure of what the trees do during this time, but many notice a small decline in wildlife populations as well as an increase in attacks on other dragons. Furthermore, this behavior correlates with the growth of blood lemons on the trees.

Able to walk around unlike other plants, they are fully capable of watering themselves and seeking out areas with better soil.

Feeding: It is unknown if the Lemon Trees eat anything; not one has been observed consuming food, but odd bite marks have been noticed on plants and even animals in areas where a Lemon Tree is known to live. However, attempts to feed the trees always fail and attempts to collect a bite impressions lead to the incredibly upset trees flinging lemons at the researchers.
Watering: Lemon Trees are capable of finding enough water for themselves, but if you wish to keep them close by, it is best to provide a water source. It is unknown if the Lemon Trees drink or absorb water through roots, though it appears to be the latter as simple water troughs do not seem to satisfy them. Those wanting to own a Lemon Tree should consider if there are any nearby lakes, ponds, or rivers for the tree to use; if there are none, they will have to find a way to provide water to the tree or it will leave.

Note: The trees seem to greatly enjoy rain. Giving yours a quick sprinkling every now and then will likely help you gain the tree's affection.

Housing: They're trees. Sapient trees. Have you ever tried getting a tree to go inside a building or shelter? Besides, they really like rain, so unless you're getting a hurricane or something you shouldn't be forcing them to go inside.

XS/Bonsai and Heims variants may be exceptions. XS/Bonsai may tolerate the indoors if provided with everything they need, though most still prefer the outdoors. Heims should be kept indoors or have their fur trimmed if the temperature outside exceeds that which the tree can safely handle. One can tell if a Heims tree is overheating as it will usually look wilted and lethargic. Showering it with cool water is another alternative if the tree cannot immediately be brought into a cooler environment.

Training: Somehow, the trees can be trained. This suggests intelligence and memory. Training is best accomplished through rewards, but since the trees so far won't eat treats, trainers must get creative with their rewards. As previously mentioned, the trees like being strinkled with water and some even appear to like being petted. A tree can even be trained to take a rider or to carry or pull weight, but adequate precautions and equipment must be used to avoid injuring the tree. If the tree gets injured doing a task, it will likely refuse to do the task again.

Reward-based training is highly suggested. Though the trees can clearly feel discomfort and pain, aversive training methods are not recommended for several reasons: the tree will likely hate you forever, fight back, leave, or all of the above.

Fertilizing: Some researchers have attempted to use fertilizer to enrich the soil for the trees. This does not always work as some of the trees avoid the fertilized area. Perhaps they don't like it?

Note: If the soil quality in an area isn't good enough, the trees might leave the area. This makes trees that don't like fertilizer more difficult to care for, but as long as you live in a fertile area with enough water, even those will stick around.

Fruit Alterations: Over time, the Lemon Trees seem to have adapted and branched off into several variations. Some, such as the pink lemon trees, are thought to have formed after farmers exposed some trees to different fertilizers for extended amounts of time. Other fruit variants, most notably the blood lemons, are more mysterious for various reasons.

Growth: Growth from seedling to full size takes around as long as the average Wildclaw or Imperial takes to grow from hatchling to dragon, though XS/Bonsai and Heims may grow faster. However, even young Lemon Trees will produce fruit.

Note: Lemons from younger trees are incredibly inconsistent. Some are tasteless while others produce a significantly stronger flavor than anything an adult tree has produced. However, all of the fruit look the same, so you'll have to guess and hope you don't get an overwhelmingly spicy or sour lemon. Better to just wait for the tree to grow and its fruit to stabilize. Age at which this occurs seems to vary.

Breeding: Research in Progress - Research is challenging, but there appear to be notable differences in breeding between the four types. One almost uniform occurrence is that parent trees, even incredibly mild-tempered ones, become rather protective of their saplings, though this varies between pairs and variants.

Originals are somewhat simple to breed once a pair is created, though once the saplings appear the parents become incredibly aggressive. They appear to prefer raising and protecting their offspring for several days or weeks, often becoming easier to separate as the saplings grow older. If not separated purposely, the saplings will eventually wander off on their own. It is recommended to separate them before the saplings leave their parents' territory, as the saplings may become difficult to locate afterwards.
XL are the most difficult to breed by far. Individuals can be incredibly territorial towards other trees, making creating a pair rather risky. Failed pairings often result in death of one tree as well as damage to the victor as it is impossible to break up the fight. Even if a pair is created, the breeders must be incredibly careful and vigilant; any offspring must be removed from the parents within days as the parents may later view them as trespassers and attack their own nest.
XS/Bonsai are among the easiest to breed. As they often live in small groups, it is unknown if they choose a specific mate as the other trees do. The group typically raises and defends all saplings together, making separating the saplings from the adults the toughest part of breeding XS/Bonsai. However, since they are very small, it is not an overly dangerous process as long as appropriate eyewear is worn to protect against lemon juice.
Heims are by far the easiest to breed. Similar to other trees, these individuals often take only one mate. Given their mellow nature, separating the saplings from the parents is rather simple after gaining the parents' trust. It is recommended to separate them over the course of several days rather than suddenly as the latter may result in breaking the trust and more aggressive behavior in the future. • Care: Research in Progress - Lemon Trees are incredibly low maintenance. Able to walk around unlike other plants, they are fully capable of watering themselves and seeking out areas with better soil.
    • Feeding: It is unknown if the Lemon Trees eat anything; not one has been observed consuming food, but odd bite marks have been noticed on plants and even animals in areas where a Lemon Tree is known to live. However, attempts to feed the trees always fail and attempts to collect a bite impressions lead to the incredibly upset trees flinging lemons at the researchers.
    • Watering: Lemon Trees are capable of finding enough water for themselves, but if you wish to keep them close by, it is best to provide a water source.
      • Note: The trees seem to greatly enjoy rain. Giving yours a quick sprinkling every now and then will likely help you gain the tree's affection.
    • Housing: They're trees. Sapient trees. Have you ever tried getting a tree to go inside a building or shelter? Besides, they really like rain, so unless you're getting a hurricane or something you shouldn't be forcing them to go inside.
      • XS/Bonsai and Heims variants may be exceptions.
    • Training: Somehow, the trees can be trained.
      • Reward-based training is highly suggested. Though the trees can clearly feel discomfort and pain, aversive training methods are not recommended for several reasons: the tree will likely hate you forever, fight back, leave, or all of the above.
    • Fertilizing: Some researchers have attempted to use fertilizer to enrich the soil for the trees. This does not always work as some of the trees avoid the fertilized area. Perhaps they don't like it?
      • Note: If the soil quality in an area isn't good enough, the trees might leave the area. This makes trees that don't like fertilizer more difficult to care for, but as long as you live in a fertile area with enough water, even those will stick around.
    • Fruit Alterations: Over time, the Lemon Trees seem to have adapted and branched off into several variations. Some, such as the pink lemon trees, are thought to have formed after farmers exposed some trees to different fertilizers for extended amounts of time. Other fruit variants, most notably the blood lemons, are more mysterious for various reasons.
  • Growth: Growth from seedling to full size takes around as long as the average Wildclaw or Imperial takes to grow from hatchling to dragon, though XS/Bonsai and Heims may grow faster. However, even young Lemon Trees will produce fruit.
    • Note: Lemons from younger trees are incredibly inconsistent.
  • Breeding: Research in Progress - Research is challenging, but there appear to be notable differences in breeding between the four types. One almost uniform occurrence is that parent trees, even incredibly mild-tempered ones, become rather protective of their saplings, though this varies between pairs and variants.
    • Originals are somewhat simple to breed once a pair is created, though once the saplings appear the parents become incredibly aggressive.
    • XL are the most difficult to breed by far.
    • XS/Bonsai are among the easiest to breed.
    • Heims are by far the easiest to breed.
